1Era un om cu renume din Beniamin, al cărui nume era Chiș. El era fiul lui Abiel, fiul lui Țeror, fiul lui Behorat, fiul lui Afiah, un beniamit.2Omul acesta avea un fiu, al cărui nume era Saul, un tânăr chipeș și fără egal printre fiii lui Israel. Era mai înalt cu un cap decât toți ceilalți din popor.3Într‑o zi, măgărițele lui Chiș, tatăl lui Saul, s‑au pierdut. Atunci Chiș i‑a zis fiului său, Saul: „Ia cu tine, te rog, pe unul dintre slujitori și duceți‑vă să căutați măgărițele!“4Au traversat muntele lui Efraim și regiunea Șalișa fără să le găsească. După aceea, au traversat și regiunea Șaalim, însă tot nu le‑au găsit. Apoi au traversat și teritoriul lui Beniamin fără a le găsi.5Când au ajuns în regiunea Țuf, Saul i‑a zis slujitorului său, care era cu el: – Haide să ne întoarcem, ca nu cumva tatăl meu să fie îngrijorat mai degrabă pentru noi, decât pentru măgărițe!6Dar acesta i‑a zis: – Iată! În cetatea aceasta se află un om al lui Dumnezeu, un om respectat; tot ceea ce spune el, sigur se împlinește. Să mergem acolo acum și poate ne va spune pe ce drum să o luăm.7Saul i‑a răspuns slujitorului său: – Dar dacă mergem, ce să‑i ducem acelui om? Pâinea din sacii noștri s‑a terminat și nu avem niciun dar pentru omul lui Dumnezeu. Deci ce avem?8Slujitorul i‑a zis din nou lui Saul: – Iată, am găsit la mine un sfert de șechel[1] de argint. Îl voi da omului lui Dumnezeu ca să ne spună pe ce drum să mergem. (1 Sam 2:36)9Pe vremuri, în Israel, omul care mergea să‑L întrebe pe Dumnezeu zicea că merge la văzător. Căci cel care se numește astăzi profet, atunci se numea văzător.10Saul i‑a răspuns slujitorului său: – Bine ai spus! Hai să mergem! Astfel au intrat în cetatea în care se afla omul lui Dumnezeu.11În timp ce urcau dealul spre cetate, au întâlnit niște fete care ieșeau să scoată apă. Ei le‑au întrebat: – Este aici văzătorul?12Ele le‑au răspuns și au zis: – Iată, este în fața voastră! Acum deci grăbiți‑vă, căci a sosit în cetate chiar astăzi, deoarece poporul aduce o jertfă pe înălțime.13De îndată ce veți intra în cetate, îl veți găsi chiar înainte să se urce pe înălțime ca să mănânce. Căci poporul nu mănâncă până nu vine el, fiindcă el trebuie să binecuvânteze jertfa, și doar după aceea cei poftiți mănâncă. Suiți‑vă chiar acum și‑l veți găsi.14Ei s‑au suit în cetate. Cum au intrat în cetate, iată că Samuel venea înspre ei, urcând către locul înalt.15DOMNUL Se descoperise lui Samuel cu o zi înainte ca Saul să vină și‑i spusese:16„Mâine, cam pe timpul acesta, am să trimit la tine un bărbat din teritoriul lui Beniamin. Să‑l ungi drept conducător peste poporul Meu, Israel. El va izbăvi poporul Meu din mâna filistenilor. Voi face aceasta fiindcă am privit spre poporul Meu, căci strigătul lui a ajuns până la Mine.“17Când Samuel l‑a văzut pe Saul, DOMNUL i‑a zis: „Iată bărbatul despre care ți‑am vorbit! El va domni peste poporul Meu!“18Saul s‑a apropiat de Samuel în dreptul porții și i‑a zis: – Spune‑mi, te rog, unde se află casa văzătorului?19Samuel i‑a răspuns: – Eu sunt văzătorul. Urcă înaintea mea pe înălțime, căci astăzi vei mânca împreună cu mine. Dimineață te voi lăsa să pleci și‑ți voi spune tot ceea ce se află în inima ta.20În ceea ce privește măgărițele pe care le‑ai pierdut cu trei zile în urmă, nu pune la inimă pierderea lor, căci au fost găsite. Însă către cine este îndreptată toată dorința lui Israel, dacă nu către tine și către întreaga ta familie?21Dar Saul i‑a răspuns: – Nu sunt eu oare un beniamit, din cea mai mică seminție din Israel? Și clanul meu nu este cel mai neînsemnat dintre toate clanurile seminției lui Beniamin? De ce îmi vorbești în felul acesta?22Atunci Samuel l‑a luat pe Saul și pe slujitorul său, i‑a dus în sală[2] și i‑a așezat în fruntea celor poftiți, vreo treizeci de oameni.23Samuel i‑a zis bucătarului: – Adu bucata de carne pe care ți‑am dat‑o și despre care ți‑am spus s‑o pui deoparte!24Bucătarul a luat coapsa cu ce era pe ea și a așezat‑o înaintea lui Saul. Samuel a zis: – Iată, aceasta a fost păstrată pentru tine. Mănâncă, pentru că am pus‑o deoparte pentru tine de când am chemat poporul. În ziua aceea, Saul a mâncat împreună cu Samuel.25După aceea au coborât de pe înălțime în cetate, iar Samuel a stat de vorbă cu Saul pe acoperiș.26S‑au sculat dis‑de‑dimineață, o dată cu ivirea zorilor, iar Samuel l‑a chemat pe Saul pe acoperiș, zicând: – Ridică‑te, căci urmează să te trimit acasă. Saul s‑a ridicat și au ieșit afară amândoi, el și Samuel.27În timp ce coborau spre marginea cetății, Samuel i‑a zis lui Saul: – Spune‑i slujitorului să treacă înaintea noastră. Și acesta a trecut înainte. Apoi Samuel a zis: – Oprește‑te acum, ca să auzi de la mine Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu.
1There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth. (1 Sam 14:51; 1 Cro 8:33; 1 Cro 9:39)2And he had a son whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people. (1 Sam 8:16; 1 Sam 10:23)3Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. So Kish said to Saul his son, “Take one of the young men with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.”4And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. And they passed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they passed through the land of Benjamin, but did not find them. (Ios 24:33; 2 Re 4:42)5When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant[1] who was with him, “Come, let us go back, lest my father cease to care about the donkeys and become anxious about us.” (1 Sam 10:2)6But he said to him, “Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor; all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go.” (Deut 33:1; Jud 13:6; 1 Sam 3:19; 1 Re 13:1)7Then Saul said to his servant, “But if we go, what can we bring the man? For the bread in our sacks is gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” (1 Re 14:3; 2 Re 4:42; 2 Re 8:8)8The servant answered Saul again, “Here, I have with me a quarter of a shekel[2] of silver, and I will give it to the man of God to tell us our way.”9(Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for today’s “prophet” was formerly called a seer.) (Gen 25:22)10And Saul said to his servant, “Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.11As they went up the hill to the city, they met young women coming out to draw water and said to them, “Is the seer here?” (Gen 24:11)12They answered, “He is; behold, he is just ahead of you. Hurry. He has come just now to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on the high place. (Gen 31:54; 1 Sam 10:5; 1 Sam 16:2; 1 Sam 20:29; 1 Re 3:2)13As soon as you enter the city you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat till he comes, since he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now go up, for you will meet him immediately.”14So they went up to the city. As they were entering the city, they saw Samuel coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.15Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel: (Rut 4:4; 1 Sam 15:1; Fapte 13:21)16“Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince[3] over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen[4] my people, because their cry has come to me.” (Ex 2:25; Ex 3:7; Ex 3:9; 1 Sam 10:1)17When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.” (1 Sam 16:12)18Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, “Tell me where is the house of the seer?”19Samuel answered Saul, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me, and in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is on your mind.20As for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father’s house?” (1 Sam 9:3)21Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel? And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way?” (Jud 6:15; Jud 20:46; Jud 21:6; 1 Sam 15:17; Ps 68:27)22Then Samuel took Saul and his young man and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited, who were about thirty persons.23And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Put it aside.’”24So the cook took up the leg and what was on it and set them before Saul. And Samuel said, “See, what was kept is set before you. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed, that you might eat with the guests.”[5] So Saul ate with Samuel that day. (Ex 29:22; Ex 29:27; Lev 7:32; Ez 24:4)25And when they came down from the high place into the city, a bed was spread for Saul on the roof, and he lay down to sleep.[6] (Deut 22:8; 2 Sam 11:2; 2 Sam 16:22; Ne 8:16; Mat 24:17; Fapte 10:9)26Then at the break of dawn[7] Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Up, that I may send you on your way.” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went out into the street.27As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to pass on before us, and when he has passed on, stop here yourself for a while, that I may make known to you the word of God.”
