O consolo para o povo de Deus

1 “Consolem o meu povo, diz o vosso Deus. 2 Falem ternamente a Jerusalém e digam-lhe que os seus dias de tristeza já se foram. Os seus pecados são perdoados e já recebeu do SENHOR o dobro do castigo pelos seus pecados.” 3 Ouçam! Eu ouvi a voz de alguém gritando: “Façam um caminho para o SENHOR no deserto. Façam um caminho direito para o nosso Deus. 4 Sejam levantados os vales e nivelados todos os montes e colinas; sejam aplanados os caminhos tortuosos da montanha, limpas as veredas pedregosas e tapadas as suas covas. 5 A glória do SENHOR será vista por toda a raça humana junta.” Foi o SENHOR quem falou; assim acontecerá. 6 Disse a voz: “Clama bem alto!” “O que é que eu hei de clamar?”, perguntei. “Que o ser humano é como a erva e que toda a sua beleza murcha como as flores que morrem. 7 A erva seca e as flores murcham sob o sopro do SENHOR. E assim é com a frágil criatura humana. 8 A erva seca e as flores murcham, contudo, a palavra do nosso Deus permanece para sempre.” 9 Tu, ó Sião, anunciador de boas novas, sobe a um alto monte! Tu, anunciador de boas novas a Jerusalém, grita bem alto, não tenhas receio, e diz às cidades de Judá: “Eis aqui o vosso Deus!” 10 Sim, o SENHOR Deus vem aí com grande poder. Governará com domínio eficaz. Dará a cada um a justa recompensa. 11 Alimentará o seu rebanho como um pastor; levará nos braços os cordeirinhos e guiará mansamente as ovelhas que amamentam. 12 Quem mais tem poder para segurar nas suas mãos os oceanos e para conhecer os céus em todas as suas medidas? Quem mais conhece perfeitamente o peso de toda a Terra, das montanhas e das cordilheiras? 13 Quem conheceu todo o pensamento do SENHOR ou quem é seu conselheiro? 14 Alguma vez terá precisado de ser instruído quanto ao que é reto, ao que é melhor? Quem é que lhe ensinou a ciência e lhe deu a conhecer a sabedoria? 15 Porque os povos do mundo nada são em relação a ele; são como uma gota de água que cai num balde ou como um grão de pó no prato duma balança. Pega nas ilhas como se fossem coisa sem peso. 16 As florestas do Líbano juntas não formariam combustível suficiente para consumir um holocausto no seu altar; nem tão-pouco todos os seus animais seriam suficientes para o holocausto. 17 Todas as nações são como nada para ele; aos seus olhos, são até menos que nada; são vazio e nulidade. 18 Como se poderá então descrever Deus? Com que é que poderá ser comparado? 19 Com algum ídolo? Com um ídolo qualquer, feito segundo um molde, pintado de tinta dourada, com cadeias prateadas em volta do pescoço? 20 Qualquer pessoa, se não tiver dinheiro bastante para comprar um ídolo desses, pode pegar num pedaço de madeira e procurar um artífice para lhe fazer um ídolo que possa durar! 21 Serão vocês assim tão ignorantes? Serão assim tão surdos às palavras de Deus, palavras essas que já foram dadas desde a fundação do mundo? Nunca ouviram nem compreenderam isso? 22 É Deus quem se senta acima do globo da Terra, cujos habitantes são para ele como minúsculos gafanhotos. É ele quem estende os céus como uma cortina, como se fizesse com ela a sua tenda. 23 Reduz a nada os grandes senhores desta Terra e torna inúteis os seus governantes. 24 Dificilmente estabilizam e criam raízes, se Deus soprar sobre eles; as suas obras perdem todo o seu valor, levando-as o vento como à palha. 25 “Com quem me hão de comparar então? Quem será semelhante a mim?”, pergunta aquele que é Santo. 26 Vejam os céus! Quem foi que criou todas essas estrelas? Tal como um pastor conduz as suas ovelhas, chamando cada uma pelo seu nome, e as conta para ver se alguma se terá perdido ou desviado, assim Deus faz com os astros! 27 Ó Jacob, ó Israel, como podes tu dizer que o SENHOR não vê as tuas aflições, que não se interessa em fazer-te justiça? 28 Não compreendes? Não sabes tu já que o eterno Deus, o Criador das mais distantes partes da Terra, nunca fica cansado nem desfalecido? Ninguém jamais conseguirá descobrir a profundidade do seu pensamento. 29 Dá novas forças ao que está cansado e multiplica as energias daquele que está fraco. 30 Até mesmo a juventude se cansará; há jovens que acabarão por desistir. 31 Mas os que confiam no SENHOR renovarão as suas forças. Subirão com asas como águias; correrão e não se cansarão; andarão sem desfalecerem.

Comfort for God’s People

1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. (Is 51:12; Lc 2:25) 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare^[1] is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. 4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. The Word of God Stands Forever

7 The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. (Tg 1:11)

The Greatness of God

9 Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news;^[5] lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news;^[6] lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” (Is 52:7) 10 Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? 19 An idol! A craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts for it silver chains. (Is 40:18) 20 He who is too impoverished for an offering chooses wood^[8] that will not rot; he seeks out a skillful craftsman to set up an idol that will not move.
