1Muitos já se dedicaram a elaborar um relato dos fatos que se cumpriram[1] entre nós,2conforme nos foram transmitidos por aqueles que desde o início foram testemunhas oculares e servos da palavra.3Eu mesmo investiguei tudo cuidadosamente, desde o começo, e decidi escrever-te um relato ordenado, ó excelentíssimo Teófilo,4para que tenhas a certeza das coisas que te foram ensinadas.
O Nascimento de João Batista é Predito
5No tempo de Herodes, rei da Judeia, havia um sacerdote chamado Zacarias, que pertencia ao grupo sacerdotal de Abias; Isabel, sua mulher, também era descendente de Arão.6Ambos eram justos aos olhos de Deus, obedecendo de modo irrepreensível a todos os mandamentos e preceitos do Senhor.7Mas eles não tinham filhos, porque Isabel era estéril; e ambos eram de idade avançada.8Certa vez, estando de serviço o seu grupo, Zacarias estava servindo como sacerdote diante de Deus.9Ele foi escolhido por sorteio, de acordo com o costume do sacerdócio, para entrar no santuário do Senhor e oferecer incenso.10Chegando a hora de oferecer incenso, o povo todo estava orando do lado de fora.11Então um anjo do Senhor apareceu a Zacarias, à direita do altar do incenso.12Quando Zacarias o viu, perturbou-se e foi dominado pelo medo.13Mas o anjo lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, Zacarias; sua oração foi ouvida. Isabel, sua mulher, dará a você um filho, e você lhe dará o nome de João.14Ele será motivo de prazer e de alegria para você, e muitos se alegrarão por causa do nascimento dele,15pois será grande aos olhos do Senhor. Ele nunca tomará vinho nem bebida fermentada, e será cheio do Espírito Santo desde antes do seu nascimento[2].16Fará retornar muitos dentre o povo de Israel ao Senhor, o seu Deus.17E irá adiante do Senhor, no espírito e no poder de Elias, para fazer voltar o coração dos pais a seus filhos e os desobedientes à sabedoria dos justos, para deixar um povo preparado para o Senhor”.18Zacarias perguntou ao anjo: “Como posso ter certeza disso? Sou velho, e minha mulher é de idade avançada”.19O anjo respondeu: “Sou Gabriel, o que está sempre na presença de Deus. Fui enviado para transmitir a você estas boas-novas.20Agora você ficará mudo. Não poderá falar até o dia em que isso acontecer, porque não acreditou em minhas palavras, que se cumprirão no tempo oportuno”.21Enquanto isso, o povo esperava por Zacarias, estranhando sua demora no santuário.22Quando saiu, não conseguia falar nada; o povo percebeu então que ele tivera uma visão no santuário. Zacarias fazia sinais para eles, mas permanecia mudo.23Quando se completou seu período de serviço, ele voltou para casa.24Depois disso, Isabel, sua mulher, engravidou e durante cinco meses não saiu de casa.25E ela dizia: “Isto é obra do Senhor! Agora ele olhou para mim favoravelmente, para desfazer a minha humilhação perante o povo”.
O Nascimento de Jesus é Predito
26No sexto mês Deus enviou o anjo Gabriel a Nazaré, cidade da Galileia,27a uma virgem prometida em casamento a certo homem chamado José, descendente de Davi. O nome da virgem era Maria.28O anjo, aproximando-se dela, disse: “Alegre-se, agraciada! O Senhor está com você!”29Maria ficou perturbada com essas palavras, pensando no que poderia significar esta saudação.30Mas o anjo lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, Maria; você foi agraciada por Deus!31Você ficará grávida e dará à luz um filho, e lhe porá o nome de Jesus.32Ele será grande e será chamado Filho do Altíssimo. O Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de seu pai Davi,33e ele reinará para sempre sobre o povo de Jacó; seu Reino jamais terá fim”.34Perguntou Maria ao anjo: “Como acontecerá isso se sou virgem?”35O anjo respondeu: “O Espírito Santo virá sobre você, e o poder do Altíssimo a cobrirá com a sua sombra. Assim, aquele que há de nascer será chamado Santo, Filho de Deus.[3]36Também Isabel, sua parenta, terá um filho na velhice; aquela que diziam ser estéril já está em seu sexto mês de gestação.37Pois nada é impossível para Deus”.38Respondeu Maria: “Sou serva do Senhor; que aconteça comigo conforme a tua palavra”. Então o anjo a deixou.
Maria Visita Isabel
39Naqueles dias, Maria preparou-se e foi depressa para uma cidade da região montanhosa da Judeia,40onde entrou na casa de Zacarias e saudou Isabel.41Quando Isabel ouviu a saudação de Maria, o bebê agitou-se em seu ventre, e Isabel ficou cheia do Espírito Santo.42Em alta voz exclamou: “Bendita é você entre as mulheres, e bendito é o filho que você dará à luz!43Mas por que sou tão agraciada, ao ponto de me visitar a mãe do meu Senhor?44Logo que a sua saudação chegou aos meus ouvidos, o bebê que está em meu ventre agitou-se de alegria.45Feliz é aquela que creu que se cumprirá aquilo que o Senhor lhe disse!”
O Cântico de Maria
46Então disse Maria: “Minha alma engrandece ao Senhor,47e o meu espírito se alegra em Deus, meu Salvador,48pois atentou para a humildade da sua serva. De agora em diante, todas as gerações me chamarão bem-aventurada,49pois o Poderoso fez grandes coisas em meu favor; santo é o seu nome.50A sua misericórdia estende-se aos que o temem, de geração em geração.51Ele realizou poderosos feitos com seu braço; dispersou os que são soberbos no mais íntimo do coração.52Derrubou governantes dos seus tronos, mas exaltou os humildes.53Encheu de coisas boas os famintos, mas despediu de mãos vazias os ricos.54Ajudou a seu servo Israel, lembrando-se da sua misericórdia55para com Abraão e seus descendentes para sempre, como dissera aos nossos antepassados”.56Maria ficou com Isabel cerca de três meses e depois voltou para casa.
O Nascimento de João Batista
57Ao se completar o tempo de Isabel dar à luz, ela teve um filho.58Seus vizinhos e parentes ouviram falar da grande misericórdia que o Senhor lhe havia demonstrado e se alegraram com ela.59No oitavo dia foram circuncidar o menino e queriam dar-lhe o nome do pai, Zacarias;60mas sua mãe tomou a palavra e disse: “Não! Ele será chamado João”.61Disseram-lhe: “Você não tem nenhum parente com esse nome”.62Então fizeram sinais ao pai do menino, para saber como queria que a criança se chamasse.63Ele pediu uma tabuinha e, para admiração de todos, escreveu: “O nome dele é João”.64Imediatamente sua boca se abriu, sua língua se soltou e ele começou a falar, louvando a Deus.65Todos os vizinhos ficaram cheios de temor, e por toda a região montanhosa da Judeia se falava sobre essas coisas.66Todos os que ouviam falar disso se perguntavam: “O que vai ser este menino?” Pois a mão do Senhor estava com ele.
O Cântico de Zacarias
67Seu pai, Zacarias, foi cheio do Espírito Santo e profetizou:68“Louvado seja o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, porque visitou e redimiu o seu povo.69Ele promoveu poderosa salvação[4] para nós, na linhagem do seu servo Davi,70(como falara pelos seus santos profetas, na antiguidade),71salvando-nos dos nossos inimigos e da mão de todos os que nos odeiam,72para mostrar sua misericórdia aos nossos antepassados e lembrar sua santa aliança,73o juramento que fez ao nosso pai Abraão:74resgatar-nos da mão dos nossos inimigos para o servirmos sem medo,75em santidade e justiça, diante dele todos os nossos dias.76“E você, menino, será chamado profeta do Altíssimo, pois irá adiante do Senhor, para lhe preparar o caminho,77para dar ao seu povo o conhecimento da salvação, mediante o perdão dos seus pecados,78por causa das ternas misericórdias de nosso Deus, pelas quais do alto nos visitará o sol nascente,79para brilhar sobre aqueles que estão vivendo nas trevas e na sombra da morte, e guiar nossos pés no caminho da paz”.80E o menino crescia e se fortalecia em espírito; e viveu no deserto, até aparecer publicamente a Israel.
5In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah,[1] of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. (1 Cr 24:10; Mt 2:1; Lc 1:8)6And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. (Lc 2:25; At 23:1; At 24:16; Fp 2:15; Fp 3:6; 1 Ts 2:10; 1 Ts 3:13; 1 Ts 5:23)7But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. (Ex 30:7; 1 Sm 2:28; 1 Cr 23:13; 2 Cr 29:11; Lc 1:21; Hb 9:2; Ap 11:2; Ap 11:19)10And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. (Ex 30:1; Ex 40:26)12And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. (At 19:17)13But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. (Lc 1:9)22And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. (2 Rs 11:5; 1 Cr 9:25; 2 Cr 23:8; Lc 1:8; Hb 10:11)24After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying,25“Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.” (Gn 30:23; 1 Sm 1:6; Sl 113:9; Is 4:1)
Birth of Jesus Foretold
26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, (Mt 2:23; Lc 1:19)27to a virgin betrothed[2] to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. (Mt 1:16; Mt 1:18; Mt 1:20; Lc 2:4)28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”[3] (Jz 6:12; Sl 45:2; Dn 9:23)29But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. (Lc 1:12)30And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. (At 7:46)31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. (Is 7:14; Mt 1:21; Mt 1:25; Lc 2:21)32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, (2 Sm 7:11; 2 Sm 7:16; Sl 89:4; Sl 132:11; Is 9:6; Is 16:5; Mt 1:1; Mc 5:7; Lc 1:69; Lc 1:76; Lc 6:35; At 2:30; At 7:48; Ap 3:7)33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (Dn 2:44; Dn 7:14; Dn 7:18; Dn 7:27; Jo 12:34; Hb 1:8; Ap 11:15)34And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”[4]35And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born[5] will be called holy—the Son of God. Mary Visits Elizabeth
39In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, (Js 20:7; Js 21:11; Lc 1:65)40and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.41And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, (Lc 1:15; Lc 1:67)42and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (Dt 28:4; Jz 5:24; Sl 127:3)43And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Lc 2:11; Lc 20:42; Jo 20:28)44For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.45And blessed is she who believed that there would be[7] a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Lc 1:20; Jo 20:29)
57Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son.58And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. (Gn 19:19)59And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, (Gn 17:12; Lv 12:3; Lc 2:21; Fp 3:5)60but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.” (Lc 1:13)61And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.”62And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. (Lc 1:22)63And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. (Is 8:1; Is 30:8; Lc 1:60)64And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. (Mc 7:35; Lc 1:20; Lc 2:28; Lc 24:53)65And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea, (Lc 1:39; Lc 7:16)66and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him.
