1 Dann wanderten wir wieder zurück in die Wüste auf dem Weg Richtung Schilfmeer, wie Jahwe es mir gesagt hatte. Eine lange Zeit zogen wir um das Bergland von Seïr herum. 2 Dann sagte Jahwe zu mir: 3 „Ihr seid jetzt lange genug um dieses Gebirge herumgezogen, wendet euch nun nach Norden. 4 Befiehl dem Volk: 'Ihr zieht nun durch das Gebiet eurer Brüder, der Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seïr wohnen. Sie werden sich vor euch fürchten. Nehmt euch aber sehr in Acht! 5 Lasst euch auf keinen Streit mit ihnen ein, denn ich werde euch von ihrem Land keinen Fußbreit geben. Denn das Bergland von Seïr habe ich für Esau zum Erbbesitz bestimmt. 6 Wenn ihr Nahrungsmittel oder Wasser braucht, sollt ihr es ihnen bezahlen.' 7 Denn Jahwe, dein Gott, hat dich in all deinem Tun gesegnet. Er hat auf deine Wanderung durch diese große Wüste achtgegeben. Vierzig Jahre ist Jahwe, dein Gott, nun schon mit dir. Und es hat dir an nichts gefehlt.“ 8 So zogen wir von Elat und Ezjon-Geber aus an unseren Brüdern vorüber. Das waren die Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seïr wohnten. Wir nahmen den Weg durch die Araba und zogen weiter durch die Steppe von Moab. 9 Da sagte Jahwe zu mir: „Greift die Moabiter^[1] nicht an und lasst euch auf keinen Krieg mit ihnen ein. Auch von ihrem Land gebe ich euch nichts, denn Ar^[2] habe ich den Nachkommen Lots zum Erbbesitz gegeben. – 10 Früher haben die Emiter dort gewohnt, ein großes, zahlreiches und hochgewachsenes Volk wie die Anakiter. 11 Sie werden wie die Anakiter zu den Refaïtern gezählt; die Moabiter aber nennen sie Emiter. 12 Und in Seïr wohnten früher die Horiter. Aber die Nachkommen Esaus haben sie vernichtet und ihren Besitz übernommen. Sie ließen sich an ihrer Stelle nieder, so wie es Israel mit dem Land gemacht hat, das Jahwe ihnen zum Besitz gab. – 13 Nun brecht auf und überschreitet das Tal des Sered.“ Wir taten es. 14 Seit unserem Aufbruch von Kadesch-Barnea waren 38 Jahre vergangen. Inzwischen war die ganze Generation der kriegstüchtigen Männer des Lagers gestorben, wie Jahwe es ihnen geschworen hatte. 15 Er hatte dafür gesorgt, dass sie vollständig aus dem Lager beseitigt wurden. 16 Als nun alle Krieger aus dem Volk weggestorben waren, 17 sagte Jahwe zu mir: 18 „Du wirst nun durch das Gebiet von Moab und Ar ziehen 19 und in die Nähe der Ammoniter^[3] kommen. Greif sie nicht an und lass dich auf keinen Streit mit ihnen ein, denn ich werde dir vom Land der Ammoniter nichts geben, weil ich es den Nachkommen Lots zum Erbbesitz gab.“ – 20 Auch dieses Gebiet gilt als Land der Refaïter. Sie hatten vorher dort gewohnt. Die Ammoniter nannten sie Samsummiter. 21 Es war ein großes, zahlreiches und hochgewachsenes Volk wie die Anakiter. Jahwe vernichtete sie vor ihnen und sie übernahmen deren Besitz und wohnten an ihrer Stelle dort, 22 so wie Jahwe es für die Nachkommen Esaus getan hat, die in Seïr wohnen, vor denen er die Horiter vernichtete, sodass sie deren Besitz übernahmen und sich an ihrer Stelle niederließen. 23 Das Gleiche machten die Kaftoriter mit den Awitern, die in den Dörfern bei Gaza wohnten. Als sie aus Kaftor^[4] kamen, vernichteten sie die Awiter und ließen sich an ihrer Stelle dort nieder. – 24 „Brecht jetzt auf!“, sagte Jahwe, „und überquert den Arnonfluss. Ich habe den Amoriterkönig Sihon von Heschbon und sein Land in deine Gewalt gegeben. Fang an, nimm es in Besitz und lass dich auf einen Krieg mit ihm ein! 25 Von heute an will ich Schrecken und Furcht vor euch über alle Völker unter dem Himmel bringen. Alle, die davon hören, werden vor euch zittern.“

Die Eroberung von Sihons Reich

26 Da schickte ich Boten von der Wüste Kedemot zu König Sihon von Heschbon mit friedlichen Worten. Ich ließ ihm sagen: 27 „Ich möchte durch dein Land ziehen. Wir werden nur die Straße benutzen und weder rechts noch links vom Weg abweichen. 28 Was wir an Nahrungsmitteln und Wasser brauchen, werden wir bezahlen. Wir wollen weiter nichts, als zu Fuß hindurchziehen. 29 Auch bei den Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seïr wohnen, und den Moabitern von Ar ist das so geschehen. Ich will nur über den Jordan in das Land ziehen, das Jahwe, unser Gott, uns gibt.“ 30 Aber König Sihon von Heschbon wollte uns nicht bei sich durchziehen lassen, denn Jahwe, dein Gott, hatte ihn starrsinnig und hart gemacht, um ihn dir auszuliefern, wie es ja auch geschehen ist. 31 Jahwe sagte zu mir: „Schau, ich habe begonnen, dir Sihon und sein Land auszuliefern. Fang an, nimm es in Besitz, es soll dir gehören.“ 32 Sihon zog uns mit all seinen Streitkräften nach Jahaz^[5] entgegen. 33 Aber Jahwe, unser Gott, lieferte ihn uns aus. Wir töteten ihn, seine Söhne und sein ganzes Volk. 34 Damals nahmen wir alle seine Städte ein und vollstreckten den Bann an ihren Bewohnern, an Männern, Frauen und Kindern. Keinen ließen wir lebend entkommen. 35 Nur das Vieh behielten wir für uns als Beute und das Raubgut aus den Städten, die wir eingenommen hatten. 36 Von Aroër an, das am Rand des Arnontals liegt, und von der Stadt im Flusstal bis nach Gilead^[6] gab es keine Stadt, die uns zu stark gewesen wäre, alle lieferte Jahwe, unser Gott, uns aus. 37 Nur vom Land der Ammoniter, dem ganzen Gebiet am Fluss Jabbok, hast du dich ferngehalten, auch von den Städten im Bergland, wie Jahwe, unser Gott, es befohlen hat.

1 ثُمَّ تَحَوَّلْنَا وَانْطَلَقْنَا نَحْوَ الصَّحْرَاءِ فِي اتِّجَاهِ الْبَحْرِ الأَحْمَرِ كَمَا أَمَرَنِي الرَّبُّ، وَدُرْنَا حَوْلَ جَبَلِ سِعِيرَ أَيَّاماً كَثِيرَةً. 2 ثُمَّ قَالَ الرَّبُّ لِي: 3 حَسْبُكُمْ دَوَرَانٌ حَوْلَ هَذَا الْجَبَلِ. هَيَّا اتَّجِهُوا نَحْوَ الشِّمَالِ. 4 وَأَوْصِ الشَّعْبَ: هَا أَنْتُمْ عَابِرُونَ بِتُخُومِ إِخْوَتِكُمْ بَنِي عِيسُو الْمُسْتَوْطِنِينَ فِي سِعِيرَ فَيَعْتَرِيهُمُ الْخَوْفُ مِنْكُمْ 5 فَاحْذَرُوا جِدّاً أَنْ تُهَاجِمُوهُمْ، لأَنَّنِي لَا أُوَرِّثُكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِهِمْ وَلا وَطْأَةَ قَدَمٍ، لأَنِّي قَدْ أَعْطَيْتُ جَبَلَ سِعِيرَ مِيرَاثاً لِعِيسُو. 6 تَدْفَعُونَ ثَمَنَ مَا تَشْتَرُونَهُ مِنْ طَعَامٍ لِتَأْكُلُوا، وَمَا تَبْتَاعُونَهُ مِنْ مَاءٍ لِتَشْرَبُوا. 7 لأَنَّ الرَّبَّ إِلَهَكُمْ بَارَكَ كُلَّ عَمَلِ أَيْدِيكُمْ، وَاعْتَنَى بِكُمْ فِي أَثْنَاءِ رِحْلَتِكُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الصَّحْرَاءِ الشَّاسِعَةِ، وَكَانَ مَعَكُمْ طَوَالَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً، فَلَمْ يُعْوِزْكُمْ شَيْءٌ 8 فَاجْتَزْنَا بِإِخْوَتِنَا بَنِي عِيسُو الْمُقِيمِينَ فِي سِعِيرَ، مُتَّجِهِينَ فِي طَرِيقِ وَادِي الْعَرَبَةِ جَنُوباً صَوْبَ إِيلاتَ وَعَصْيُونَ جَابِرَ، ثُمَّ انْثَنَيْنَا وَمَرَرْنَا فِي طَرِيقِ صَحْرَاءِ مُوآبَ. 9 فَقَالَ لِي الرَّبُّ: لَا تُعَادِ الْمُوآبِيِّينَ وَلا تُثِرْ عَلَيْهِمْ حَرْباً، لأَنِّي لَا أُعْطِيكَ مِنْ أَرْضِهِمْ مِيرَاثاً، إِذْ وَهَبْتُ مَدِينَةَ عَارَ لِذُرِّيَّةِ لُوطٍ مِلْكاً. 10 فَقَدْ سَكَنَ فِيهَا الإِيمِيُّونَ قَبْلاً، وَهُمْ شَعْبٌ كَثِيرٌ وَطُوَالُ الْقَامَةِ كَالْعَنَاقِيِّينَ، 11 وَهُمْ يُعْتَبَرُونَ رَفَائِيِّينَ كَالْعَنَاقِيِّينَ. غَيْرَ أَنَّ المُوآبِيِّينَ يَدْعُونَهُمُ الإِيمِيِّينَ. 12 كَذَلِكَ اسْتَوْطَنَ الْحُورِيُّونَ أَرْضَ سِعِيرَ مِنْ قَبْلُ، فَطَرَدَهُمْ بَنُو عِيسُو وَأَبَادُوهُمْ وَحَلُّوا مَكَانَهُمْ، تَمَاماً كَمَا فَعَلَ الإِسْرَائِيلِيُّونَ بِالأَرْضِ الَّتِي وَهَبَهَا لَهُمُ الرَّبُّ. 13 وَالآنَ انْهَضُوا وَاعْبُرُوا وَادِي زَارَدَ. وَهَكَذَا عَبَرْنَا وَادِي زَارَدَ. 14 وَكَانَ عَدَدُ السَّنَوَاتِ الَّتِي قَضَيْنَاهَا فِي مَسِيرِنَا مِنْ قَادَشَ بَرْنِيعَ حَتَّى اجْتَزْنَا وَادِي زَارَدَ ثَمَانِيَ وَثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً، فِيهَا مَاتَ جِيلُ رِجَالِ الْحَرْبِ مِنَ الْمُخَيَّمِ، كَمَا أَقْسَمَ الرَّبُّ لَهُمْ. 15 وَهَكَذَا عَاقَبَهُمُ الرَّبُّ أَيْضاً حَتَّى أَبَادَهُمْ وَأَفْنَاهُمْ مِنَ الْمُخَيَّمِ. 16 فَعِنْدَمَا مَاتَ جَمِيعُ الْمُقَاتِلِينَ مِنْ بَيْنِ الشَّعْبِ 17 قَالَ الرَّبُّ لِي: 18 أَنْتَ عَابِرٌ الْيَوْمَ بِحُدُودِ عَارَ مِنْ أَرْضِ مُوآبَ، 19 فَمَتَى اقْتَرَبْتَ مِنْ بَنِي عَمُّونَ، لَا تُعَادِهِمْ وَلا تُهَاجِمْهُمْ، لأَنِّي لَا أَهَبُكَ مِنْ أَرْضِ بَنِي عَمُّونَ مِيرَاثاً، إِذْ وَهَبْتُهَا لِبَنِي لُوطٍ. 20 وَهِيَ أَيْضاً تُعْتَبَرُ أَرْضَ رَفَائِيِّينَ، إِذْ سَكَنُوا فِيهَا قَبْلاً. أَمَّا الْعَمُّونِيُّونَ فَيَدْعُونَهُمْ زَمْزُمِّيِّينَ. 21 وَهُمْ شَعْبٌ كَثِيرٌ طِوَالُ الْقَامَةِ كَالْعَنَاقِيِّينَ، أَبَادَهُمُ الرَّبُّ مِنْ أَمَامِ الْعَمُّونِيِّينَ فَطَرَدُوهُمْ وَأَقَامُوا مَكَانَهُمْ، 22 تَمَاماً كَمَا فَعَلَ لِذُرِّيَّةِ عِيسُو الْمُسْتَوْطِنِينَ فِي سِعِيرَ. فَقَدْ أَهْلَكَ الْحُورِيِّينَ فِي أَيَّامِهِمْ، فَطَرَدُوهُمْ وَحَلُّوا مَكَانَهُمْ إِلَى هَذَا الْيَوْمِ. 23 وَكَذَلِكَ أَبَادَ الْكَفْتُورِيُّونَ الَّذِينَ خَرَجُوا مِنْ كَفْتُورَ، الْعَوِّيِّينَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا قَاطِنِينَ فِي الْقُرَى الْمُنْتَشِرَةِ حَتَّى غَزَّةَ وَحَلُّوا مَكَانَهُمْ.

24 فَقُومُوا وَارْتَحِلُوا وَاعْبُرُوا وَادِي نَهْرِ أَرْنُونَ، وَانْظُرُوا لأَنِّي قَدْ نَصَرْتُكَ عَلَى سِيحُونَ مَلِكِ الأَمُورِيِّينَ وَأَرْضِهِ. فَابْتَدِئْ بِتَمَلُّكِ الأَرْضِ، وَأَثِرْ عَلَيْهِ حَرْباً. 25 فَفِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ بِالذَّاتِ أَجْعَلُ هَيْبَتَكُمْ وَالْخَوْفَ مِنْكُمْ يَطْغَيَانِ عَلَى شُعُوبِ الأَرْضِ. وَكُلُّ الَّذِينَ يَسْمَعُونَ أَخْبَارَكُمْ يَرْتَعِدُونَ وَيَفْزَعُونَ أَمَامَكُمْ. 26 فَأَرْسَلْتُ رُسُلاً مِنْ صَحْرَاءِ قَدِيمُوتَ إِلَى سِيحُونَ مَلِكِ حَشْبُونَ، أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ سَلاماً قَائِلاً: 27 دَعْنِي أَجْتَازُ بِأَرْضِكَ سَالِكاً الطَّرِيقَ الْعَامَّةَ، لَا أَحِيدُ عَنْهَا يَمِيناً أَوْ شِمَالاً. 28 وَسَأَدْفَعُ ثَمَنَ مَا تَبِيعُنِي مِنْ طَعَامٍ لآكُلَ، وَمَا تُعْطِينِي مِنْ مَاءٍ لأَشْرَبَ، أَمُرُّ رَاجِلاً فَقَطْ. 29 كَمَا فَعَلْتُ مَعَ بَنِي عِيسُو الْمُسْتَوْطِنِينَ فِي سِعِيرَ، وَالْمُوآبِيِّينَ الْمُقِيمِينَ فِي عَارَ. 30 لَكِنَّ سِيحُونَ مَلِكَ حَشْبُونَ رَفَضَ أَنْ يَدَعَنَا نَجْتَازُ بِبِلادِهِ، لأَنَّ الرَّبَّ إِلَهَكُمْ قَسَّى رُوحَهُ وَأَغْلَظَ قَلْبَهُ لِكَيْ يَهْزِمَهُ عَلَى أَيْدِيكُمْ كَمَا فَعَلَ الآنَ. 31 وَقَالَ لِي الرَّبُّ: انْظُرْ، هَا قَدِ ابْتَدَأْتُ أَدْفَعُ أَمَامَكَ سِيحُونَ لِتَسْتَوْلِيَ عَلَى أَرْضِهِ، فَأَسْرِعْ فِي تَمَلُّكِهَا حَتَّى تَتَغَلَّبَ عَلَيْهَا كُلِّهَا. 32 فَخَرَجَ سِيحُونُ بِكَامِلِ جَيْشِهِ إِلَى يَاهَصَ لِمُحَارَبَتِنَا. 33 فَأَتَانَا النَّصْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ عِنْدِ الرَّبِّ إِلَهِنَا، فَدَحَرْنَاهُ وَأَبْنَاءَهُ وَسَائِرَ جَيْشِهِ. 34 وَاسْتَوْلَيْنَا عَلَى جَمِيعِ مُدُنِهِ، وَقَضَيْنَا فِي كُلِّ مَدِينَةٍ عَلَى الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ وَالأَطْفَالِ، فَلَمْ يَنْجُ حَيٌّ مِنْهُمْ. 35 وَلَكِنَّ الْبَهَائِمَ وَالأَسْلابَ الَّتِي نَهَبْنَاهَا مِنَ الْمُدُنِ أَخَذْنَاهَا غَنَائِمَ لأَنْفُسِنَا. 36 وَلَمْ تَمْتَنِعْ عَلَيْنَا قَرْيَةٌ ابْتِدَاءً مِنْ عَرُوعِيرَ الْوَاقِعَةِ عَلَى حَافَةِ وَادِي أَرْنُونَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ الْقَائِمَةِ فِيهِ، إِلَى جِلْعَادَ، إِذْ حَقَّقَ الرَّبُّ إِلَهُنَا لَنَا النَّصْرَ عَلَى جَمِيعِهَا. 37 وَلَكِنَّنَا لَمْ نَقْتَرِبْ مِنْ أَرْضِ الْعَمُّونِيِّينَ، وَلا نَاحِيَةِ وَادِي نَهْرِ يَبُّوقَ، وَلا الْمُدُنِ الْجَبَلِيَّةِ طَاعَةً لأَمْرِ الرَّبِّ إِلَهِنَا.

Wanderings in the wilderness

1 Then we turned back and set out towards the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea,^[1] as the Lord had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir. 2 Then the Lord said to me, 3 ‘You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north. 4 Give the people these orders: “You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful. 5 Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own. 6 You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.” ’ 7 The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything. 8 So we went on past our relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber, and travelled along the desert road of Moab. 9 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.’ 10 (The Emites used to live there – a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. 11 Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites, but the Moabites called them Emites. 12 Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land the Lord gave them as their possession.) 13 And the Lord said, ‘Now get up and cross the Zered Valley.’ So we crossed the valley. 14 Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them. 15 The Lord’s hand was against them until he had completely eliminated them from the camp. 16 Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died, 17 the Lord said to me, 18 ‘Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar. 19 When you come to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to war, for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.’ 20 (That too was considered a land of the Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. 21 They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. The Lord destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place. 22 The Lord had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. 23 And as for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor^[2] destroyed them and settled in their place.)

Defeat of Sihon king of Heshbon

24 ‘Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle. 25 This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’ 26 From the Desert of Kedemoth I sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon offering peace and saying, 27 ‘Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28 Sell us food to eat and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot – 29 as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us – until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.’ 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the Lord your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to give him into your hands, as he has now done. 31 The Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.’ 32 When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz, 33 the Lord our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army. 34 At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed^[3] them – men, women and children. We left no survivors. 35 But the livestock and the plunder from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. 36 From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead, not one town was too strong for us. The Lord our God gave us all of them. 37 But in accordance with the command of the Lord our God, you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites, neither the land along the course of the Jabbok nor that around the towns in the hills.
