1DOMNUL a cercetat‑o pe Sara, după cum a zis; DOMNUL a făcut pentru Sara ceea ce promisese.2Sara a rămas însărcinată și i‑a născut lui Avraam un fiu la bătrânețe, la vremea hotărâtă, despre care îi vorbise Dumnezeu.3Avraam i‑a pus numele Isaac[1] fiului său nou‑născut, pe care i‑l născuse Sara.4Avraam l‑a circumcis pe fiul său Isaac, la vârsta de opt zile, așa cum i‑a poruncit Dumnezeu.5Avraam avea o sută de ani când s‑a născut fiul său Isaac.6Sara a zis: „Dumnezeu m‑a făcut să râd și oricine va auzi despre acest lucru va râde împreună cu mine.“7Apoi a zis: „Cine i‑ar fi spus lui Avraam că Sara va alăpta copii? Totuși, i‑am născut un fiu la bătrânețe.“
Agar și Ismael sunt alungați în pustie
8Copilul a crescut și a fost înțărcat. În ziua în care Isaac a fost înțărcat, Avraam a dat un ospăț mare.9Dar Sara l‑a văzut râzând[2] pe fiul egiptencei Agar, pe care aceasta i‑l născuse lui Avraam,10și i‑a zis lui Avraam: „Alung‑o pe această roabă și pe fiul ei, căci fiul acestei roabe nu va moșteni împreună cu fiul meu, cu Isaac!“11Lucrul acesta nu i‑a plăcut deloc lui Avraam,[3] deoarece îl avea în vedere pe fiul său.12Dar Dumnezeu i‑a zis lui Avraam: „Să nu fii tulburat[4] din cauza băiatului și a roabei tale. Ascult‑o pe Sara în tot ce îți spune, pentru că prin Isaac își va primi numele sămânța[5] ta. (Gen 12:7)13Cât despre fiul roabei tale, îl voi face și pe el un neam, pentru că este sămânța ta.“14Avraam s‑a sculat dis‑de‑dimineață, a luat niște pâine și un burduf cu apă și i le‑a dat lui Agar, punându‑i‑le pe umăr; i‑a dat și copilul și a trimis‑o. Ea a plecat și a rătăcit în pustia Beer-Șeba.15Când apa din burduf s‑a terminat, a aruncat copilul sub unul dintre tufișuri16și apoi s‑a dus și a șezut singură la depărtare, cam până unde zboară o săgeată trasă de arc, căci își zicea: „Să nu văd moartea copilului.“ Și, șezând la depărtare, și‑a ridicat glasul și a plâns.17Dar Dumnezeu a auzit glasul băiatului. Îngerul lui Dumnezeu a strigat din ceruri către Agar și i‑a zis: „Ce se întâmplă, Agar? Nu te teme, pentru că Dumnezeu a auzit glasul băiatului din locul în care este.18Scoală‑te, ridică băiatul și ține‑l de mână, pentru că voi face din el un neam mare.“19Apoi Dumnezeu i‑a deschis ochii, iar ea a văzut o fântână cu apă. S‑a dus, a umplut burduful cu apă și i‑a dat băiatului să bea.20Dumnezeu a fost cu băiatul, iar el a crescut, a locuit în pustie și a ajuns arcaș.21A locuit în pustia Paran, iar mama lui i‑a luat o soție din țara Egiptului.
Legământul dintre Avraam și Abimelek
22În vremea aceea, Abimelek, împreună cu Pihol, comandantul oștirii sale, i‑au vorbit lui Avraam, zicând: – Dumnezeu este cu tine în tot ceea ce faci.23Jură‑mi acum pe Dumnezeu că nu mă vei trăda nici pe mine, nici pe copiii mei, nici pe descendenții mei, ci, așa cum eu am arătat îndurare față de tine, tot așa vei arăta și tu față de mine și față de țara în care locuiești ca străin.24Avraam i‑a răspuns: – Jur!25Dar Avraam i s‑a plâns lui Abimelek cu privire la o fântână cu apă, pe care robii acestuia o luaseră cu forța.26Abimelek i‑a răspuns: „Nu știu cine a făcut acest lucru. Tu nu mi‑ai spus, iar eu nu am auzit despre aceasta decât astăzi.“27Atunci Avraam a luat oi și vite și i le‑a dat lui Abimelek. Apoi cei doi au încheiat un legământ.28Avraam a pus deoparte șapte mielușele din turmă.29Abimelek l‑a întrebat pe Avraam: – Ce este cu aceste șapte mielușele pe care le‑ai pus deoparte?30Avraam i‑a răspuns: – Primește aceste șapte mielușele ca pe o mărturie din partea mea că eu am săpat această fântână.31De aceea locul acela a fost numit Beer-Șeba[6], pentru că amândoi au depus acolo un jurământ.32După ce au încheiat legământul la Beer-Șeba, Abimelek și Pihol, comandantul oștirii sale, s‑au ridicat și s‑au întors în țara filistenilor.33Avraam a plantat un tamarisc în Beer-Șeba și a chemat acolo Numele DOMNULUI, Dumnezeul cel Veșnic[7].34El a locuit ca străin în țara filistenilor multă vreme.

(Gen 17:10; Gen 17:12; Fapte 7:8)5Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. (Gen 17:1; Gen 17:17; Ro 4:19)6And Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.” (Is 54:1; Gal 4:27)7And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” (Gen 18:11)
God Protects Hagar and Ishmael
8And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.9But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, laughing.[2] (Gen 16:1; Gen 16:15; Gal 4:29)10So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.” (Gal 4:30)11And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son.12But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named. (Ro 9:7; Ev 11:18)13And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.” (Gen 16:10; Gen 17:20; Gen 21:18)14So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. (Gen 21:31)15When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes.16Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, “Let me not look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.17And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.18Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”19Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. (Num 22:31; 2 Re 6:17; 2 Re 6:20; Lu 24:16; Lu 24:31)20And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow. (Gen 16:12)21He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
A Treaty with Abimelech
22At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do. (Gen 20:2; Gen 26:1; Gen 26:26; Gen 26:28)23Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants or with my posterity, but as I have dealt kindly with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned.” (Gen 20:14)24And Abraham said, “I will swear.”25When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech’s servants had seized, (Gen 26:15; Gen 26:18; Gen 26:20)26Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, and I have not heard of it until today.”27So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant. (Gen 26:31)28Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart.29And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?”30He said, “These seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand, that this[3] may be a witness for me that I dug this well.”31Therefore that place was called Beersheba,[4] because there both of them swore an oath. (Gen 26:33)32So they made a covenant at Beersheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God. (Gen 4:26; Gen 12:8; Ps 90:2; Is 40:28)34And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.
