1Als sich inzwischen das Volk zu Tausenden gesammelt hatte, sodass sie aufeinander traten, begann er zuerst zu seinen Jüngern zu sprechen: Hütet euch vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer, welcher die Heuchelei ist! (2Mo 12,15; 2Mo 12,19; Mt 16,6; Mt 16,12; Mt 23,3; 1Kor 5,6)2Es ist aber nichts verdeckt, das nicht aufgedeckt werden wird, und nichts verborgen, das nicht bekannt werden wird. (Pred 12,14; Lk 8,17; Röm 2,16; 1Kor 4,5; 1Tim 5,24)3Alles, was ihr im Finstern redet, wird man darum im Licht hören, und was ihr in den Kammern ins Ohr gesprochen habt, wird auf den Dächern verkündigt werden. (Mt 10,27; 2Kor 4,2)4Ich sage aber euch, meinen Freunden: Fürchtet euch nicht vor denen, die den Leib töten und danach nichts Weiteres tun können. (Jes 51,12; Joh 15,14; 1Petr 3,14)5Ich will euch aber zeigen, wen ihr fürchten sollt: Fürchtet den, welcher, nachdem er getötet hat, auch Macht besitzt, in die Hölle zu werfen! Ja, ich sage euch, den fürchtet! (Jes 8,13; Mt 25,41; Hebr 12,29)6Verkauft man nicht fünf Sperlinge um zwei Groschen? Und nicht ein Einziger von ihnen ist vor Gott vergessen. (Hi 38,41; Ps 104,27; Mt 10,29)7Aber auch die Haare eures Hauptes sind alle gezählt. Darum fürchtet euch nicht! Ihr seid mehr wert als viele Sperlinge. (Ps 8,5)8Ich sage euch aber: Jeder, der sich zu mir bekennen wird vor den Menschen, zu dem wird sich auch der Sohn des Menschen bekennen vor den Engeln Gottes; (1Sam 2,30; Ps 119,46; Mt 10,32; Röm 1,16; 2Tim 1,8)9wer mich aber verleugnet hat vor den Menschen, der wird verleugnet werden vor den Engeln Gottes. (Mt 10,33; Lk 9,26)10Und jedem, der ein Wort reden wird gegen den Sohn des Menschen, dem wird vergeben werden; wer aber gegen den Heiligen Geist lästert, dem wird nicht vergeben werden. (Mt 12,32; 1Tim 1,13; Hebr 6,4)11Wenn sie euch aber vor die Synagogen und vor die Fürsten und Obrigkeiten führen, so sorgt nicht, wie oder womit ihr euch verteidigen oder was ihr sagen sollt; (Mk 13,11; Lk 21,12; Apg 4,8)12denn der Heilige Geist wird euch in derselben Stunde lehren, was ihr sagen sollt. (2Mo 4,11; Lk 21,15; Apg 6,10)
Das Gleichnis vom reichen Narren
13Es sprach aber einer aus der Volksmenge zu ihm: Meister, sage meinem Bruder, dass er das Erbe mit mir teilen soll!14Er aber sprach zu ihm: Mensch, wer hat mich zum Richter oder Erbteiler über euch gesetzt?15Er sagte aber zu ihnen: Habt acht und hütet euch vor der Habsucht! Denn niemandes Leben hängt von dem Überfluss ab, den er an Gütern hat. (Ps 49,7; Ps 119,36; Mt 4,4; 1Tim 6,7; Hebr 13,5)16Und er sagte ihnen ein Gleichnis und sprach: Das Feld eines reichen Mannes hatte viel Frucht getragen. (1Mo 26,12; 1Mo 41,47; Ps 73,3; Ps 73,12)17Und er überlegte bei sich selbst und sprach: Was soll ich tun, da ich keinen Platz habe, wo ich meine Früchte aufspeichern kann? (Jes 58,7; Röm 12,13; 1Tim 6,17)18Und er sprach: Das will ich tun: Ich will meine Scheunen abbrechen und größere bauen und will darin alles, was mir gewachsen ist, und meine Güter aufspeichern (5Mo 14,22; Pred 5,18; 1Kor 4,7; Jak 4,13)19und will zu meiner Seele sagen: Seele, du hast einen großen Vorrat auf viele Jahre; habe nun Ruhe, iss, trink und sei guten Mutes! (Ps 62,11; Pred 12,1; Mt 6,19; Phil 3,18; Jak 5,5)20Aber Gott sprach zu ihm: Du Narr! In dieser Nacht wird man deine Seele von dir fordern; und wem wird gehören, was du bereitet hast? (Hi 27,8; Ps 39,7; Pred 4,8; Jer 17,11; 1Thess 5,3)21So geht es dem, der für sich selbst Schätze sammelt und nicht reich ist für Gott! (Lk 12,33; 1Tim 6,18)
Von unnützen Sorgen
22Und er sprach zu seinen Jüngern: Darum sage ich euch: Sorgt euch nicht um euer Leben, was ihr essen sollt, noch um den Leib, was ihr anziehen sollt. (Phil 4,6; 1Petr 5,7)23Das Leben ist mehr als die Speise und der Leib mehr als die Kleidung. (1Mo 19,17)24Betrachtet die Raben! Sie säen nicht und ernten nicht, sie haben weder Speicher noch Scheunen, und Gott nährt sie doch. Wie viel mehr seid ihr wert als die Vögel! (Hi 38,41; Ps 147,9; Mt 12,12; Lk 12,7)25Wer aber von euch kann durch sein Sorgen zu seiner Lebenslänge eine einzige Elle hinzusetzen? (Ps 39,6; Pred 8,8)26Wenn ihr nun nicht einmal das Geringste vermögt, was sorgt ihr euch um das Übrige? (Pred 7,13; Lk 12,29; 1Petr 5,7)27Betrachtet die Lilien, wie sie wachsen! Sie mühen sich nicht und spinnen nicht; ich sage euch aber: Selbst Salomo in all seiner Herrlichkeit ist nicht gekleidet gewesen wie eine von ihnen! (1Kön 10,1)28Wenn aber Gott das Gras auf dem Feld, das heute steht und morgen in den Ofen geworfen wird, so kleidet, wie viel mehr euch, ihr Kleingläubigen! (Jes 40,6; Mt 8,26; Mt 14,31; 1Petr 1,24)29Und ihr sollt auch nicht danach trachten, was ihr essen oder was ihr trinken sollt; und beunruhigt euch nicht! (1Kor 7,32)30Denn nach all diesem trachten die Heidenvölker der Welt; euer Vater aber weiß, dass ihr diese Dinge benötigt. (Mt 6,8; Mt 6,22; Mt 6,33)31Trachtet vielmehr nach dem Reich Gottes, so wird euch dies alles hinzugefügt werden! (1Kön 3,13; Mt 13,44; Joh 6,27; Röm 8,32)32Fürchte dich nicht, du kleine Herde; denn es hat eurem Vater gefallen, euch das Reich zu geben. (Jes 41,14; Mt 25,34; 1Kor 1,26; Jak 2,5; 2Petr 1,11; Offb 2,10)33Verkauft eure Habe und gebt Almosen! Macht euch Beutel, die nicht veralten, einen Schatz, der nicht vergeht, im Himmel, wo kein Dieb hinkommt und keine Motte ihr Zerstörungswerk treibt. (Mt 6,20; Lk 18,22; Apg 2,45; Apg 4,34; 1Tim 6,19)34Denn wo euer Schatz ist, da wird auch euer Herz sein. (Phil 3,20; Hebr 11,14)
Ermahnung zur Wachsamkeit
35Eure Lenden sollen umgürtet sein und eure Lichter brennend; (2Mo 12,11; Mt 25,4; 1Petr 1,13)36und seid Menschen gleich, die ihren Herrn erwarten, wenn er von der Hochzeit aufbrechen wird, damit, wenn er kommt und anklopft, sie ihm sogleich auftun. (Mk 13,35)37Glückselig sind jene Knechte, welche der Herr, wenn er kommt, wachend finden wird! Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Er wird sich schürzen[1] und sie zu Tisch führen und hinzutreten und sie bedienen. (Mt 24,46; Lk 21,36; Joh 12,26; Offb 7,17; Offb 16,15)38Und wenn er in der zweiten Nachtwache kommt oder in der dritten Nachtwache kommt und sie so findet, glückselig sind jene Knechte! (Mt 14,25)39Das aber erkennt: Wenn der Hausherr wüsste, zu welcher Stunde der Dieb käme, so würde er wachen und nicht in sein Haus einbrechen lassen. (1Thess 5,2; Offb 3,3)40Darum seid auch ihr bereit! Denn der Sohn des Menschen kommt zu einer Stunde, da ihr es nicht meint. (Mt 24,42; Mt 25,13)41Da sprach Petrus zu ihm: Herr, sagst du dieses Gleichnis für uns oder auch für alle?42Der Herr aber sprach: Wer ist wohl der treue und kluge Haushalter[2], den der Herr über seine Dienerschaft setzen wird, damit er ihnen zur rechten Zeit die verordnete Speise gibt? (Apg 20,28; 1Kor 4,2; 1Petr 4,10)43Glückselig ist jener Knecht, den sein Herr, wenn er kommt, bei solchem Tun finden wird! (Lk 12,37)44Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Er wird ihn über alle seine Güter setzen. (Mt 25,21)45Wenn aber jener Knecht in seinem Herzen spricht: Mein Herr säumt zu kommen! und anfängt, die Knechte und die Mägde zu schlagen, auch zu essen und zu trinken und sich zu berauschen (Pred 8,11; Lk 20,10; Lk 21,34; 2Petr 3,3)46so wird der Herr jenes Knechtes an einem Tag kommen, da er es nicht erwartet, und zu einer Stunde, die er nicht kennt, und wird ihn entzweihauen und ihm sein Teil mit den Ungläubigen geben. (Offb 2,16; Offb 21,8)47Der Knecht aber, der den Willen seines Herrn kannte und sich nicht bereithielt und auch nicht nach seinem Willen tat, wird viele Schläge erleiden müssen; (Jak 4,17)48wer ihn aber nicht kannte und doch tat, was Schläge verdient, der wird wenig Schläge erleiden müssen. Denn wem viel gegeben ist, bei dem wird man viel suchen; und wem viel anvertraut ist, von dem wird man desto mehr fordern. (Mt 11,22; Mt 25,15; Joh 15,22; Röm 2,12; Hebr 2,2)
Das Bekenntnis zu Christus bringt Trennung
49Ich bin gekommen, ein Feuer auf die Erde zu bringen, und wie wünschte ich, es wäre schon entzündet! (Jes 10,17; Mt 3,11; Mk 9,49)50Aber ich muss mich taufen lassen mit einer Taufe, und wie drängt es mich, bis sie vollbracht ist! (Mk 10,38)51Meint ihr, dass ich gekommen sei, Frieden auf Erden zu geben? Nein, sage ich euch, sondern vielmehr Entzweiung! (Lk 2,14; Lk 2,34; Apg 14,2)52Denn von nun an werden fünf in einem Haus entzweit sein, drei mit zweien und zwei mit dreien; (Ps 41,8; Joh 7,43; Apg 28,24)53der Vater wird mit dem Sohn entzweit sein und der Sohn mit dem Vater, die Mutter mit der Tochter und die Tochter mit der Mutter, die Schwiegermutter mit ihrer Schwiegertochter und die Schwiegertochter mit ihrer Schwiegermutter. (Mi 7,5; Sach 13,3; Mt 10,21)
Zeichen der Zeit. Ermahnung zu Versöhnlichkeit
54Er sprach aber auch zu der Volksmenge: Wenn ihr das Gewölk aufsteigen seht vom Westen her, so sagt ihr sofort: Es gibt Regen!, und es geschieht auch so. (1Kön 18,44)55Und wenn der Südwind weht, so sagt ihr: Es wird heiß!, und es geschieht auch so. (Ps 78,26; Hl 4,16; Apg 27,13; Apg 28,13)56Ihr Heuchler, das Aussehen der Erde und des Himmels könnt ihr beurteilen; wie kommt es aber, dass ihr diese Zeit nicht beurteilt? (Lk 19,42; Lk 20,1; Joh 12,37)57Und warum entscheidet ihr nicht von euch selbst aus, was recht ist? (Röm 2,14)58Denn wenn du mit deinem Widersacher zur Obrigkeit gehst, so gib dir auf dem Weg Mühe, von ihm loszukommen, damit er dich nicht vor den Richter schleppt und der Richter dich dem Gerichtsdiener übergibt und der Gerichtsdiener dich ins Gefängnis wirft. (Mt 5,25)59Ich sage dir: Du wirst von dort nicht herauskommen, bis du auch den letzten Groschen bezahlt hast! (Mt 5,26)
1Inzwischen drängten und schoben sich die Menschen zu Tausenden. Jesus wandte sich an seine Jünger und warnte sie: »Hütet euch vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer – hütet euch vor ihrer Heuchelei. (Mt 16,6)2Es kommt die Zeit, da wird alles offenbar werden; alles, was jetzt noch geheim ist, wird dann öffentlich bekannt gemacht werden. (Mk 4,22)3Alles, was ihr im Dunkeln gesagt habt, wird im Hellen zu hören sein, und was ihr hinter verschlossenen Türen geflüstert habt, wird man von den Dächern rufen, sodass alle es hören!4Meine Freunde, habt keine Angst vor denen, die euch töten wollen. Sie können nur den Körper töten; mehr können sie euch nicht antun. (Joh 15,14)5Aber ich sage euch, wen ihr wirklich fürchten sollt: Fürchtet Gott, der die Macht hat, Menschen zu töten und sie danach in die Hölle zu werfen. (Hebr 10,31)6Was kosten fünf Spatzen? Vielleicht ein paar Cent? Und doch vergisst Gott nicht einen einzigen von ihnen.7Und auch die Haare auf eurem Kopf sind alle gezählt. Habt deshalb keine Angst, denn ihr seid ihm wertvoller als ein ganzer Schwarm Spatzen.8Und ich versichere euch: Wer sich hier auf der Erde zu mir bekennt, zu dem wird sich der Menschensohn auch in der Gegenwart der Engel Gottes bekennen. (Lk 15,10; Offb 3,5)9Aber wer mich hier auf der Erde verleugnet, der wird auch vor den Engeln Gottes verleugnet werden. (Mk 8,38; Lk 9,26; 2Tim 2,12)10Dennoch kann dem, der schlecht über den Menschensohn spricht, vergeben werden; aber dem, der gegen den Heiligen Geist lästert, wird niemals vergeben werden. (Mt 12,31; Mk 3,28; 1Joh 5,16)11Und wenn man euch in den Synagogen und vor Herrschern und Beamten den Prozess machen wird, dann macht euch keine Sorgen darüber, was ihr zu eurer Verteidigung vorbringen sollt. (Mt 10,19; Mk 13,11; Lk 21,12)12Denn in diesem Moment wird der Heilige Geist euch lehren, was ihr sagen sollt.«
Das Gleichnis vom reichen Bauern
13Da rief einer aus der Menge: »Meister, sag doch meinem Bruder, dass er das väterliche Erbe mit mir teilen soll.«14Jesus erwiderte: »Wer hat mich zum Richter über euch gemacht, um in solchen Dingen zu entscheiden?« (2Mo 2,14; Apg 7,27)15Und er fuhr fort: »Nehmt euch in Acht! Begehrt nicht das, was ihr nicht habt. Das wahre Leben wird nicht daran gemessen, wie viel wir besitzen.« (Hi 20,20; Hi 31,24; Ps 62,11; 1Tim 6,9)16Und er gab ihnen folgendes Gleichnis: »Ein wohlhabender Mann besaß einen großen Hof mit Äckern, die reiche Ernten brachten,17so viel, dass seine Scheunen die Erträge nicht fassen konnten.18Da sagte er sich: ›Ich weiß, was ich mache! Ich werde meine Scheunen abreißen und größere bauen. Auf diese Weise habe ich genug Platz, um alles zu lagern.19Und dann werde ich mich zurücklehnen und mir sagen: Mein Freund, du hast für Jahre genug eingelagert. Genieße das Leben. Iss, trink und sei fröhlich!‹ (Spr 27,1; 1Kor 15,32; Jak 5,1)20Aber Gott sagte zu ihm: ›Wie dumm von dir! Du wirst noch heute Nacht sterben. Und wer wird dann das alles bekommen?‹ (Hi 27,8; Ps 39,7)21Ihr seht, wie dumm es ist, auf der Erde Reichtümer anzuhäufen und dabei nicht nach Reichtum bei Gott zu fragen.«
Lehre über Geld und Besitz
22Darauf wandte Jesus sich wieder an seine Jünger: »Deshalb sage ich euch: Sorgt euch nicht um Alltägliches – ob ihr genug zu essen oder anzuziehen habt,23denn das Leben besteht aus weit mehr als Nahrung und Kleidung.24Seht die Raben an. Sie brauchen nicht zu säen, zu ernten oder Vorratsscheunen zu bauen, denn Gott ernährt sie. Und ihr seid ihm doch weit wichtiger als irgendwelche Vögel! (Hi 38,41; Ps 147,9)25Können all eure Sorgen euer Leben auch nur um einen einzigen Augenblick verlängern? Natürlich nicht!26Und wenn euer Sorgen schon in so geringen Dingen nichts bewirkt, was nützt es da, sich um größere Dinge zu sorgen?27Seht doch die Lilien, wie sie wachsen. Sie arbeiten nicht und nähen sich keine Kleider, und doch war Salomo in all seiner Pracht nicht so schön gekleidet wie eine von ihnen. (1Kön 10,1)28Wenn Gott schon für die Blumen so wunderbar sorgt, die heute blühen und morgen bereits verwelkt sind, wie viel mehr wird er da für euch sorgen? Euer Glaube ist so klein!29Macht euch keine Gedanken über eure Nahrung – was ihr essen oder trinken sollt. Macht euch keine Gedanken darüber, ob Gott euch damit versorgen wird.30Diese Dinge beherrschen das Denken der meisten Menschen, doch euer Vater weiß, was ihr braucht. (Mt 6,8)31Er wird euch jeden Tag alles Nötige geben, wenn das Reich Gottes für euch das Wichtigste ist.32Hab also keine Angst, kleine Herde. Denn es macht eurem Vater große Freude, euch das Reich Gottes zu schenken. (Lk 22,29)33Verkauft, was ihr habt, und gebt es den Bedürftigen. Auf diese Weise sammelt ihr euch Schätze im Himmel! Und die Geldbörsen des Himmels haben keine Löcher. Dort ist euer Schatz sicher – kein Dieb kann ihn stehlen und keine Motte ihn zerfressen. (Mt 19,21; Apg 2,45)34Wo immer euer Reichtum ist, da wird auch euer Herz sein.
Seid bereit für das Kommen des Herrn
35Haltet euch bereit und seid wach (2Mo 12,1; Mt 25,1; Mk 13,33)36wie jemand, der auf die Rückkehr seines Herrn vom Hochzeitsfest wartet. Dann werdet ihr die Tür öffnen und ihn sofort hereinlassen können, wenn er kommt und anklopft.37Glücklich sind diejenigen, die vorbereitet sind und seine Rückkehr erwarten. Ich verspreche euch, er wird sie Platz nehmen lassen, sich eine Schürze umbinden und sie bedienen, während sie sitzen und essen! (Lk 17,7; Joh 13,4)38Vielleicht kommt er mitten in der Nacht oder kurz vor der Morgendämmerung[1]. Doch wann er auch kommt: Glücklich sind all diejenigen von seinen Dienern, die dann bereit sind!39Eines solltet ihr wissen: Wenn ein Hausbesitzer wüsste, wann der Einbrecher kommt, würde er nicht zulassen, dass er einbricht. (1Thess 5,2; Offb 16,15)40Deshalb müsst ihr jederzeit bereit sein, denn der Menschensohn wird dann kommen, wenn ihr es am wenigsten erwartet.« (Mk 13,33)41Petrus fragte: »Herr, meinst du damit nur uns oder alle Menschen?«42Da erwiderte der Herr: »Ich spreche von jedem treuen, umsichtigen Diener, dem der Herr die Verantwortung überträgt, sein Haus zu verwalten und seine Familie zu versorgen.43Glücklich dran ist der Diener, wenn der Herr zurückkommt und feststellt, dass er seine Sache gut gemacht hat.44Ich versichere euch: Der Herr wird diesem Diener die Verantwortung über seinen gesamten Besitz übertragen.45Wenn der Diener jedoch denkt: ›Mein Herr wird noch lange nicht zurückkommen‹ und anfängt, die anderen Diener herumzukommandieren, Feste zu feiern und sich zu betrinken –46nun, dann wird der Herr eines Tages unangekündigt und zu unerwarteter Stunde zurückkehren. Dann wird er den Diener davonjagen und ihn zu den Ungläubigen verbannen.47Der Diener wird hart bestraft werden, denn er hat seine Pflichten nicht erfüllt, obwohl er den Willen seines Herrn kannte. (5Mo 25,2; Jak 4,17)48Menschen, die diesen Willen nicht kennen und unrecht tun, werden nur leicht bestraft werden. Von den Menschen jedoch, denen viel anvertraut wurde, wird viel verlangt, und von denjenigen, denen noch mehr anvertraut wurde, wird auch noch viel mehr verlangt werden. (3Mo 5,17; 4Mo 15,27)
Rechtzeitig Entscheidungen treffen
49Ich bin gekommen, um Feuer auf der Erde zu entzünden, und ich wünschte, meine Aufgabe wäre schon erfüllt!50Eine schreckliche Taufe steht mir bevor, und der Gedanke daran lastet schwer auf mir, bis sie vollzogen ist. (Mk 10,38)51Glaubt ihr, ich bin gekommen, um der Welt Frieden zu bringen? Nein, ich bin gekommen, um Zwietracht zu säen!52Von nun an werden ganze Familien auseinanderbrechen, weil drei für mich und zwei gegen mich sind – oder umgekehrt.53Es wird zu Streit zwischen Vater und Sohn, Mutter und Tochter, Schwiegermutter und Schwiegertochter kommen.« (Mi 7,6)54Daraufhin wandte Jesus sich an die Menge und sagte: »Wenn ihr seht, wie sich im Westen Wolken bilden, sagt ihr: ›Es wird Regen geben.‹ Und ihr habt recht. (Mt 16,2)55Wenn ein Südwind weht, sagt ihr: ›Heute wird es heiß werden.‹ Und genau so ist es.56Ihr Heuchler! Die Erscheinungen der Erde und des Himmels versteht ihr zu deuten, aber die Zeichen dieser Zeit könnt ihr nicht deuten.57Warum könnt ihr nicht selbst entscheiden, was richtig ist?58Wenn du auf dem Weg zum Gericht bist und deinen Ankläger triffst, versuche doch, die Angelegenheit zu bereinigen, bevor sie vor den Richter kommt, sonst wirst du womöglich verurteilt, dem Gerichtsdiener übergeben und ins Gefängnis geworfen.59Und wenn das geschieht, wirst du nicht eher freikommen, bis du auch den letzten Cent bezahlt hast.«

Have No Fear
4“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. (Jes 8,12; Jes 51,12; Jer 1,8; 1Petr 3,14)5But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[1] Yes, I tell you, fear him! (Jak 4,12)6Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[2] And not one of them is forgotten before God. (Ps 50,11)7Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. (1Sam 14,45; Mt 6,26; Mt 12,12)
13Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” (Lk 11,27)14But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” (2Mo 2,14; Mi 6,8; Apg 7,27; Röm 2,1; Röm 2,3; Röm 9,20)15And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (1Tim 6,6; Hebr 13,5)16And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, (Ps 49,16)17and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ (Pred 5,10)18And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. (Lk 12,24)19And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ (Spr 27,1; Pred 2,24; Pred 11,9; Lk 15,23; 1Kor 15,32; Jak 4,13)20But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ (Hi 27,8; Hi 27,17; Ps 39,6; Pred 2,18; Pred 2,21; Jer 17,11; Mt 16,26; Lk 12,19)21So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Mt 6,19)
Do Not Be Anxious
22And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. (Mt 6,25; Mt 10,19; Mt 13,22; Lk 10,41; Lk 12,11; 1Kor 7,32; Phil 4,6; 1Petr 5,7)23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.24Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! (Hi 38,41; Ps 147,9; Lk 12,7)25And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[3] (Lk 2,52)26If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,[4] yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (1Kön 10,4)28But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! (Mt 8,26; Mt 14,31; Mt 16,8; Lk 17,6)29And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. (Jak 1,6)30For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. (Mt 6,8)31Instead, seek his[5] kingdom, and these things will be added to you. (1Kön 3,11; Mt 5,6; Mt 5,20; Mk 10,29; Lk 11,2; 1Tim 4,8; 1Petr 3,9)32“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (Jes 40,11; Jes 41,14; Jes 44,2; Mt 11,26; Mt 13,19; Mt 26,31; Lk 10,21; Lk 22,29; Joh 10,16; Joh 21,15; Apg 20,28; Eph 1,5; Eph 1,9; Phil 2,13; 1Petr 5,2)33Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. (Mt 6,20; Mt 19,21; Lk 11,41; Lk 12,21; Lk 16,9; 1Petr 1,4)34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Mt 6,21)
You Must Be Ready
35“Stay dressed for action[6] and keep your lamps burning, (Mt 25,7; Eph 6,14; 1Petr 1,13)36and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. (2Petr 3,12; Offb 3,20)37Blessed are those servants[7] whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. (Mt 24,42; Mt 24,46; Lk 12,35; Lk 17,8; Lk 22,27; Joh 13,4)38If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants!39But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he[8] would not have left his house to be broken into. (Mt 24,43; 1Thess 5,2; 2Petr 3,10; Offb 3,3)40You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Mt 25,10; Lk 12,47; Lk 21,27)41Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” (Mk 13,37)42And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? (Mt 24,45; Lk 16,1)43Blessed is that servant[9] whom his master will find so doing when he comes. (Joh 13,17; Offb 16,15)44Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. (Mt 25,21; Mt 25,23)45But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, (Mt 25,5; 1Thess 5,7; Hebr 10,37; 2Petr 3,4; 2Petr 3,9)46the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. (Lk 12,40; 2Petr 3,12)47And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. (5Mo 25,2; Mt 11,24; Lk 12,40; Joh 15,22; Joh 15,24; Jak 4,17; 2Petr 2,21)48But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. (3Mo 5,17; 4Mo 15,29; Mt 13,12; Mt 25,29; Röm 1,19; Röm 2,14; 1Tim 1,13)
Not Peace, but Division
49“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! (Mt 3,11)50I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! (Mk 10,38; 2Kor 5,14)51Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. (Mt 10,34; Offb 6,4)52For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three.53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” (Mi 7,6; Mt 10,21)
Interpreting the Time
54He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. (1Kön 18,43; Mt 16,2)55And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. (Mt 20,12; Lk 12,54)56You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? (Mt 16,3)
Settle with Your Accuser
57“And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? (Lk 21,30; Joh 7,24; 1Kor 11,13)58As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. (Spr 25,8; Mt 5,25)59I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”[10] (Mt 18,34; Mk 12,42; Lk 21,2)
1During that time a crowd of many thousands had gathered. There were so many people that they were stepping on one another. Jesus spoke first to his disciples. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees,’ he said. ‘They just pretend to be godly.2Everything that is secret will be brought out into the open. Everything that is hidden will be uncovered.3What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight. What you have whispered to someone behind closed doors will be shouted from the rooftops.4‘My friends, listen to me. Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body but can’t do any more than that.5I will show you whom you should be afraid of. Be afraid of the one who has the authority to throw you into hell after you have been killed. Yes, I tell you, be afraid of him.6Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? But God does not forget even one of them.7In fact, he even counts every hair on your head! So don’t be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.8‘What about someone who says in front of others that he knows me? I tell you, the Son of Man will say in front of God’s angels that he knows that person.9But what about someone who says in front of others that he doesn’t know me? I, the Son of Man, will say in front of God’s angels that I don’t know him.10Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But anyone who speaks evil things against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.11‘You will be brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities. But do not worry about how to stand up for yourselves or what to say.12The Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.’
The story of the rich fool
13Someone in the crowd spoke to Jesus. ‘Teacher’, he said, ‘tell my brother to divide the family property with me.’14Jesus replied, ‘Friend, who made me a judge or umpire between you?’15Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against wanting to have more and more things. Life is not made up of how much a person has.’16Then Jesus told them a story. He said, ‘A certain rich man’s land produced a very large crop.17He thought to himself, “What should I do? I don’t have any place to store my crops.”18‘Then he said, “This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones. I will store my extra corn in them.19I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of corn stored away for many years. Take life easy. Eat, drink and have a good time.’ ”20‘But God said to him, “You foolish man! Tonight I will take your life away from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?”21‘That is how it will be for whoever stores things away for themselves but is not rich in the sight of God.’
Do not worry
22Then Jesus spoke to his disciples. He said, ‘I tell you, do not worry. Don’t worry about your life and what you will eat. And don’t worry about your body and what you will wear.23There is more to life than eating. There are more important things for the body than clothes.24Think about the ravens. They don’t plant or gather crops. They don’t have any barns at all. But God feeds them. You are worth much more than birds!25Can you add even one hour to your life by worrying?26You can’t do that very little thing. So why worry about the rest?27‘Think about how the wild flowers grow. They don’t work or make clothing. But here is what I tell you. Not even Solomon in his royal robes was dressed like one of those flowers.28If that is how God dresses the wild grass, how much better will he dress you! After all, the grass is here only today. Tomorrow it is thrown into the fire. Your faith is so small!29Don’t spend time thinking about what you will eat or drink. Don’t worry about it.30People who are ungodly run after all those things. Your Father knows that you need them.31But put God’s kingdom first. Then those other things will also be given to you.32‘Little flock, do not be afraid. Your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.33Sell what you own. Give to those who are poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out. Store up riches in heaven that will never be used up. There, no thief can come near it. There, no moth can destroy it.34Your heart will be where your riches are.
Be ready
35‘Be dressed and ready to serve. Keep your lamps burning.36Be like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding dinner. When he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.37It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready when he comes. What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will then dress himself so he can serve them. He will let them take their places at the table. And he will come and wait on them.38It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready. It will even be good if he comes in the middle of the night or towards morning.39But here is what you must understand. Suppose the owner of the house knew at what hour the robber was coming. He would not have let his house be broken into.40You also must be ready. The Son of Man will come at an hour when you don’t expect him.’41Peter asked, ‘Lord, are you telling this story to us, or to everyone?’42The Lord answered, ‘Suppose a master puts one of his servants in charge of his other servants. The servant’s job is to give them the food they are to receive at the right time. The master wants a faithful and wise manager for this.43It will be good for the servant if the master finds him doing his job when the master returns.44What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will put that servant in charge of everything he owns.45But suppose the servant says to himself, “My master is taking a long time to come back.” Suppose that servant begins to beat the other servants, both men and women. Suppose he feeds himself. And suppose he drinks until he gets drunk.46The master of that servant will come back on a day the servant doesn’t expect him. The master will return at an hour the servant doesn’t know. Then the master will cut him to pieces. He will send the servant to the place where unbelievers go.47‘Suppose a servant knows the master’s wishes. But the servant doesn’t get ready and doesn’t do what the master wants. Then that servant will receive a heavy beating.48But suppose the servant does not know his master’s wishes. And suppose the servant does things for which he should be punished. He will receive a lighter beating. Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. Even more will be asked of the person who is supposed to take care of much.
Jesus will separate people from one another
49‘I have come to bring fire on the earth. How I wish the fire had already started!50But I have a baptism of suffering to go through. And I must go through it.51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you. I have come to separate people.52From now on there will be five members in a family, each one against the other. There will be three against two and two against three.53They will be separated. Father will turn against son and son against father. Mother will turn against daughter and daughter against mother. Mother-in-law will turn against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’
Understanding the meaning of what is happening
54Jesus spoke to the crowd. He said, ‘You see a cloud rising in the west. Right away you say, “It’s going to rain.” And it does.55The south wind blows. So you say, “It’s going to be hot.” And it is.56You pretenders! You know how to understand the appearance of the earth and the sky. Why can’t you understand the meaning of what is happening right now?57‘Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?58Suppose someone has a claim against you, and you are on your way to court. Try hard to settle the matter on the way. If you don’t, that person may drag you off to the judge. The judge may turn you over to the officer. And the officer may throw you into prison.59I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny!’
