1Když mluvíval Efraim, býval strach; vznešený byl v Izraeli, ale prohřešiv při Bálovi, tožť umřel.2A i nyní ještě předce hřeší. Nebo dělají sobě a slévají z stříbra svého podlé rozumu svého strašidla, ješto všecko to není než dílo řemeslníků, o čemž říkají: Lidé, kteříž obětují, telata ať líbají.3Protož budou jako oblak ranní a jako rosa jitřní, kteráž odchází, jako plevy vichřicí zachvácené z humna, a jako dým z komínu,4Ješto já jsem Hospodin Bůh tvůj od vyjití z země Egyptské, a Boha kromě mne nepoznal jsi, aniž jest jiný vysvoboditel kromě mne.5Jáť jsem tě poznal na poušti v zemi velmi vyprahlé.6Dobré pastvy měvše, nasyceni jsou, ale když se nasytili, pozdvihlo se srdce jejich, protož zapomenuli na mne.7Pročež budu jim jako lítý lev, jako pardus vedlé cesty číhati budu.8Potkám se s nimi jako nedvěd osiřelý, a roztrhám všecko srdce jejich, a sežeru je tam jako lev, jako zvěř divoká roztrhující je.9Z tebeť jest zhouba tvá, ó Izraeli, ješto ve mně všecka pomoc tvá.10Kdež jest král tvůj? Kdež jest? Nechť tě zachová ve všech městech tvých. Aneb soudcové tvoji, o nichž jsi řekl: Dej mi krále a knížata?11Dal jsem tobě krále v hněvě svém, a odjal jsem v prchlivosti své.12Svázánať jest nepravost Efraimova, schován jest hřích jeho.13Bolesti rodičky přijdou na něj; jest syn nemoudrý, sic jinak nezůstával by tak dlouho v životě matky.14Z ruky hrobu vyplatím je, od smrti vykoupím je; budu zhoubcím tvým, ó smrti, budu zkažením tvým, ó hrobe, želení skryto bude od očí mých.15Nebo on mezi bratřími ovoce ponese, ač prv přijde vítr východní, vítr Hospodinův od pouště vstupující, a vysuší studnice jeho, osuší i vrchoviště jeho; onenno rozchvátá poklad všech nejdražších klénotů.16Zpuštěna bude Samaří, proto že se protivila Bohu svému; od meče padnou, dítky jejich zrozrážíny budou, a těhotné ženy jejich zroztínány.
— Dobrý pastýř a spravedlivý - soudce - Bůh se stává nepřítelem lidu, který pohrdl jeho dobrotou a péčí.
1 Kdykoli Efrajim promluvil, nastalo zděšení, byl vznešený v Izraeli, ale provinil se Baalem a propadl smrti. 2 A přesto hřeší dál, odlévají si modly, modlářské stvůry ze stříbra podle svých nápadů. Všechno je to jen výrobek řemeslníků. O těch modlách říkají: „Ti, kdo obětují, ať líbají býčky.“ 3 Proto budou jak jitřní obláček, jako rosa, která hned po ránu mizí, jako plevy, jež vichr odvane z humna, jako kouř z dymníku. 4 Ale já jsem Hospodin, tvůj Bůh, už z egyptské země. Nepoznal jsi Boha kromě mne; mimo mne jiného zachránce není. 5 Já jsem tě poznal na poušti, ve vyprahlé zemi. 6 Měli pastvy do sytosti. Nasytili se a jejich srdce zpyšnělo, zapomněli na mě. 7 Budu na ně jako mladý lev, budu číhat u cesty jak levhart, 8 střetnu se s nimi jako medvědice zbavená mláďat. Hruď až k srdci jim roztrhám, sežeru je tam jako lvice; polní zvěř je rozsápe. 9 Je to tvá zkáza, Izraeli, že jsi proti mně, proti své pomoci. 10 Kdepak je tvůj král? Ať tě zachrání ve všech tvých městech. Kde jsou tvoji soudcové, o něž jsi žádal: “Dej mi krále a velmože?“ 11 Dávám ti krále rozhněván a beru ti jej v prchlivosti. 12 Efrajimovy nepravosti jsou svázány, jeho hříchy uschovány. 13 Dolehnou na něho bolesti rodičky. Je to syn nemoudrý; nechtěl opustit včas lůno rodičky. 14 Mám je vyplatit ze spárů podsvětí, vykoupit ze smrti? Kde je, smrti, tvá morová rána? Podsvětí, kde je tvůj smrtící žár? Lítost však bude mým očím skryta. 15 I když Efrajim mezi bratry ponese ovoce, přižene se východní vítr, vítr Hospodinův; už se zdvihá z pouště. Jeho zdroj zklame, jeho pramen vyschne, vypleněn bude poklad veškerých vzácností.
1Efraimova slova bázeň budila, v Izraeli býval vznešený, provinil se ale ctěním Baala, a tak se zahubil.2A nyní hřeší dál a dál; odlévají si sochy ze stříbra, modly, které si sami vymysleli – všechny je řemeslník vyrobil! Říkají, že se jim prý obětovat má… Lidé líbají telata!3A proto budou jako ranní mlha, jak rosa, jež zrána vyprchá, jak z mlatu vichrem unášená pleva, jako dým z komína.4Já jsem Hospodin, tvůj Bůh, už od vyjití z Egypta; Boha kromě mne nikdy nepoznáš, není jiný Spasitel než já!5Na poušti jsem tě opatroval,[1] v zemi, jež byla suchopár.6Nakrmili se dosyta, nasytili se a jejich srdce zpyšněla; zapomněli na mě dočista.7Proto jim budu lvem, jako leopard budu číhat na cestě;8napadnu je jak zuřivá medvědice, vyrvu jim z hrudi srdce, sežeru je tam jako lvice, roztrhám je jak divá zvěř!9Izraeli, zničil ses! Kdo ti pomůže?10Kde je tvůj král, tvůj zachránce? Kde je ve všech tvých městech? Kde jsou tví vládci, o nichž jsi pověděl: „Dej mi krále a velmože!“[2]11Rozhněván jsem ti krále dal a rozzuřen ho odnímám!12Efraimův trest je zpečetěn, jeho hřích dobře uložen.13Porodní křeče sevřou jej, on je však dítě nemoudré – jakmile přijde jeho čas, opustit lůno se nechystá.14Vyplatím je z moci záhrobí, vykoupím je ze smrti. Kde jsou teď, smrti, ty tvé hrozby? Kde je tvá zhouba, záhrobí?[3] Soucit bude mým očím skryt,15i když je Efraim nejplodnější mezi bratřími.[4] Východní vítr přichází, vítr Hospodinův se zvedá nad pouští, aby vysušil jeho potoky, jeho prameny aby vyprahly; vyplení jeho poklady, o vše cenné ho připraví.
