1 Tedy odpovídaje Elifaz Temanský, řekl: 2 Zdali moudrý vynášeti má umění povětrné, aneb naplňovati východním větrem břicho své, 3 Hádaje se slovy neprospěšnými, aneb řečmi neužitečnými? 4 Anobrž vyprazdňuješ i bázeň Boží, a modliteb k Bohu činiti se zbraňuješ. 5 Osvědčujíť zajisté nepravost tvou ústa tvá, ač jsi koli sobě zvolil jazyk chytrých. 6 Potupují tě ústa tvá, a ne já, a rtové tvoji svědčí proti tobě. 7 Zdaliž ty nejprv z lidí zplozen jsi, aneb prvé než pahrbkové sformován? 8 Zdaliž jsi tajemství Boží slyšel, že u sebe zavíráš moudrost? 9 Co víš, čehož bychom nevěděli? Čemu rozumíš, aby toho při nás nebylo? 10 I šedivýť i stařec mezi námi jest, ano i starší věkem než otec tvůj. 11 Zdali malá jsou tobě potěšování Boha silného, čili něco je zastěňuje tobě? 12 Tak-liž tě jalo srdce tvé, a tak-liž blíkají oči tvé, 13 Že smíš odpovídati Bohu silnému tak pyšně, a vypouštěti z úst svých ty řeči? 14 Nebo což jest člověk, aby se mohl očistiti, aneb spravedliv býti narozený z ženy? 15 An při svatých jeho není dokonalosti, a nebesa nejsou čistá před očima jeho, 16 Nadto ohavný a neužitečný člověk, kterýž pije nepravost jako vodu. 17 Já oznámím tobě, poslyš mne; to zajisté, což jsem viděl, vypravovati budu, 18 Což moudří vynesli a nezatajili, slýchavše od předků svých. 19 Jimž samým dána byla země, aniž přejíti mohl cizí prostředkem jejich. 20 Po všecky své dny bezbožný sám se bolestí trápí, po všecka, pravím léta, skrytá před ukrutníkem. 21 Zvuk strachu jest v uších jeho, že i v čas pokoje zhoubce připadne na něj. 22 Nevěří, by se měl navrátiti z temností, ustavičně očekávaje na sebe meče. 23 Bývá i tulákem, chleba hledaje, kde by byl, cítě, že pro něj nastrojen jest den temností. 24 Děsí jej nátisk a ssoužení, kteréž se silí proti němu, jako král s vojskem sšikovaným. 25 Nebo vztáhl proti Bohu silnému ruku svou, a proti Všemohoucímu postavil se. 26 Útok učinil na něj, na šíji jeho s množstvím zdvižených štítů svých. 27 Nebo přiodíl tvář svou tukem svým, tak že se mu nadělalo faldů na slabinách. 28 A bydlil v městech zkažených, a v domích, v nichž žádný nebydlil, kteráž v hromady rumu obrácena byla. 29 Avšak nezbohatneť, aniž stane moc jeho, aniž se rozšíří na zemi dokonalost takových. 30 Nevyjde z temností, mladistvou ratolest jeho usuší plamen, a tak zahyne od ducha úst svých. 31 Ale nevěří, že v marnosti jest ten, jenž bloudí, a že marnost bude směna jeho. 32 Před časem svým vyťat bude, a ratolest jeho nebude se zelenati. 33 Zmaří, jako vinný kmen nezralý hrozen svůj, a svrže květ svůj jako oliva. 34 Nebo shromáždění pokrytce spustne, a oheň spálí stany oslepených dary. 35 Kteřížto když počali ssužování, a porodili nepravost, hned břicho jejich strojí jinou lest.

1 Na to navázal Elífaz Témanský slovy: 2 „Může moudrý člověk hlásat tak naduté vědomosti, naplnit si břicho větrem od východu? 3 Obhajovat se slovem, jež k ničemu není, řečmi, které neprospějí? 4 Ty sám porušuješ bázeň Boží, rozjímat před Bohem znemožňuješ. 5 Tvá ústa jsou zajedno s tvou nepravostí, jazyk chytrácký jsi zvolil. 6 Ne já, nýbrž tvá ústa tě usvědčují ze svévole, tvoje rty vypovídají proti tobě. 7 Jsi snad zrozen jako první z lidí, přišels na svět dříve než pahorky? 8 Vyslechls důvěrný rozhovor Boží, že strhuješ jen na sebe moudrost? 9 Co víš, abychom to nevěděli, čemu rozumíš, a nám to není známé ? 10 Šedivý i kmet jsou mezi námi, věkem ctihodnější než tvůj otec. 11 Boží útěchy jsou tobě málo, když láskyplně s tebou mluví? 12 Co tě připravuje o rozum? Proč blýskáš očima? 13 Svým duchem se stavíš proti Bohu, vypouštíš z úst nehorázná slova. 14 Co je člověk? Je snad bez poskvrny? Což může být spravedlivý, kdo se zrodil z ženy? 15 Hle, on ani na své svaté nedá a nebesa nejsou v jeho očích bez poskvrny, 16 což teprve ohavný a zvrhlý člověk, který pije podlost jako vodu?

— Svévolníci žijí ve strachu

17 Poslouchej mě, co ti sdělím. Budu ti vyprávět, co jsem uzřel, 18 co hlásali moudří, co jim netajili jejich otcové, 19 ti, jimž jediným byla dána země, takže cizák mezi nimi nepřecházel: 20 Svévolník se úzkostlivě chvěje po všechny dny, hrůzovládci počet jeho let je ukryt. 21 Jeho uši slyší zvuk strašlivých zvěstí, v čas pokoje přijde na něj zhoubce. 22 Nevěří, že by se z temnot vrátil – je vyhlédnut pro meč. 23 Poplašeně bloudí, že není chléb, ví, že je mu připraven den temnot. 24 Soužení a úzkosti ho přepadají, dotírají na něho jako král k útoku připravený, 25 neboť vztáhl ruku proti Bohu, počínal si vyzývavě proti Všemocnému, 26 rozběhl se proti němu se skloněnou šíjí, pod hustým krunýřem svých štítů. 27 Svoji tvář zahalil tukem, ztučněl na slabinách. 28 Usadil se ve zničených městech, v neobývatelných domech, hrozících zřícením. 29 Nezůstane bohatý a jeho statek neobstojí, jeho majetek se na zemi nerozmůže. 30 Nevyjde z temnot, jeho výhonek sežehne plamen; sám zajde dechem svých úst. 31 Ač nevěří v šalebnost, bude jí zaveden, výměnou sklidí zase jen faleš. 32 Než vyprší jeho den, plné odměny se dočká, jeho ratolest se nebude zelenat, 33 bude jako vinná réva, když shazuje nedozrálé hrozny, nebo jak oliva shazující květy. 34 Spolek rouhačů zůstane neplodný, oheň zhltá stany úplatkářů; 35 plodí trápení a rodí ničemnosti, jejich lůno připravuje lest.“

Ohrožuješ zbožnost!

1 Elifaz Temanský mu na to řekl: 2 „Má mudrc hlásat jalové názory, v nitru se nadouvat větrem východním? 3 Má se hádat slovy bez smyslu a řečmi bez užitku? 4 Ty ale ohrožuješ zbožnost a bráníš rozjímání před Bohem! 5 Tvá ústa totiž vede špatnost a rozhodl ses mluvit prohnaně. 6 Tvá ústa – ne já – tě odsoudí, usvědčují tě vlastní rty! 7 Copak ses narodil jako první člověk? Přišel jsi na svět před horami? 8 To jsi naslouchal Boží tajné radě? Veškerá moudrost patří ti? 9 Copak víš něco, co my nevíme? Čemu rozumíš, a my ne? 10 Na naší straně jsou kmeti šediví, i tvého otce předčí věkem svým. 11 To ti nestačí ta Boží útěcha, nelíbí se ti slova laskavá? 12 Čím ses tak nechal unést v srdci, co ti tak zatemnilo oči, 13 že proti Bohu obracíš svůj hněv a z úst vypouštíš takovouto řeč? 14 Co je člověk? Může snad být čistý? Může být v právu, kdo je z ženy zrozený? 15 Ani na své anděly se Bůh nespoléhá, ani nebe není ryzí před jeho očima. 16 Co potom člověk zlý a zkažený, jenž hřeší, jako by vodu pil! 17 Něco ti povím, poslouchej, to, co jsem viděl, ti budu vyprávět, 18 to, co hlásají mudrci, když netají, co od svých předků přijali 19 (země byla dána jenom jim, nikdo cizí k nim tenkrát nepatřil): 20 Darebák trpí bolestí po všechny své dny, roky tyrana jsou spočteny. 21 Děsí se toho, co mu v uších zní, když má klid, napadá ho útočník. 22 Nevěří, že by unikl temnotě, neustále nad ním visí meč. 23 Bloudí tu jako potrava pro supy, ví, že ho očekává den temnoty. 24 Úzkost ho svírá, tíseň děsí ho, je jako král, jenž čeká na útok. 25 To proto, že proti Bohu vztáhl ruku, proti Všemohoucímu se postavil, 26 tvrdošíjně se vrhl proti němu obrněn svým štítem mohutným. 27 Svou tvář sice nechal zarůst tukem, sádlem si pokryl slabiny, 28 bude však bydlet ve zbořených městech, v domech, v kterých se nebydlí, které se rozpadají v sutiny. 29 Bohatý nezůstane, jeho moc neobstojí, jeho vliv nebude se šířit po zemi. 30 Takový neunikne temnotě, jeho výhonek plamen sežehne, dech Božích úst ho odvane. 31 Ať nikdo marně nespoléhá na marnost – prázdnota bude jeho odplatou! 32 Uschne, než přijde jeho čas, jeho větve se nebudou zelenat. 33 Bude jak réva, jež ztrácí hrozny nezralé, jako oliva, jež setřásá svůj květ. 34 Spolek bezbožných je neplodný, stany úplatkářů pohltí plameny. 35 Počnou trápení a zlo porodí, v jejich nitru se líhnou lsti!“
