31 But these are written that you may believe[1] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. 

New International Reader’s Version

31 But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. If you believe this, you will have life because you belong to him. 

King James Version

31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
