1L'Eternel apparut à Abraham parmi les chênes de Mamré, alors qu'il était assis à l'entrée de sa tente pendant la chaleur du jour.2Il leva les yeux et vit trois hommes debout non loin de lui. Quand il les vit, il courut depuis l'entrée de sa tente à leur rencontre et se prosterna jusqu'à terre.3Il dit: «Seigneur, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ne passe pas loin de ton serviteur.4Permettez qu'on apporte un peu d'eau pour vous laver les pieds et reposez-vous sous cet arbre.5J'irai prendre un morceau de pain pour vous restaurer, puis vous continuerez votre route, car c'est pour cela que vous passez près de votre serviteur.» Ils répondirent: «Fais comme tu l'as dit.»6Abraham s'empressa d'aller trouver Sara dans la tente et dit: «Prends vite 22 litres de fleur de farine! Pétris-la et fais des gâteaux.»7Abraham courut à son troupeau, prit un veau tendre et bon et le donna à un serviteur qui se dépêcha de le préparer.8Il prit encore du lait caillé et du lait, avec le veau qu'on avait préparé, et il les mit devant eux. Il se tint lui-même à leurs côtés, sous l'arbre, et ils mangèrent.9Puis ils lui dirent: «Où est ta femme Sara?» Il répondit: «Elle est là, dans la tente.»10L'un d'eux dit: «Je reviendrai vers toi à la même époque, et ta femme Sara aura un fils.» Sara écoutait à l'entrée de la tente, derrière lui.11Abraham et Sara étaient vieux, d'un âge avancé, et Sara ne pouvait plus espérer avoir des enfants.12Elle rit en elle-même en se disant: «Maintenant que je suis usée, aurai-je encore des désirs? Mon seigneur aussi est vieux.»13L'Eternel dit à Abraham: «Pourquoi donc Sara a-t-elle ri en se disant: ‘Est-ce que vraiment j'aurai un enfant, moi qui suis vieille?’14Y a-t-il quoi que ce soit d'étonnant de la part de l'Eternel? Au moment fixé je reviendrai vers toi, à la même époque, et Sara aura un fils[1].» (Rm 9:9)15Sara mentit en disant: «Je n'ai pas ri», car elle eut peur, mais il dit: «Au contraire, tu as ri.»
Intercession d'Abraham en faveur de Sodome
16Ces hommes se levèrent pour partir en se dirigeant du côté de Sodome. Abraham les accompagna pour les reconduire.17Alors l'Eternel dit: «Cacherai-je à Abraham ce que je vais faire?18Abraham deviendra une nation grande et puissante, et toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en lui.19En effet, je l'ai choisi afin qu'il ordonne à ses fils et à sa famille après lui de garder la voie de l'Eternel en pratiquant la droiture et la justice. Ainsi l'Eternel accomplira en faveur d'Abraham les promesses qu'il lui a faites.»20Et l'Eternel dit: «Le cri contre Sodome et Gomorrhe a augmenté, et leur péché est énorme.21C'est pourquoi je vais descendre et je verrai s'ils ont agi entièrement d'après le bruit venu jusqu'à moi. Si ce n'est pas le cas, je le saurai.»22Les hommes s'éloignèrent et allèrent vers Sodome, mais Abraham se tint encore devant l'Eternel.23Abraham s'approcha et dit: «Supprimeras-tu vraiment le juste avec le méchant?24Peut-être y a-t-il 50 justes dans la ville. Les supprimeras-tu aussi et ne pardonneras-tu pas à cette ville à cause des 50 justes qui sont au milieu d'elle?25Faire mourir le juste avec le méchant, si bien que le sort du juste serait identique à celui du méchant, cela ne correspond certainement pas à ta manière d'agir! Celui qui juge toute la terre n'appliquera-t-il pas le droit?»26L'Eternel dit: «Si je trouve à Sodome 50 justes, je pardonnerai à toute la ville à cause d'eux.»27Abraham reprit: «Voici que j'ai eu l'audace de parler au Seigneur, moi qui ne suis que poussière et cendre.28Peut-être, à ces 50 justes, en manquera-t-il 5. Pour 5, détruiras-tu toute la ville?» L'Eternel dit: «Je ne la détruirai pas si j'y trouve 45 justes.»29Abraham continua de lui parler et dit: «Peut-être s'y trouvera-t-il 40 justes.» L'Eternel dit: «Je ne lui ferai rien à cause de ces 40.»30Abraham dit: «Que le Seigneur ne s'irrite pas et je parlerai. Peut-être s'y trouvera-t-il 30 justes.» L'Eternel dit: «Je ne lui ferai rien si j'y trouve 30 justes.»31Abraham dit: «Voici que j'ai eu l'audace de parler au Seigneur. Peut-être s'y trouvera-t-il 20 justes.» L'Eternel dit: «Je ne la détruirai pas à cause de ces 20.»32Abraham dit: «Que le Seigneur ne s'irrite pas et je ne parlerai plus que cette fois. Peut-être s'y trouvera-t-il 10 justes.» L'Eternel dit: «Je ne la détruirai pas à cause de ces 10 justes.»33L'Eternel s'en alla lorsqu'il eut fini de parler à Abraham, et Abraham retourna chez lui.
1The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.2Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.3He said, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, my lord,[1] do not pass your servant by.4Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.5Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way – now that you have come to your servant.’ ‘Very well,’ they answered, ‘do as you say.’6So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. ‘Quick,’ he said, ‘get three seahs[2] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.’7Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.8He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.9‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ they asked him. ‘There, in the tent,’ he said.10Then one of them said, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.’ Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.11Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.12So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?’13Then the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, “Will I really have a child, now that I am old?”14Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.’15Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, ‘I did not laugh.’ But he said, ‘Yes, you did laugh.’
Abraham pleads for Sodom
16When the men got up to leave, they looked down towards Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way.17Then the Lord said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?18Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[3]19For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.’20Then the Lord said, ‘The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous21that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.’22The men turned away and went towards Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[4]23Then Abraham approached him and said: ‘Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?24What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[5] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?25Far be it from you to do such a thing – to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?’26The Lord said, ‘If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.’27Then Abraham spoke up again: ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,28what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?’ ‘If I find forty-five there,’ he said, ‘I will not destroy it.’29Once again he spoke to him, ‘What if only forty are found there?’ He said, ‘For the sake of forty, I will not do it.’30Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?’ He answered, ‘I will not do it if I find thirty there.’31Abraham said, ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?’ He said, ‘For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.’32Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?’ He answered, ‘For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.’33When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.
