1Quand Jésus eut fini de donner toutes ces instructions, il dit à ses disciples: (Mc 14:1; Lc 22:1; Jn 11:47)2Vous savez que la fête de la Pâque aura lieu dans deux jours. C’est alors que le Fils de l’homme sera livré pour être crucifié.3Alors, les chefs des prêtres et les responsables du peuple se rassemblèrent dans la cour du grand-prêtre Caïphe;4ils décidèrent d’un commun accord de s’emparer de Jésus par ruse pour le faire mourir.5Cependant ils se disaient: Il ne faut pas agir pendant la fête, pour ne pas provoquer d’émeute parmi le peuple.
L’onction à Béthanie
6Jésus se trouvait à Béthanie, dans la maison de Simon, le lépreux. (Mc 14:3; Jn 12:1)7Une femme s’approcha de lui, tenant un flacon d’albâtre rempli d’un parfum de myrrhe de grande valeur[1]. Pendant que Jésus était à table, elle répandit ce parfum sur sa tête.8En voyant cela, les disciples s’indignèrent et dirent: Pourquoi un tel gaspillage?9On aurait pu vendre ce parfum pour un bon prix et donner l’argent aux pauvres!10Mais, se rendant compte de cela, Jésus leur dit: Pourquoi faites-vous de la peine à cette femme? Ce qu’elle vient d’accomplir pour moi est vraiment une belle action.11Des pauvres, vous en aurez toujours autour de vous; mais moi, vous ne m’aurez pas toujours avec vous.12Si elle a répandu cette myrrhe sur moi, c’est pour préparer mon enterrement.13Vraiment, je vous l’assure, dans le monde entier, partout où cette Bonne Nouvelle qu’est l’Evangile sera annoncée, on racontera aussi, en souvenir d’elle, ce qu’elle vient de faire.
La trahison
14Alors, l’un des Douze, celui qui s’appelait Judas Iscariot, se rendit auprès des chefs des prêtres (Mc 14:10; Lc 22:3)15pour leur demander: Si je me charge de vous livrer Jésus, quelle somme me donnerez-vous? Ils lui versèrent trente pièces d’argent.16A partir de ce moment-là, il chercha une occasion favorable pour leur livrer Jésus.
Jésus célèbre la Pâque avec ses disciples
17Le premier jour de la fête des Pains sans levain, les disciples vinrent trouver Jésus pour lui demander: Où veux-tu que nous fassions les préparatifs pour le repas de la Pâque? (Mc 14:12; Lc 22:7)18Il leur répondit: Allez à la ville, chez un tel, et parlez-lui ainsi: « Le Maître te fait dire: Mon heure est arrivée. C’est chez toi que je prendrai le repas de la Pâque avec mes disciples. »19Les disciples se conformèrent aux ordres de Jésus et préparèrent le repas de la Pâque.,; (Mc 14:17; Lc 22:14; Lc 22:21; Jn 13:21)20Le soir, Jésus se mit à table avec les Douze et,21pendant qu’ils mangeaient, il dit: Vraiment, je vous l’assure: l’un de vous me trahira.22Les disciples en furent consternés. Ils se mirent, l’un après l’autre, à lui demander: Seigneur, ce n’est pas moi, n’est-ce pas?23En réponse, il leur dit: C’est un qui a trempé son pain dans le plat avec moi, lui, il me trahira.24Certes, le Fils de l’homme s’en va conformément à ce que les Ecritures annoncent à son sujet. Mais malheur à celui qui le trahit! Il aurait mieux valu pour lui n’être jamais né!25A son tour, Judas, qui le trahissait, lui demanda: Maître, ce n’est pas moi, n’est-ce pas? – Tu le dis toi-même, lui répondit Jésus. voir (Mc 14:22; Lc 22:15; 1Co 11:23)26Au cours du repas, Jésus prit du pain puis, après avoir prononcé la prière de reconnaissance, il le partagea en morceaux, puis il les donna à ses disciples, en disant: Prenez, mangez, ceci est mon corps.27Ensuite il prit une coupe et, après avoir remercié Dieu, il la leur donna en disant: Buvez-en tous;28ceci est mon sang, par lequel est scellée l’alliance. Il va être versé pour beaucoup d’hommes, afin que leurs péchés soient pardonnés.29Je vous le déclare: désormais, je ne boirai plus du fruit de la vigne jusqu’au jour où je boirai le vin nouveau avec vous dans le royaume de mon Père.
Jésus annonce le reniement de Pierre
30Après cela, ils chantèrent les psaumes de la Pâque[2]. Ensuite, ils sortirent pour se rendre au mont des Oliviers. (Ps 113:1; Mc 14:26; Lc 22:33; Jn 13:37)31Jésus leur dit alors: Cette nuit, ce qui m’arrivera vous ébranlera tous dans votre foi. En effet, il est écrit: Je frapperai le berger, et les brebis du troupeau seront dispersées[3]. (Za 13:7)32Néanmoins, quand je serai ressuscité, je vous précéderai en Galilée.33Pierre prit la parole et lui dit: Même si tous les autres sont ébranlés à cause de ce qui t’arrivera, moi je ne le serai pas!34Jésus reprit: Vraiment, je te l’assure: cette nuit même, avant que le coq ait chanté, tu m’auras renié trois fois.35Pierre réaffirma: Même s’il me fallait mourir avec toi, je ne te renierai pas. Et tous les disciples dirent la même chose.
Sur le mont des Oliviers
36Là-dessus, Jésus arriva avec eux en un lieu appelé Gethsémané. Il dit à ses disciples: Asseyez-vous ici pendant que je vais prier là-bas. (Mc 14:32; Lc 22:39)37Il prit avec lui Pierre et les deux fils de Zébédée. Il commença à être envahi d’une profonde tristesse, et l’angoisse le saisit.38Alors il leur dit: Je suis accablé de tristesse, à en mourir. Restez ici et veillez avec moi!39Puis il fit quelques pas, se laissa tomber la face contre terre, et pria ainsi: O Père, si tu le veux, écarte de moi cette coupe[4]! Toutefois, que les choses se passent, non pas comme moi je le veux, mais comme toi tu le veux. (Is 51:17; Is 51:22; Jr 25:15; Ap 15:7)40Ensuite, il revint auprès des disciples et les trouva endormis. Il dit à Pierre: Ainsi, vous n’avez pas été capables de veiller une seule heure avec moi!41Veillez et priez, pour ne pas céder à la tentation[5]. L’esprit de l’homme est plein de bonne volonté, mais la nature humaine est bien faible.42Puis il s’éloigna une deuxième fois, et se remit à prier en disant: O mon Père, s’il n’est pas possible que cette coupe me soit épargnée, s’il faut que je la boive, alors, que ta volonté soit faite.43Il revint encore vers ses disciples et les trouva de nouveau endormis, car ils avaient tellement sommeil qu’ils n’arrivaient pas à garder les yeux ouverts.44Il les laissa donc, et s’éloigna de nouveau. Pour la troisième fois, il pria en répétant les mêmes paroles.45Lorsqu’il revint auprès de ses disciples, il leur dit: Vous dormez encore et vous vous reposez[6]! L’heure est venue où le Fils de l’homme est livré entre les mains des pécheurs.46Levez-vous et allons-y. Car celui qui me trahit est là.
L’arrestation de Jésus
47Il n’avait pas fini de parler que Judas, l’un des Douze, survint, accompagné d’une troupe nombreuse armée d’épées et de gourdins. Cette troupe était envoyée par les chefs des prêtres et les responsables du peuple. (Mc 14:43; Lc 22:47; Jn 18:2)48Le traître avait convenu avec eux d’un signe en disant: Celui que j’embrasserai, c’est lui, saisissez-vous de lui.49Aussitôt, il se dirigea vers Jésus et lui dit: Bonsoir, Maître! Et il l’embrassa.50– Mon ami, lui dit Jésus, ce que tu es venu faire ici, fais-le! Alors les autres s’avancèrent et, mettant la main sur Jésus, ils se saisirent de lui.51A ce moment, l’un des compagnons de Jésus porta la main à son épée, la dégaina, en frappa le serviteur du grand-prêtre et lui emporta l’oreille.52Jésus lui dit: Remets ton épée à sa place, car tous ceux qui se serviront de l’épée mourront par l’épée.53Penses-tu donc que je ne pourrais pas faire appel à mon Père? A l’instant même, il enverrait des dizaines de milliers d’anges à mon secours.54Mais alors, comment les Ecritures, qui annoncent que tout doit se passer ainsi, s’accompliraient-elles?55Là-dessus, Jésus dit à la troupe: Me prenez-vous pour un bandit, pour que vous soyez venus en force avec épées et gourdins afin de vous emparer de moi? J’étais assis chaque jour dans la cour du Temple pour donner mon enseignement et vous ne m’avez pas arrêté!56Mais tout ceci est arrivé pour que les écrits des prophètes s’accomplissent. Alors tous les disciples l’abandonnèrent et prirent la fuite.
Jésus devant le Grand-Conseil
57Ceux qui avaient arrêté Jésus le conduisirent devant Caïphe, le grand-prêtre, chez qui les spécialistes de la Loi et les responsables du peuple s’étaient déjà rassemblés. (Mc 14:53; Lc 22:54; Lc 22:63; Jn 18:12; Jn 18:19)58Pierre le suivit à distance jusqu’au palais du grand-prêtre et il entra dans la cour où il s’assit au milieu des gardes pour voir comment tout cela finirait.59Les chefs des prêtres et le Grand-Conseil au complet cherchaient un faux témoignage contre Jésus pour pouvoir le condamner à mort.60Mais, bien qu’un bon nombre de faux témoins se soient présentés, ils ne parvenaient pas à trouver de motif valable. Finalement, il en vint tout de même deux61qui déclarèrent: Cet homme a dit: « Je peux démolir le temple de Dieu et le rebâtir en trois jours. »62Alors le grand-prêtre se leva et demanda à Jésus: Tu n’as rien à répondre aux témoignages qu’on vient de porter contre toi?63Jésus garda le silence. Alors le grand-prêtre reprit en disant: Je t’adjure, par le Dieu vivant, de nous déclarer si tu es le Messie, le Fils de Dieu.64Jésus lui répondit: Tu l’as dit toi-même. De plus, je vous le déclare: A partir de maintenant, vous verrez le Fils de l’homme siéger à la droite du Tout-Puissant[7] et venir en gloire sur les nuées du ciel[8]. (Ps 110:1; Da 7:13)65A ces mots, le grand-prêtre déchira ses vêtements en signe de consternation et s’écria: Il vient de prononcer des paroles blasphématoires! Qu’avons-nous encore besoin de témoins? Vous venez vous-mêmes d’entendre le blasphème.66Quel est votre verdict? Ils répondirent: Il est passible de mort.67Alors, ils lui crachèrent au visage et le frappèrent. D’autres le giflèrent68en disant: Hé, Messie, fais le prophète! Dis-nous qui vient de te frapper!
Pierre renie son Maître
69Pendant ce temps, Pierre était resté assis dehors, dans la cour intérieure. Une servante s’approcha de lui et dit: Toi aussi, tu étais avec Jésus le Galiléen. (Mc 14:66; Lc 22:56; Jn 18:15; Jn 18:25)70Mais Pierre le nia en disant devant tout le monde: Je ne vois pas ce que tu veux dire.71Comme il se dirigeait vers le porche pour sortir, une autre servante l’aperçut et dit à ceux qui étaient là: En voilà un qui était avec ce Jésus de Nazareth.72Il le nia de nouveau et il jura: Je ne connais pas cet homme!73Après un petit moment, ceux qui se tenaient dans la cour s’approchèrent de Pierre et lui dirent: C’est sûr, toi aussi, tu fais partie de ces gens! C’est évident: il suffit d’entendre ton accent!74Alors Pierre se mit à dire: Je le jure! Et que je sois maudit si ce n’est pas vrai: je ne connais pas cet homme. Et aussitôt, un coq chanta.75Alors Pierre se souvint de ce que Jésus lui avait dit: « Avant que le coq chante, tu m’auras renié trois fois. » Il se glissa dehors et se mit à pleurer amèrement.
Anschlag der Hohen Priester und Verrat des Judas – Salbung Jesu in Betanien

(Ps 31:14; Mt 12:14; Mt 27:1)5Sie sagten aber: Nicht an dem Fest, damit nicht ein Aufruhr unter dem Volk entsteht. (Mc 14:3; Lc 22:6; Jn 12:1)6Als aber Jesus in Betanien war, im Hause Simons, des Aussätzigen[2],7kam eine Frau zu ihm, die ein Alabasterfläschchen mit sehr kostbarem Salböl hatte, und goss es aus auf ⟨sein⟩ Haupt, als er zu Tisch lag. (Lc 7:37)8Als aber die Jünger es sahen, wurden sie unwillig und sprachen: Wozu diese Verschwendung?9Denn dies hätte teuer verkauft und ⟨der Erlös⟩ den Armen gegeben werden können.10Als aber Jesus es erkannte, sprach er zu ihnen: Was macht ihr der Frau Mühe? Sie hat doch ein gutes Werk an mir getan;11denn die Armen habt ihr allezeit bei euch, mich aber habt ihr nicht allezeit. (Dt 15:11)12Denn als sie dieses Salböl über meinen Leib goss, tat sie es zu meinem Begräbnis.13Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wo dieses Evangelium gepredigt werden wird in der ganzen Welt, wird auch von dem geredet werden, was sie getan hat, zu ihrem Gedächtnis. (1S 2:30; Mc 14:10; Lc 22:3)14Dann ging einer von den Zwölfen, Judas Iskariot[3] mit Namen, zu den Hohen Priestern (Mt 10:4; Jn 11:57)15und sprach: Was wollt ihr mir geben, und ich werde ihn euch überliefern? Sie aber setzten ihm dreißig Silberlinge fest. (Mt 27:3; 1Tm 6:10)16Und von da an suchte er Gelegenheit, ihn zu überliefern. (Mc 14:12; Lc 22:7)
Vorbereitung des Passahmahls
17Am ersten ⟨Tag des Festes⟩ der ungesäuerten Brote aber traten die Jünger zu Jesus und sprachen: Wo willst du, dass wir dir das Passah⟨mahl⟩ zu essen bereiten? (Ex 12:11; Ex 12:18; Lv 23:5; Nb 28:16; Dt 16:2)18Er aber sprach: Geht in die Stadt zu dem und dem und sprecht zu ihm: Der Lehrer sagt: Meine Zeit ist nahe; bei dir halte ich das Passah mit meinen Jüngern. (Mt 21:3)19Und die Jünger taten, wie Jesus ihnen befohlen hatte, und bereiteten das Passah. (Mc 14:17; Lc 22:14; Jn 13:18)
Bezeichnung des Verräters
20Als es aber Abend geworden war, legte er sich mit den Zwölfen zu Tisch.21Und während sie aßen, sprach er: Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer von euch wird mich überliefern. (Jn 6:70)22Und sie wurden sehr betrübt, und jeder von ihnen fing an, zu ihm zu sagen: Ich bin es doch nicht, Herr?23Er aber antwortete und sprach: Der mit mir die Hand in die Schüssel eintaucht, der wird mich überliefern.24Der Sohn des Menschen geht zwar dahin, wie über ihn geschrieben steht. Wehe aber jenem Menschen, durch den der Sohn des Menschen überliefert wird! Es wäre jenem Menschen gut, wenn er nicht geboren wäre. (Is 53:7; Da 9:26; Mt 18:7; Mt 26:54; Lc 18:31; 1P 1:11)25Judas aber, der ihn überlieferte, antwortete und sprach: Ich bin es doch nicht, Rabbi[4]? Er spricht zu ihm: Du hast es gesagt. (Mc 14:22; Lc 22:15; 1Co 11:23)
Einsetzung des Herrenmahls
26Während sie aber aßen, nahm Jesus Brot und segnete, brach und gab es den Jüngern und sprach: Nehmt, esst, dies ist mein Leib! (Mt 14:19)27Und er nahm einen Kelch und dankte und gab ihnen ⟨den⟩ und sprach: Trinkt alle daraus!28Denn dies ist mein Blut des Bundes, das für viele vergossen wird zur Vergebung der Sünden. (Ex 24:8; Jr 31:31; Za 9:11; Mt 20:28; Ep 1:7; He 9:22; He 10:16)29Ich sage euch aber, dass ich von nun an nicht mehr von diesem Gewächs des Weinstocks trinken werde bis zu jenem Tag, da ich es neu mit euch trinken werde in dem Reich[5] meines Vaters.30Und als sie ein Loblied[6] gesungen hatten, gingen sie hinaus zum Ölberg. Ankündigung der Verleugnung durch Petrus
31Darauf spricht Jesus zu ihnen: Ihr werdet alle in dieser Nacht an mir Anstoß nehmen[7]; denn es steht geschrieben: »Ich werde den Hirten schlagen, und die Schafe der Herde werden zerstreut werden.« (Za 13:7; Mt 11:6; Mt 26:56; Jn 16:32)32Nachdem ich aber auferweckt sein werde, werde ich euch voran nach Galiläa gehen. (Mt 28:7)33Petrus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Wenn alle an dir Anstoß nehmen werden, ich werde niemals Anstoß nehmen[8].34Jesus sprach zu ihm: Wahrlich, ich sage dir, dass du in dieser Nacht, ehe der Hahn kräht, mich dreimal verleugnen wirst. (Mt 26:75)35Petrus spricht zu ihm: Selbst wenn ich mit dir sterben müsste, werde ich dich nicht verleugnen. Ebenso sprachen auch alle Jünger. (Mc 14:32; Lc 22:39; Jn 11:16)
Gethsemane
36Dann kommt Jesus mit ihnen an ein Gut[9], genannt Gethsemane, und er spricht zu den Jüngern: Setzt euch hier, bis ich hingegangen bin und dort gebetet habe! (Jn 18:1)37Und er nahm den Petrus und die zwei Söhne des Zebedäus mit und fing an, betrübt und geängstigt zu werden. (Mt 17:1)38Dann spricht er zu ihnen: Meine Seele ist sehr betrübt, bis zum Tod. Bleibt hier und wacht mit mir! (Ps 88:4; Lc 12:50)39Und er ging ein wenig weiter und fiel auf sein Angesicht und betete und sprach: Mein Vater, wenn es möglich ist, so gehe dieser Kelch an mir vorüber! Doch nicht wie ich will, sondern wie du ⟨willst⟩. (Mt 20:22; Jn 4:34; Ph 2:8)40Und er kommt zu den Jüngern und findet sie schlafend; und er spricht zu Petrus: Also nicht eine Stunde konntet ihr mit mir wachen? (Ps 69:21)41Wacht und betet, damit ihr nicht in Versuchung kommt! Der Geist zwar ist willig, das Fleisch aber schwach. (Lc 18:1; Rm 7:18; Ep 6:18; 1P 5:8)42Wiederum, zum zweiten Mal, ging er hin und betete und sprach: Mein Vater, wenn dieser ⟨Kelch⟩ nicht vorübergehen kann, ohne dass ich ihn trinke, so geschehe dein Wille! (Mt 6:10; Jn 18:11)43Und als er kam, fand er sie wieder schlafend, denn ihre Augen waren beschwert. (Lc 9:32)44Und er ließ sie, ging wieder hin, betete zum dritten Mal und sprach wieder dasselbe Wort. (2Co 12:8)45Dann kommt er zu den Jüngern und spricht zu ihnen: So schlaft denn fort und ruht aus! Siehe, die Stunde ist nahe gekommen, und der Sohn des Menschen wird in Sünderhände überliefert. (Mt 17:22; Jn 12:23)46Steht auf, lasst uns gehen! Siehe, nahe ist gekommen, der mich überliefert. (Ps 119:150; Mc 14:43; Lc 22:47; Jn 18:2; Jn 18:3)
Gefangennahme
47Und während er noch redete, siehe, da kam Judas, einer der Zwölf, und mit ihm eine große Menge mit Schwertern und Stöcken, von den Hohen Priestern und Ältesten des Volkes.48Der ihn aber überlieferte, hatte ihnen ein Zeichen gegeben und gesagt: Wen ich küssen werde, der ist es, den ergreift!49Und sogleich trat er zu Jesus und sprach: Sei gegrüßt, Rabbi[10]!, und küsste ihn[11]. (2S 20:9; Ps 55:22)50Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Freund, wozu bist du gekommen? Dann traten sie heran und legten die Hände an Jesus und ergriffen ihn.51Und siehe, einer von denen, die mit Jesus waren, streckte die Hand aus, zog sein Schwert und schlug den Knecht[12] des Hohen Priesters und hieb ihm das Ohr ab.52Da spricht Jesus zu ihm: Stecke dein Schwert wieder an seinen Ort! Denn alle, die das Schwert nehmen, werden durchs Schwert umkommen. (Gn 9:6; Ap 13:10)53Oder meinst du, dass ich nicht meinen Vater bitten könne und er mir jetzt mehr als zwölf Legionen Engel stellen werde?54Wie sollten denn die Schriften erfüllt werden, dass es so geschehen muss? (Mt 26:24)55In jener Stunde sprach Jesus zu den Volksmengen: Seid ihr ausgezogen wie gegen einen Räuber mit Schwertern und Stöcken, mich zu fangen? Täglich saß ich bei euch im Tempel und lehrte, und ihr habt mich nicht gegriffen. (Lc 19:47)56Aber dies alles ist geschehen, damit die Schriften der Propheten erfüllt wurden. Da verließen ihn die Jünger alle und flohen. (Ps 88:19; Mt 26:31; Mt 27:9; Mc 14:53; Lc 22:54; Jn 18:13)
Vor dem Hohen Rat
57Die aber Jesus gegriffen hatten, führten ihn weg zu Kaiphas, dem Hohen Priester, wo die Schriftgelehrten und die Ältesten versammelt waren.58Petrus aber folgte ihm von Weitem bis zu dem Hof des Hohen Priesters und ging hinein und setzte sich zu den Dienern, um den Ausgang zu sehen.59Die Hohen Priester aber und der ganze Hohe Rat[13] suchten falsches Zeugnis gegen Jesus, um ihn zu Tode zu bringen; (Ac 6:11)60und sie fanden keins, obwohl viele falsche Zeugen herzutraten. Zuletzt aber traten zwei falsche Zeugen herbei (Dt 19:15; Ps 27:12)61und sprachen: Dieser sagte: Ich kann den Tempel Gottes abbrechen und in drei Tagen ihn wieder aufbauen. (Mt 27:40; Jn 2:19)62Und der Hohe Priester stand auf und sprach zu ihm: Antwortest du nichts? Was zeugen diese gegen dich?63Jesus aber schwieg. Und der Hohe Priester sagte zu ihm: Ich beschwöre dich bei dem lebendigen Gott, dass du uns sagst, ob du der Christus bist, der Sohn Gottes! (Ps 38:14; Is 53:7; Mt 27:12; Lc 23:9; Jn 5:18; Jn 19:9)64Jesus spricht zu ihm: Du hast es gesagt. Doch ich sage euch: Von nun an werdet ihr den Sohn des Menschen sitzen sehen zur Rechten der Macht und kommen auf den Wolken des Himmels. (Mt 16:27; Mc 16:19; Lc 21:27; He 1:3; Ap 1:7)65Da zerriss der Hohe Priester seine Kleider und sprach: Er hat gelästert. Was brauchen wir noch Zeugen? Siehe, jetzt habt ihr die Lästerung gehört. (Lv 21:10; Mt 9:3; Mc 2:7; Jn 10:33)66Was meint ihr? Sie aber antworteten und sprachen: Er ist des Todes schuldig. (Lv 24:16; Mt 20:18)67Dann spien sie ihm ins Angesicht und schlugen ihn mit Fäusten; einige aber schlugen ⟨ihn ins Gesicht⟩ (Ps 69:8; Is 50:6; Is 53:7; Mt 27:30; Mc 10:34)68und sprachen: Weissage uns, Christus, wer ist es, der dich schlug? (Mc 14:66; Lc 22:56; Jn 18:15)
Verleugnung durch Petrus
69Petrus aber saß draußen im Hof; und es trat eine Magd zu ihm und sprach: Auch du warst mit Jesus, dem Galiläer. (Mt 21:11)70Er aber leugnete vor allen und sprach: Ich weiß nicht, was du sagst.71Als er aber in das Torgebäude hinausgegangen war, sah ihn eine andere; und sie spricht zu denen, die dort waren: Auch dieser war mit Jesus, dem Nazoräer[14]. (Mt 2:22)72Und wieder leugnete er mit einem Eid: Ich kenne den Menschen nicht!73Kurz nachher aber traten die Umstehenden herbei und sprachen zu Petrus: Wahrhaftig, auch du bist ⟨einer⟩ von ihnen, denn auch deine Sprache verrät dich.74Da fing er an zu fluchen und zu schwören: Ich kenne den Menschen nicht! Und gleich darauf krähte der Hahn.75Und Petrus erinnerte sich an das Wort Jesu, der gesagt hatte: Ehe der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen. Und er ging hinaus und weinte bitterlich. (Mt 26:34; Mc 15:1; Lc 22:66; Lc 23:1; Jn 18:28)
1Jesus finished saying all these things. Then he said to his disciples,2‘As you know, the Passover Feast is two days away. The Son of Man will be handed over to be nailed to a cross.’3Then the chief priests met with the elders of the people. They met in the palace of Caiaphas, the high priest.4They made plans to arrest Jesus secretly. They wanted to kill him.5‘But not during the feast,’ they said. ‘The people may stir up trouble.’
A woman pours perfume on Jesus
6Jesus was in Bethany. He was in the home of Simon, who had a skin disease.7A woman came to Jesus with a special sealed jar of very expensive perfume. She poured the perfume on his head while he was at the table.8When the disciples saw this, they became angry. ‘Why this waste?’ they asked.9‘The perfume could have been sold at a high price. The money could have been given to poor people.’10Jesus was aware of this. So he said to them, ‘Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.11You will always have poor people with you. But you will not always have me.12She poured the perfume on my body to prepare me to be buried.13What I’m about to tell you is true. What she has done will be told anywhere this good news is preached all over the world. It will be told in memory of her.’
Judas agrees to hand Jesus over
14One of the 12 disciples went to the chief priests. His name was Judas Iscariot.15He asked, ‘What will you give me if I hand Jesus over to you?’ So they counted out 30 silver coins for him.16From then on, Judas watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them.
The Lord’s Supper
17It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The disciples came to Jesus. They asked, ‘Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?’18He replied, ‘Go into the city to a certain man. Tell him, “The Teacher says, ‘My time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover at your house with my disciples.’ ” ’19So the disciples did what Jesus had told them to do. They prepared the Passover meal.20When evening came, Jesus was at the table with his 12 disciples.21While they were eating, he said, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you will hand me over to my enemies.’22The disciples became very sad. One after the other, they began to say to him, ‘Surely you don’t mean me, Lord, do you?’23Jesus replied, ‘The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will hand me over.24The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.’25Judas was the one who was going to hand him over. He said, ‘Surely you don’t mean me, Teacher, do you?’ Jesus answered, ‘You have said so.’26While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, ‘Take this and eat it. This is my body.’27Then he took a cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. He said, ‘All of you drink from it.28This is my blood of the covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of many people.29Here is what I tell you. From now on, I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it with you in my Father’s kingdom.’30Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus says that the disciples will turn away
31Jesus told them, ‘This very night you will all turn away because of me. It is written that the Lord said, ‘ “I will strike the shepherd down. Then the sheep of the flock will be scattered.” (Za 13:7)32But after I rise from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.’33Peter replied, ‘All the others may turn away because of you. But I never will.’34‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ Jesus answered. ‘It will happen tonight. Before the cockerel crows, you will say three times that you don’t know me.’35But Peter said, ‘I may have to die with you. But I will never say I don’t know you.’ And all the other disciples said the same thing.
Jesus prays in Gethsemane
36Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.’37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him. He began to be sad and troubled.38Then he said to them, ‘My soul is very sad. I feel close to death. Stay here. Keep watch with me.’39He went a little further. Then he fell with his face to the ground. He prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.’40Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?’ he asked Peter.41‘Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.’42Jesus went away a second time. He prayed, ‘My Father, is it possible for this cup to be taken away? But if I must drink it, may what you want be done.’43Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open.44So he left them and went away once more. For the third time he prayed the same thing.45Then he returned to the disciples. He said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Look! The hour has come. The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners.46Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!’
Jesus is arrested
47While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived. He was one of the 12 disciples. A large crowd was with him. They were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests and the elders of the people had sent them.48Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, had arranged a signal with them. ‘The one I kiss is the man,’ he said. ‘Arrest him.’49So Judas went to Jesus at once. He said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ And he kissed him.50Jesus replied, ‘Friend, do what you came to do.’ Then the men stepped forward. They grabbed Jesus and arrested him.51At that moment, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword. He pulled it out and struck the slave of the high priest with it. He cut off the slave’s ear.52‘Put your sword back in its place,’ Jesus said to him. ‘All who use the sword will die by the sword.53Do you think I can’t ask my Father for help? He would send an army of more than 70,000 angels right away.54But then how would the Scriptures come true? They say it must happen in this way.’55At that time Jesus spoke to the crowd. ‘Am I leading a band of armed men against you?’ he asked. ‘Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courtyard teaching. And you didn’t arrest me.56But all this has happened so that the words of the prophets would come true.’ Then all the disciples left him and ran away.
Jesus is taken to the Sanhedrin
57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest. The teachers of the law and the elders had come together there.58Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see what would happen.59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for something to use against Jesus. They wanted to put him to death.60But they did not find any proof, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two other witnesses came forward.61They said, ‘This fellow claimed, “I am able to destroy the temple of God. I can build it again in three days.” ’62Then the high priest stood up. He asked Jesus, ‘Aren’t you going to answer? What are these charges that these men are bringing against you?’63But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, ‘I am commanding you in the name of the living God. May he judge you if you don’t tell the truth. Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.’64‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied. ‘But here is what I say to all of you. From now on, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.’65Then the high priest tore his clothes. He said, ‘He has spoken a very evil thing against God! Why do we need any more witnesses? You have heard him say this evil thing.66What do you think?’ ‘He must die!’ they answered.67Then they spat in his face. They hit him with their fists. Others slapped him.68They said, ‘Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who hit you?’
Peter says he does not know Jesus
69Peter was sitting out in the courtyard. A female servant came to him. ‘You also were with Jesus of Galilee,’ she said.70But in front of all of them, Peter said he was not. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about,’ he said.71Then he went out to the gate leading into the courtyard. There another servant saw him. She said to the people, ‘This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.’72Again he said he was not. With a curse he said, ‘I don’t know the man!’73After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter. ‘You must be one of them,’ they said. ‘The way you talk gives you away.’74Then Peter began to curse and said to them, ‘I don’t know the man!’ Right away a cockerel crowed.75Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said. ‘The cockerel will crow,’ Jesus had told him. ‘Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.’ Peter went outside. He broke down and cried.
