1När Jesus hade avslutat detta tal lämnade han Galileen och började vandra söderut mot Judeen, genom landet på östra sidan om Jordan.2Stora folkmassor följde honom dit, och han botade dem som var sjuka.3Några fariseer[1] kom då för att diskutera med Jesus och försöka få honom att säga något som de kunde sätta fast honom för. De frågade: ”Anser du att en man har rätt att skilja sig från sin fru av vilken orsak som helst?”4”Läser ni inte Skriften[2]?” svarade Jesus. ”I den står det att Gud från början skapade människan till man och kvinna, och5att en man därför ska lämna sina föräldrar och hålla sig till sin fru, så att de två blir ett.[3]6De är alltså inte längre två utan ett. Och vad Gud har förenat, får människan inte skilja åt.”7Då frågade de: ”Varför bestämde då Mose att en man kan skiljas genom att skriva ett intyg som bevis på skilsmässan, och att han sedan kan skicka iväg kvinnan?”[4]8Jesus svarade: ”Mose kände era hårda och onda hjärtan, det var därför han tillät er att skiljas, men det var inte så Gud hade tänkt från början.9Jag säger er att den man som skiljer sig från sin fru, utan att hon varit otrogen, och sedan gifter sig med en annan, han är otrogen.[5]”10Då sa hans efterföljare till honom: ”Om det är på det sättet, är det bättre att inte gifta sig alls.”11Men Jesus svarade: ”Alla kan inte ta till sig min undervisning om äktenskapet, utan bara de som får hjälp av Gud.12Men vad gäller att inte gifta sig, så föds en del utan möjlighet till sexuell aktivitet, andra har kastrerats av människor, men det finns också de som frivilligt lever i avhållsamhet och avstår från att gifta sig för att kunna tjäna Gud bättre.[6] Den som kan ta till sig min undervisning ska göra det.”
Jesus ber för barnen
13Sedan kom man till Jesus med små barn för att han skulle lägga händerna på dem och be. Men hans efterföljare körde bort dem.14Då sa Jesus: ”Skicka inte iväg dem. Låt barnen komma till mig, för alla som vill tillhöra Guds eget folk måste bli som de.[7]”15Så la han händerna på barnen och bad för dem. Sedan gick han därifrån.
Jesus talar med en rik ung man
16En ung man kom nu och frågade Jesus: ”Mästare, vad ska jag göra för gott för att få evigt liv?”17”Varför frågar du mig om vad som är gott?” svarade Jesus. ”Det finns bara en som är verkligt god, och det är Gud. Men evigt liv kan du få om du håller hans bud.”18”Vilka av buden?” frågade mannen. Jesus svarade: ” ’Du ska inte mörda, Du ska inte vara otrogen i ditt äktenskap, Du ska inte stjäla, Du ska inte ljuga eller vittna falskt,19Visa respekt för dina föräldrar, och Du ska älska din medmänniska som dig själv!’ ”[8]20”Jag håller redan alla dessa bud”, svarade den unga mannen. ”Vad mer behöver jag göra?”21Jesus sa till honom: ”Om du verkligen vill bli fullkomlig, så gå och sälj allt du äger och ge pengarna till de fattiga. Då ska du få en skatt i himlen. Kom sedan och följ mig.”22Men när den unga mannen hörde detta gick han bedrövad därifrån, för han var mycket rik.23Då sa Jesus till sina efterföljare: ”En sak är säker: det är nästan omöjligt för en rik människa att få tillhöra Guds eget folk.[9]24Ja, jag säger er att det är lättare för en kamel att komma igenom ett nålsöga än för en rik att underordna sig Gud så att han får tillhöra Guds eget folk.”25Detta påstående gjorde hans efterföljare alldeles förskräckta, och de sa: ”Vem i all världen kan då bli räddad?”26Jesus såg på dem och sa: ”Ingen, mänskligt sett. Men för Gud är allting möjligt.”27Då sa Petrus till honom: ”Vi har ju lämnat allt för att följa dig. Kommer vi att få något för det?”28”Ja”, svarade Jesus. ”Jag försäkrar er, att när jag, Människosonen[10], sätter mig på min kungatron för att regera i Guds nya värld, då ska också ni som har följt mig få sitta på tolv troner och styra över Israels tolv stammar.29Var och en som lämnar hus eller syskon eller föräldrar eller barn eller åkrar för att följa mig ska få mångdubbelt igen och få evigt liv som arv.30Många som idag har låg status ska vara bland de främsta i Guds nya värld, medan andra, som idag är betydelsefulla, måste hålla sig i bakgrunden.”

Den som kan ta till sig detta, ska göra det.”
Jesus ber för barnen

Jesus svarade: ” ’Du ska inte mörda, Du ska inte vara otrogen i ditt äktenskap, Du ska inte stjäla, Du ska inte vittna falskt,19Visa respekt för din far och mor, och Du ska älska din medmänniska som dig själv.’ ”[6]20”Jag har hållit alla dessa”, svarade den unga mannen. ”Vad mer behöver jag göra?”21Jesus sa till honom: ”Om du vill bli fullkomlig, så gå och sälj allt du äger och ge pengarna till de fattiga. Då ska du få en skatt i himlen. Kom sedan och följ mig.”22Men när den unga mannen hörde detta gick han bedrövad därifrån, för han ägde mycket.23Då sa Jesus till sina lärjungar: ”Sannerligen säger jag er: det är svårt för en rik människa att komma in i himmelriket!24Ja, jag säger er att det är lättare för en kamel att komma igenom ett nålsöga än för en rik att komma in i Guds rike.”25Detta påstående gjorde hans lärjungar förskräckta, och de sa: ”Vem kan då bli räddad?”26Jesus såg på dem och sa: ”För människorna är det inte möjligt, men för Gud är allting möjligt.”27Då sa Petrus till honom: ”Vi har ju lämnat allt för att följa dig. They asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?’4‘Haven’t you read,’ he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator “made them male and female,” (1 Mos 1:27)5and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh”? (1 Mos 2:24)6So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no-one separate.’7‘Why then,’ they asked, ‘did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?’8Jesus replied, ‘Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.9I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.’10The disciples said to him, ‘If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.’11Jesus replied, ‘Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.12For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others – and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.’
The little children and Jesus
13Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.14Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’15When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
The rich and the kingdom of God
16Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, ‘Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?’17‘Why do you ask me about what is good?’ Jesus replied. ‘There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.’18‘Which ones?’ he enquired. Jesus replied, ‘ “You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,19honour your father and mother,”[1] and “love your neighbour as yourself.” ’ (2 Mos 20:12; 3 Mos 19:18; 5 Mos 5:16)20‘All these I have kept,’ the young man said. ‘What do I still lack?’21Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.23Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, ‘Who then can be saved?’26Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’27Peter answered him, ‘We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?’28Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[2] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.30But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

A man may divorce his wife only if she has not been faithful to him.’10Here is what the disciples said to him. ‘If that’s the way it is between a husband and wife, it is better not to get married.’11Jesus replied, ‘Not everyone can accept the idea of staying single. Only those who have been helped to live without getting married can accept it.12Some men are not able to have children because they were born that way. Some have been made that way by other people. Others have chosen to live that way in order to serve the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.’
Little children are brought to Jesus
13Some people brought little children to Jesus. They wanted him to place his hands on the children and pray for them. But the disciples told them not to do it.14Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me. Don’t keep them away. The kingdom of heaven belongs to people like them.’15Jesus placed his hands on them to bless them. Then he went on from there.
Rich people and the kingdom of God
16Just then, a man came up to Jesus. He asked, ‘Teacher, what good thing must I do to receive eternal life?’17‘Why do you ask me about what is good?’ Jesus replied. ‘There is only one who is good. If you want to enter the kingdom, obey the commandments.’18‘Which ones?’ the man asked. Jesus said, ‘ “Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not be a false witness.19Honour your father and mother.” And “love your neighbour as you love yourself.” ’ (2 Mos 20:12; 3 Mos 19:18; 5 Mos 5:16)20‘I have obeyed all those commandments,’ the young man said. ‘What else do I need to do?’21Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go and sell everything you have. They asked, ‘Then who can be saved?’26Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With people, this is impossible. What reward will be given to us?’28‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ Jesus said to them. ‘When all things are made new, the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne. Then you who have followed me will also sit on 12 thrones. You will judge the 12 tribes of Israel.29Suppose anyone has left houses, brothers or sisters, father or mother, husband or wife, children or fields because of me. Anyone who has done that will receive 100 times as much. They will also receive eternal life.30But many who are first will be last. And many who are last will be first.

Let the Children Come to Me
13Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, (Mark 10:13; Mark 10:48; Luk 18:15)14but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt 18:3; Mark 9:39)15And he laid his hands on them and went away.
The Rich Young Man
16And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” (Matt 18:8; Matt 19:29; Matt 25:46; Mark 10:17; Luk 10:25; Luk 18:18)17And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good.
