1 Tedy přitáhl Náhas Ammonitský, a položil se proti Jábes v Gálad. I řekli všickni muži Jábes k Náhasovi: Učiň s námi smlouvu, a budemeť sloužiti. 2 Jimž odpověděl Náhas Ammonitský: Na ten způsob učiním s vámi smlouvu, jestliže každému z vás vyloupím oko pravé, a uvedu to pohanění na všecken Izrael. 3 I řekli jemu starší Jábes: Propůjč nám sedm dní, ať rozešleme posly po všech končinách Izraelských, a nebude-li žádného, kdo by nás vysvobodil, tedy vyjdeme k tobě. 4 Když pak přišli ti poslové do Gabaa Saulova, a mluvili ta slova v uši lidu, pozdvihli všickni hlasu svého a plakali. 5 A aj, Saul šel za voly s pole. I řekl Saul: Co je lidu, že pláče? I vypravovali jemu slova mužů Jábes. 6 Tedy sstoupil Duch Boží na Saule, když uslyšel slova ta, a rozhněvala se prchlivost jeho náramně. 7 A vzav pár volů, rozsekal je na kusy, a rozeslal po všech krajinách Izraelských po týchž poslích, řka: Kdo by koli nešel za Saulem a za Samuelem, tak se stane s voly jeho. I připadl strach Hospodinův na lid, a vyšli jako muž jeden. 8 I sečtl je v Bezeku; a bylo synů Izraelských třikrát sto tisíc, a mužů Juda třidceti tisíců. 9 I řekli těm poslům, kteříž byli přišli: Takto povíte mužům Jábes v Galád: Zítra budete vysvobozeni, když slunce obejde. I přišli poslové, a oznámili mužům Jábes, kteřížto zradovali se. 10 Tedy řekli muži Jábes Ammonitským: Ráno vyjdeme k vám, abyste nám učinili, cožkoli se vám za dobré viděti bude. 11 Nazejtří pak rozdělil Saul lid na tři houfy; i vskočili do prostřed vojska v čas jitřního bdění, a bili Ammonitské, až slunce dobře vzešlo; kteříž pak byli pozůstali, rozprchli se, tak že nezůstalo z nich ani dvou pospolu. 12 I řekl lid Samuelovi: Kdo jest ten, jenž pravil: Zdali Saul kralovati bude nad námi? Vydejte ty muže, ať je zbijeme. 13 Ale Saul řekl: Nebudeť dnes žádný zabit, poněvadž dnes učinil Hospodin vysvobození v Izraeli. 14 I řekl Samuel lidu: Přiďte, a poďme do Galgala, obnovíme tam království. 15 Šel tedy všecken lid do Galgala, a ustanovili tam Saule za krále před Hospodinem v Galgala, a obětovali také tam oběti pokojné před Hospodinem. I veselil se tam Saul a všickni muži Izraelští velmi velice.

1 Tu přitáhl Náchaš Amónský a utábořil se proti Jábeši v Gileádu. Všichni jábešští muži Náchašovi řekli: „Uzavři s námi smlouvu a budeme tvými otroky.“ 2 Náchaš Amónský jim odpověděl: „Uzavřu ji s vámi tím způsobem, že každému z vás vyloupnu pravé oko. Tak uvedu pohanu na celý Izrael.“ 3 Jábešští starší mu řekli: „Poskytni nám sedm dní. Rozešleme posly do celého izraelského území. Nebude-li nikoho, kdo by nás zachránil, vyjdeme k tobě.“ 4 I přišli poslové do Gibeje Saulovy a přednesli ta slova lidu. Všechen lid se dal do hlasitého pláče. 5 Saul šel právě za dobytkem z pole. Tázal se: „Co je lidu, že pláče?“ A oni mu sdělili slova jábešských mužů. 6 Jakmile Saul ta slova uslyšel, zmocnil se ho duch Boží. Vzplanul nesmírným hněvem. 7 Vzal spřežení dobytka, rozsekal je na kusy a rozeslal po poslech do celého izraelského území se vzkazem: „Tohle se stane s dobytkem každému, kdo nevytáhne za Saulem a Samuelem.“ Na lid padl strach před Hospodinem, i vytáhli jako jeden muž. 8 Saul jim dal nastoupit v Bezeku: Izraelců bylo tři sta tisíc a judských mužů třicet tisíc. 9 Přišlým poslům řekli: „Vyřiďte mužům v Jábeši Gileádském toto: Zítra za slunečního žáru vám přijde vysvobození.“ I přišli poslové a oznámili to jábešským mužům a ti se zaradovali. 10 Jábešští mužové vzkázali Náchašovi: „Zítra vyjdeme k vám. Pak s námi udělejte, co uznáte za dobré.“ 11 Nazítří Saul rozestavil lid do tří oddílů a za jitřní hlídky vtrhli doprostřed ležení a pobíjeli Amóna až do denního žáru; ti, kteří zůstali, se rozprchli, ani dva z nich nezůstali pospolu. 12 Tu lid řekl Samuelovi: „Kdo říkal: ‚To Saul má nad námi kralovat?‘ Vydejte ty muže, ať je usmrtíme!“ 13 Ale Saul řekl: „Dnešního dne nebude nikdo usmrcen, neboť dnes Hospodin připravil Izraeli vysvobození.“ 14 A Samuel vybídl lid: „Nuže, pojďme do Gilgálu, obnovíme tam království.“ 15 Všechen lid šel tedy do Gilgálu a před Hospodinem tam v Gilgálu nastolili Saula za krále. Slavili tam před Hospodinem hody oběti pokojné a Saul se tam se všemi izraelskými muži převelice radoval.

Záchrana Jábeše

1 Potom přitáhl Nachaš Amonský a utábořil se proti Jábeš-gileádu. Všichni obyvatelé Jábeše Nachašovi vzkázali: „Uzavři s námi smlouvu a budeme ti sloužit.“ 2 Nachaš Amonský jim ale odpověděl: „Uzavřu ji s vámi tak, že každému z vás vyloupnu pravé oko, abych potupil celý Izrael.“ 3 Stařešinové z Jábeše ho požádali: „Dej nám sedm dní, ať rozešleme posly do celého Izraele. Pokud nás nikdo nepřijde zachránit, vzdáme se ti.“ 4 Když pak ti poslové přišli do Gibeje Saulovy a vyprávěli to všechno lidu, dali se všichni do hlasitého pláče. 5 Saul se právě vracel se svým dobytkem z pole. „Co je lidem, že pláčou?“ ptal se. A tak mu vyprávěli, co říkali obyvatelé Jábeše. 6 Jakmile Saul ta slova uslyšel, zmocnil se ho Duch Hospodinův a vzplanul nesmírným hněvem. 7 Vzal jeden pár volů, rozsekal je na kusy a rozeslal po těch poslech do celého Izraele se slovy: „Takhle dopadne dobytek toho, kdo nejde se Saulem a Samuelem!“ Na lid padla hrůza z Hospodina a vytáhli jako jeden muž. 8 Nechal je nastoupit v Bezeku: Izraelců bylo 300 000 a judských mužů 30 000. 9 Poslům, kteří za nimi přišli, pak řekli: „Toto vzkažte obyvatelům Jábeš-gileádu: Zítra okolo poledne k vám přijde záchrana.“ Poslové se tedy vrátili a oznámili to obyvatelům Jábeše. Ti se zaradovali 10 a vzkázali Amoncům: „Zítra se vám vzdáme a vy s námi naložíte, jak uznáte za vhodné.“ 11 Druhého dne Saul rozdělil své muže do tří oddílů. Během poslední hlídky nad ránem vpadli do tábora a pobíjeli Amonce až do poledne. Nějací zbyli, ale ti se rozutekli, takže z nich nezůstali ani dva pospolu. 12 Lid tehdy řekl Samuelovi: „Kdo že se ptal: ‚To nám bude kralovat Saul?‘ Dej nám ty muže, ať je zabijeme!“ 13 Saul ale prohlásil: „V tento den nebude nikdo zabit; Hospodin dnes přece Izraeli daroval vítězství.“ 14 Samuel nato řekl lidu: „Pojďme teď do Gilgalu a potvrdíme tam království.“ 15 A tak se všechen lid vydal do Gilgalu, kde Saula před Hospodinem prohlásili za krále. Obětovali před Hospodinem pokojné oběti a Saul tam se všemi Izraelci pořádal velikou oslavu.

Wenn sich niemand findet, der uns retten kann, werden wir zu dir hinauskommen. 2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus bring disgrace on all Israel.” (Gn 34,14; Nu 16,14; 1S 17,26) 3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days’ respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.” 4 When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, and all the people wept aloud.
