Wie Gott durch Maleachi das Volk Israel und besonders seine Priester zur Umkehr bewegen will. „Ich habe euch lieb!“
1Botschaft an Israel, die Jahwe seinem Boten[1] wie eine Last auferlegte:2„Ich habe euch lieb“, sagt Jahwe, „doch ihr sprecht: 'Wo liebst du uns denn?'“ – „Nun“, sagt Jahwe, „war nicht Esau Jakobs Bruder? Trotzdem liebte ich Jakob,3nicht Esau.[2] Sein Gebirge habe ich zur Wildnis gemacht, sein Erbteil den Schakalen der Wüste geschenkt.“ (Röm 9,13)4Wenn Edom[3] sagt: „Unser Land liegt in Trümmern, aber wir werden die Ruinen wieder aufbauen“, dann sagt Jahwe, der allmächtige Gott[4]: „Mögen sie nur bauen, ich werde abreißen! Man wird sie 'Land des Unrechts' nennen und 'ein von Gott verdammtes Volk'.5Ihr werdet es selber sehen und sagen: 'Groß erweist sich Jahwe über Israels Grenzen hinaus.'“
„Warum ehrt ihr mich nicht?“
6„Gewöhnlich ehrt ein Sohn den Vater und ein Diener seinen Herrn. Wenn ich nun euer Vater sein soll – wo ist meine Ehre? Wenn ich Herr bin – wo ist eure Ehrfurcht vor mir?“ Das sagt Jahwe, der allmächtige Gott, zu euch Priestern, die ihr seinen Namen verachtet. Aber ihr sprecht: „Wieso verachten wir denn deinen Namen?“7„Ihr legt verdreckte Speisen auf meinen Altar und sagt noch: 'Womit haben wir dich denn besudelt?' Ihr meint, Jahwes Tisch verachten zu können.8Wenn ihr ein blindes Tier opfert, denkt ihr, es sei nicht so schlimm. Bringt ihr ein lahmes oder krankes, meint ihr: 'Es macht nichts'. Bietet so etwas doch einmal eurem Statthalter an! Denkt ihr wirklich, dass er euch dann gnädig ansieht?“, sagt Jahwe, der allmächtige Gott.9„Und unseren Gott wollt ihr mit solchen Opfern erweichen, dass er uns gnädig ist? Ihr meint doch nicht im Ernst, dass der allmächtige Gott sich das gefallen lässt?10Ich wünschte, dass einer von euch die Tempeltore zuschließt, damit nicht umsonst Feuer auf dem Altar leuchtet. – Ich habe genug von euch und euren Opfergaben!“, sagt Jahwe, der allmächtige Gott.11„Auf der ganzen Welt – von dort, wo die Sonne aufgeht bis dahin, wo sie untergeht – wird mein Name unter den Völkern geehrt. An unzähligen Orten werden mir würdige Opfer gebracht, weil sie mich, den allmächtigen Gott, ehren.12Aber ihr zieht meinen Namen in den Schmutz und sagt, dass man es mit dem Tisch des Herrn nicht so genau nehmen muss, dass es auf die Opfergaben nicht besonders ankommt.13Und dann jammert ihr über euren Dienst und verachtet ihn, denn ihr bringt nicht nur lahme und kranke Tiere, sondern lasst sogar geraubte als Opfer zu. Soll ich, Jahwe, der allmächtige Gott, mich darüber noch freuen?14Nein, verflucht sei der Betrüger! – Da gibt es in seiner Herde ein makelloses männliches Tier, das er mir mit einem Gelübde versprochen hat. Doch dann schlachtet er ein beschädigtes Tier für mich. – Denn ich, Jahwe, der allmächtige Gott, bin ein Großkönig und mein Name wird von den Völkern gefürchtet.“

Israel doubts God’s love
2‘Israel, I have loved you,’ says the LORD. ‘But you ask, “How have you loved us?” ‘Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?’ says the LORD. ‘But I chose Jacob3instead of Esau. I have turned Esau’s hill country into a dry and empty land. I left that land of Edom to the wild dogs in the desert.’4Edom might say, ‘We have been crushed. But we’ll rebuild our cities.’ The LORD who rules over all says, ‘They might rebuild their cities. But I will destroy them. They will be called the Evil Land. My anger will always remain on them.5You will see it with your own eyes. You will say, “The LORD is great! He rules even beyond the borders of Israel!”
Give your best to the Lord
6‘A son honours his father. A slave honours his master. If I am a father, where is the honour I should have? If I am a master, where is the respect you should give me?’ says the LORD who rules over all. ‘You priests look down on me. ‘But you ask, “How have we looked down on you?”7‘You sacrifice “unclean” food on my altar. ‘But you ask, “How have we made you ‘unclean’?” ‘You do it by looking down on my altar.8You sacrifice blind animals to me. Isn’t that wrong? You sacrifice disabled or ill animals. Isn’t that wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?’ says the LORD who rules over all.9‘Now plead with God to be gracious to us! But as long as you give offerings like those, how can he accept you?’ says the LORD.10‘You might as well shut the temple doors! Then you would not light useless fires on my altar. I am not pleased with you,’ says the LORD. ‘I will not accept any of the offerings you bring.11My name will be great among the nations. They will worship me from where the sun rises in the east to where it sets in the west. In every place, incense and pure offerings will be brought to me. That’s because my name will be great among the nations,’ says the LORD.12‘But you treat my name as if it were not holy. You say the LORD’s altar is “unclean”. And you look down on its food.13You say, “What a heavy load our work is!” And you turn up your nose. You act as if you hate working for me,’ says the LORD who rules over all. ‘You bring animals that have been hurt. Or you bring disabled or ill animals. Then you dare to offer them to me as sacrifices! Should I accept them from you?’ says the LORD.14‘Suppose you have a male sheep or goat that does not have any flaws. And you promise to offer it to me. But then you sacrifice an animal that has flaws. When you do that, you cheat me. And anyone who cheats me is under my curse. After all, I am a great king,’ says the LORD who rules over all. ‘The other nations have respect for my name. So why don’t you respect it?
