1 I řekl Hospodin k Jozue: Neboj se, ani se strachuj; pojmi s sebou všecken lid bojovný, a vstana, táhni k Hai. Aj, dal jsem v ruku tvou krále Hai a lid jeho, město i zemi jeho. 2 A učiníš Hai a králi jeho, jako jsi učinil Jerichu a králi jeho, loupež však a dobytky jeho rozbitujete mezi sebe. Zdělejž sobě zálohy k městu po zadu. 3 Tedy vstal Jozue a všecken lid bojovný, aby táhli k Hai. I vybral Jozue třidcet tisíců mužů velmi silných, a předeslal je v noci. 4 A přikázal jim, řka: Šetřtež vy, kteříž uděláte zálohy městu po zadní straně města, abyste nebyli příliš daleko od něho, ale buďte všickni pohotově. 5 Já pak i všecken lid, kterýž se mnou jest, přitáhneme k městu. A když oni nám vyjdou vstříc, jako prvé, utíkati budeme před nimi. 6 Tedy honiti budou nás, až bychom poodvedli jich od města, (nebo řeknou: Utíkají před námi, jako prvé), utíkajíce před nimi. 7 Vy mezi tím vyskočíte z záloh, a vyženete ostatní obyvatele města, nebo dá je Hospodin Bůh váš v ruku vaši. 8 A když vezmete město, zapálíte je ohněm, podlé slova Hospodinova učiníte; šetřtež toho, což jsem přikázal vám. 9 I poslal Jozue, a oni šli k zálohám, a zůstali mezi Bethel a Hai, od západní strany Hai; Jozue pak zůstal té noci u prostřed lidu. 10 Potom vstav Jozue velmi ráno, sečtl lid, i bral se napřed, on a starší Izraelští před lidem k Hai. 11 Všecken také lid bojovný, kterýž byl s ním, táhnouce, přiblížili se, až přišli naproti městu, a položili se po straně půlnoční Hai; údolí pak bylo mezi nimi a mezi Hai. 12 Vzal pak byl okolo pěti tisíc mužů, kteréž postavil v zálohách mezi Bethel a Hai, od západní stany města. 13 I přiblížil se lid, totiž všecko vojsko, kteréž bylo od půlnoční strany města, a kteříž byli v zálohách jeho od západní strany města; a tak vtáhl Jozue noci té do prostřed údolí. 14 I stalo se, že když je uzřel král Hai, pospíšili, a ráno vstavše, vyšli lidé města vstříc Izraelovi k boji, on i všecken lid jeho toho času před rovinu; nevěděl pak, že zálohy udělány byly jemu po zadu města. 15 I postoupil Jozue a všecken Izrael před nimi, a utíkali cestou pouště. 16 I svolán jest všecken lid v městě, aby je honili. I honili Jozue, a vzdálili se od města svého, 17 Tak že nezůstal žádný z obyvatelů Hai a Bethel, kdo by nevyšel, aby honil Izraele; a nechali města otevřeného, a honili Izraele. 18 Řekl pak Hospodin k Jozue: Zdvihni korouhev, kterouž máš v rukou svých, proti Hai, nebo v ruce tvé dám je. I zdvihl Jozue korouhev, kterouž měl v ruce své, proti městu. 19 Tedy, kteříž byli v zálohách, rychle vyskočili z místa svého, a běželi, když pozdvihl ruky své, a všedše do města, vzali je, a spěšně zapálili město ohněm. 20 Muži pak města Hai ohlédše se nazpět, uzřeli, a aj, vstupoval dým města k nebi, a neměli místa k utíkání sem ani tam; nebo lid, kterýž utíkati počal k poušti, obrátil se na ty, kteříž je honili. 21 Jozue zajisté a všecken Izrael, když viděli, že z záloh vzali město, a že se vznáší dým města, obrátili se, a bili muže Hai. 22 Onino také vyšli z města proti nim, a obklíčil Izrael nepřátely své, jedni odsud, druzí od onud; a zmordovali je, tak že žádný živ nezůstal ani neušel. 23 Ale krále Hai jali živého, a přivedli ho k Jozue. 24 Když pak pomordoval Izrael všecky obyvatele Hai v poli, totiž na poušti, kamž je honili, a padli ti všickni od ostrosti meče, až i zahlazeni jsou: navrátil se všecken Izrael do Hai, a zmordovali ostatky jeho mečem. 25 A bylo všech, kteříž padli v ten den, od muže až do ženy, dvanácte tisíců; všickni ti byli z Hai. 26 Ale Jozue nespustil ruky své, kterouž vyzdvihl korouhev, dokudž nebyli zmordováni všickni obyvatelé Hai. 27 Toliko hovada a loupež města toho rozbitovali mezi sebou synové Izraelští podlé slova Hospodinova, kteréž on přikázal Jozue. 28 Tedy vypálil Jozue Hai, a položil je v hromadu věčnou a pustinu, až do tohoto dne. 29 Krále pak Hai oběsil na dřevě, a nechal ho tam až do večera. A když zapadlo slunce, rozkázal Jozue, aby složili tělo jeho s dřeva, a povrhli je u brány města, a nametali na ně hromadu kamení velikou, kteráž trvá až do dnešního dne. 30 Tedy vzdělal Jozue oltář Hospodinu Bohu Izraelskému na hoře Hébal, 31 (Jakož přikázal Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, synům Izraelským, jakož psáno jest v knize zákona Mojžíšova,) oltář z kamení celého, nad nímž nebylo zdviženo železo, a obětovali na něm oběti zápalné Hospodinu, obětovali i oběti pokojné. 32 Napsal také tam na kameních výpis zákona Mojžíšova, kterýž psal před syny Izraelskými. 33 Všecken pak Izrael a starší jeho, i správcové i soudcové jeho stáli po obou stranách truhly před kněžími Levítskými, kteříž nosili truhlu smlouvy Hospodinovy, tak cizí jako doma zrozený, polovice jich proti hoře Garizim, a polovice proti hoře Hébal, jakož byl prvé přikázal Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, aby dobrořečil lidu Izraelskému nejprvé. 34 A potom četl všecka slova zákona, požehnání i zlořečení, tak jakž psáno jest v knize zákona. 35 Nebylo ani slova ze všeho, což přikázal Mojžíš, jehož by nečetl Jozue přede vším shromážděním Izraelským, i ženami i dětmi i příchozími, kteříž šli u prostřed nich.

— Dobytí města Aje - Izrael se dostává do válečného konfliktu s domorodci a vítězí. Jozue staví Hospodinu oltář a předkládá lidu Hospodinův zákon.

1 Potom řekl Hospodin Jozuovi: „Neboj se a neděs. Vezmi s sebou všechen bojeschopný lid a vytáhni proti Aji. Hleď, vydal jsem ti do rukou ajského krále i jeho lid, jeho město i jeho zemi. 2 Naložíš s Ajem a jeho králem, jako jsi naložil s Jerichem a jeho králem. Avšak kořist a dobytek si necháte jako lup. Postav proti němu za městem zálohy.“ 3 Jozue a všechen bojeschopný lid vytáhli proti Aji. Jozue vybral třicet tisíc mužů, udatných bohatýrů, a v noci je rozmístil. 4 Přikázal jim: „Hleďte, za městem se položte do zálohy proti městu. Příliš se od města nevzdalujte, buďte všichni připraveni. 5 Já a všechen lid, který bude se mnou, se k městu přiblížíme. Jakmile oni vytrhnou proti nám jako předtím, dáme se před nimi na útěk. 6 Ať za námi vytrhnou; odlákáme je od města, neboť si řeknou: ‚Utíkají před námi jako předtím.‘ Proto se dáme před nimi na útěk. 7 Pak vyrazíte ze zálohy a město obsadíte; Hospodin, váš Bůh, vám je vydal do rukou. 8 Až se města zmocníte, zapálíte je. Tak učiníte podle slova Hospodinova. Hleďte, to jsem vám přikázal.“ 9 Jozue je tedy rozmístil a oni se stáhli do zálohy a usadili se mezi Bét-elem a Ajem, západně od Aje. Jozue pak strávil tuto noc uprostřed lidu. 10 Za časného jitra vykonal Jozue přehlídku lidu. Pak táhl s izraelskými staršími před lidem na Aj. 11 S ním vytáhl všechen bojeschopný lid. Postupovali a došli až naproti městu. Utábořili se na sever od Aje. Mezi nimi a Ajem bylo údolí. 12 Jozue vybral asi pět tisíc mužů a postavil je do zálohy mezi Bét-elem a Ajem, západně od města. 13 Lid, celý tábor, zaujal postavení severně od města a zadní voj západně od města. Jozue odešel té noci doprostřed doliny. 14 Když to zpozoroval ajský král, on i všechen jeho lid, mužové města, za časného jitra rychle vytrhli do boje proti Izraeli v určený čas na okraj pustiny. Nevěděl však, že jsou proti němu za městem zálohy. 15 Když se Jozue a všechen Izrael měli s nimi střetnout, dali se na útěk směrem k poušti. 16 Tu byl křikem přivolán všechen lid, který byl v městě, aby je pronásledoval. Pronásledovali Jozua a dali se od města odlákat. 17 V Aji, totiž v Bét-elu, nezůstal nikdo, kdo by nevytrhl za Izraelem. Nechali město otevřené a pronásledovali Izraele. 18 I řekl Hospodin Jozuovi: „Pozvedni oštěp, který držíš v ruce, směrem k Aji, neboť jsem ti jej vydal do rukou.“ Jozue pozvedl oštěp, který držel v ruce, směrem k městu. 19 Jakmile pozvedl ruku, zálohy se ihned vyřítily ze svého postavení, přihnaly se, vpadly do města, dobyly je a ihned město zapálily. 20 Ajští muži se ohlédli a spatřili, jak z města vystupuje k nebi kouř. Nemohli však utéci sem ani tam, neboť i lid, který utíkal do pouště, se obrátil proti pronásledovatelům. 21 Když totiž Jozue a všechen Izrael viděli, že záloha dobyla město a že z města vystupuje kouř, obrátili se a pobíjeli ajské muže. 22 A ti z města jim vytrhli vstříc, takže Ajští byli Izraelem sevřeni z jedné i z druhé strany. Izraelci je pobíjeli, nenechali nikoho vyváznout a uniknout. 23 Ale ajského krále chytili živého a přivedli ho k Jozuovi. 24 Izrael pobil všechny obyvatele Aje na poli, v poušti, kam je pronásledovali. Všichni do jednoho padli ostřím meče. Pak se celý Izrael vrátil do Aje a vybil jej ostřím meče. 25 Všech mužů i žen, kteří toho dne padli, bylo dvanáct tisíc; padli všichni ajští muži. 26 Ale Jozue nespustil ruku s pozvednutým oštěpem dříve, dokud nebyli všichni obyvatelé Aje vyhubeni jako klatí. 27 Jen dobytek a kořist z města si Izrael nechal jako lup podle slova Hospodinova, které přikázal Jozuovi. 28 Jozue vypálil Aj a učinil jej navěky pahorkem sutin, místem zpustošeným, jak je tomu až dodnes. 29 Ajského krále dal pověsit na kůl, kde byl až do večera. Když slunce zapadalo, rozkázal Jozue, aby sňali jeho mrtvé tělo z kůlu. Pohodili je u vchodu do městské brány a navršili nad ním velikou hromadu kamení, která tam je až dodnes. 30 Tehdy zbudoval Jozue oltář Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele, na hoře Ébalu, 31 jak Izraelcům přikázal Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, tak jak je napsáno v Knize Mojžíšova zákona: oltář z neotesaných kamenů, neopracovaných železem. Na něm přinesli Hospodinu oběti zápalné a obětovali oběti pokojné. 32 Tam napsal v přítomnosti Izraelců na kamenech opis Mojžíšova zákona. 33 Všechen Izrael se svými staršími, správci a soudci stál po obou stranách schrány proti lévijským kněžím, kteří nosili schránu Hospodinovy smlouvy, i hosté a domorodci, polovina směrem k hoře Gerizímu a druhá polovina směrem k hoře Ébalu, jak kdysi přikázal Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, aby dávali požehnání izraelskému lidu. 34 Potom předčítal všechna slova Zákona, požehnání i zlořečení, přesně jak to je zapsáno v Knize Zákona. 35 Nebylo jediného slova přikázaného Mojžíšem, které by Jozue nepřečetl před celým shromážděním Izraele, včetně žen a dětí i těch, kdo žili mezi nimi jako hosté.

Dobytí Aje

1 Poté Hospodin řekl Jozuovi: „Neboj se a nestrachuj. Vezmi s sebou všechen bojeschopný lid a vytáhni proti Aji. Pohleď, dal jsem ti do rukou ajského krále a jeho lid i s jejich městem a územím. 2 S Ajem i s jeho králem naložíš stejně, jako jsi naložil s Jerichem a s jeho králem. Ukořistěné zboží a dobytek si ale můžete nechat pro sebe. Vzadu za městem si proti němu nachystej zálohu.“ 3 Jozue se tedy se vším bojeschopným lidem přichystal vytáhnout proti Aji. Vybral třicet tisíc udatných bojovníků a vypravil je v noci 4 s rozkazem: „Dávejte pozor! Budete vzadu za městem číhat v záloze. Nebuďte od města moc daleko. Všichni buďte připraveni. 5 Já a všechen lid, který bude se mnou, se zatím přiblížíme k městu. Vytáhnou proti nám jako prve a my se dáme na útěk. 6 Vydají se za námi, a tak je odlákáme od města. Řeknou si totiž: ‚Utíkají před námi jako prve.‘ Budeme tedy před nimi utíkat 7 a vy zatím vyrazíte ze zálohy, obsadíte město a Hospodin, váš Bůh, vám je vydá do rukou. 8 Až se města zmocníte, zapálíte ho; zachováte se podle Hospodinova slova. Držte se mých příkazů.“ 9 Vysláni Jozuem se tedy šli ukrýt do zálohy a zaujali místo mezi Bet-elem a Ajem, na západ od Aje. Té noci Jozue zůstal uprostřed lidu. 10 Brzy ráno Jozue sebral lid a spolu se stařešiny Izraele se vydal v jeho čele proti Aji. 11 Všechen bojeschopný lid táhl s ním. Když tam dorazili, zamířili přímo před město a utábořili se na sever od Aje. Mezi nimi a Ajem byla rokle. 12 Jozue vzal asi pět tisíc mužů a umístil je jako zálohu mezi Bet-elem a Ajem, na západ od města. 13 Hlavní voj lidu tedy stál severně od města, zadní voj pak západně od města. Té noci Jozue sestoupil do údolí. 14 Jakmile to spatřil ajský král, on i všechen lid, obyvatelé toho města, vyrazili brzy ráno na stanoviště před plání Arava, k bitvě proti Izraeli. Král ovšem nevěděl, že na něj za městem číhá záloha. 15 Jozue s celým Izraelem předstírali porážku a utíkali směrem k poušti. 16 Všechen lid ve městě byl zburcován, aby je pronásledovali. Hnali se za Jozuem, a tak se nechali odlákat od města. 17 V Aji a Bet-elu nezůstal nikdo, kdo by nevyrazil za Izraelem. Nechali město otevřené a pronásledovali Izrael. 18 Tehdy Hospodin řekl Jozuovi: „Napřáhni šavli, kterou máš v ruce, proti Aji, neboť je dám do tvých rukou.“ Jozue tedy napřáhl šavli ve své ruce proti Aji. 19 Jakmile ji napřáhl, ti, kdo číhali v záloze, rychle vstali a vyrazili ze svého místa. Vnikli do města, dobyli je a rychle je zapálili. 20 Ajští muži se ohlédli a hle – z města stoupal k nebi dým! Nemohli ovšem utéci ani tam, ani tam, protože lid prchající k poušti se obrátil proti pronásledovatelům. 21 Když totiž Jozue i všechen lid viděli, že záloha dobyla město a že z města stoupá dým, otočili se nazpět a udeřili na ajské muže. 22 (Ti se totiž z města vydali za nimi, takže je Izrael měl uprostřed.) Pobíjeli je z jedné i druhé strany, až nezůstal, kdo by přežil ani kdo by unikl. 23 Jen ajského krále zajali živého a přivlekli ho k Jozuovi. 24 Když byl Izrael hotov s pobíjením všech obyvatel Aje venku na poušti, kam je pronásledovali, dokud všichni do posledního nepadli ostřím meče, vrátil se celý Izrael do Aje a také tam je pobili ostřím meče. 25 Všech padlých toho dne bylo dvanáct tisíc mužů i žen – všichni obyvatelé Aje. 26 Jozue totiž nespustil ruku s napřaženou šavlí, dokud nebyli všichni obyvatelé Aje vyhlazeni jako proklatí. 27 Izrael si pro sebe nechal jen ukořistěný dobytek a zboží z onoho města, jak Hospodin určil Jozuovi. 28 Tak Jozue vypálil Aj a natrvalo jej obrátil v pustou hromadu sutin až dodnes. 29 Ajského krále pak nechal až do večera viset na kůlu. Když slunce zapadalo, Jozue dal jeho tělo sejmout z kůlu a pohodili je u vchodu do městské brány. Navršili nad ním velikou hromadu kamení, která je tam až dodnes.

Ebal a Gerizim

30 Jozue pak vystavěl Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele, oltář na hoře Ebal, 31 jak synům Izraele přikázal Hospodinův služebník Mojžíš. Jak je psáno v knize Mojžíšova zákona: „Oltář z netknutých kamenů, neopracovaných železem.“^[1] Na něm pak přinesli zápalné oběti Hospodinu a obětovali pokojné oběti. 32 Jozue tam napsal na kameny opis Mojžíšova zákona; zapsal jej v přítomnosti synů Izraele. 33 Celý Izrael se svými stařešiny, správci a soudci stál po obou stranách Truhly před levitskými kněžími, kteří nosí Truhlu Hospodinovy smlouvy. Stáli tam spolu cizinci i domácí, polovina proti hoře Gerizim a polovina proti hoře Ebal, jak kdysi přikázal Hospodinův služebník Mojžíš, že se má žehnat lidu Izraele.^[2] 34 Jozue pak předčítal všechna slova Zákona, požehnání i zlořečení, přesně jak je to psáno v knize Zákona. 35 Ze všeho, co Mojžíš přikázal, Jozue nevynechal ani slovo. Předčítal je celému shromáždění Izraele včetně žen a dětí i včetně cizinců pobývajících mezi nimi.

1 Dann sagte der HERR zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht und hab keine Angst! Nimm alle kriegstüchtigen Männer, brich auf und zieh nach Ha-Ai, die Trümmerstätte! Siehe, ich habe den König von Ha-Ai und sein Volk, seine Stadt und sein Land in deine Hand gegeben. 2 Du sollst es mit Ai und seinem König ebenso machen, wie du es mit Jericho und seinem König gemacht hast. Doch Beute von ihm und seinem Vieh dürft ihr für euch nehmen. Lege auf der Rückseite der Stadt einen Hinterhalt! 3 Da brach Josua mit dem ganzen Heer auf, um nach Ai hinaufzuziehen. Josua wählte dreißigtausend kampferprobte Männer aus und schickte sie bei Nacht weg 4 mit dem Befehl: Seht zu, dass ihr auf der Rückseite der Stadt im Hinterhalt liegt, aber nicht zu weit entfernt von der Stadt. Dort haltet euch alle bereit! 5 Ich aber werde mit allen Leuten, die bei mir sind, gegen die Stadt vorrücken, und wenn man dann wie beim ersten Mal einen Ausfall macht, werden wir vor ihnen fliehen. 6 Sie werden hinter uns herziehen, bis wir sie von der Stadt weggelockt haben; denn sie werden sagen: Sie fliehen vor uns wie beim ersten Mal. Und tatsächlich werden wir vor ihnen fliehen. (Jz 7,4) 7 Ihr aber werdet aus dem Hinterhalt hervorbrechen und die Stadt erobern. Der HERR, euer Gott, wird sie in eure Hand geben. 8 Wenn ihr dann die Stadt eingenommen habt, sollt ihr sie in Brand stecken. Handelt nach dem Wort des HERRN! Seht, ich habe es euch befohlen. 9 Dann schickte Josua sie weg und sie legten sich in den Hinterhalt. Sie lagen zwischen Bet-El und Ai westlich von Ai. Josua aber blieb die Nacht über beim Volk. 10 Früh am Morgen stand Josua auf, musterte das Volk und zog zusammen mit den Ältesten Israels an der Spitze des Volkes nach Ai hinauf. 11 Das ganze Heer zog mit ihm hinauf und rückte bis in die Nähe der Stadt vor. Im Norden von Ai schlugen sie ihr Lager auf. Das Tal lag zwischen ihm und Ai. 12 Dann nahm er etwa fünftausend Mann und legte sie westlich der Stadt, zwischen Bet-El und Ai, in einen Hinterhalt. 13 So stellten sie das Volk auf: Das ganze Lager war im Norden der Stadt und seine Nachhut westlich der Stadt. Josua aber ging in jener Nacht mitten in die Ebene. 14 Als das der König von Ai sah, da beeilten sich die Männer der Stadt und zogen frühmorgens heraus, Israel entgegen in die Schlacht zum Gefecht, der König und sein gesamtes Heer an einen bestimmten Ort vor der Steppe. Dabei wusste er nicht, dass man ihm auf der Rückseite der Stadt einen Hinterhalt gelegt hatte. 15 Josua und die Israeliten ließen sich von ihnen schlagen und flohen auf die Steppe zu. 16 Nun wurde das ganze Volk, das noch in der Stadt war, zu ihrer Verfolgung aufgeboten. Sie verfolgten Josua und wurden so von der Stadt weggelockt. 17 Niemand blieb in Ai und Bet-El zurück, der nicht herausgezogen wäre hinter Israel her. Sie ließen die Stadt offen zurück und verfolgten Israel. 18 Da sagte der HERR zu Josua: Streck das Sichelschwert in deiner Hand gegen Ai aus; denn ich gebe es in deine Hand. Denn das Volk, das zur Wüste hin geflohen war, wandte sich nun gegen den Verfolger. 21 Als nämlich Josua und ganz Israel sahen, dass aus der Stadt Rauch aufstieg, dass also die Männer aus dem Hinterhalt die Stadt eingenommen hatten, machten sie kehrt und schlugen die Männer von Ai. 22 Denn weil diese ihnen aus der Stadt nachgerückt waren, waren sie nun von beiden Seiten her mitten zwischen die Israeliten geraten. Die Israeliten schlugen sie, dass keiner von ihnen mehr übrig blieb, der hätte entkommen und sich in Sicherheit bringen können. 23 Den König von Ai aber nahmen sie lebend gefangen und brachten ihn zu Josua. 24 Als Israel sämtliche Bewohner von Ai, die ihm nachgejagt waren, ohne Ausnahme auf freiem Feld und in der Steppe mit scharfem Schwert getötet hatte und alle gefallen waren bis auf den letzten Mann, kehrte ganz Israel nach Ai zurück und machte alles mit der Schärfe des Schwertes nieder. 25 Es gab an jenem Tag insgesamt zwölftausend Gefallene, Männer und Frauen, die Gesamtheit der Männer von Ai. 26 Josua aber ließ seine Hand, die er mit dem Sichelschwert ausgestreckt hatte, nicht sinken, bis er an allen Bewohnern von Ai den Bann vollzogen hatte. 27 Nur das Vieh und die Beute von jener Stadt nahm Israel für sich als Beute, nach dem Wort, das der HERR Josua geboten hatte. 28 Dann brannte Josua Ai nieder und machte es für immer zu einem Trümmerhaufen und zu einem öden Platz; das ist es geblieben bis zum heutigen Tag. 29 Den König von Ai aber ließ er an einem Baum aufhängen; dort hing er bis zur Abenddämmerung. 30 Damals errichtete Josua auf dem Berg Ebal für den HERRN, den Gott Israels, einen Altar, (Dt 27,2) 31 wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, es den Israeliten geboten hatte und wie es im Buch der Weisung des Mose geschrieben steht, einen Altar aus unbehauenen Steinen, die kein eisernes Werkzeug berührt hatte. Auf diesem Altar brachte man dem HERRN Brandopfer dar und schlachtete Heilsopfer. (Ex 20,25) 32 Und dort schrieb er auf die Steine eine Abschrift der Weisung des Mose, die dieser geschrieben hatte vor den Augen der Israeliten. (Ex 24,1) 33 Ganz Israel und die Ältesten, die Listenführer und die Richter, standen zu beiden Seiten der Lade gegenüber den levitischen Priestern, den Trägern der Bundeslade des HERRN, dazu Fremde und Einheimische. Die eine Hälfte von ihnen war dem Berg Garizim zugewandt, die andere dem Berg Ebal, wie es Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, für die Segnung des Volkes Israel früher angeordnet hatte. The Fall of Ai

2 And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. Only its spoil and its livestock you shall take as plunder for yourselves. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. And they hurried to set the city on fire. 20 So when the men of Ai looked back, behold, the smoke of the city went up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that, for the people who fled to the wilderness turned back against the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city, and that the smoke of the city went up, then they turned back and struck down the men of Ai. 22 And the others came out from the city against them, so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. And Israel struck them down, until there was left none that survived or escaped. Joshua Renews the Covenant

30 At that time Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal, (Ex 20,24; Dt 27,4) 31 just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the people of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, “an altar of uncut stones, upon which no man has wielded an iron tool.” And they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 And there, in the presence of the people of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. (Dt 27,2) 33 And all Israel, sojourner as well as native born, with their elders and officers and their judges, stood on opposite sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded at the first, to bless the people of Israel.
