20 When Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They have gone over the brook[1] of water.” And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 

New International Version

20 When Absalom’s men came to the woman at the house, they asked, ‘Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?’ The woman answered them, ‘They crossed over the brook.’[1] The men searched but found no-one, so they returned to Jerusalem. 

New International Reader’s Version

20 Absalom’s men came to the house. They asked the woman, ‘Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?’ She answered, ‘They went across the brook.’ When the men looked around, they didn’t find anyone. So they returned to Jerusalem. 

King James Version

20 And when Absalom' servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them , they returned to Jerusalem.
