1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’2He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them.3And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.4Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.5And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
Causing to stumble
6‘If anyone causes one of these little ones – those who believe in me – to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung round their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.7Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!8If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.9And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
The parable of the wandering sheep
10-11‘See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.[1] (Luk 19:10)12‘What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?13And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off.14In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.
Dealing with sin in the church
15‘If your brother or sister[2] sins,[3] go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.16But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that “every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.” (5 Mos 19:15)17If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.18‘Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be[4] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[5] loosed in heaven.19‘Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.20For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.’
The parable of the unmerciful servant
21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’22Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[6]23‘Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[7] was brought to him.25Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.26‘At this the servant fell on his knees before him. “Be patient with me,” he begged, “and I will pay back everything.”27The servant’s master took pity on him, cancelled the debt and let him go.28‘But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[8] He grabbed him and began to choke him. “Pay back what you owe me!” he demanded.29‘His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, “Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.”30‘But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.31When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.32‘Then the master called the servant in. “You wicked servant,” he said, “I cancelled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.33Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?”34In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.35‘This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.’
1At that time the disciples came to Jesus. They asked him, ‘Then who is the most important person in the kingdom of heaven?’2Jesus called a little child over to him. He had the child stand among them.3Jesus said, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. You need to change and become like little children. If you don’t, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.4Anyone who takes the humble position of this child is the most important in the kingdom of heaven.5Anyone who welcomes a little child like this one in my name welcomes me.
Do not cause people to sin
6‘What if someone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin? If they do, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and be drowned at the bottom of the sea.7How terrible it will be for the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Things like that must come. But how terrible for the person who causes them!8If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It would be better to enter the kingdom of heaven with only one hand than go into hell with two hands. It would be better to enter the kingdom of heaven with only one foot than go into hell with two feet. In hell the fire burns for ever.9If your eye causes you to sin, poke it out and throw it away. It would be better to enter the kingdom of heaven with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
The story of the wandering sheep
10-11‘See that you don’t look down on one of these little ones. Here is what I tell you. Their angels in heaven are always with my Father who is in heaven.12‘What do you think? Suppose a man owns 100 sheep and one of them wanders away. Won’t he leave the 99 sheep on the hills? Won’t he go and look for the one that wandered off?13What I’m about to tell you is true. If he finds that sheep, he is happier about the one than about the 99 that didn’t wander off.14It is the same with your Father in heaven. He does not want any of these little ones to die.
When someone sins against you
15‘If your brother or sister sins against you, go to them. Tell them what they did wrong. Keep it between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them back.16But what if they won’t listen to you? Then take one or two others with you. Scripture says, “Every matter must be proved by the words of two or three witnesses.” (5 Mos 19:15)17But what if they also refuse to listen to the witnesses? Then tell it to the church. And what if they refuse to listen even to the church? Then don’t treat them as a brother or sister. Treat them as you would treat an ungodly person or a tax collector.18‘What I’m about to tell you is true. What you lock on earth will be locked in heaven. What you unlock on earth will be unlocked in heaven.19‘Again, here is what I tell you. Suppose two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for. My Father in heaven will do it for you.20Where two or three people gather in my name, I am there with them.’
The servant who had no mercy
21Peter came to Jesus. He asked, ‘Lord, how many times should I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’22Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but 77 times.23‘The kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to collect all the money his servants owed him.24As the king began to do it, a man who owed him 10,000 bags of gold was brought to him.25The man was not able to pay. So his master gave an order. The man, his wife, his children, and all he owned had to be sold to pay back what he owed.26‘Then the servant fell on his knees in front of him. “Give me time,” he begged. “I’ll pay everything back.”27His master felt sorry for him. He forgave him what he owed and let him go.28‘But then that servant went out and found one of the other servants who owed him 100 silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. “Pay back what you owe me!” he said.29‘The other servant fell on his knees. “Give me time,” he begged him. “I’ll pay it back.”30‘But the first servant refused. Instead, he went and had the man thrown into prison. The man would be held there until he could pay back what he owed.31The other servants saw what had happened and were very angry. They went and told their master everything that had happened.32‘Then the master called the first servant in. “You evil servant,” he said. “I forgave all that you owed me because you begged me to.33Shouldn’t you have had mercy on the other servant just as I had mercy on you?”34In anger his master handed him over to the jailers. He would be punished until he paid back everything he owed.35‘This is how my Father in heaven will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.’
Matteus 18
King James Version
1At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?2And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,3And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.4Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.6But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.7Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!8Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.9And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.10Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.11For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.12How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?13And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.14Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.15Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.16But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.17And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.18Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.19Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.21Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?22Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.23Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.24And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.25But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.26The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.27Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.28But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.29And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.30And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.31So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.32Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:33Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?34And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.35So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
1At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (Matt 17:24; Matt 20:20; Mark 9:33; Luk 9:46)2And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them3and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Ps 131:2; Matt 5:19; Matt 19:14; Mark 10:15; Luk 18:17; Luk 22:32; 1 Kor 14:20; 1 Pet 2:2)4Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 18:3; Matt 20:27; Matt 23:11)5“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, (Matt 10:40; Matt 10:42)6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,[1] it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. (Mark 9:42; Luk 17:2; 1 Kor 8:12)
Temptations to Sin
7“Woe to the world for temptations to sin![2] For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! (Matt 13:41; Matt 26:24; Luk 17:1; 1 Kor 11:19)8And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. (Matt 5:29; Matt 25:41; Mark 9:43)9And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell[3] of fire. (Matt 18:8)
The Parable of the Lost Sheep
10“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.[4] (Est 1:14; Ps 34:7; Ps 91:11; Matt 6:29; Matt 25:40; Matt 25:45; Luk 1:19; Luk 15:7; Luk 15:10; Apg 12:15; Heb 1:14; Upp 8:2)12What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? (Matt 17:25; Matt 21:28; Luk 15:4)13And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.14So it is not the will of my[5] Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. (Joh 6:39; Joh 10:28; Joh 17:12)
21Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” (Matt 18:15; Luk 17:3; Kol 3:13)22Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.23“Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.[7] (Matt 25:19)24When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.[8] (Est 3:9; Matt 25:15)25And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. (2 Mos 21:2; 3 Mos 25:39; 2 Kung 4:1; Neh 5:5; Luk 7:42)26So the servant[9] fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ (Matt 8:2; Apg 10:25)27And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. (Matt 18:25)28But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii,[10] and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ (Matt 20:2; Matt 22:19; Mark 6:37; Mark 14:5; Luk 7:41; Luk 10:35; Joh 6:7)29So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’30He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt.31When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.32Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.33And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ (Matt 6:12; Ef 4:32; Kol 3:13; 1 Joh 4:11)34And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers,[11] until he should pay all his debt. (Matt 5:25; Matt 18:30; Jak 2:13)35So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” (Ords 21:13; Matt 6:15; Rom 6:17; 1 Pet 1:22)
