16 A když se postíte, netvařte se utrápeně jako pokrytci; ti zanedbávají svůj vzhled, aby lidem ukazovali, že se postí; amen, pravím vám, už mají svou odměnu. 17 Když ty se postíš, potři svou hlavu olejem a tvář svou umyj, 18 abys neukazoval lidem, že se postíš, ale svému Otci, který zůstává skryt; a tvůj Otec, který vidí, co je skryto, ti odplatí.

19 Neukládejte si poklady na zemi, kde je ničí mol a rez a kde je zloději vykopávají a kradou. 20 Ukládejte si poklady v nebi, kde je neničí mol ani rez a kde je zloději nevykopávají a nekradou. 21 Neboť kde je tvůj poklad, tam bude i tvé srdce. 22 Světlem těla je oko. Je-li tedy tvé oko čisté, celé tvé tělo bude mít světlo. 23 Je-li však tvé oko špatné, celé tvé tělo bude ve tmě. Jestliže i světlo v tobě je temné, jak velká bude potom tma? 24 Nikdo nemůže sloužit dvěma pánům. Neboť jednoho bude nenávidět a druhého milovat, k jednomu se přidá a druhým pohrdne. Nemůžete sloužit Bohu i majetku. 25 Proto vám pravím: Nemějte starost o svůj život, co budete jíst, ani o tělo, co budete mít na sebe. Což není život víc než pokrm a tělo víc než oděv? 26 Pohleďte na nebeské ptactvo: neseje, nežne, nesklízí do stodol, a přece je váš nebeský Otec živí. Což vy nejste o mnoho cennější? 27 Kdo z vás může o jedinou píď prodloužit svůj život, bude-li se znepokojovat? 28 A o oděv proč si děláte starosti? Podívejte se na polní lilie, jak rostou: nepracují, nepředou – 29 a pravím vám, že ani Šalomoun v celé své nádheře nebyl tak oděn jako jedna z nich. 30 Jestliže tedy Bůh tak obléká polní trávu, která tu dnes je a zítra bude hozena do pece, neobleče tím spíše vás, malověrní? 31 Nemějte tedy starost a neříkejte: Co budeme jíst? Co budeme pít? Co si budeme oblékat? 32 Po tom všem se shánějí pohané. Váš nebeský Otec přece ví, že to všechno potřebujete. 33 Hledejte především jeho království a spravedlnost, a všechno ostatní vám bude přidáno. 34 Nedělejte si tedy starost o zítřek; zítřek bude mít své starosti. Každý den má dost vlastního trápení.

Vom Almosen

1 Hütet euch, eure Gerechtigkeit vor den Menschen zu tun, um von ihnen gesehen zu werden; sonst habt ihr keinen Lohn von eurem Vater im Himmel zu erwarten. 2 Wenn du Almosen gibst, posaune es nicht vor dir her, wie es die Heuchler in den Synagogen und auf den Gassen tun, um von den Leuten gelobt zu werden! Amen, ich sage euch: Sie haben ihren Lohn bereits erhalten. 3 Wenn du Almosen gibst, soll deine linke Hand nicht wissen, was deine rechte tut, 4 damit dein Almosen im Verborgenen bleibt; und dein Vater, der auch das Verborgene sieht, wird es dir vergelten.

Vom Beten – Das Vaterunser

5 Wenn ihr betet, macht es nicht wie die Heuchler! Sie stellen sich beim Gebet gern in die Synagogen und an die Straßenecken, damit sie von den Leuten gesehen werden. Amen, ich sage euch: Sie haben ihren Lohn bereits erhalten. 6 Du aber, wenn du betest, geh in deine Kammer, schließ die Tür zu; dann bete zu deinem Vater, der im Verborgenen ist! Amen, ich sage euch: Sie haben ihren Lohn bereits erhalten. 17 Du aber, wenn du fastest, salbe dein Haupt und wasche dein Gesicht, 18 damit die Leute nicht merken, dass du fastest, sondern nur dein Vater, der im Verborgenen ist; und dein Vater, der das Verborgene sieht, wird es dir vergelten.

Von der rechten Sorge

19 Sammelt euch nicht Schätze hier auf der Erde, wo Motte und Wurm sie zerstören und wo Diebe einbrechen und sie stehlen, (L 12,33) 20 sondern sammelt euch Schätze im Himmel, wo weder Motte noch Wurm sie zerstören und keine Diebe einbrechen und sie stehlen! 21 Denn wo dein Schatz ist, da ist auch dein Herz. 22 Die Leuchte des Leibes ist das Auge.
