1 Šest dní před Velikonocemi přišel Ježíš do Betanie, kde bydlel Lazar, kterého vzkřísil z mrtvých.2 Připravili mu tam večeři; Marta při ní obsluhovala a Lazar byl jeden z těch, kteří byli s Ježíšem u stolu.3 Tu vzala Marie libru drahého oleje z pravého nardu, pomazala Ježíšovi nohy a otřela je svými vlasy. Dům se naplnil vůní té masti.4 Jidáš Iškariotský, jeden z jeho učedníků, který jej měl zradit, řekl:5 „Proč nebyl ten olej prodán za tři sta denárů a peníze dány chudým?“6 To řekl ne proto, že by mu záleželo na chudých, ale že byl zloděj: měl na starosti pokladnici a bral z toho, co se do ní dávalo.7 Ježíš řekl: „Nech ji, uchovala to ke dni mého pohřbu!8 Chudé máte vždycky s sebou, ale mne nemáte vždycky.“ 9 Velký zástup Židů se dověděl, že tam Ježíš je; a přišli nejen kvůli němu, ale také aby viděli Lazara, kterého vzkřísil z mrtvých.10 Proto se velekněží uradili, že zabijí i Lazara;11 neboť mnozí Židé kvůli němu odcházeli a věřili v Ježíše.
— Vjezd do Jeruzaléma
12 Druhého dne se dovědělo mnoho poutníků, kteří přišli na svátky, že Ježíš přichází do Jeruzaléma.13 Vzali palmové ratolesti, šli ho uvítat a volali: „Hosanna, požehnaný, jenž přichází ve jménu Hospodinově, král izraelský.“ 14 Ježíš nalezl oslátko a vsedl na ně, jak je psáno: 15 ‚Neboj se, dcero Siónská, hle, král tvůj přichází, sedě na oslátku.‘ 16 Jeho učedníci tomu v té chvíli neporozuměli, ale když byl Ježíš oslaven, tu se rozpomenuli, že to o něm bylo psáno a že se tak stalo. 17 Zástup, který s ním byl, když vyvolal Lazara z hrobu a vzkřísil ho z mrtvých, vydával o tom svědectví.18 Proto ho také přišlo uvítat množství lidu, neboť slyšeli, že učinil toto znamení.19 Farizeové si řekli: „Vidíte, že nic nezmůžete! Celý svět se dal za ním.“
— Odpověď řeckým poutníkům
20 Někteří z poutníků, kteří se přišli o svátcích klanět Bohu, byli Řekové.21 Ti přistoupili k Filipovi, který byl z Betsaidy v Galileji, a prosili ho: „Pane, rádi bychom viděli Ježíše.“22 Filip šel a řekl to Ondřejovi, Ondřej a Filip to šli říci Ježíšovi.23 Ježíš jim odpověděl: „Přišla hodina, aby byl oslaven Syn člověka.24 Amen, amen, pravím vám, jestliže pšeničné zrno nepadne do země a nezemře, zůstane samo. Zemře-li však, vydá mnohý užitek.25 Kdo miluje svůj život, ztratí jej; kdo nenávidí svůj život v tomto světě, uchrání jej pro život věčný.26 Kdo mně chce sloužit, ať mě následuje, a kde jsem já, tam bude i můj služebník. Kdo mně slouží, dojde cti od Otce.“

27 „Nyní je má duše sevřena úzkostí. Mám snad říci: Otče, zachraň mě od této hodiny? Vždyť pro tuto hodinu jsem přišel.28 Otče, oslav své jméno!“ Z nebe zazněl hlas: „Oslavil jsem a ještě oslavím.“29 Zástup, který tam stál a slyšel to, říkal, že zahřmělo. Jiní tvrdili: „Anděl k němu promluvil.“30 Ježíš nato řekl: „Tento hlas se neozval kvůli mně, ale kvůli vám.31 Nyní je soud nad tímto světem, nyní bude vládce tohoto světa vyvržen ven.32 A já, až budu vyvýšen ze země, přitáhnu všecky k sobě.“33 To řekl, aby naznačil, jakou smrtí má zemřít.34 Zástup mu odpověděl: „My jsme slyšeli ze Zákona, že Mesiáš má zůstat navěky; jak ty můžeš říkat, že Syn člověka musí být vyvýšen? Kdo je ten Syn člověka?“35 Ježíš jim řekl: „Ještě jen na malou chvíli je světlo mezi vámi. Dokud máte světlo, neustávejte v cestě, aby vás nepřekvapila tma; kdo chodí ve tmě, neví, kam jde.36 Dokud máte světlo, věřte ve světlo, abyste se stali syny světla.“ Tak promluvil Ježíš; potom odešel a skryl se před nimi. 37 Ač před nimi učinil taková znamení, nevěřili v něho;38 a tak se naplnilo slovo, které řekl prorok Izaiáš: ‚Hospodine, kdo uvěřil našemu kázání? A komu byla zjevena moc Hospodinova?‘39 Proto nemohli věřit, neboť Izaiáš také řekl: 40 ‚Oslepil jim oči a zatvrdil jim srdce, takže neuvidí očima a srdcem nepochopí, neobrátí se a já je neuzdravím.‘ 41 Tak řekl Izaiáš, neboť viděl jeho slávu a mluvil o něm. 42 Přesto v něho uvěřili i mnozí z předních mužů, ale kvůli farizeům se k němu nepřiznávali, aby nebyli vyloučeni ze synagógy.43 Zamilovali si lidskou slávu víc než slávu Boží. 44 Ježíš hlasitě zvolal: „Kdo věří ve mne, ne ve mne věří, ale v toho, který mě poslal.45 A kdo vidí mne, vidí toho, který mě poslal.46 Já jsem přišel na svět jako světlo, aby nikdo, kdo ve mne věří, nezůstal ve tmě.47 Kdo slyší má slova a nezachovává je, toho já nesoudím. Nepřišel jsem, abych soudil svět, ale abych svět spasil.48 Kdo mě odmítá a nepřijímá moje slova, má, kdo by jej soudil: Slovo, které jsem mluvil, to jej bude soudit v poslední den.49 Neboť jsem nemluvil sám ze sebe, ale Otec, který mě poslal, přikázal mi, jak mám mluvit a co říci.50 A vím, že jeho přikázání je věčný život. Co tedy mluvím, mluvím tak, jak mi pověděl Otec.“
1Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. (L 10,38; L 10,40)3Mary therefore took a pound[1] of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (L 7,37)4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said,5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[2] and given to the poor?” (J 13,29)6He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. (J 12,5)7Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it[3] for the day of my burial.8For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[4] was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. (J 11,44)10So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, (L 16,31)11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. (J 11,45; J 12,18)
The Triumphal Entry
12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. (Mt 21,4; Mk 11,7; L 19,35)13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” (Ž 118,25; J 1,49; J 5,43; Zj 7,9)14And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,15“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” (Za 9,9)16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. (Mk 9,32; J 2,22; J 7,39; J 12,23; J 13,7)17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. (L 19,37)18The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. (J 12,9)19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” (J 3,26; J 11,47)
Some Greeks Seek Jesus
20Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. (1Kr 8,41; Mk 7,26; J 7,35; Sk 8,27; Sk 17,4)21So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” (J 1,44)22Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. (Mk 13,3)23And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. (Mk 14,41; J 2,4; J 12,16; J 12,27; J 13,31; J 17,1)24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up
27“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” (Sk 23,9)30Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. The Unbelief of the People
36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. (L 10,6)37Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him,38so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” (Iz 53,1; Mt 1,22; Ř 10,16)39Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, (J 5,44)40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” (Iz 6,10; Mt 13,14; Mk 6,52)41Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. (Iz 6,1; J 5,46)42Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; (J 3,1; J 7,13; J 7,48; J 9,22)43for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. (J 5,44)
Jesus Came to Save the World
44And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. (Mt 10,40; J 5,24; J 13,20; J 14,1; 1P 1,21)45And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. (J 6,40; J 14,9)46I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. (J 1,4; J 1,9; J 8,12; J 12,35)47If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. (J 3,17; J 3,36; J 4,42; J 8,15)48The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
