1 To když uslyšeli všickni králové, kteříž bydlili za Jordánem, na horách i na rovinách, a na všem břehu moře velikého naproti Libánu: Hetejský, Amorejský, Kananejský, Ferezejský, Hevejský a Jebuzejský, 2 Sebrali se spolu, aby bojovali proti Jozue a proti Izraeli jednomyslně. 3 Ale obyvatelé Gabaon uslyšavše, co učinil Jozue Jerichu a Hai, 4 Učinili i oni chytře. Nebo odšedše, ukázali se, jako by zdaleka poslové byli, a vzali pytle staré na osly své, a kožené láhvice vinné vetché, zedrané a zzašívané, 5 Obuv také starou a splácenou na nohy své, též šaty otřelé na sebe; a všecken chléb, kterýž sobě na cestu vzali, vyschlý byl a zdrobený. 6 I šli k Jozue do ležení v Galgala, a řekli jemu i mužům Izraelským: Z země daleké jsme přišli, protož nyní učiňte s námi smlouvu. 7 Tedy odpověděli muži Izraelští k Hevejským: Snad u prostřed nás vy bydlíte, i kterakž bychom s vámi učinili smlouvu? 8 Ale oni odpověděli Jozue: Služebníci tvoji jsme. Jimž řekl Jozue: Kdo pak jste, a odkud jste přišli? 9 Odpověděli jemu: Z země velmi daleké přišli služebníci tvoji ve jménu Hospodina Boha tvého; nebo jsme slyšeli pověst jeho a všecky věci, kteréž činil v Egyptě. 10 A všecko, což učinil dvěma králům Amorejským, kteříž bydlili za Jordánem, Seonovi, králi Ezebon, a Ogovi, králi Bázan, kterýž byl v Astarot. 11 I řekli nám starší naši a všickni obyvatelé země naší těmito slovy: Nabeřte sobě potravy na cestu, a jděte jim vstříc, a rcete jim: Služebníci vaši jsme, protož nyní učiňte s námi smlouvu. 12 Totoť jest chléb náš; horký jsme na cestu vzali z domů svých v ten den, když jsme vyšli, abychom k vám šli, a hle, nyní již vyschl a zdrobil se. 13 A tyto kožené láhvice vinné nové byly, když jsme je naplnili, a již hle, potrhané jsou; tolikéž tento oděv náš a obuv naše zvetšela, pro přílišnou cesty dalekost. 14 I přijali to muži ti z pokrmů jejich, a úst Hospodinových neotázali se. 15 A učinil s nimi Jozue pokoj, a všel s nimi v smlouvu, aby jich při životu zanechal; také i knížata shromáždění přísahu jim učinili. 16 Po třech pak dnech, po té smlouvě s nimi učiněné, uslyšeli, že by velmi blízko jich byli, a že by u prostřed nich bydlili. 17 Jdouce tedy synové Izraelští, přitáhli k městům jejich třetího dne; města pak jejich byla Gabaon a Kafira a Berot a Kariatjeharim. 18 Ale nezbili jich synové Izraelští, proto že přísahu jim učinili knížata shromáždění skrze Hospodina Boha Izraelského. A reptalo všecko shromáždění proti knížatům. 19 Tedy řekla všecka knížata všemu shromáždění: My jsme jim přísahu učinili skrze Hospodina Boha Izraelského, protož nyní nemůžeme se jich dotknouti. 20 Toto jim učiníme: Zanecháme jich při životu, aby nebylo na nás rozhněvání pro přísahu, kterouž jsme jim učinili. 21 Řekli jim knížata i to: Nechť jsou živi a drva sekají, a vodu nosí všemu shromáždění. I přestali na tom, jakož jim mluvila knížata. 22 Povolal jich pak Jozue a mluvil k nim, řka: Proč jste nás podvedli, řkouce: Velmi jsme dalecí od vás? A vy u prostřed nás bydlíte. 23 Protož nyní zlořečení jste, a nepřestanou z vás služebníci, a kteříž by dříví sekali a vodu nosili do domu Boha mého. 24 Kteříž odpovídajíce Jozue, řekli: Za věc jistou oznámeno bylo služebníkům tvým, kterak přikázal Hospodin Bůh tvůj Mojžíšovi služebníku svému, dáti vám zemi tuto, a vyhladiti všecky obyvatele země této před tváří vaší; protož strachovali jsme se vás, bojíce se za životy své před vámi, a učinili jsme to. 25 A hle, nyní v ruce tvé jsme; cožť se dobrého a spravedlivého vidí učiniti s námi, to učiň. 26 I učinil jim tak, a vysvobodil je z rukou synů Izraelských, aby jich nepobili. 27 A ustanovil je Jozue v ten den, aby dříví sekali a vodu nosili všemu shromáždění, i k oltáři Hospodinovu, až do tohoto dne, na místě, kteréž by vyvolil.

— Smlouva s Gibeóňany - Izrael vyjednává s domorodci a přijímá je do svého svazku, aby vykonávali pomocné práce při Hospodinově oltáři.

1 Když se o tom doslechli všichni králové, kteří byli z této strany Jordánu, v pohoří i v Přímořské nížině a na celém pobřeží Velkého moře směrem k Libanónu, totiž král chetejský, emorejský, kenaanský, perizejský, chivejský a jebúsejský, 2 shromáždili se, aby jednomyslně bojovali proti Jozuovi a Izraeli. 3 I obyvatelé Gibeónu se doslechli, jak Jozue naložil s Jerichem a Ajem. 4 Vymyslili si tedy také lest, že půjdou a budou se vydávat za poselstvo. Vložili na osly vetché pytle a zpuchřelé, popraskané a svazované vinné měchy, 5 na nohou měli vetché spravované střevíce a na sobě odřené pláště. I všechen chléb, jímž se zásobili, byl vyschlý a rozdrobený. 6 Tak přišli k Jozuovi do tábora v Gilgálu a řekli jemu i mužům izraelským: „Přišli jsme z daleké země. Uzavřete s námi smlouvu!“ 7 Ale izraelští muži Chivejcům odpověděli: „Možná, že sídlíte mezi námi; jakpak bychom mohli s vámi uzavřít smlouvu!“ 8 Řekli nato Jozuovi: „Jsme tvoji otroci.“ Jozue se jich otázal: „Kdo jste a odkud přicházíte?“ 9 Odpověděli mu: „Z velmi daleké země přišli tvoji otroci za jménem Hospodina, tvého Boha. Slyšeli jsme o něm zprávy, co všechno učinil v Egyptě 10 a jak naložil s dvěma emorejskými králi v Zajordání, s chešbónským králem Síchonem a s bášanským králem Ógem z Aštarótu. 11 Naši stařešinové a všichni obyvatelé naší země nás vyzvali: ‚Vezměte si s sebou zásoby na cestu, jděte jim vstříc a řekněte jim: Jsme vaši otroci. Uzavřete s námi smlouvu.‘ 12 Toto je náš chléb. Byl ještě horký, když jsme se jím zásobili při odchodu z našich domů, než jsme se vydali k vám. A teď se podívejte: je vyschlý a rozdrobený. 13 A tyto vinné měchy byly nové, když jsme je plnili. Podívejte se, jak popraskaly. A toto jsou naše pláště a střevíce; zvetšely, protože cesta byla velmi dlouhá.“ 14 Izraelští muži si tedy vzali z jejich zásob, aniž se ptali na Hospodinův výrok. 15 Jozue sjednal mír a uzavřel s nimi smlouvu, že je nechá naživu. Předáci izraelské pospolitosti jim to potvrdili přísahou. 16 Když uplynuly tři dny po tom, co s nimi uzavřeli smlouvu, doslechli se, že jsou z jejich blízkosti a že sídlí mezi nimi. 17 Izraelci totiž táhli dál a třetího dne přišli do jejich měst. Byla to města Gibeón, Kefíra, Beerót a Kirjat-jearím. 18 Ale Izraelci je nepobili, poněvadž se jim předáci izraelské pospolitosti zavázali přísahou při Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele. Proto celá pospolitost proti předákům reptala 19 a všichni předáci vysvětlovali celé pospolitosti: „My jsme jim přísahali při Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele, takže se jich nyní nemůžeme dotknout. 20 Musíme je nechat naživu, aby na nás nedolehlo Hospodinovo rozlícení pro přísahu, kterou jsme se jim zavázali.“ 21 O nich pak předáci řekli: „Ať zůstanou naživu, ale budou pro celou pospolitost sekat dříví a čerpat vodu.“ Tak o nich mluvili předáci. 22 Potom si je zavolal Jozue a promluvil k nim: „Proč jste nás obelstili? Tvrdili jste: ‚Jsme od vás velmi daleko,‘ a zatím sídlíte mezi námi! 23 Buďte za to prokleti. Nepřestanete být otroky. Budete sekat dříví a čerpat vodu pro dům mého Boha.“ 24 Odpověděli Jozuovi: „Tvým otrokům bylo oznámeno, co Hospodin, tvůj Bůh, přikázal svému služebníku Mojžíšovi, že vám dá celou zemi a že před vámi vyhladí všechny její obyvatele. Velmi jsme se báli, že nás připravíte o život. Proto jsme to udělali. 25 Teď jsme v tvých rukou. Nalož s námi, jak uznáš za dobré a správné.“ 26 I naložil s nimi tak, že je vyprostil z rukou Izraelců, takže je nezabili. 27 Ale onoho dne jim Jozue uložil, aby sekali dříví a čerpali vodu pro pospolitost a pro Hospodinův oltář, a to až dodnes, na místě, které vyvolí.

Jak bychom s vámi mohli uzavřít smlouvu?“ 8 „Jsme tvoji služebníci,“ řekli na to Jozuovi. Ten se jich ale ptal: „Co jste zač? Odkud jste přišli?“ 9 „Tvoji služebníci přišli z daleké, předaleké země díky pověsti Hospodina, tvého Boha,“ tvrdili mu. „Slyšeli jsme zprávu o něm i o všem, co udělal v Egyptě, 10 a také o všem, co udělal dvěma emorejským králům v Zajordání – chešbonskému králi Sichonovi a bášanskému králi Ogovi v Aštarotu. 11 Proto nám naši stařešinové i všichni obyvatelé naší země řekli: Vezměte s sebou jídlo na cestu, jděte jim naproti a řekněte jim: ‚Jsme vaši služebníci; uzavřete s námi smlouvu.‘ 12 Tohle je náš chléb. Když jsme se za vámi chystali, balili jsme ho doma ještě teplý – a podívejte se: je vyschlý, až se drolí. 13 Tyto měchy na víno byly nové, když jsme je plnili – a podívejte se: už popraskaly. Toto jsou naše šaty a obuv: tou předlouhou cestou úplně zchátraly.“ 14 Izraelští muži dali na jejich zásoby a neptali se na Hospodinův výrok. 15 Jozue jim zaručil pokoj a uzavřel s nimi smlouvu, že je nechá naživu. Také vůdcové obce jim to odpřisáhli. 16 Tři dny poté, co s nimi uzavřeli smlouvu, se ale dozvěděli, že ti lidé jsou z jejich sousedství – že vlastně bydlí uprostřed nich! 17 Synové Izraele totiž postupovali dál a třetího dne došli k jejich městům. Byla to města Gibeon, Kefira, Beerot a Kiriat-jearim. 18 Synové Izraele je ovšem nepobili, poněvadž jim vůdcové obce přísahali při Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele. Celá obec ale proti vůdcům reptala. 19 Všichni vůdcové jim proto vysvětlovali: „My jsme jim přísahali při Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele! Teď na ně přece nesmíme sáhnout. 20 Uděláme s nimi toto: Necháme je naživu, aby na nás nedopadl Boží hněv, kdybychom porušili přísahu, kterou jsme jim dali.“ 21 Vůdcové tehdy prohlásili: „Ať zůstanou naživu,“ a tak se z nich podle rozhodnutí vůdců stali dřevaři a nosiči vody pro celou obec. 22 Jozue si je potom zavolal a řekl jim: „Jak to, že jste nás podvedli?! Tvrdili jste: ‚Žijeme od vás velmi daleko.‘ A přitom bydlíte uprostřed nás! 23 Proklatci! Od teď už nikdy nepřestanete otročit: Budou z vás dřevaři a nosiči vody pro dům mého Boha.“ 24 Na to Jozuovi odpověděli: „Tvým služebníkům bylo spolehlivě oznámeno, co Hospodin, tvůj Bůh, přikázal svému služebníku Mojžíšovi. Prý vám dá celou tuto zem a všechny obyvatele této země před vámi vyhubí. Hrozně jsme se před vámi báli o život, proto jsme to udělali. 25 Teď jsme ve tvých rukou. Udělej s námi, co považuješ za dobré a správné.“ 26 Jozue s nimi tedy naložil takto: Vysvobodil je z rukou synů Izraele, aby je nepobili, 27 a téhož dne z nich udělal dřevaře a nosiče vody pro obec a pro Hospodinův oltář na místě, které vyvolí. A tak je tomu až dodnes.

1 Davon hörten alle Könige jenseits des Jordan, auf dem Gebirge, in der Schefela und an der ganzen Küste des großen Meeres bis hin zum Libanon: die Hetiter, die Amoriter, die Kanaaniter, die Perisiter, die Hiwiter und die Jebusiter. 2 Sie taten sich zusammen, um gemeinsam gegen Josua und Israel den Kampf aufzunehmen. 3 Die Bewohner von Gibeon hatten gehört, was Josua mit Jericho und Ai gemacht hatte. (Jz 6,20; Jz 8,26) 4 Da griffen auch sie zu einer List. Sie gingen und versahen sich mit Verpflegung und packten alte Säcke und alte, brüchige und geflickte Weinschläuche auf ihre Esel. 5 Sie zogen alte, geflickte Schuhe und alte Mäntel an. Das ganze Brot in ihrem Vorrat war trocken und krümelig. 6 So zogen sie zu Josua ins Lager nach Gilgal und sagten zu ihm und zu den Israeliten: Wir kommen aus einem fernen Land. So wurden sie Holzfäller und Wasserträger für die ganze Gemeinde, wie es ihnen die Vorsteher sagten. 22 Darauf rief Josua die Gibeoniter und sagte zu ihnen: Warum habt ihr uns getäuscht und gesagt: Wir wohnen sehr weit entfernt von euch, obwohl ihr mitten in unserem Gebiet wohnt? 23 Nun seid ihr verflucht; ihr müsst für immer Sklaven, Holzfäller und Wasserträger für das Haus meines Gottes sein. 24 Sie antworteten Josua: Deinen Knechten wurde genau berichtet, was der HERR, dein Gott, seinem Knecht Mose befohlen hat: euch das ganze Land zu geben und alle Bewohner des Landes vor euren Augen zu vernichten. Darum hatten wir große Angst vor euch und fürchteten um unser Leben. Deshalb haben wir das getan. 25 Jetzt sind wir in deiner Hand. Mach mit uns, was dir gut und recht erscheint! 26 Daraufhin tat er Folgendes: Er rettete sie zwar aus der Hand der Israeliten, sodass sie sie nicht töteten; 27 doch er machte sie an jenem Tag zu Holzfällern und Wasserträgern für die Gemeinde und für den Altar des HERRN an dem Ort, den er erwählen würde. Das sind sie bis zum heutigen Tag geblieben.

4 they on their part acted with cunning and went and made ready provisions and took worn-out sacks for their donkeys, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended, 5 with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes. 1 And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof ; 2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord. 3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, 4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; 5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. 6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. 7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? 8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? 9 And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, 10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. 11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. 12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: 13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. 14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD. 15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them. 16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. 17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim. 18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. 19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. 21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them. 22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us? 23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God. 24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. 25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do. 26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not. 27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
