1 İsrailliler Şittim'de yaşarken, erkekleri Moavlı kadınlarla zina etmeye başladı. 2 Bu kadınlar kendi ilahlarına kurban sunarken İsrailliler'i de çağırdılar. İsrail halkı yiyeceklerden yedi ve onların ilahlarına taptı. 3 Böylece Baal-Peor'a bağlandılar. RAB bu yüzden onlara öfkelendi. 4 Musa'ya, ‹‹Bu halkın bütün önderlerini gündüz benim önümde öldür›› dedi, ‹‹Öyle ki, İsrail halkına öfkem yatışsın.›› 5 Bunun üzerine Musa İsrail yargıçlarına, ‹‹Her biriniz kendi adamlarınız arasında Baal-Peor'a bağlanmış olanları öldürün›› dedi. 6 O sırada İsrailli bir adam geldi, Musa'nın ve Buluşma Çadırı'nın girişinde ağlayan İsrail topluluğunun gözü önünde kardeşine Midyanlı bir kadın getirdi. 7 Bunu gören Kâhin Harun oğlu Elazar oğlu Pinehas topluluktan ayrılıp eline bir mızrak aldı. 8 İsrailli'nin ardına düşerek çadıra girdi ve mızrağı ikisine birden sapladı. Mızrak hem İsrailli'nin, hem de Midyanlı kadının karnını delip geçti. Böylece İsrail'i yok eden hastalık dindi. 9 Hastalıktan ölenlerin sayısı 24 000 kişiydi. 10 RAB Musa'ya şöyle dedi: 11 ‹‹Kâhin Harun oğlu Elazar oğlu Pinehas İsrail halkına öfkemin dinmesine neden oldu. Çünkü o, aralarında benim adıma büyük kıskançlık duydu. Bu yüzden onları kıskançlıktan büsbütün yok etmedim. 12 Ona de ki, ‹Onunla bir esenlik antlaşması yapacağım. 13 Kendisi ve soyundan gelenler için kalıcı bir kâhinlik antlaşması olacak bu. Çünkü o Tanrısı için kıskançlık duydu ve İsrail halkının günahlarını bağışlattı.› ›› 14 Midyanlı kadınla birlikte öldürülen İsrailli, Şimonoğulları'nın bir aile başıydı ve adı Salu oğlu Zimri'ydi. 15 Öldürülen kadın ise Midyanlı bir aile başı olan Sur'un kızı Kozbi'ydi. 16-17 RAB Musa'ya, ‹‹Midyanlılar'ı düşman say ve yok et›› dedi, 18 ‹‹Çünkü Peor olayında ve bunun sonucunda ölümcül hastalık çıktığı gün öldürülen kızkardeşleri Midyanlı önderin kızı Kozbi olayında kurdukları tuzaklarla sizi aldatarak düşmanca davrandılar.››

1 While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. (Say 31:16; Say 33:49; Yşu 2:1; Yşu 3:1; Mik 6:5) 2 These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. (Çık 34:15; Yşu 22:17; Mez 106:28; Hoş 9:10; 1 Ko 10:20) 3 So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. 4 And the Lord said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people and hang[1] them in the sun before the Lord, that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.” (Say 25:11; Yas 4:3; Yas 13:17; Yas 21:23; 2 Sa 21:6; Gal 3:13) 5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor.” (Çık 18:21; Çık 18:25; Çık 32:27; Say 11:16) 6 And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. (Yoe 2:17) 7 When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand (Çık 6:25; Mez 106:30) 8 and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. 9 Nevertheless, those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand. (Yas 4:3; 1 Ko 10:8) 10 And the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy. (Çık 20:5; Yas 32:16; Yas 32:21; 1 Kr 14:22; Mez 78:58; Sef 1:18; Sef 3:8; 1 Ko 10:22; 2 Ko 11:2) 12 Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace, (Mal 2:4) 13 and it shall be to him and to his descendants after him the covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel.’” (Çık 40:15; 1 Ta 6:4) 14 The name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of a father’s house belonging to the Simeonites. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was the tribal head of a father’s house in Midian. (Say 31:8; Yşu 13:21) 16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 17 “Harass the Midianites and strike them down, (Say 31:2; Say 31:7) 18 for they have harassed you with their wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the chief of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague on account of Peor.” (Say 23:28; Say 31:16; Va 2:14)
