1L'Eternel dit à Josué:2«Parle en ces termes aux Israélites: ‘Etablissez-vous, comme je vous l'ai ordonné par l'intermédiaire de Moïse, des villes de refuge:3l'auteur d'un homicide, celui qui aura tué quelqu'un involontairement, sans en avoir l'intention, pourra s'y enfuir. Elles vous serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang.4L'auteur de l'homicide s'enfuira vers l'une de ces villes, s'arrêtera à l'entrée de la ville et exposera son cas aux anciens de cette ville. Ils l'accueilleront chez eux dans la ville et lui donneront un endroit où habiter avec eux.5Si le vengeur du sang le poursuit, ils ne livreront pas l'auteur de l'homicide entre ses mains, car c'est sans le vouloir qu'il a tué son prochain et sans avoir été auparavant son ennemi.6Il restera dans cette ville jusqu'à ce qu'il ait comparu devant l'assemblée pour être jugé et jusqu'à la mort du grand-prêtre alors en fonctions. A ce moment-là seulement, l'auteur de l'homicide pourra repartir et retourner dans sa ville et dans sa maison, dans la ville d'où il s'était enfui.’»7Ils consacrèrent Kédesh en Galilée, dans la région montagneuse de Nephthali, Sichem dans la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm et Kirjath-Arba, c'est-à-dire Hébron, dans la région montagneuse de Juda.8De l'autre côté du Jourdain, à l'est de Jéricho, ils choisirent Betser dans le désert, dans la plaine, dans la tribu de Ruben, Ramoth en Galaad, dans la tribu de Gad, et Golan en Basan, dans la tribu de Manassé.9Telles furent les villes désignées pour tous les Israélites et pour l'étranger en séjour parmi eux, afin que celui qui aurait tué quelqu'un involontairement puisse s'y réfugier et ne meure pas de la main du vengeur du sang avant d'avoir comparu devant l'assemblée.
1Then the Lord said to Joshua:2‘Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,3so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.4When they flee to one of these cities, they are to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state their case before the elders of that city. Then the elders are to admit the fugitive into their city and provide a place to live among them.5If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbour unintentionally and without malice aforethought.6They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled.’7So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.8East of the Jordan (on the other side from Jericho) they designated Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh.9Any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
