(Jak 1,25; 2Joh 1,1)33Sie antworteten ihm: Wir sind Abrahams Nachkommenschaft[5] und sind nie jemandes Sklaven gewesen. Wie sagst du: Ihr sollt frei werden? (5Mo 5,6; Neh 9,36; Jes 26,13; Mt 3,9; Joh 8,39)34Jesus antwortete ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Jeder, der die Sünde tut, ist der Sünde Sklave. Wahre Nachkommen Abrahams

Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.45And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.46Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?47He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.48Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?49Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.50And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.52Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?54Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:55Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.57Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.59Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

La donna adultera
1Gesù andò al monte degli Ulivi.2All’alba tornò nel tempio, e tutto il popolo andò da lui; ed egli, sedutosi, li istruiva.3Allora gli scribi e i farisei condussero una donna còlta in adulterio; e fattala stare in mezzo,4gli dissero: «Maestro, questa donna è stata còlta in flagrante adulterio.5Ora Mosè, nella legge, ci ha comandato di lapidare tali donne; tu che ne dici?»6Dicevano questo per metterlo alla prova, per poterlo accusare. Ma Gesù, chinatosi, si mise a scrivere con il dito in terra.7E siccome continuavano a interrogarlo, egli si alzò e disse loro: «Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli per primo la pietra contro di lei».8E, chinatosi di nuovo, scriveva in terra.9Essi, udito ciò, uscirono a uno a uno, cominciando dai più vecchi; e Gesù fu lasciato solo con la donna che stava là in mezzo.10Gesù, alzatosi, le disse: «Donna, dove sono? Nessuno ti ha condannata?»11Ella rispose: «Nessuno, Signore». E Gesù disse: «Neppure io ti condanno; va’ e da ora in poi non peccare più».]
Gesù, la luce del mondo
12Gesù parlò loro di nuovo, dicendo: «Io sono la luce del mondo; chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce della vita».13Allora i farisei gli dissero: «Tu testimoni di te stesso; la tua testimonianza non è vera».14Gesù rispose loro: «Anche se io testimonio di me stesso, la mia testimonianza è vera, perché so da dove sono venuto e dove vado; ma voi non sapete da dove io vengo né dove vado.15Voi giudicate secondo la carne; io non giudico nessuno.16E anche se giudico, il mio giudizio è veritiero, perché non sono solo, ma io e il Padre che mi ha mandato.17D’altronde nella vostra legge è scritto che la testimonianza di due uomini è vera.18Ora sono io a testimoniare di me stesso, e anche il Padre che mi ha mandato testimonia di me».19Essi perciò gli dissero: «Dov’è tuo Padre?» Gesù rispose: «Voi non conoscete né me né il Padre mio; se conosceste me, conoscereste anche il Padre mio».20Queste parole le pronunciò nella sala del tesoro[1], insegnando nel tempio; e nessuno lo arrestò, perché l’ora sua non era ancora venuta.21Egli dunque disse loro di nuovo: «Io me ne vado e voi mi cercherete, e morirete nel vostro peccato; dove vado io, voi non potete venire».22Perciò i Giudei dicevano: «Si ucciderà forse? Poiché dice: “Dove vado io, voi non potete venire”».23Egli diceva loro: «Voi siete di quaggiù, io sono di lassù; voi siete di questo mondo, io non sono di questo mondo.24Perciò vi ho detto che morirete nei vostri peccati; perché se non credete che io sono[2], morirete nei vostri peccati».25Allora gli domandarono: «Chi sei tu?» Gesù rispose loro: «Sono per l’appunto quello che vi dico.26Ho molte cose da dire e da giudicare sul conto vostro; ma colui che mi ha mandato è veritiero, e le cose che ho udite da lui le dico al mondo».27Essi non capirono che egli parlava loro del Padre.28Gesù dunque disse {loro}: «Quando avrete innalzato il Figlio dell’uomo, allora conoscerete che io sono, e che non faccio nulla da me, ma dico queste cose come il Padre mi ha insegnato.29E colui che mi ha mandato è con me; egli non mi ha lasciato solo, perché faccio sempre le cose che gli piacciono».30Mentre egli parlava così, molti credettero in lui.31Gesù allora disse a quei Giudei che avevano creduto in lui: «Se perseverate nella mia parola, siete veramente miei discepoli;32conoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi».33Essi gli risposero: «Noi siamo discendenti di Abraamo, e non siamo mai stati schiavi di nessuno; come puoi tu dire: “Voi diverrete liberi”?»34Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che chiunque commette il peccato è schiavo del peccato.35Ora lo schiavo non dimora per sempre nella casa: il figlio vi dimora per sempre.36Se dunque il Figlio vi farà liberi, sarete veramente liberi.37So che siete discendenti di Abraamo; ma cercate di uccidermi, perché la mia parola non penetra in voi.38Io dico quel che ho visto presso il Padre mio; e voi pure fate le cose che avete udite dal padre vostro».39Essi gli risposero: «Nostro padre è Abraamo». Gesù disse loro: «Se foste figli di Abraamo, fareste le opere di Abraamo;40ora invece cercate di uccidermi, perché vi ho detto la verità che ho udita da Dio; Abraamo non fece così.41Voi fate le opere del padre vostro». Essi {dunque} gli dissero: «Noi non siamo nati da fornicazione; abbiamo un solo Padre: Dio».42Gesù disse loro: «Se Dio fosse vostro Padre, mi amereste, perché io sono proceduto e vengo da Dio; infatti io non sono venuto da me, ma è lui che mi ha mandato.43Perché non comprendete il mio parlare? Perché non potete dare ascolto alla mia parola.44Voi siete figli del diavolo, che è vostro padre, e volete fare i desideri del padre vostro. Egli è stato omicida fin dal principio e non si è attenuto alla verità, perché non c’è verità in lui. Quando dice il falso parla di quel che è suo, perché è bugiardo e padre della menzogna.45A me, perché io dico la verità, voi non credete.46Chi di voi mi convince di peccato? Se dico la verità, perché non mi credete?47Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio. Per questo voi non le ascoltate; perché non siete da Dio».
Gesù e Abraamo
48I Giudei gli risposero: «Non diciamo noi con ragione che sei un Samaritano[3] e che hai un demonio?»49Gesù replicò: «Io non ho un demonio, ma onoro il Padre mio, e voi mi disonorate.50Io non cerco la mia gloria; v’è uno che la cerca e che giudica.51In verità, in verità vi dico che se uno osserva la mia parola, non vedrà mai la morte».52I Giudei {dunque} gli dissero: «Ora sappiamo che tu hai un demonio. Abraamo e i profeti sono morti, e tu dici: “Se uno osserva la mia parola, non gusterà mai la morte”.53Sei tu forse maggiore del padre nostro Abraamo il quale è morto? Anche i profeti sono morti; chi pretendi di essere?»54Gesù rispose: «Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria è nulla; chi mi glorifica è il Padre mio, del quale voi dite: “È nostro Dio!”55e non l’avete conosciuto; ma io lo conosco, e se dicessi di non conoscerlo sarei un bugiardo come voi; ma io lo conosco e osservo la sua parola.56Abraamo, vostro padre, ha gioito nell’attesa di vedere il mio giorno; e l’ha visto, e se n’è rallegrato».57I Giudei gli dissero: «Tu non hai ancora cinquant’anni e hai visto Abraamo?»58Gesù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico: prima che Abraamo fosse nato, io sono[4]».59Allora essi presero delle pietre per tirargliele; ma Gesù si nascose e uscì dal tempio.
