1 Poslal pak byl Jozue, syn Nun, z Setim dva muže špehéře tajně, řka: Jděte, shlédněte zemi, zvlášť Jericho. I šli a vešli do domu ženy nevěstky, jejíž jméno bylo Raab, a odpočinuli tu. 2 Ale jakž oznámeno bylo králi Jericha a povědíno: Aj, muži přišli sem této noci z synů Izraelských, aby shlédli zemi, 3 Tedy poslal král Jericha k Raab, řka: Vyveď muže, kteříž přišli k tobě, a vešli do domu tvého, nebo k vyšpehování vší země přišli. 4 (Pojavši pak žena ty dva muže, skryla je.) Kteráž odpověděla: Pravda jest, přišliť jsou ke mně muži, ale nevěděla jsem, odkud jsou. 5 A když bránu zavírati měli v soumrak, vyšli muži ti, a nevím, kam jsou šli; hoňte je rychle, nebo dostihnete jich. 6 Ale ona rozkázala jim vstoupiti na střechu, a skryla je v pazdeří lněném, kteréž byla skladla na střeše. 7 Muži pak vyslaní honili je cestou Jordánskou až k brodům; a zavřína jest brána, jakž vyšli ti, kteříž je honili. 8 Prvé pak, než usnuli špehéři, vstoupila k nim ona na střechu, 9 A řekla mužům těm: Vím, že Hospodin dal vám zemi tuto, nebo připadl na nás strach váš, tak že oslábli všickni obyvatelé země před tváří vaší. 10 Slyšeli jsme zajisté, jak vysušil Hospodin vody moře Rudého před tváří vaší, když jste vyšli z Egypta, a co jste učinili dvěma králům Amorejským, kteříž byli za Jordánem, Seonovi a Ogovi, kteréž jste zahladili jako proklaté. 11 Což když jsme uslyšeli, osláblo srdce naše, aniž zůstává více v kom duše před tváří vaší, nebo Hospodin Bůh váš jest Bůh na nebi svrchu, i na zemi dole. 12 Nyní tedy, prosím, přisáhněte mi skrze Hospodina, poněvadž jsem učinila vám milosrdenství, že i vy učiníte s domem otce mého milosrdenství, a dáte mi znamení jisté, 13 Že budete živiti otce mého i matku mou, bratří mé i sestry mé a všecko, cožkoli jejich jest, a vysvobodíte duše naše od smrti. 14 I řekli jí muži ti: Duše naše za vás nechť jsou na smrt; jestliže však nepronesete řeči naší této, takť se jistě stane, že když nám dá Hospodin zemi tuto, tehdy učiníme s tebou milosrdenství a pravdu. 15 Protož spustila je oknem po provazu; nebo dům její byl při zdi městské, a na zdi ona bydlila. 16 I řekla jim: Jděte k této hoře, aby se nepotkali s vámi, kteříž vás honí, a krejte se tam za tři dni, až se oni zase navrátí, a potom půjdete cestou svou. 17 Tedy řekli muži k ní: Prosti budeme od této přísahy tvé, kterouž jsi zavázala nás, 18 Jestliže, když vejdeme do země, neuvážeš provázku tohoto z nití hedbáví červeného dvakrát barveného v tomto okně, jímž jsi nás spustila, také otce svého a matky své, i bratří svých, a všeho domu otce svého neshromáždíš-li k sobě do domu. 19 Také kdo by vyšel ven ze dveří domu tvého, krev jeho bude na hlavu jeho, ale my budeme bez viny; a každého toho, kdož bude s tebou v domě, jestliže by se kdo rukou dotekl, krev jeho na hlavy naše připadni. 20 Jestliže pak proneseš tuto řeč naši, budeme prosti od přísahy tvé, kterouž jsi nás zavázala. 21 Odpověděla ona: Nechť jest tak, jakž jste řekli. I propustila je a odešli; i uvázala provázek z hedbáví červeného dvakrát barveného v tom okně. 22 Odšedše pak, přišli na horu, a pobyli tam za tři dni, dokudž se nenavrátili, kteříž je honili; nebo jich hledali ti, kteříž je honili po všech cestách, ale nic nenalezli. 23 Ti pak dva muži sšedše s hory, navrátili se a přeplavili se přes Jordán; i přišli k Jozue, synu Nun, a vypravovali jemu všecko, co se s nimi dálo. 24 A řekli k Jozue: Dalť jest Hospodin v ruce naše všecku zemi, nebo se zděsili všickni obyvatelé země tváři naší.

Rychle je pronásledujte, ať je dostihnete.“ 6 Ona však je vyvedla na střechu a skryla je v pazdeří, které měla na střeše složené; 7 a oni ty muže pronásledovali směrem k Jordánu až k brodům. Jakmile pronásledovatelé vyšli, hned za nimi bránu zavřeli. 8 Zvědové se ještě neuložili k spánku, když k nim vstoupila na střechu. 9 Řekla těm mužům: „Vím, že Hospodin dal zemi vám. Padla na nás hrůza před vámi a všichni obyvatelé země propadli před vámi zmatku. 10 Slyšeli jsme, jak Hospodin před vámi vysušil vody Rákosového moře, když jste vycházeli z Egypta, a jak jste v Zajordání naložili se dvěma emorejskými králi, se Síchonem a Ógem, které jste zahubili jako klaté. 11 Jakmile jsme to uslyšeli, ztratili jsme odvahu a pozbyli jsme ducha, poněvadž Hospodin, váš Bůh, je Bohem nahoře na nebi i dole na zemi. 12 Zavažte se mi nyní prosím přísahou při Hospodinu, že také vy prokážete milosrdenství domu mého otce, jako jsem já prokázala milosrdenství vám. Dejte mi věrohodné znamení, 13 že ponecháte naživu mého otce a matku, mé bratry a sestry i vše, co jim náleží, a že nás vysvobodíte před smrtí.“ 14 Muži jí odpověděli: „Jsme odhodláni za vás zemřít. Nesmíte však vyzradit toto naše ujednání. Až nám Hospodin vydá zemi, prokážeme ti milosrdenství a osvědčíme věrnost.“ 15 Potom je spustila po provaze z okna; její dům byl totiž v hradební zdi, bydlela na hradbách. 16 A řekla jim: „Jděte na tamtu horu, aby na vás pronásledovatelé nenarazili, a skrývejte se tam po tři dny, dokud se nevrátí ti, kdo vás pronásledují; potom jděte svou cestou.“ 17 Muži ji upozornili: „Budeme zproštěni přísahy, jíž jsi nás zavázala, 18 jestliže neuvážeš, až vstoupíme do země, tuto šňůru z karmínových vláken v okně, z něhož jsi nás spustila, a neshromáždíš k sobě do domu svého otce a matku, své bratry a celý svůj dům. 19 Kdo vyjde ze dveří tvého domu ven, jeho krev padne na jeho hlavu, a my budeme bez viny. Avšak krev každého, kdo bude s tebou v domě, padne na naši hlavu, kdyby na něj někdo vztáhl ruku. 20 Vyzradíš-li toto naše ujednání, budeme zproštěni přísahy, jíž jsi nás zavázala.“ 21 Odvětila: „Staň se podle vašich slov.“ Nato je propustila a oni odešli. Pak uvázala na okno karmínovou šňůru. 22 Oni došli až na horu, kde zůstali tři dny, dokud se pronásledovatelé nevrátili; ti prohledali celou cestu, nikoho však nenašli. 23 Oba muži se tedy vrátili; sestoupili z hory, přešli Jordán a přišli k Jozuovi, synu Núnovu. Vyprávěli mu o všem, co se jim přihodilo. 24 Řekli Jozuovi: „Hospodin nám dal celou zemi do rukou. Všichni obyvatelé země propadli před námi zmatku.“

1 Jozue, syn Nunův, pak ze Šitimu tajně vyslal dva muže na výzvědy se slovy: „Jděte prohlédnout tu zem, a zvláště Jericho.“ Šli tedy a vstoupili do domu jedné nevěstky jménem Rachab, kde přespali. 2 Králi Jericha se doneslo: „Dnes večer sem přišli nějací Izraelci, aby proslídili zem.“ 3 Jerišský král proto vzkázal Rachab: „Vydej ty muže, co k tobě přišli, ty, co vstoupili k tobě do domu! Přišli proslídit celou zem!“ 4 Ta žena ale oba muže odvedla a ukryla. Proto odpověděla: „Ano, ti muži ke mně přišli, ale nevím odkud. 5 Odešli, když se za soumraku měla zavírat brána. Kam se vydali, nevím. Běžte rychle za nimi, ať je doženete!“ 6 (Rachab ale špehy odvedla na střechu a schovala je pod snopky lnu, které tam měla rozložené.) 7 Pronásledovatelé tedy vyrazili za nimi směrem k Jordánu, kde jsou brody. Jakmile opustili město, brána se ihned zavřela. 8 Zvědové ještě ani neulehli, když k nim na střechu vystoupila Rachab. 9 „Vím, že Hospodin vám dal tuto zem,“ řekla jim. „Vždyť jsme kvůli vám strachy bez sebe! Až nám Hospodin dá tuto zem, zachováme se k tobě milosrdně a věrně.“ 15 Spustila je tedy oknem po provaze; její dům byl totiž v hradební zdi, takže bydlela na hradbách. 16 „Běžte do hor,“ řekla jim, „ať vás pronásledovatelé nenajdou. Skrývejte se tam tři dny, dokud se nevrátí, a pak se vraťte svou cestou.“ 17 Muži jí řekli: „Budeme zproštěni přísahy, kterou jsi nás zavázala, 18 jestliže po našem vstupu do země neuvážeš tuto šňůru z karmínových provázků do okna, kterým jsi nás spustila, a neshromáždíš k sobě domů svého otce, matku, sourozence a celou rodinu svého otce. 19 Kdyby někdo vyšel ze dveří tvého domu, jeho krev padne na jeho hlavu, a my budeme bez viny. Kdyby se ale někdo dotkl kohokoli u tebe doma, jeho krev padne na naši hlavu. 20 Kdybys ale naši úmluvu vyzradila, budeme tvé přísahy zproštěni.“ 21 „Ať se stane, jak jste řekli,“ odpověděla jim. Potom se s nimi rozloučila a když odešli, uvázala do okna karmínovou šňůru. 22 Zvědové vyrazili, a když přišli do hor, zůstali tam tři dny, dokud se jejich pronásledovatelé nevrátili. Hledali je totiž po všech cestách, ale nenašli. 23 Oba muži se pak vydali zpět. Sestoupili z hor, přebrodili se, a když přišli k Jozuovi, synu Nunovu, vyprávěli mu všechno, co se jim přihodilo. 24 „Opravdu! Hospodin dal celou tu zem do našich rukou,“ řekli Jozuovi. „Všichni její obyvatelé se už před námi třesou!“

Sie brachen auf und kamen zu dem Haus einer Dirne namens Rahab; dort legten sie sich schlafen.^[1] (Jz 6,22) 2 Man meldete dem König von Jericho: Siehe, heute Nacht sind ein paar Männer hierhergekommen, Israeliten, um das Land auszukundschaften. 3 Da schickte der König von Jericho Boten zu Rahab und ließ ihr sagen: Gib die Männer heraus, die bei dir in deinem Haus eingekehrt sind; denn sie sind gekommen, um das ganze Land auszukundschaften. 4 Da nahm die Frau die beiden Männer und versteckte sie. Zu den Boten aber sagte sie: Ja, die Männer sind zu mir gekommen; doch ich habe nicht erfahren, woher sie waren. 5 Als das Stadttor bei Einbruch der Dunkelheit geschlossen werden sollte, sind die Männer weggegangen; ich habe nicht erfahren, wohin sie gegangen sind. Doch bei jedem, der mit dir im Haus bleibt, dessen Blut kommt auf unser Haupt. 20 Auch wenn du unsere Sache verrätst, sind wir frei von dem Eid, den du uns hast schwören lassen. 21 Sie antwortete: Es sei, wie ihr gesagt habt. Dann ließ sie die beiden gehen und band die purpurrote Schnur an das Fenster. 22 Die Männer gingen also und kamen ins Gebirge; dort blieben sie drei Tage, bis die Verfolger in die Stadt zurückgekehrt waren. Die Verfolger hatten sie überall gesucht, aber nicht gefunden. 23 Dann machten sich die beiden Männer auf den Rückweg. Sie stiegen vom Gebirge herab, überschritten den Jordan und kamen zu Josua, dem Sohn Nuns. Sie erzählten ihm alles, was ihnen zugestoßen war, 24 und sagten: Der HERR hat uns das ganze Land ausgeliefert; alle Bewohner des Landes vergehen aus Angst vor uns.

Rahab Hides the Spies

And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee. 15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. 16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way. 17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear. 18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father' household, home unto thee. 19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him. 20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear. 21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window. 22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not. 23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them: 24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.
