1 Domenica mattina, di buonʼora, esse si recarono alla tomba con gli aromi 2 e sʼaccorsero che lʼenorme pietra, che chiudeva lʼentrata, era stata spostata da una parte. 3 Entrarono, ma il corpo del Signore Gesù noi cʼera più! 4 Interdette, non sapevano che cosa pensare. Ed ecco che davanti ai loro occhi apparvero due uomini, che indossavano vestiti splendenti, così splendenti che ne restarono abbagliate. 5 Le donne, impaurite, si gettarono con la faccia a terra. Allora gli uomini chiesero: «Perché cercate in una tomba chi è vivo? 6-7 Non è più qui. È risorto! Non vi ricordate più che cosa vi disse quando eravate ancora in Galilea? Che il Messia sarebbe stato tradito, consegnato ai malvagi e crocifisso; e che sarebbe resuscitato il terzo giorno.» 8 Allora le donne si ricordarono, e 9 si precipitarono a Gerusalemme per raccontare lʼaccaduto agli undici discepoli ed a tutti gli altri. 10 (Le donne che erano andate alla tomba erano Maria Maddalena, Giovanna e Maria, madre di Giacomo, e molte altre ancora). 11 Ma la loro storia parve agli uomini il frutto di unʼallucinazione, e nessuno prestò loro fede. 12 Comunque, Pietro corse alla tomba per dare unʼocchiata. Chinandosi per guardare, vide soltanto i panni di lino lì per terra, allora se ne tornò a casa di nuovo, chiedendosi che cosa mai fosse accaduto. 13 Quello stesso giorno due discepoli di Gesù stavano camminando verso il villaggio di Emmaus, a dodici chilometri da Gerusalemme. 14-15 Cammin facendo, parlavano di tutto quello che era accaduto, quando improvvisamente Gesù stesso sʼavvicinò e si unì a loro. 16 Ma essi erano incapaci di riconoscerlo. 17-18 «Pare che stiate discutendo seriamente di qualche cosa», disse Gesù. «Di che state parlando?» Una profonda tristezza traspariva dai loro visi. Uno di loro, Cleopa, rispose: «Tu devi essere il solo forestiero in tutta Gerusalemme a non sapere che cose tremende sono capitate la settimana scorsa!» Gesù domandò: 19 «Quali cose?» «Ciò che è accaduto a Gesù di Nazaret», risposero. «Egli era un profeta, che faceva potenti miracoli, ed era anche un grande maestro, stimato da Dio e dagli uomini. 20 Ma i capi sacerdoti e i nostri capi religiosi lo hanno arrestato e consegnato al governo romano, perché fosse condannato a morte; e lʼhanno crocifisso. 21 E dire che noi speravamo che fosse lui il glorioso Messia, e che fosse venuto per salvare Israele! Non bastava tutto questo che è capitato tre giorni fa! 22-23 Questa mattina presto, alcune donne del gruppo dei suoi discepoli sono andate alla sua tomba e sono ritornate con una notizia da capogiro: il suo corpo non cʼè più, e due angeli hanno detto loro che Gesù è vivo! 24 Alcuni dei nostri sono corsi al sepolcro a vedere, ed è proprio vero, il corpo di Gesù non cʼè più, come le donne hanno detto! Ma neppure lui!» 25 Allora Gesù esclamò: «Uomini corti di cervello! Vi riesce così difficile credere a tutto ciò che i profeti hanno detto nelle Scritture? 26 Non fu predetto chiaramente dai profeti che il Messia avrebbe sofferto tutte queste cose, prima che iniziasse il tempo della sua gloria?» 27 Poi Gesù, cominciando dalla Genesi e proseguendo attraverso le Scritture, spiegò loro il significato di tutto ciò che era stato scritto sul suo conto. 28-29 Quando furono vicini ad Emmaus e il viaggio stava per terminare, Gesù finse di voler proseguire, ma essi lo pregarono di rimanere quella notte, perché si stava facendo tardi. Così egli andò a casa loro. 30 Quando furono seduti a tavola, Gesù prese il pane, lo benedisse e, dopo averlo spezzato, lo porse ai due. 31 Improvvisamente i loro occhi si aprirono ed essi lo riconobbero. Ma in quel preciso momento Gesù scomparve. 32 Cominciarono allora a dirsi lʼun lʼaltro: «Ecco perché mentre ci spiegava le Scritture, durante il cammino, per poco il cuore non ci balzava dal petto!» 33-34 Subito si misero di nuovo sulla via del ritorno verso Gerusalemme, dove incontrarono gli undici apostoli e gli altri discepoli di Gesù, che li salutarono con queste parole: «Il Signore è davvero risorto! È apparso a Pietro!» 35 Allora i due discepoli di Emmaus raccontarono come Gesù fosse apparso anche a loro, durante il cammino verso Emmaus, e come lo avevano riconosciuto, mentre spezzava il pane. 36 Stavano ancora parlando di questo fatto quando Gesù stesso apparve improvvisamente in mezzo a loro. «Pace a voi!» li salutò. 37 Tutti rimasero terribilmente spaventati, pensando di vedere un fantasma. 38 «Perché avete paura?» chiese Gesù. «Perché mettete in dubbio che sia proprio io? 39 Guardate le mie mani e i miei piedi, sono proprio io! Toccatemi e rendetevi conto che non sono un fantasma! Gli spiriti non hanno corpo, io invece ce lʼho!» 40 Mentre parlava, mostrava loro le mani e i piedi (perché vedessero i segni dei chiodi). 41 I discepoli, però, erano ancora indecisi, pieni di gioia, ma anche di dubbio. Allora egli chiese loro: «Non avete niente da mangiare?» 42 Gli diedero un pezzo di pesce arrosto 43 e, sotto i loro occhi, Gesù mangiò. 44 Poi disse: «Quando ero con voi, prima, non vi ricordate ciò che vi dicevo: che tutte le cose scritte su di me da Mosè, dai profeti e nei Salmi dovevano avverarsi?» 45 Allora Gesù aprì loro la mente, perché finalmente capissero le Scritture. 46 Poi disse: «Sì, così fu scritto, e così è stato: il Messia doveva soffrire, morire e risorgere dalla morte il terzo giorno, 47 e nel suo nome sarebbe stato predicato il pentimento e la remissione dei peccati a tutti i popoli, cominciando da Gerusalemme. 48 Voi avete visto avverarsi queste profezie. 49 Ed ora manderò su di voi lo Spirito Santo, come promise mio Padre. Ma non cominciate ancora a predicare agli altri; rimanete in città, finché lo Spirito Santo non venga a fortificarvi con la potenza del cielo». 50 Poi Gesù li condusse fuori sulla strada verso Betania e, alzate le mani al cielo, li benedisse. 51 Mentre li benediceva, partì da loro e salì in cielo. 52 Ed essi lo adorarono, poi ritornarono a Gerusalemme pieni di gioia, 53 e rimasero continuamente nel tempio a lodare Dio.

The Resurrection

On the Road to Emmaus

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles^[1] from Jerusalem, (Mar 16,12) 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, (Mar 6,48) 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. (Lu 9,12) 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. (Mat 14,19) 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. Jesus Appears to His Disciples

The Ascension
