1 Věrohodné je to slovo: Kdo chce být biskupem, touží po krásném úkolu.2 Nuže, biskup má být bezúhonný, jen jednou ženatý, střídmý, rozvážný, řádný, pohostinný, schopný učit,3 ne pijan, ne rváč, nýbrž vlídný, smířlivý, nezištný.4 Má dobře vést svou rodinu a mít děti poslušné a počestné;5 nedovede-li někdo vést svou rodinu, jak se bude starat o Boží církev?6 Nemá být nově pokřtěný, aby nezpyšněl a nepropadl odsouzení ďáblovu.7 Musí mít také dobrou pověst u těch, kdo jsou mimo církev, aby neupadl do pomluv a ďáblových nástrah. 8 Rovněž jáhnové mají být čestní, ne dvojací v řeči, ne oddaní vínu, ne ziskuchtiví.9 Mají uchovávat tajemství víry v čistém svědomí.10 Ať jsou nejdříve vyzkoušeni, a teprve potom, když jim nelze nic vytknout, ať konají svou službu.11 Právě tak ženy v této službě mají být čestné, ne pomlouvačné, střídmé, ve všem věrné.12 Jáhni ať jsou jen jednou ženatí, ať dobře vedou své děti a celou rodinu.13 Konají-li dobře svou službu, získávají si důstojné postavení a velkou jistotu ve víře v Krista Ježíše. 14 Doufám, že k tobě brzo přijdu. Ale píši ti to15 pro případ, že bych se opozdil, abys věděl, jak je třeba si počínat v Božím domě, jímž je církev živého Boha, sloup a opora pravdy.16 Vpravdě veliké je tajemství zbožnosti: Byl zjeven v těle, ospravedlněn Duchem, viděn od andělů, hlásán národům, došel víry ve světě, byl přijat do slávy.

Qualifications for Deacons
8Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[3] not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. (Fp 1,1; 1Tm 5,23; Tt 1,7; Tt 2,3; 1P 5,2)9They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. (Sk 23,1; 1Tm 1,19)10And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. (1Tm 5,22)11Their wives likewise[4] must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. (Tt 2,3; Tt 2,10)12Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. (1Tm 3,2; 1Tm 3,4)13For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. (Mt 25,21)
The Mystery of Godliness
14I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that,15if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.16Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He[5] was manifested in the flesh, vindicated[6] by the Spirit,[7] seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
