1Als aber Jesus zu Bethlehem in Judäa geboren war, in den Tagen des Königs Herodes[1], siehe, da kamen Weise[2] vom Morgenland[3] nach Jerusalem, die sprachen: (Lk 1,5; Lk 2,4)2Wo ist der König der Juden, der geboren worden ist? Flucht nach Ägypten – Kindermord zu Bethlehem
13Als sie aber hingezogen waren, siehe, da erscheint ein Engel des Herrn dem Josef im Traum und spricht: Steh auf, nimm das Kind und seine Mutter zu dir und fliehe nach Ägypten, und bleibe dort, bis ich es dir sage! Denn Herodes wird das Kind suchen, um es umzubringen. (1Kön 11,40; Jer 26,21; Mt 1,20; Lk 13,31; Offb 12,4)14Er aber stand auf, nahm das Kind und seine Mutter des Nachts zu sich und zog hin nach Ägypten.15Und er war dort bis zum Tod des Herodes; damit erfüllt wurde, was von dem Herrn geredet ist durch den Propheten, der spricht: »Aus Ägypten habe ich meinen Sohn gerufen.« (2Mo 4,22; Hos 11,1)16Da ergrimmte Herodes sehr, als er sah, dass er von den Weisen hintergangen worden war; und er sandte hin und ließ alle Jungen töten, die in Bethlehem und in seinem ganzen Gebiet waren, von zwei Jahren und darunter, nach der Zeit, die er von den Weisen genau erforscht hatte.17Da wurde erfüllt, was durch den Propheten Jeremia geredet ist, der spricht:18»Eine Stimme ist in Rama gehört worden, Weinen und viel Wehklagen: Rahel beweint ihre Kinder, und sie wollte sich nicht trösten lassen, weil sie nicht ⟨mehr⟩ sind.« (Jer 31,15)
Rückkehr aus Ägypten
19Als aber Herodes gestorben war, siehe, da erscheint ein Engel des Herrn dem Josef in Ägypten im Traum (Mt 2,13)20und spricht: Steh auf, nimm das Kind und seine Mutter zu dir und zieh in das Land Israel! Denn sie sind gestorben, die dem Kind nach dem Leben trachteten. 1Jésus était né à Bethléhem[1] en Judée, sous le règne du roi Hérode[2]. Or, des mages[3] venant de l’Orient arrivèrent à Jérusalem.2Ils demandaient: Où est le roi des Juifs qui vient de naître? Nous avons vu se lever son étoile, et nous sommes venus lui rendre hommage[4].3Quand le roi Hérode apprit la nouvelle, il en fut profondément troublé, et tout Jérusalem avec lui.4Il convoqua tous les chefs des prêtres et les spécialistes de la Loi que comptait son peuple et il leur demanda où devait naître le Messie.5– A Bethléhem en Judée, lui répondirent-ils, car voici ce que le prophète a écrit:6Et toi, Bethléhem, village de Juda, tu n’es certes pas le plus insignifiant des chefs-lieux de Juda, car c’est de toi que sortira le chef qui, comme un berger, conduira Israël mon peuple[5]. (Mi 5,1)7Là-dessus, Hérode fit appeler secrètement les mages et se fit préciser à quel moment l’étoile leur était apparue.8Puis il les envoya à Bethléhem en disant: Allez là-bas et renseignez-vous avec précision sur cet enfant; puis, quand vous l’aurez trouvé, venez me le faire savoir, pour que j’aille, moi aussi, lui rendre hommage.9Quand le roi leur eut donné ces instructions, les mages se mirent en route. La fuite en Egypte
13Après leur départ, un ange du Seigneur apparut à Joseph dans un rêve et lui dit: Lève-toi, emmène l’enfant et sa mère, et fuis en Egypte. Tu y resteras jusqu’à ce que je te dise de revenir, car Hérode fera rechercher l’enfant pour le tuer.14Joseph se leva donc, emmena l’enfant et sa mère, de nuit, pour se réfugier en Egypte.15Il y resta jusqu’à la mort d’Hérode. Ainsi s’accomplit ce que le Seigneur avait dit par le prophète: J’ai appelé mon fils à sortir de l’Egypte[7]. (Hos 11,1)16Quand Hérode s’aperçut que les mages s’étaient moqués de lui, il devint furieux: il donna l’ordre de tuer à Bethléhem et dans les environs tous les enfants de moins de deux ans, conformément aux précisions que lui avaient données les mages sur l’époque où l’étoile était apparue.17Ainsi s’accomplit la parole transmise par Jérémie, le prophète:18On entend à Rama une voix qui gémit et d’abondants sanglots amers: Rachel pleure ses enfants et elle ne veut pas se laisser consoler car ils ne sont plus[8]. Retour au pays
19Après la mort d’Hérode, un ange du Seigneur apparut en rêve à Joseph, en Egypte,20et lui dit: Lève-toi, emmène l’enfant et sa mère et retourne avec eux dans le pays d’Israël, car ceux qui voulaient tuer l’enfant sont morts.21Joseph se leva donc, emmena l’enfant et sa mère et retourna dans le pays d’Israël.22Mais il apprit qu’Archélaüs était devenu roi de Judée à la place de son père Hérode. Il eut donc peur de s’y installer, et, averti par Dieu dans un rêve, il se retira dans la province de Galilée,23où il s’établit dans une ville appelée Nazareth. Ainsi s’accomplit cette parole des prophètes: On l’appellera le Nazaréen[9]. (Apg 24,5)
