1Lorsque Abram fut âgé de 99 ans, l'Eternel apparut à Abram et lui dit: «Je suis le Dieu tout-puissant. Marche devant moi et sois intègre.2J'établirai mon alliance entre moi et toi, et je te multiplierai considérablement.»3Abram tomba le visage contre terre, et Dieu lui dit:4«Voici quelle est mon alliance avec toi. Tu deviendras le père d'un grand nombre de nations.5On ne t'appellera plus Abram, mais ton nom sera Abraham[1], car je te rends père d'un grand nombre de nations[2].6Je te ferai beaucoup proliférer, je ferai de toi des nations et des rois seront issus de toi.7J'établirai mon alliance entre moi et toi, ainsi que tes descendants après toi, au fil des générations: ce sera une alliance perpétuelle en vertu de laquelle je serai ton Dieu et celui de ta descendance après toi.8Je te donnerai, à toi et à tes descendants après toi, le pays où tu séjournes en étranger, tout le pays de Canaan; il sera leur propriété pour toujours[3] et je serai leur Dieu.» (Ex 32:13)9Dieu dit à Abraham: «Quant à toi, tu garderas mon alliance, toi et tes descendants après toi au fil des générations.10Voici quelle est mon alliance, celle que vous garderez entre moi et vous, ainsi que ta descendance après toi: tout garçon parmi vous sera circoncis.11Vous vous circoncirez[4] et ce sera un signe d'alliance entre moi et vous.12A l'âge de 8 jours, tout garçon parmi vous sera circoncis, et ce à chacune de vos générations, qu'il soit né chez toi ou qu'il ait été acheté à un étranger, en dehors de ta descendance.13On devra circoncire celui qui est né chez toi et celui que tu as acheté. Mon alliance sera inscrite dans votre chair comme une alliance perpétuelle.14Un homme incirconcis, qui n'aura pas été circoncis dans son corps, sera exclu de son peuple: il aura violé mon alliance.»15Dieu dit à Abraham: «Quant à ta femme Saraï, tu ne l'appelleras plus Saraï, car son nom est Sara[5].16Je la bénirai et je te donnerai même un fils à travers elle. Je la bénirai et elle donnera naissance à des nations; des rois seront issus d'elle.»17Abraham tomba le visage contre terre; il rit et dit dans son cœur: «Un fils pourrait-il naître à un homme de 100 ans? Et Sara, âgée de 90 ans, pourrait-elle mettre un enfant au monde?»18Abraham dit alors à Dieu: «Si seulement Ismaël pouvait vivre devant toi!»19Dieu dit: «C'est certain, ta femme Sara te donnera un fils et tu l'appelleras Isaac. J'établirai mon alliance avec lui comme une alliance perpétuelle pour sa descendance après lui.20En ce qui concerne Ismaël, je t'ai exaucé: je le bénirai, je le ferai proliférer et je le multiplierai considérablement. Il aura pour fils douze princes et je ferai de lui une grande nation.21Cependant, mon alliance, je l'établirai avec Isaac, le fils que Sara te donnera à cette époque-ci de l'année prochaine.»22Lorsqu'il eut fini de lui parler, Dieu s'éleva au-dessus d'Abraham.23Abraham prit son fils Ismaël, ainsi que tous ceux qui étaient nés chez lui et tous ceux qu'il avait achetés, tous les hommes parmi les membres de son foyer, et il les circoncit le jour même, conformément à l'ordre que Dieu lui avait donné.24Abraham était âgé de 99 ans lorsqu'il fut circoncis.25Quant à son fils Ismaël, il était âgé de 13 ans lorsqu'il fut circoncis.26Le jour même, Abraham fut circoncis, ainsi que son fils Ismaël,27et tous les membres de son foyer, qu'ils soient nés chez lui ou aient été achetés à des étrangers, furent circoncis avec lui.
1When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty[1]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.2Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.’3Abram fell face down, and God said to him,4‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations.5No longer will you be called Abram[2]; your name will be Abraham,[3] for I have made you a father of many nations.6I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.7I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.8The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.’9Then God said to Abraham, ‘As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.10This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: every male among you shall be circumcised.11You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.12For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner – those who are not your offspring.13Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.14Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.’15God also said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.16I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.’17Abraham fell face down; he laughed and said to himself, ‘Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?’18And Abraham said to God, ‘If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!’19Then God said, ‘Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.[4] I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.20And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.21But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.’22When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.23On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.24Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,25and his son Ishmael was thirteen;26Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day.27And every male in Abraham’s household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.
