1 不要為明天誇口，因為你不知明天會怎樣。 2 讓別人誇獎你，不要開口自誇；讓外人稱讚你，不要自吹自擂。 3 石頭沉，沙土重，不如愚人惹的麻煩重。 4 暴怒固然殘酷，憤恨好比狂瀾，然而嫉妒更是無人能敵。 5 開誠佈公的責備勝過隱藏的愛。 6 朋友加的創傷出自真誠，仇敵連連親吻卻是多餘。 7 飽足的人連蜂蜜也嫌棄，饑餓的人吃苦食也甘甜。 8 離鄉背井的人就像離巢的飛鳥。 9 膏油和香料使人暢快，朋友的勸誡更加甘甜。 10 不可拋棄你的朋友和父親的至交。患難時別投靠兄弟，近鄰勝過遠親。 11 孩子啊，你要做智者，使我的心喜樂，我好回答譏笑我的人。 12 明哲人遇禍躲避，愚昧人前去受害。 13 誰為陌生人作保，就拿誰的衣服；誰為淫婦作保，誰就得交抵押。 14 清早高聲為鄰舍祝福，無異於咒詛他。 15 喋喋不休的婦人，就像雨天房屋漏個不停； 16 想制止她猶如制止狂風，又像用手抓油一樣困難。 17 朋友互相切磋，如鐵磨鐵越磨越利。 18 看無花果樹的吃無花果，照顧主人的也必得尊榮。 19 水能映照人的面貌，心能反映人的本相。 20 陰間和死亡填不滿，人的眼目永不滿足。 21 鼎煉銀，爐煉金，讚美也考驗人。 22 就算把愚人放在臼裡與麥子一起搗碎，他仍然難脫愚昧。 23 你要瞭解你的羊群，小心照料你的牲畜。 24 因為錢財有用盡時，冠冕不能萬代長存。 25 乾草割去，嫩草長出，山間的野草都被收起來。 26 小羊的皮毛可做衣服，賣山羊的錢可買田地， 27 母山羊的奶足夠你和家人喝，也夠養活你的僕婢。

1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. 2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips. 3 A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty, but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both. 4 Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy? 5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love. 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy. 7 One who is full loathes honey, but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet. 8 Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who strays from his home. 9 Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.* 10 Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend, and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away. 11 Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him who reproaches me. 12 The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it. 13 Take a man’s garment when he has put up security for a stranger, and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for an adulteress.* 14 Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, will be counted as cursing. 15 A continual dripping on a rainy day and a quarrelsome wife are alike; 16 to restrain her is to restrain the wind or to grasp* oil in one’s right hand. 17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.* 18 Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who guards his master will be honored. 19 As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man. 20 Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, and never satisfied are the eyes of man. 21 The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise. 22 Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, yet his folly will not depart from him. 23 Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, 24 for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations? 25 When the grass is gone and the new growth appears and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered, 26 the lambs will provide your clothing, and the goats the price of a field. 27 There will be enough goats’ milk for your food, for the food of your household and maintenance for your girls.
