1 Mluvil pak Samuel ke všemu Izraelovi: Aj, uposlechl jsem hlasu vašeho ve všem, což jste mluvili ke mně, a ustanovil jsem nad vámi krále. 2 A nyní aj, král jde před vámi, já pak zstaral jsem se a ošedivěl, a synové moji, aj, mezi vámi jsou. Já také chodil jsem před vámi od své mladosti až do dnešního dne. 3 A však aj, teď jsem. Vydejte svědectví proti mně před Hospodinem a před pomazaným jeho, vzal-li jsem čího vola, aneb vzal-li jsem čího osla, utiskl-li jsem koho, ublížil-li jsem komu, aneb vzal-li jsem od koho úplatek, abych na něm přehlédl něco, a navrátím vám. 4 Odpověděli: Neutiskl jsi nás, aniž jsi ublížil nám, aniž jsi co vzal z ruky kterého člověka. 5 Řekl ještě jim: Svědek jest Hospodin proti vám, svědek jest i pomazaný jeho v tento den, že jste nenalezli při mně ničehož. I řekl lid: Svědek jest. 6 Tedy řekl Samuel lidu: Hospodin jest svědek, kterýž učinil Mojžíše a Arona, a kterýž vyvedl otce vaše z země Egyptské. 7 Protož nyní postavte se, ať s vámi v soud vejdu před Hospodinem o všecky spravedlivé skutky Hospodinovy, kteréž učinil s vámi i s otci vašimi. 8 Když byl všel Jákob do Egypta, volali otcové vaši k Hospodinu; i poslal Hospodin Mojžíše a Arona, kteříž vyvedli otce vaše z Egypta, a osadili je na tomto místě. 9 A když se zapomenuli na Hospodina Boha svého, vydal je v ruku Zizary, knížete vojska Azor, a v ruku Filistinských, též v ruku krále Moábského, kteříž bojovali proti nim. 10 Ale když volali k Hospodinu a řekli: Zhřešili jsme, nebo jsme opustili Hospodina, a sloužili jsme Bálim a Astarot, protož nyní vysvoboď nás z ruky nepřátel našich, a sloužiti budeme tobě: 11 I poslal Hospodin Jerobále a Bedana a Jefte a Samuele, a vytrhl vás z ruky nepřátel vašich okolních, a bydlili jste bezpečně. 12 Potom vidouce, že Náhas král synů Ammon přitáhl proti vám, řekli jste mi: Nikoli, ale král bude kralovati nad námi; ješto Hospodin Bůh váš jest králem vaším. 13 Nyní tedy, aj, král, kteréhož jste zvolili, za něhož jste žádali, a aj, Hospodin ustanovil ho nad vámi králem. 14 Budete-li se báti Hospodina, a jemu sloužiti a poslouchati hlasu jeho, a nebudete-li se zpěčovati řeči Hospodinově, tak i vy i král, kterýž kraluje nad vámi, ostojíte, jdouce za Hospodinem Bohem vaším. 15 Pakli nebudete poslouchati hlasu Hospodinova, ale odporni budete řeči jeho, bude ruka Hospodinova proti vám, jako i proti otcům vašim. 16 Ještě se teď pozastavte, a vizte věc tuto velikou, kterouž učiní Hospodin před očima vašima. 17 Zdaliž není dnes žeň pšeničná? Volati budu k Hospodinu, i vydá hřímání a déšť, tak že poznati a viděti musíte, jak jest to velmi zlá věc, kteréž jste se dopustili před očima Hospodinovýma, žádavše sobě krále. 18 Protož volal Samuel k Hospodinu, a vydal Hospodin hřímání a déšť v ten den. I bál se všecken lid Hospodina velmi i Samuele. 19 A řekl všecken lid Samuelovi: Modl se za služebníky své Hospodinu Bohu svému, abychom nezemřeli; nebo jsme přidali ke všem hříchům našim i toto zlé, že jsme sobě žádali krále. 20 I řekl Samuel lidu: Nebojte se. Učiniliť jste sic všecko to zlé, však proto neodstupujte zpět od Hospodina, ale služte Hospodinu celým srdcem svým. 21 Neodstupujte, pravím, následujíce marnosti, totiž cizích bohů, kteříž nic neprospívají, aniž vysvobozují, nebo jsou marnost. 22 Neopustíť zajisté Hospodin lidu svého pro jméno své veliké; nebo zalíbilo se Hospodinu, aby vás sobě vzdělal v lid. 23 Ode mne také odstup to, abych měl hřešiti proti Hospodinu, a přestávati modliti se za vás, nýbrž navoditi vás budu na cestu dobrou a přímou. 24 A však bojte se Hospodina a služte jemu v pravdě celým srdcem svým; nebo vidíte, jak veliké věci učinil s vámi. 25 Jestliže pak předce zle činiti budete, i vy i král váš zahynete.

Vypovídejte proti mně před Hospodinem i před jeho pomazaným, zdali jsem vzal někomu býka či osla, zdali jsem někoho vydíral a někomu křivdil, zdali jsem od někoho vzal úplatek a nad něčím přivřel oči, a já vám to nahradím.“ 4 Odvětili: „Nevydíral jsi nás a nekřivdil jsi nám a nic jsi od nikoho nevzal.“ 5 Řekl jim: „Hospodin je svědkem proti vám, i jeho pomazaný je dnešního dne svědkem, že jste na mně nic neshledali.“ Lid odvětil: „Je svědkem.“ 6 Samuel pak řekl lidu: „Ano, Hospodin, který učinil Mojžíše a Árona a který přivedl vaše otce z egyptské země. 7 Nyní předstupte! Povedu s vámi před Hospodinem soud o všech Hospodinových spravedlivých činech, které konal pro vás a pro vaše otce. 8 Když Jákob přišel do Egypta a vaši otcové úpěli k Hospodinu, Hospodin poslal Mojžíše a Árona a ti vyvedli vaše otce z Egypta a usadili je na tomto místě. 9 Oni však na Hospodina, svého Boha, zapomněli. Proto je vydal napospas Síserovi, veliteli chasórského vojska, i Pelištejcům a moábskému králi; ti bojovali proti nim. 10 Tu úpěli k Hospodinu a říkali: ‚Zhřešili jsme, neboť jsme opustili Hospodina a sloužili jsme baalům a aštartám, ale nyní nás vysvoboď z rukou našich nepřátel a budeme sloužit tobě.‘ 11 Hospodin tedy poslal Jerubaala, Bedána, Jiftácha a Samuela a vysvobodil vás z rukou vašich okolních nepřátel, takže jste sídlili v bezpečí. 12 Když jste viděli, že na vás táhne Náchaš, král Amónovců, řekli jste mi: ‚Nikoli, ať nad námi kraluje král,‘ ačkoli vaším králem je Hospodin, váš Bůh. 13 Nuže tady je král, kterého jste si zvolili a vyžádali. Ano, Hospodin vám dal krále. 14 Jestliže se budete Hospodina bát, jemu sloužit a poslouchat ho, nebudete-li se vzpírat Hospodinovým rozkazům, obstojíte vy i král, který nad vámi kraluje; půjdete-li ovšem za Hospodinem, svým Bohem. 15 Jestliže však nebudete Hospodina poslouchat a budete se Hospodinovým rozkazům vzpírat, dolehne Hospodinova ruka na vás i na vaše otce. 16 Nyní předstupte! Hleďte na tuto velikou věc, kterou Hospodin učiní před vašima očima. 17 Není právě pšeničná žatva? Budu volat k Hospodinu a on způsobí hromobití a déšť. Tak očividně poznáte, jak velmi zlé je v Hospodinových očích to, čeho jste se dopustili tím, že jste si vyžádali krále.“ 18 A tak Samuel volal k Hospodinu a Hospodin onoho dne způsobil hromobití a déšť. A všechen lid se velice bál Hospodina i Samuela. 19 I řekl všechen lid Samuelovi: „Modli se k Hospodinu, svému Bohu, za své služebníky, abychom nezemřeli za to, že jsme ke všem svým hříchům přidali ještě to zlé, že jsme si vyžádali krále.“ 20 Nato řekl Samuel lidu: „Nebojte se. Ano, dopustili jste se všeho toho zla, avšak neodchylujte se od Hospodina a služte Hospodinu celým srdcem. 21 Neuchylujte se k nicotám, které neprospějí a nevysvobodí; vždyť jsou jen nicotou. 22 Hospodin pro své veliké jméno svůj lid nezavrhne, vždyť z vás hodlá učinit svůj lid. 23 Jsem dalek toho, abych proti Hospodinu hřešil a přestal se za vás modlit. I nadále vás budu vyučovat dobré a přímé cestě. 24 Jen se bojte Hospodina a věrně mu služte celým srdcem. Hleďte, co velikého s vámi učinil. 25 Jestliže však budete kupit zlo na zlo, budete smeteni jak vy, tak váš král.“

Budu volat k Hospodinu, aby seslal hromobití a déšť. Tehdy jasně pochopíte, jak veliké zlo jste v Hospodinových očích spáchali, když jste si vyžádali krále.“ 18 Samuel tedy volal k Hospodinu a Hospodin toho dne seslal hromobití a déšť. Všechen lid pak měl před Hospodinem i před Samuelem velikou bázeň. 19 „Modli se za své služebníky k Hospodinu, svému Bohu, abychom nezemřeli,“ řekl pak všechen lid Samuelovi. „Ke všem svým hříchům jsme přidali ještě tu zlou věc, že jsme si vyžádali krále!“ 20 „Nebojte se,“ odpověděl jim Samuel. „Provedli jste sice všechno to zlo, jen se ale neodvracejte od Hospodina, ale služte mu celým srdcem. 21 Neodvracejte se k marnostem, které nemohou nijak prospět ani zachránit – vždyť jsou to marnosti! 22 Hospodin pro své veliké jméno svůj lid neopustí, protože se rozhodl učinit vás svým lidem. 23 Také mne ať ani nenapadne hřešit proti Hospodinu a přestat se za vás modlit. Budu vám ukazovat cestu dobrou a přímou. 24 Jen ctěte Hospodina a služte mu věrně celým srdcem. Považte, jak veliké věci pro vás vykonal. 25 Budete-li však přesto jednat zle, budete i se svým králem zničeni.“
