1Poi uno dei sette angeli che avevano seminato i flagelli venne a parlarmi. «Vieni qui», disse, «e ti farò vedere che cosa capiterà alla famosa prostituta che abita vicino a molte acque.2Con lei hanno fatto allʼamore i re della terra; e gli abitanti del mondo si sono ubriacati col vino della sua corruzione!»3E mi trasportò in ispirito nel deserto. Là vidi una donna seduta sopra un animale di colore scarlatto, un mostro con sette teste e dieci corna, tutto coperto di scritte blasfeme contro Dio.4La donna indossava abiti color porpora e rosso scarlatto. Aveva gioielli meravigliosi dʼoro, di pietre preziose e di perle, e in mano teneva un calice dʼoro colmo delle oscenità della sua depravazione.5Quella donna portava scritto in fronte un nome misterioso: «Babilonia», la grande, la madre delle prostitute e delle abominazioni della terra.6Mi accorsi che era ubriaca del sangue di quelli che appartengono a Dio e dei martiri di Gesù. La fissai con sorpresa.7Allora lʼangelo mi chiese: «Perché ti meravigli? Ti spiegherò io chi è quella donna e che cosa rappresenta il mostro che cavalca.8Il mostro che hai visto era, ma non è più. Sta per salire dal pozzo senza fondo per andarsene alla perdizione eterna. Gli abitanti della terra, i cui nomi sono scritti nel libro della vita fin dallʼinizio della creazione, saranno sorpresi nel vederlo riapparire dopo la sua morte.9Qui ci vuole acume, rifletti: le sette teste del mostro rappresentano sette colli, su cui la donna ha la sua residenza.10Rappresentano anche sette re. Cinque sono già caduti, il sesto regna attualmente e il settimo non è ancora venuto, ma quando verrà, il suo regno durerà per poco.11La bestia che era e non è più è anchʼessa un re, lʼottavo, che ha regnato come uno degli altri sette. Dopo aver regnato, finirà in perdizione.12Le dieci corna del mostro rappresentano dieci re, che non sono ancora saliti al potere, ma regneranno insieme con il mostro soltanto per poco tempo.13Costoro firmeranno tutti un trattato per dare al mostro la loro forza e il loro potere.14Insieme dichiareranno guerra allʼAgnello, ma lʼAgnello li vincerà, perché è il Signore dei signori, il Re dei re. Con lui prenderanno parte alla vittoria quelli che sono stati chiamati e prescelti: i suoi fedeli».15Lʼangelo proseguì: «E gli oceani, i laghi, i fiumi, sulle cui rive abita la prostituta, rappresentano i popoli di ogni nazione e lingua.16Il mostro scarlatto e le sue dieci corna, che rappresentano i dieci re, odieranno la prostituta, lʼattaccheranno e la lasceranno desolata e nuda; divoreranno la sua carne e il resto lo daranno alle fiamme.17Infatti Dio metterà in mente ai dieci re un piano per mezzo del quale raggiungerà i suoi scopi: essi si metteranno tutti dʼaccordo per dare il loro potere al mostro scarlatto finché le parole di Dio non si saranno avverate.18E quella donna che hai visto rappresenta la grande città che governa sopra i re della terra».
1Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, (Is 1,21; Ger 2,20; Ger 51,13; Na 3,4; Ap 15,7; Ap 17,15; Ap 19,2; Ap 21,9)2with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.” (Is 23,17; Ger 51,7; Ap 3,10; Ap 14,8; Ap 18,3; Ap 18,9)3And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. (Ap 12,3; Ap 12,6; Ap 12,14; Ap 13,1; Ap 17,7; Ap 17,9; Ap 17,12; Ap 21,10)4The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. (Ger 51,7; Da 11,38; Ap 18,6; Ap 18,16)5And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.” (2Te 2,7; Ap 14,8; Ap 17,7)6And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.[1] When I saw her, I marveled greatly. (Ap 2,13; Ap 13,15; Ap 16,6)7But the angel said to me, “Why do you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her. (Ap 17,5)8The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit[2] and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come. (Ap 1,4; Ap 3,5; Ap 3,10; Ap 9,1; Ap 11,7; Ap 13,3; Ap 13,10; Ap 17,11)9This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; (Ap 13,18)10they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while.11As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction. (Ap 11,17; Ap 17,8)12And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings for one hour, together with the beast. (Da 7,24; Zac 1,18; Ap 13,1; Ap 17,16; Ap 18,10; Ap 18,17; Ap 18,19)13These are of one mind, and they hand over their power and authority to the beast.14They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.” (De 10,17; Sal 136,3; Da 2,47; Mat 28,18; Lu 18,7; At 10,36; Ro 1,6; 1Ti 6,15; Ap 1,5; Ap 2,10; Ap 3,21; Ap 16,14; Ap 19,16)15And the angel[3] said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages. (Is 8,7; Ap 17,1)16And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the prostitute. They will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire, (Le 21,9; Ger 50,41; Ez 16,37; Ez 16,39; Ap 17,12; Ap 18,8; Ap 18,17; Ap 18,19; Ap 19,18)17for God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and handing over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. (2Co 8,16; 2Te 2,11)18And the woman that you saw is the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.” (Ap 16,19)
