1 Und als Jethro, der Priester von Midian, Moses Schwiegervater, alles hörte, was Gott an Mose und an seinem Volk Israel getan hatte, wie der HERR Israel aus Ägypten geführt hatte, (2Mo 2,16; 2Mo 3,1) 2 da nahm Jethro, Moses Schwiegervater, die Zippora, die Frau Moses, die er zurückgesandt hatte, (2Mo 2,21; 2Mo 4,25) 3 und ihre zwei Söhne (der Name des einen war Gersom; denn er sprach: »Ich bin ein Fremdling in einem fremden Land geworden«; (2Mo 2,22) 4 und der Name des anderen Elieser; denn »der Gott meines Vaters ist meine Hilfe gewesen und hat mich von dem Schwert des Pharao errettet«); (5Mo 33,29; 1Chr 23,15; Ps 90,1) 5 und Jethro, Moses Schwiegervater, und seine Söhne und seine Frau kamen zu Mose in die Wüste, als er sich an dem Berg Gottes gelagert hatte. (2Mo 3,1; 2Mo 3,12; 2Mo 24,13; 1Kön 19,8) 6 Und er ließ Mose sagen: Ich, Jethro, dein Schwiegervater, bin zu dir gekommen, und deine Frau und ihre beiden Söhne mit ihr. (2Mo 18,2) 7 Da ging Mose hinaus, seinem Schwiegervater entgegen, und beugte sich nieder vor ihm und küsste ihn. Und als sie einander gegrüßt hatten, gingen sie in das Zelt. (1Mo 33,4; 1Mo 43,28; 1Mo 45,15; 2Mo 18,2) 8 Da erzählte Mose seinem Schwiegervater alles, was der HERR dem Pharao und den Ägyptern um Israels willen getan hatte, und alle Mühsal, die ihnen auf dem Weg begegnet war, und wie der HERR sie errettet hatte. (Ps 81,7; Ps 106,8; Jes 63,7) 9 Jethro aber freute sich über alles Gute, das der HERR an Israel getan hatte, und dass er sie errettet hatte aus der Hand der Ägypter. (Jes 44,23; Apg 11,23; Röm 12,15; 1Kor 12,26) 10 Und Jethro sprach: Gelobt sei der HERR, der euch errettet hat aus der Hand der Ägypter und aus der Hand des Pharao, ja, der sein Volk aus der Gewalt der Ägypter errettet hat! (2Sam 18,28; Ps 72,18; Lk 1,68) 11 Nun weiß ich, dass der HERR größer ist als alle Götter; denn in der Sache, worin sie in Vermessenheit handelten, ist er über sie gekommen! (2Mo 5,2; 2Mo 7,1; 2Mo 8,19; 2Mo 12,29; 2Mo 12,33; Neh 9,9; Hi 4,8; Ps 96,3) 12 Und Jethro, Moses Schwiegervater, nahm Brandopfer und Schlachtopfer, um Gott zu opfern. Da kamen Aaron und alle Ältesten von Israel, um mit Moses Schwiegervater ein Mahl zu halten vor dem Angesicht Gottes. (1Mo 31,54; 5Mo 12,7; 1Chr 29,22) 



13 Und es geschah am folgenden Tag, da setzte sich Mose, um das Volk zu richten; und das Volk stand um Mose her vom Morgen bis zum Abend. (2Chr 19,6; Jes 16,5; Mt 23,1) 14 Als aber Moses Schwiegervater alles sah, was er mit dem Volk tat, sprach er: Was tust du denn mit dem Volk? Warum sitzt du allein und das ganze Volk steht um dich her vom Morgen bis zum Abend? (2Mo 18,8) 15 Mose antwortete seinem Schwiegervater: Das Volk kommt zu mir, um Gott zu befragen. (3Mo 24,12; 4Mo 15,34) 16 Denn wenn sie eine Rechtssache haben, kommen sie zu mir, dass ich entscheide, wer von beiden recht hat, und damit ich ihnen Gottes Ordnungen und seine Gesetze verkünde. (2Mo 24,14; 5Mo 17,9; 2Chr 19,10; Mal 2,7) 17 Aber Moses Schwiegervater sprach zu ihm: Es ist nicht gut, was du tust! (2Mo 18,13) 18 Du wirst müde und kraftlos, sowohl du als auch das Volk, das bei dir ist; denn diese Sache ist zu schwer für dich, du kannst sie allein nicht ausrichten. (4Mo 11,14; 5Mo 1,9) 19 So höre auf meine Stimme; ich will dir raten, und Gott wird mit dir sein. Tritt du für das Volk vor Gott, und bringe du ihre Anliegen vor Gott, (5Mo 5,27; Rut 2,4) 20 und erkläre ihnen die Ordnungen und Gesetze, dass du ihnen den Weg verkündest, auf dem sie wandeln, und die Werke, die sie tun sollen. (5Mo 4,1; 5Mo 4,5; Neh 8,1) 21 Sieh dich aber unter dem ganzen Volk nach tüchtigen Männern um, die Gott fürchten, Männer der Wahrheit, die dem ungerechten Gewinn feind sind; die setze über sie als Oberste über tausend, über hundert, über fünfzig und über zehn, (1Mo 47,6; 5Mo 1,13; 2Chr 19,5; 2Chr 19,7; Ps 101,6; Spr 1,1; Spr 2,3; Apg 6,3; 2Tim 2,2; Hebr 13,21; 1Petr 4,10) 22 damit sie dem Volk allezeit Recht sprechen! Alle wichtigen Sachen aber sollen sie vor dich bringen, und alle geringen Sachen sollen sie selbst richten; so wird es dir leichter werden, wenn sie die Bürde mit dir tragen. (4Mo 11,17; 4Mo 15,33; 4Mo 27,1) 23 Wenn du das tun wirst, und wenn es dir Gott gebietet, so wirst du bestehen können; und dann wird auch dieses ganze Volk in Frieden an seinen Ort kommen! 24 Da folgte Mose der Stimme seines Schwiegervaters und tat alles, was er sagte. (Spr 9,9) 25 Und Mose erwählte tüchtige Männer aus ganz Israel und machte sie zu Häuptern über das Volk, zu Obersten über tausend, über hundert, über fünfzig und über zehn, (2Mo 18,21) 26 damit sie dem Volk allezeit Recht sprechen sollten; die schweren Sachen brachten sie vor Mose, die geringen Sachen aber richteten sie selbst. (2Mo 18,22; 5Mo 17,8; 1Kön 3,16; 1Kön 3,28; Hi 29,16) 27 Darauf ließ Mose seinen Schwiegervater ziehen, und er kehrte in sein Land zurück. (4Mo 10,30)

1 Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. (2Mo 2,16; 2Mo 2,18; 2Mo 18,12) 2 Now Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, had taken Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her home, 3 along with her two sons. The name of the one was Gershom (for he said, “I have been a sojourner[1] in a foreign land”), (2Mo 2,22; 2Mo 4,20; Ps 39,12; Apg 7,29; Hebr 11,13) 4 and the name of the other, Eliezer[2] (for he said, “The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”). 5 Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness where he was encamped at the mountain of God. (2Mo 3,1) 6 And when he sent word to Moses, “I,[3] your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her,” 7 Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. And they asked each other of their welfare and went into the tent. (1Mo 14,17; 1Mo 18,2; 1Mo 19,1; 1Mo 29,13; 1Mo 33,4; 2Sam 19,39; 1Kön 2,19) 8 Then Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them in the way, and how the Lord had delivered them. (Neh 9,9; Ps 78,12; Ps 78,42; Ps 106,7) 9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the good that the Lord had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 Jethro said, “Blessed be the Lord, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh and has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. (1Mo 14,20; 2Sam 18,28; Lk 1,68) 11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods, because in this affair they dealt arrogantly with the people.”[4] (1Chr 16,25; 2Chr 2,5; Neh 9,10; Ps 95,3; Ps 97,9; Ps 119,21; Ps 135,5; Dan 4,37; Lk 1,51) 12 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God; and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God. (1Mo 31,54; 2Mo 24,11; 5Mo 12,7; 5Mo 14,26; 1Chr 29,22) 13 The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening. 14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning till evening?” 15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God; (3Mo 24,12; 4Mo 15,34) 16 when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.” (2Mo 24,14; 5Mo 4,5; 5Mo 5,1; 5Mo 17,8; 2Sam 15,2; 1Kor 6,1) 17 Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone. (4Mo 11,14; 4Mo 11,17; 5Mo 1,9; 5Mo 1,12) 19 Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God, (2Mo 4,16; 2Mo 20,19; 4Mo 27,5; 5Mo 5,5) 20 and you shall warn them about the statutes and the laws, and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do. (5Mo 1,18; Ps 143,8) 21 Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. (5Mo 1,15; 5Mo 16,18; 2Chr 19,5; Apg 6,3) 22 And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. (2Mo 18,26; 3Mo 24,11; 4Mo 11,17; 4Mo 15,33; 4Mo 27,2; 4Mo 36,1; 5Mo 1,17; 5Mo 17,8) 23 If you do this, God will direct you, you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace.” (2Mo 18,18) 24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. (5Mo 1,15) 26 And they judged the people at all times. Any hard case they brought to Moses, but any small matter they decided themselves. (2Mo 18,22) 27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went away to his own country. (4Mo 10,29)
