Die Umkehr des Volkes

1 Während nun Esra so betete und sein Bekenntnis ablegte, weinend und hingestreckt vor dem Haus Gottes, versammelte sich zu ihm aus Israel eine sehr große Versammlung von Männern, Frauen und Kindern; denn das Volk weinte sehr. (Jos 7,6; Ri 2,4; 1Sam 7,6; 2Chr 20,9; Neh 8,9; Ps 51,19; Dan 9,3; Dan 9,20)

2 Und Schechanja, der Sohn Jechiels, von den Söhnen Elams, ergriff das Wort und sprach zu Esra: Wir haben unserem Gott die Treue gebrochen, dass wir fremde Frauen aus den Völkern des Landes heimgeführt haben. 3 Lasst uns nun einen Bund schließen mit unserem Gott, dass wir alle Frauen und die von ihnen geboren sind, hinaustun nach dem Ratschluss des Herrn und derer, die das Gebot unseres Gottes fürchten; und es soll nach dem Gesetz gehandelt werden. (5Mo 7,2; 2Chr 34,31; Esr 9,6; Neh 10,29; Jes 8,20)

4 Steh auf, denn du musst handeln in dieser Sache! Wir wollen dir beistehen; führe es mutig aus! (1Chr 28,20; Esr 7,23; Mk 13,34; 1Kor 16,13)

5 Da stand Esra auf, und er nahm einen Eid von den Obersten der Priester, der Leviten und ganz Israels, dass sie nach diesem Wort handeln wollten. Und sie schworen. (Neh 5,12; Neh 13,25) 6 Und Esra stand auf von [dem Platz] vor dem Haus Gottes und ging in die Kammer Johanans, des Sohnes Eljaschibs. Er ging dort hinein und aß kein Brot und trank kein Wasser; denn er trug Leid wegen des Treuebruchs derer, die weggeführt gewesen waren. (5Mo 9,18; Esr 9,4; Jes 22,12; Dan 9,3)

7 Und man ließ in Juda und Jerusalem an alle Kinder der Wegführung einen Ruf ergehen, dass sie sich nach Jerusalem versammeln sollten. (2Chr 30,5; Esr 1,1) 8 Wer aber binnen drei Tagen gemäß dem Rat der Obersten und Ältesten nicht kommen würde, dessen ganze Habe sollte mit dem Bann belegt und er selbst aus der Gemeinde der Weggeführten ausgeschlossen werden. 9 Da versammelten sich alle Männer von Juda und Benjamin in Jerusalem auf den dritten Tag, das war der zwanzigste Tag des neunten Monats. Und das ganze Volk saß auf dem Platz vor dem Haus Gottes, zitternd um der Sache willen und wegen des strömenden Regens. (1Sam 12,17; Esr 10,13; Jer 10,13; Jer 36,22; Sach 7,1)

10 Und Esra, der Priester, stand auf und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr habt eine Treulosigkeit begangen und habt fremde Frauen heimgeführt, womit ihr die Schuld Israels noch größer gemacht habt! (4Mo 32,13; Esr 9,6; Esr 9,14; Mt 23,31)

(Esr 10,3; Neh 13,30) 13 Aber das Volk ist zahlreich, und es ist Regenzeit, sodass man nicht hier draußen stehen kann; und es ist auch nicht ein Werk von einem oder zwei Tagen, denn wir haben in dieser Sache viel gesündigt. 14 Lasst doch unsere Obersten für die ganze Gemeinde einstehen; und alle aus unseren Städten, die fremde Frauen heimgeführt haben, sollen zu bestimmten Zeiten kommen, und mit ihnen die Ältesten jeder Stadt und deren Richter, bis der glühende Zorn unseres Gottes, [der auf uns ist,] solange diese Sache währt, von uns abgewandt wird! 15 Nur Jonathan, der Sohn Asahels, und Jahseja, der Sohn Tikwas, standen dagegen auf, und Meschullam und Sabbetai, der Levit, unterstützten sie. 1 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore. 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. 3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. 4 Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it . 5 Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware. 6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away. 7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem; 8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away. 9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain. 10 And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. 11 Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives. 12 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do. 13 But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing. 14 Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us. 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter : and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. 16 And the children of the captivity did so.
