1 Com os discípulos a aumentar tão rapidamente em número, havia no seu meio murmúrios de descontentamento. Os que só falavam grego queixavam-se de que as suas viúvas eram postas à margem e de que não lhes davam tanta comida na distribuição diária como às viúvas que falavam hebraico. 2 Então os doze combinaram uma reunião com a assembleia dos discípulos: “Nós, os apóstolos, devíamos gastar o nosso tempo a pregar e não a distribuir comida”, disseram. 3 “Por isso, irmãos, escolham entre vós mesmos sete homens de quem haja um bom testemunho, cheios do Espírito Santo e de sabedoria, e encarregá-los-emos deste importante trabalho. 4 Só assim poderemos dedicar tempo à oração, pregação e ensino.” 5 Isto pareceu razoável a toda a assembleia que escolheu as seguintes pessoas: Estêvão, homem de fé extraordinária e cheio do Espírito Santo, Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timom, Parmenas e Nicolau de Antioquia, um gentio que se convertera à fé judaica, e mais tarde ao cristianismo. 6 Estes sete foram apresentados aos apóstolos, que oraram por eles e os abençoaram, pondo sobre eles as mãos. 7 A palavra de Deus era pregada a um auditório cada vez maior e o número dos discípulos aumentava enormemente em Jerusalém, tendo-se convertido à fé também muitos sacerdotes. 8 Estêvão, cheio da graça e do poder de Deus, realizava grandes maravilhas e sinais entre o povo. 9 Um dia, alguns homens da chamada Sinagoga dos Homens Livres, começaram a discutir com Estêvão. Eram judeus de Cirene, de Alexandria, no Egito, das províncias da Cilícia e da província da Ásia. 10 Mas nenhum deles podia resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito pelo qual Estêvão falava. 11 Então arranjaram falsas testemunhas para declararem: “Ouvimo-lo proferir blasfémias contra Moisés e o próprio Deus.” 12 Esta acusação provocou a fúria da multidão, dos anciãos do povo e dos especialistas na Lei contra Estêvão, que o prenderam e levaram perante o conselho. 13 As testemunhas falsas tornaram a afirmar: “Este homem não cessa de falar constantemente contra este santo lugar e contra a Lei. 14 Ouvimo-lo mesmo dizer que esse tal Jesus de Nazaré há de destruir o templo e abolir os costumes que nos foram transmitidos por Moisés.” 15 Naquele momento, todos os que estavam na sala do conselho viram o rosto de Estêvão ficar como o de um anjo.

1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists[1] arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. (At 2:41; At 2:47; At 4:4; At 4:35; At 5:14; At 6:7) 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 3 Therefore, brothers,[2] pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. (Dt 1:13; Lc 1:15; Lc 4:1; At 6:5; At 7:55; At 11:24; 1 Tm 3:7) 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” (At 1:14) 5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. (Mt 23:15; At 2:11; At 6:3; At 8:5; At 11:24; At 13:43; At 21:8) 6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. (At 1:24; At 8:17; At 9:17; At 13:3; At 19:6; 1 Tm 4:14; 1 Tm 5:22; 2 Tm 1:6; Hb 6:2) 7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith. (At 12:24; At 13:8; At 14:22; At 16:5; At 19:20; Rm 1:5; Cl 1:5) 8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. (At 1:8) 9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. (Lc 21:14) 11 Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” (1 Rs 21:10; 1 Rs 21:13; Mt 26:59) 12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, 13 and they set up false witnesses who said, “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law, (Mt 24:15; At 6:11; At 7:58; At 21:28; At 25:8) 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.” (Dn 9:26; Mt 5:17; Mt 26:61; At 15:1; At 21:21) 15 And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel. (Jz 13:6; Ec 8:1)
