Quema del rollo

1 En el cuarto año de Joacim ben Josías, rey de Judá, Jeremías recibió esta palabra de YHVH, diciendo: 2 Toma el rollo y escribe en él todas las palabras que te he hablado contra Israel y contra Judá, y contra todas las naciones, desde el día que comencé a hablarte, desde los días de Josías hasta hoy. 3 Quizá la casa de Judá escuche todo el mal que me propongo causarles, y cada cual pueda arrepentirse de su mal camino, y Yo pueda perdonarles sus iniquidades y sus pecados. 4 Entonces Jeremías llamó a Baruc ben Nerías, y Baruc escribió en el rollo, de boca de Jeremías, todas las palabras que YHVH le había hablado. 5 Después Jeremías mandó a Baruc, diciendo: A mí se me ha prohibido entrar en la Casa de YHVH. 6 Entra pues tú, y en día de ayuno lee en el rollo que escribiste de mi boca las palabras de YHVH a oídos del pueblo, en la Casa de YHVH. También las leerás a oídos de todos los de Judá que vienen de sus ciudades. 7 Quizá su oración llegue ante la presencia de YHVH, y cada cual se vuelva de su mal camino, porque grande es la ira y la indignación que YHVH siente contra este pueblo. 8 Y Baruc ben Nerías hizo conforme a todo lo que le mandó el profeta Jeremías, leyendo en el rollo las palabras de YHVH en la Casa de YHVH. 9 Y en el año quinto de Joacim ben Josías, rey de Judá, en el mes noveno, aconteció que se proclamó un ayuno en la presencia de YHVH para todo el pueblo de Jerusalem y para todos los del pueblo que llegaban de las ciudades de Judá a Jerusalem. 10 Y Baruc leyó a oídos del pueblo las palabras del rollo de Jeremías en la Casa de YHVH, en el aposento de Gemarías ben Safán, el escriba, en el atrio superior, a la entrada de la puerta nueva de la Casa de YHVH. 11 Y cuando Micaías ben Gemarías, hijo de Safán, oyó todas las palabras de YHVH, leídas del rollo, 12 descendió a la casa del rey, al aposento del secretario, y he aquí todos los príncipes estaban allí sentados, esto es: Elisama secretario, Delaía ben Semaías, Elnatán ben Acbor, Gemarías ben Safán, Sedequías ben Ananías, y todos los príncipes. 13 Y Micaías les contó todas las palabras que había oído cuando Baruc leyó en el rollo a oídos del pueblo. 14 Entonces los príncipes enviaron a Jehudí ben Netanías, hijo de Selemías, hijo de Cusi, para que dijera a Baruc: Toma el rollo en el que leíste a oídos del pueblo, y ven. Y Baruc ben Nerías tomó el rollo en su mano y fue a ellos. 15 Y le dijeron: Siéntate ahora, y léelo en nuestros oídos. Y Baruc se lo leyó. 16 Y sucedió que cuando hubieron oído todas aquellas palabras, se miraron unos a otros azorados, y dijeron a Baruc: De seguro le referiremos al rey todas estas palabras. 17 Y le preguntaron a Baruc: Dinos ahora: ¿Cómo escribiste de su boca todas estas palabras? 18 Y Baruc les dijo: Él me dictaba de su boca todas estas palabras, y yo escribía con tinta en el rollo. 19 Entonces los príncipes dijeron a Baruc: Ve y escóndete, tú y Jeremías, y que nadie sepa dónde estáis. 20 Luego ellos entraron al atrio, a donde estaba el rey, y habiendo depositado el rollo en el aposento de Elisama el secretario, refirieron todo el asunto a oídos del rey. 21 Entonces el rey envió a Jehudí a traer el rollo, el cual lo tomó del aposento de Elisama el secretario, y Jehudí lo leyó a oídos del rey y de todos los príncipes que estaban junto al rey. 22 Y el rey estaba sentado en las habitaciones de invierno (era el mes noveno), y había un brasero ardiendo delante de él. 23 Y sucedió que cuando Jehudí hubo leído tres o cuatro columnas, el rey lo rasgó con una navaja de escriba, y lo echó al fuego que había en el brasero, hasta que todo el rollo se consumió en el fuego que había en el brasero. 24 Así no tuvieron temor, y ni el rey ni ninguno de sus siervos que habían oído aquellas palabras rasgaron sus vestidos. 25 Y aunque Elnatán y Delaía y Gemarías rogaron al rey que no quemara aquel rollo, no los quiso oír. 26 Y el rey envió a Jerameel ben Hamelec, a Seraías ben Azriel y a Selemías ben Abdeel, para que apresaran a Baruc el escriba y al profeta Jeremías, pero YHVH los escondió. 27 Después que el rey hubo quemado el rollo con las palabras que Baruc había escrito de boca de Jeremías, tuvo Jeremías revelación de YHVH, diciendo: 28 Toma otro rollo y escribe en él todas las palabras anteriores que estaban en el primer rollo que quemó Joacim rey de Judá. 29 En cuanto a Joacim rey de Judá, dirás: Así dice YHVH: Tú quemaste este rollo, diciendo: ¿Por qué escribiste en él, diciendo: De cierto vendrá el rey de Babilonia y destruirá esta tierra y hará desaparecer de ella hombres y bestias? 30 Por tanto, así dice YHVH acerca de Joacim rey de Judá: No tendrá quien se siente sobre el trono de David; y su cadáver será echado al calor del día y a la escarcha de la noche. 31 Y visitaré su iniquidad sobre él y sobre su linaje, y sobre sus siervos; y traeré sobre ellos y sobre los moradores de Jerusalem y sobre los varones de Judá, todo el mal que les he anunciado y que ellos rehusaron escuchar. 32 Entonces Jeremías tomó otro rollo y lo dio a Baruc ben Nerías el escriba, el cual escribió en él de boca de Jeremías todas las palabras del rollo que Joacim rey de Judá había quemado en el fuego, siendo además añadidas sobre ellas muchas otras palabras semejantes.

Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll

1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: (Jer 25:1; Jer 36:9; Jer 45:1) 2 “Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.” (Jer 18:8; Jer 26:3; Jer 31:34; Ez 12:3; Am 5:15; Sof 2:3)

4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that he had spoken to him. (Jer 32:12; Jer 36:2) 5 And Jeremiah ordered Baruch, saying, “I am banned from going to the house of the Lord, (Jer 32:2; Jer 33:1; Jer 36:4; Jer 39:15)

6 so you are to go, and on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord’s house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities. (Jer 36:9) 7 It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the Lord, and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.” (Jer 36:3) 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet ordered him about reading from the scroll the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house. 9 In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the Lord. (2 Cr 20:3; Jer 36:1; Jer 36:22) 10 Then, in the hearing of all the people, Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the scroll, in the house of the Lord, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord’s house. 12 he went down to the king’s house, into the secretary’s chamber, and all the officials were sitting there: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the officials. 13 And Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the scroll in the hearing of the people. 14 Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. 15 And they said to him, “Sit down and read it.” So Baruch read it to them. 16 When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. And they said to Baruch, “We must report all these words to the king.” (Jer 36:20) 17 Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?” 18 Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me, while I wrote them with ink on the scroll.” (Jer 36:32; Ro 16:22) 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.” 20 So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king. (Jer 36:12) 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22 It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. (Jer 36:9; Am 3:15; Jn 10:22) 23 As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24 Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments. (Jos 7:6; Jer 36:16) 25 Even when Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. (Is 59:16; Jer 36:12) 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them. 27 Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28 “Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” (Jer 26:9) 30 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have none to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. (Jer 22:2; Jer 22:4; Jer 22:19; Jer 22:30)

31 And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’” (Jer 1:16) 32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them. (Jer 36:4; Jer 36:18)
