1Vivía en Cesarea un centurión llamado Cornelio, del regimiento conocido como el Italiano.2Él y toda su familia eran devotos y temerosos de Dios. Realizaba muchas obras de beneficencia para el pueblo de Israel y oraba a Dios constantemente.3Un día, como a las tres de la tarde,[1] tuvo una visión. Vio claramente a un ángel de Dios que se le acercaba y le decía: —¡Cornelio!4—¿Qué quieres, Señor? —le preguntó Cornelio, mirándolo fijamente y con mucho miedo. —Dios ha recibido tus oraciones y tus obras de beneficencia como una ofrenda —le contestó el ángel—.5Envía de inmediato a algunos hombres a Jope para que hagan venir a un tal Simón, apodado Pedro.6Él se hospeda con Simón el curtidor, que tiene su casa junto al mar.7Después de que se fue el ángel que le había hablado, Cornelio llamó a dos de sus siervos y a un soldado devoto de los que le servían regularmente.8Les explicó todo lo que había sucedido y los envió a Jope.
La visión de Pedro
9Al día siguiente, mientras ellos iban de camino y se acercaban a la ciudad, Pedro subió a la azotea a orar. Era casi el mediodía.[2]10Tuvo hambre y quiso algo de comer. Mientras se lo preparaban, le sobrevino un éxtasis.11Vio el cielo abierto y algo parecido a una gran sábana que, suspendida por las cuatro puntas, descendía hacia la tierra.12En ella había toda clase de cuadrúpedos, como también reptiles y aves.13—Levántate, Pedro; mata y come —le dijo una voz.14—¡De ninguna manera, Señor! —replicó Pedro—. Jamás he comido nada impuro o inmundo.15Por segunda vez le insistió la voz: —Lo que Dios ha purificado, tú no lo llames impuro.16Esto sucedió tres veces, y en seguida la sábana fue recogida al cielo.17Pedro no atinaba a explicarse cuál podría ser el significado de la visión. Mientras tanto, los hombres enviados por Cornelio, que estaban preguntando por la casa de Simón, se presentaron a la puerta.18Llamando, averiguaron si allí se hospedaba Simón, apodado Pedro.19Mientras Pedro seguía reflexionando sobre el significado de la visión, el Espíritu le dijo: «Mira, Simón, tres[3]hombres te buscan.20Date prisa, baja y no dudes en ir con ellos, porque yo los he enviado.»21Pedro bajó y les dijo a los hombres: —Aquí estoy; yo soy el que ustedes buscan. ¿Qué asunto los ha traído por acá?22Ellos le contestaron: —Venimos de parte del centurión Cornelio, un hombre justo y temeroso de Dios, respetado por todo el pueblo judío. Un ángel de Dios le dio instrucciones de invitarlo a usted a su casa para escuchar lo que usted tiene que decirle.23Entonces Pedro los invitó a pasar y los hospedó. Al día siguiente, Pedro se fue con ellos acompañado de algunos creyentes de Jope.
Pedro en casa de Cornelio
24Un día después llegó a Cesarea. Cornelio estaba esperándolo con los parientes y amigos íntimos que había reunido.25Al llegar Pedro a la casa, Cornelio salió a recibirlo y, postrándose delante de él, le rindió homenaje.26Pero Pedro hizo que se levantara, y le dijo: —Ponte de pie, que sólo soy un hombre como tú.27Pedro entró en la casa conversando con él, y encontró a muchos reunidos.28Entonces les habló así: —Ustedes saben muy bien que nuestra ley prohíbe que un judío se junte con un extranjero o lo visite. Pero Dios me ha hecho ver que a nadie debo llamar impuro o inmundo.29Por eso, cuando mandaron por mí, vine sin poner ninguna objeción. Ahora permítanme preguntarles: ¿para qué me hicieron venir?30Cornelio contestó: —Hace cuatro días a esta misma hora, las tres de la tarde, estaba yo en casa orando.[4] De repente apareció delante de mí un hombre vestido con ropa brillante,31y me dijo: “Cornelio, Dios ha oído tu oración y se ha acordado de tus obras de beneficencia.32Por lo tanto, envía a alguien a Jope para hacer venir a Simón, apodado Pedro, que se hospeda en casa de Simón el curtidor, junto al mar.”33Así que inmediatamente mandé a llamarte, y tú has tenido la bondad de venir. Ahora estamos todos aquí, en la presencia de Dios, para escuchar todo lo que el Señor te ha encomendado que nos digas.34Pedro tomó la palabra, y dijo: —Ahora comprendo que en realidad para Dios no hay favoritismos,35sino que en toda nación él ve con agrado a los que le temen y actúan con justicia.36Dios envió su mensaje al pueblo de Israel, anunciando las buenas nuevas de la paz por medio de Jesucristo, que es el Señor de todos.37Ustedes conocen este mensaje que se difundió por toda Judea, comenzando desde Galilea, después del bautismo que predicó Juan.38Me refiero a Jesús de Nazaret: cómo lo ungió Dios con el Espíritu Santo y con poder, y cómo anduvo haciendo el bien y sanando a todos los que estaban oprimidos por el diablo, porque Dios estaba con él.39Nosotros somos testigos de todo lo que hizo en la tierra de los judíos y en Jerusalén. Lo mataron, colgándolo de un madero,40pero Dios lo resucitó al tercer día y dispuso que se apareciera,41no a todo el pueblo, sino a nosotros, testigos previamente escogidos por Dios, que comimos y bebimos con él después de su resurrección.42Él nos mandó a predicar al pueblo y a dar solemne testimonio de que ha sido nombrado por Dios como juez de vivos y muertos.43De él dan testimonio todos los profetas, que todo el que cree en él recibe, por medio de su nombre, el perdón de los pecados.44Mientras Pedro estaba todavía hablando, el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre todos los que escuchaban el mensaje.45Los defensores de la circuncisión que habían llegado con Pedro se quedaron asombrados de que el don del Espíritu Santo se hubiera derramado también sobre los gentiles,46pues los oían hablar en lenguas y alabar a Dios. Entonces Pedro respondió:47—¿Acaso puede alguien negar el agua para que sean bautizados estos que han recibido el Espíritu Santo lo mismo que nosotros?48Y mandó que fueran bautizados en el nombre de Jesucristo. Entonces le pidieron que se quedara con ellos algunos días.

(Hch 10:22; Hch 13:16; Hch 13:26)3About the ninth hour of the day[1] he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.” (Hch 3:1; Hch 8:26; Hch 10:17; Hch 10:19)4And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. (Sal 141:2; Dn 10:12; Mt 26:13; Mr 14:9; Hch 10:31; Heb 6:10; Ap 8:4)5And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter.6He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.” (Hch 9:43)7When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him,8and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
Peter’s Vision
9The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour[2] to pray. (1 S 9:25; 2 R 23:12; Sal 55:17; Jer 19:13; Jer 32:29; Sof 1:5; Hch 11:5)10And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance (Hch 22:17)11and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. (Jn 1:51)12In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air.13And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”14But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” (Lv 11:2; Lv 20:25; Dt 14:4; Ez 4:14; Dn 1:8; Hch 10:28)15And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.” (Mt 15:11; Mr 7:15; Mr 7:19; Ro 14:2; Ro 14:14; Ro 14:20; 1 Co 10:25; 1 Ti 4:4; Tit 1:15)16This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.17Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood at the gate (Hch 10:3; Hch 10:7)18and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there.19And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you. (Hch 8:29; Hch 10:17)20Rise and go down and accompany them without hesitation,[3] for I have sent them.” (Hch 15:7)21And Peter went down to the men and said, “I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming?”22And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say.” (Mr 8:38; Hch 10:2; Hch 11:14)23So he invited them in to be his guests. The next day he rose and went away with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. (Jn 21:23; Hch 10:45; Hch 11:12)24And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.25When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. (Dn 2:46; Mt 8:2; Hch 16:29)26But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am a man.” (Hch 14:15; Ap 19:10; Ap 22:8)27And as he talked with him, he went in and found many persons gathered.28And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean. (Jn 4:9; Jn 18:28; Hch 10:14; Hch 10:35; Hch 11:3; Gl 2:12)29So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me.”30And Cornelius said, “Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour,[4] and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing (Hch 1:10; Hch 3:1; Hch 10:9; Hch 10:23)31and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. (Hch 10:4)32Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’33So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”
44While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. (Hch 2:4; Hch 11:15; Hch 15:8; 1 Ts 1:5)45And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. (Hch 2:17; Hch 2:38; Hch 10:23; Hch 11:2)46For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, (Mr 16:17)47“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” (Hch 2:4; Hch 8:36; Hch 11:17; Hch 15:8)48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. (Hch 2:38; Hch 8:12; Hch 8:16; 1 Co 1:14)
