1Mais tarde, Jesus subiu a Jerusalém para uma das festas religiosas judaicas.2Dentro da cidade, próximo da porta das Ovelhas, ficava o tanque que, em hebraico, se chama Betesda, com cinco alpendres cobertos em volta.3Multidões de doentes, coxos, cegos e paralíticos, estavam ali deitados à espera dum certo movimento da água.4Pois de vez em quando vinha um anjo do Senhor que a agitava e a primeira pessoa que nela entrasse, logo depois, ficava curada.5Um dos homens que ali se encontravam estava aleijado havia trinta e oito anos.6Quando Jesus o viu e soube há quanto tempo estava doente, perguntou-lhe: “Queres ficar curado?”7“Sim”, disse o doente, “mas não tenho ninguém que me ajude a entrar no tanque logo que a água se agita. Enquanto estou a tentar entrar, há sempre outro que se mete à minha frente.”8Jesus disse-lhe: “Levanta-te, enrola a tua esteira e vai para casa!”9Imediatamente aquele homem ficou bom e enrolando a esteira começou a andar. Ora, este milagre foi realizado num sábado.10E os líderes religiosos judaicos começaram a dizer ao homem que fora curado: “Não se pode trabalhar em dia de sábado! É ilegal carregares hoje com essa esteira!”11Mas ele respondeu: “Aquele que me curou é que me disse para o fazer.”12“E quem foi que te mandou fazer uma coisa dessas?”, perguntaram-lhe.13O homem não sabia, pois entretanto Jesus desaparecera na multidão.14Mais tarde, Jesus encontrou-o no templo e disse-lhe: “Agora que estás curado, deixa de pecar, para que não te aconteça alguma coisa ainda pior.”15O homem foi ter com os judeus e disse-lhes que Jesus é que o curara.
Vida através do Filho de Deus
16Os judeus começaram a fazer uma campanha contra Jesus, dizendo que transgredia a lei de descanso no dia de sábado.17Mas Jesus respondeu: “Meu Pai trabalha até agora e eu trabalho também.”18Por causa disto, os judeus sentiam ainda maior desejo de o matar, pois além de desobedecer à suas leis acerca do sábado, chamara a Deus seu Pai, pondo-se assim em igualdade com Deus.19Jesus acrescentou, em resposta: “É realmente como vos digo: o Filho nada pode fazer por si só. Faz unicamente o que vê o Pai fazer e do mesmo modo.20Pois o Pai ama o Filho e diz-lhe tudo o que faz. E o Filho realizará obras maiores do que a cura deste homem, de forma que hão de ficar maravilhados.21Tal como o Pai ressuscita os mortos e os vivifica, assim também o Filho dará a vida a quem entender.22-23E o Pai confia todo o julgamento ao Filho, para que todos honrem o Filho, assim como honram o Pai. Mas se não quiserem honrar o Filho de Deus, que ele vos enviou, certamente não estarão a honrar o Pai.24É realmente como vos digo: quem ouve a minha mensagem e crê em Deus, que me enviou, tem a vida eterna e não será condenado pelos seus pecados, antes passou já da morte para a vida.25É realmente como vos digo: vem o momento, e já chegou, em que os mortos ouvirão a minha voz, a voz do Filho de Deus; e os que a escutarem viverão.26O Pai tem vida em si mesmo e do mesmo modo concedeu ao Filho que também ele tenha vida em si mesmo.27E deu-lhe autoridade para julgar toda a humanidade, por ser o Filho do Homem.28Não se admirem! Vem até o momento em que todos os mortos ouvirão nas suas sepulturas a voz do Filho de Deus.29E levantar-se-ão de novo; os que praticaram o bem, para a vida eterna, e os que continuaram no mal, para o julgamento.30Mas eu não pronuncio sentença sem falar com o Pai. Julgo segundo ele me manda. E o meu julgamento é justo, pois está de acordo com a vontade de Deus, que me enviou, e não é só meu.
Testemunhos sobre Jesus
31Se dou testemunho de mim próprio, o meu testemunho não é aceite.32Mas há um outro que dá testemunho a meu respeito, e sei que o testemunho que dá ele a meu respeito é verdadeiro.33Vocês foram escutar as pregações de João Batista, e posso garantir que tudo o que diz acerca de mim é verdadeiro. Mas o testemunho mais verdadeiro que tenho não provém de um homem,34embora vos tenha lembrado o testemunho de João para crerem em mim e serem salvos.35João brilhou durante algum tempo e vocês, que tiraram proveito disso, alegraram-se.36Mas eu tenho um testemunho maior do que o de João: os milagres que faço; esses foram-me confiados pelo Pai e provam que foi ele que me enviou.37E o próprio Pai deu testemunho acerca de mim, embora sem vos aparecer pessoalmente nem vos falar de forma direta.38Contudo, vocês não me escutam, porque não querem crer em mim, que fui enviado para vos dar a mensagem de Deus.39Examinam as Escrituras, porque creem que vos trarão a vida eterna, e são elas que apontam para mim.40No entanto, não querem vir a mim para que vos dê essa mesma vida eterna.41A vossa aprovação nada significa para mim,42porque sei que não têm em vós o amor de Deus.43Vim em nome do meu Pai e não querem receber-me, embora recebam aqueles que não são enviados por ele, e que se representam a si próprios.44Não admira que não possam crer! Porque de bom grado se honram uns aos outros, mas não cuidam da honra que provém do único Deus!45No entanto, não sou eu quem vos acusará disto diante do Pai, mas sim Moisés; esse em cujas leis vão buscar a vossa esperança do céu!46Porque também não querem crer em Moisés. Ele escreveu acerca de mim, mas recusam crer nele e, portanto, não querem crer em mim.47Uma vez que não acreditam no que ele escreveu, não admira que também não me deem crédito!”
1After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (Ne 3:1; Ne 3:32; Ne 12:39)3In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.[3] (Mt 12:10)5One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”7The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”8Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” (Mt 9:6; Mc 2:9; Mc 2:11; Lc 5:24)9And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. (Jo 5:8; Jo 9:14)10So the Jews[4] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” (Ex 20:10; Ne 13:19; Jr 17:21; Mt 12:2; Mc 2:24; Mc 3:4; Lc 6:2; Lc 13:14; Jo 7:23; Jo 9:16)11But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’”12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. (Jo 6:15)14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” (Ed 9:14; Jo 8:11)15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.16And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. (Jo 7:23; Jo 9:16; Jo 15:20; At 9:4)17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
Jesus Is Equal with God
18This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. (Jo 5:16; Jo 7:1; Jo 10:33; Rm 8:32; Fp 2:6)
The Authority of the Son
19So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[5] does, that the Son does likewise. (Jo 5:30; Jo 16:13)20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. (Mt 3:17; Jo 3:35; Jo 7:21; Jo 10:17; Jo 14:12; Jo 15:9; Jo 17:23)21For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. (Dt 32:39; Jo 6:33; Jo 11:25; Rm 4:17; Rm 8:11; Rm 9:18; 1 Co 15:45; 2 Co 1:9)22For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, (Jo 3:17; Jo 5:27; Jo 9:39; Jo 17:2; At 10:42; At 17:31)23that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. (Lc 10:16; Jo 8:49; Jo 15:23; 1 Jo 2:23)24Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. (Jo 3:15; Jo 3:18; Jo 3:36; Jo 5:29; Jo 8:51; Jo 12:44; Jo 20:31; 1 Jo 3:14; 1 Jo 5:9)25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. (Jo 4:21; Jo 4:23; Jo 11:43; Ef 2:1; Ef 2:5)26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. (Jo 1:4; Jo 6:57; Jo 17:2)27And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. (Jo 5:22)28Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice (Jo 5:25; Jo 11:24; Jo 11:44; 1 Co 15:52)29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. Witnesses to Jesus
30“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. (Mt 26:39; Jo 4:34; Jo 5:19; Jo 6:38; Jo 7:18; Jo 8:16; Jo 8:28; Jo 14:10; Rm 15:3)31If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. (Jo 8:13; Jo 8:18; Jo 8:54; Jo 18:21)32There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. (Jo 5:37; Jo 7:28)33You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. (Jo 1:7; Jo 1:19)34Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. (1 Jo 5:9)35He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. (Mt 13:20; Mt 21:26; 2 Pe 1:19)36But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. (Mt 11:4; Jo 2:23; Jo 3:2; Jo 3:17; Jo 4:34; Jo 5:34; Jo 10:25; Jo 10:38; Jo 14:11; Jo 15:24)37And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, (Mt 3:17; Jo 1:18; Jo 8:18)38and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. (1 Jo 2:14; 1 Jo 4:13; 1 Jo 5:10)39You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, (Lc 24:27; At 17:11; 2 Tm 3:15)40yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. (Mt 23:37; Lc 13:34; Jo 3:19; Jo 5:43; Jo 7:17)41I do not receive glory from people. (Mt 6:1; Jo 5:34; 1 Ts 2:6)42But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. (Lc 11:42; Jo 2:24; Jd 1:21)43I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. (Mt 24:5; Jo 1:11; Jo 3:11; Jo 3:32; Jo 10:25; Jo 12:13; Jo 17:12)44How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? (Jo 17:3; Rm 2:29)45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. (Jo 9:28; Rm 2:17)46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. (Nm 21:9; Dt 18:15; Lc 24:27; Jo 5:47; Jo 12:41)47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?” (Lc 16:31)
