1Поскольку уже многие принялись составлять описание произошедших среди нас событий2на основе сведений, переданных нам людьми, которые с самого начала были очевидцами и служителями Слова,3то и я решил, тщательно исследовав все от начала, описать тебе, достопочтеннейший Феофил, все по порядку,4чтобы ты мог убедиться в достоверности того, чему был научен.
Ангел предвозвещает Захарии рождение Иоанна
5Во время правления Ирода[1], царя Иудеи, был священник по имени Захария, из смены Авия[2]. Его жена тоже была потомком Аарона, ее звали Елизавета. (1Пар 24:1)6Оба они были праведны перед Богом, живя непорочно и строго соблюдая все заповеди и установления Господа.7Но у них не было детей, потому что Елизавета была бесплодна. Они оба были уже в преклонном возрасте.8Однажды, когда была очередь служить смене, к которой принадлежал Захария, он нес службу перед Богом.9В соответствии с установленным для священников порядком ему выпало по жребию войти в храм Господа и возжигать благовония[3]. (Исх 30:6)10Во время возжигания благовоний множество народа молилось снаружи.11Захарии же явился ангел Господа. Он стоял справа от жертвенника, где возжигались благовония.12Когда Захария увидел его, он был чрезвычайно поражен и испуган.13Ангел сказал ему: – Не бойся, Захария, твоя молитва услышана. Твоя жена Елизавета родит тебе сына, и ты назовешь его Иоанном.14Твое сердце наполнится счастьем и ликованием, и многие будут радоваться его рождению,15потому что он будет великим перед Господом. Он никогда не будет пить вина и других хмельных напитков. От самого рождения он будет исполнен Святым Духом.16Многих израильтян он обратит к Господу, их Богу.17Он будет предшествовать Ему в духе и силе Илии, чтобы обратить сердца отцов к детям, а непокорных – к мудрости праведных, приготовляя народ к приходу Господа[4]. (Мал 4:5)18Захария спросил ангела: – Как мне узнать, что это сбудется? Ведь я уже стар, и жена моя в преклонных годах.19Ангел ответил: – Я – Гавриил, стоящий перед Богом, и я послан, чтобы сообщить тебе эту радостную весть.20Но сейчас за то, что ты не поверил моим словам, которые обязательно исполнятся в свое время, ты лишишься дара речи и не будешь говорить до того дня, пока это не сбудется.21Между тем люди ждали Захарию и удивлялись, почему он так долго не выходит из храма.22Когда Захария вышел, он не мог говорить и вынужден был общаться с ними жестами. Все поняли, что в храме ему было видение.23Когда срок его служения закончился, Захария возвратился домой.24Вскоре его жена Елизавета забеременела и пять месяцев не выходила из дома[5].25Она говорила: – Вот что сделал для меня Господь, по милости Своей сняв с меня позор перед людьми!
Предсказание о рождении Иисуса
26Когда Елизавета была на шестом месяце беременности, Бог послал ангела Гавриила в галилейский город Назарет,27к деве по имени Мария[6]. Мария была обручена с Иосифом, потомком Давида. (Лк 1:41)28Ангел пришел к ней и сказал: – Приветствую тебя, получившая милость! С тобой Господь!29Марию эти слова очень удивили, и она размышляла, что бы значило такое приветствие.30Ангел продолжал: – Не бойся, Мария, потому что Бог проявил к тебе милость!31Ты забеременеешь и родишь Сына, и назовешь Его Иисусом[7].32Он станет великим, и Его будут называть Сыном Всевышнего. Господь Бог даст Ему престол Его предка Давида,33и Он будет царствовать над домом Иакова вовеки, и Его Царству не будет конца.34– Как это может быть? – спросила Мария. – Ведь я еще не была с мужчиной.35Ангел ответил: – Святой Дух сойдет на тебя, и тебя осенит сила Всевышнего. Поэтому Ребенок, Который родится у тебя, будет свят – Он будет зваться Сыном Бога.36Вот и твоя родственница Елизавета тоже родит сына в ее преклонные годы. О ней говорили, что она бесплодна, но она уже на шестом месяце беременности.37Для Бога нет ничего невозможного.38– Я готова служить Господу, – ответила Мария, – пусть все произойдет со мной так, как ты сказал. И ангел оставил ее.
Мария навещает Елизавету
39Вскоре после этого Мария собралась и поспешила в город, расположенный в нагорьях Иудеи.40Она вошла в дом Захарии и поприветствовала Елизавету.41Когда Елизавета услышала приветствие Марии, ребенок внутри у нее встрепенулся; Елизавету наполнил Святой Дух,42и она громким голосом воскликнула: – Благословенна ты среди женщин, и благословен Ребенок, Которого ты носишь!43Чем я заслужила такую милость, что ко мне пришла мать моего Господа?44Как только я услышала твое приветствие, ребенок во мне так и встрепенулся от радости.45Блаженна поверившая в исполнение того, что сказал Господь!46Мария ответила: – Душа моя славит Господа,47и дух мой радуется о Боге, Спасителе моем,48потому что Он увидел смирение Своей служанки[8]. Отныне все поколения будут называть меня благословенной, (1Цар 1:11; 1Цар 2:1)49потому что Всемогущий совершил такое великое дело для меня! Его имя свято![9] (Пс 110:9)50Из поколения в поколение Он проявляет милость к боящимся Его![10] (Пс 102:17)51Его рукой совершены великие дела: Он рассеял гордых в надмении сердца их,52сверг правителей с их престолов и возвысил смиренных!53Он насытил благами голодных, а богатых отослал ни с чем.54Он помог Своему слуге Израилю, помня Свое обещание нашим предкам –55быть милосердным к Аврааму и его семени вовеки.56Мария погостила у Елизаветы около трех месяцев и затем возвратилась домой.
Рождение, наречение имени и обрезание Иоанна Крестителя
57Когда подошло время, Елизавета родила сына.58Ее соседи и родственники услышали о том, что Бог явил ей великую милость, и радовались вместе с ней.59На восьмой день[11] они пришли, чтобы совершить над ребенком обряд обрезания, и хотели назвать его в честь отца Захарией. (Быт 17:12)60Но мать ребенка возразила: – Нет! Его будут звать Иоанном.61Ей стали говорить: – Но ведь среди ваших родственников нет никого с таким именем!62Они стали жестами спрашивать отца, как бы он хотел назвать сына.63Захария попросил табличку для письма и, к удивлению всех, написал: «Его имя Иоанн».64В тот же миг к нему вернулась речь, и он начал говорить, прославляя Бога.65Всех соседей объял страх, и весть о случившемся разнеслась по всем нагорьям Иудеи.66Все, кто слышал об этом, с удивлением спрашивали: – Кем же станет этот ребенок? – потому что рука Господа была с ним.
Пророческое слово Захарии
67Святой Дух наполнил Захарию, отца Иоанна, и он начал пророчествовать:68– Благословен Господь, Бог Израиля[12], Который посетил Свой народ и искупил его! (Пс 40:14; Пс 71:18; Пс 105:48)69Он воздвиг нам рог спасения[13] из дома Своего слуги Давида, (1Цар 2:10; Пс 17:3; Иер 48:25; Мих 4:13)70как Он издавна обещал через Своих святых пророков,71что Он спасет нас от врагов и от рук тех, кто ненавидит нас.72Так Он проявил милость к нашим предкам, помня Свой святой завет,73клятву, которой Он поклялся нашему предку Аврааму:74избавить нас от рук наших врагов, чтобы мы могли без страха служить Ему,75живя перед Ним в святости и праведности во все дни нашей жизни!76И ты, дитя, будешь назван пророком Всевышнего, потому что будешь идти перед Господом, чтобы приготовить Ему пути[14], (Ис 40:3; Мал 3:1)77возвестить Его народу спасение через прощение грехов,78по глубочайшему милосердию нашего Бога, Который пошлет нам Утреннюю Зарю с небес,79чтобы дать свет живущим во тьме и тени смертной[15] и направить наши стопы на путь мира! (Ис 9:2)80Ребенок рос и укреплялся в духе. Он жил в пустыне до того времени, когда открыто явился Израилю.

The coming birth of John the Baptist
5Herod was king of Judea. During the time he was ruling, there was a priest named Zechariah. He belonged to a group of priests named after Abijah. His wife Elizabeth also came from the family line of Aaron.6Both of them did what was right in the sight of God. They obeyed all the Lord’s commands and rules faithfully.7But they had no children, because Elizabeth was not able to have any. And they were both very old.8One day Zechariah’s group was on duty. He was serving as a priest in God’s temple.9He happened to be chosen, in the usual way, to go into the temple of the Lord. There he was supposed to burn incense.10The time came for this to be done. All who had gathered to worship were praying outside.11Then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah. The angel was standing at the right side of the incense altar.12When Zechariah saw him, he was amazed and terrified.13But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will have a child. It will be a boy, and you must call him John.14He will be a joy and delight to you. His birth will make many people very glad.15He will be important in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or other such drinks. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.16He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.17And he will prepare the way for the Lord. He will have the same spirit and power that Elijah had. He will bring peace between parents and their children. He will teach people who don’t obey to be wise and do what is right. In this way, he will prepare a people who are ready for the Lord.’18Zechariah asked the angel, ‘How can I be sure of this? I am an old man, and my wife is old too.’19The angel said to him, ‘I am Gabriel. I serve God. I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.20And now you will have to be silent. You will not be able to speak until after John is born. That’s because you did not believe my words. They will come true at the time God has chosen.’21During that time, the people were waiting for Zechariah to come out of the temple. They wondered why he stayed there so long.22When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realised he had seen a vision in the temple. They knew this because he kept gesturing to them. He still could not speak.23When his time of service was over, he returned home.24After that, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant. She stayed at home for five months.25‘The Lord has done this for me,’ she said. ‘In these days, he has been kind to me. He has taken away my shame among the people.’
The coming birth of Jesus
26In the sixth month after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee.27He was sent to a virgin. The girl was engaged to a man named Joseph. He came from the family line of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.28The angel greeted her and said, ‘The Lord has blessed you in a special way. He is with you.’29Mary was very upset because of his words. She wondered what kind of greeting this could be.30But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary. God is very pleased with you.31You will become pregnant and give birth to a son. You must call him Jesus.32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king like his father David of long ago.33The Son of the Most High God will rule for ever over his people. They are from the family line of Jacob. That kingdom will never end.’34‘How can this happen?’ Mary asked the angel. ‘I am a virgin.’35The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come to you. The power of the Most High God will cover you. So the holy one that is born will be called the Son of God.36Your relative Elizabeth will have a child even though she is old. People thought she could not have children. But she has been pregnant for six months now.37That’s because what God says will always come true.’38‘I serve the Lord,’ Mary answered. ‘May it happen to me just as you said it would.’ Then the angel left her.
Mary visits Elizabeth
39At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in Judea’s hill country.40There she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby inside her jumped. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.42In a loud voice she called out, ‘God has blessed you more than other women. And blessed is the child you will have!43But why is God so kind to me? Why has the mother of my Lord come to me?44As soon as I heard the sound of your voice, the baby inside me jumped for joy.45You are a woman God has blessed. You have believed that the Lord would keep his promises to you!’
Mary’s song
46Mary said, ‘My soul gives glory to the Lord.47My spirit delights in God my Saviour.48He has taken note of me even though I am not considered important. From now on all people will call me blessed.49The Mighty One has done great things for me. His name is holy.50He shows his mercy to those who have respect for him, from parent to child down through the years.51He has done mighty things with his powerful arm. He has scattered those who are proud in their deepest thoughts.52He has brought down rulers from their thrones. But he has lifted up people who are not considered important.53He has filled with good things those who are hungry. But he has sent away empty those who are rich.54He has helped the people of Israel, who serve him. He has always remembered to be kind55to Abraham and his children down through the years. He has done it just as he promised to our people of long ago.’56Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months. Then she returned home.
John the Baptist is born
57The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby. She gave birth to a son.58Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had been very kind to her. They shared her joy.59On the eighth day, they came to have the child circumcised. They were going to name him Zechariah, like his father.60But his mother spoke up. ‘No!’ she said. ‘He must be called John.’61They said to her, ‘No one among your relatives has that name.’62Then they motioned to his father. They wanted to find out what he would like to name the child.63He asked for something to write on. Then he wrote, ‘His name is John.’ Everyone was amazed.64Right away Zechariah could speak again. Right away he praised God.65All his neighbours were filled with fear and wonder. Throughout Judea’s hill country, people were talking about all these things.66Everyone who heard this wondered about it. And because the Lord was with John, they asked, ‘What is this child going to be?’
Zechariah’s song
67John’s father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit. He prophesied,68‘Give praise to the Lord, the God of Israel! He has come to his people and purchased their freedom.69He has acted with great power and has saved us. He did it for those who are from the family line of his servant David.70Long ago holy prophets said he would do it.71He has saved us from our enemies. We are rescued from all who hate us.72He has been kind to our people of long ago. He has remembered his holy covenant.73He made a promise to our father Abraham.74He promised to save us from our enemies. Then we could serve him without fear.75He wants us to be holy and godly as long as we live.76‘And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare the way for him.77You will tell his people how they can be saved. You will tell them that their sins can be forgiven.78All of that will happen because our God is tender and caring. His kindness will bring the rising sun to us from heaven.79It will shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death. It will guide our feet on the path of peace.’80The child grew up, and his spirit became strong. He lived in the desert until he appeared openly to Israel.
