1Il Signore apparve ad Abraamo alle querce di Mamre, mentre egli sedeva all’ingresso della sua tenda nell’ora più calda del giorno.2Abraamo alzò gli occhi e vide che tre uomini stavano davanti a lui. Come li ebbe visti, corse loro incontro dall’ingresso della tenda, si prostrò fino a terra e disse:3«Ti prego, mio Signore, se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, non passare oltre senza fermarti dal tuo servo!4Lasciate che si porti un po’ d’acqua, lavatevi i piedi e riposatevi sotto quest’albero.5Io andrò a prendere del pane e vi ristorerete; poi continuerete il vostro cammino; poiché è per questo che siete passati dal vostro servo». Quelli dissero: «Fa’ pure come hai detto».6Allora Abraamo andò in fretta nella tenda da Sara e le disse: «Prendi subito tre misure di fior di farina, impastala e fa’ delle focacce».7Poi Abraamo corse alla mandria, prese un vitello tenero e buono e lo diede a un suo servo, il quale si affrettò a prepararlo.8Prese del burro, del latte e il vitello che era stato preparato, e li pose davanti a loro. Egli se ne stette in piedi presso di loro, sotto l’albero, e quelli mangiarono.9Poi essi gli dissero: «Dov’è Sara, tua moglie?» Ed egli rispose: «È là nella tenda».10E l’altro: «Tornerò certamente da te fra un anno; allora Sara, tua moglie, avrà un figlio». Sara intanto stava ad ascoltare all’ingresso della tenda, che era dietro di lui.11Abraamo e Sara erano vecchi, ben avanti negli anni, e Sara non aveva più i corsi ordinari delle donne.12Sara rise dentro di sé, dicendo: «Vecchia come sono, dovrei avere tali piaceri? Anche il mio signore è vecchio!»13Il Signore disse ad Abraamo: «Perché mai ha riso Sara, dicendo: “Partorirei io per davvero, vecchia come sono?”14Vi è forse qualcosa che sia troppo difficile per il Signore? Al tempo fissato, l’anno prossimo, tornerò e Sara avrà un figlio».15Allora Sara negò, dicendo: «Non ho riso»; perché ebbe paura. Ma egli disse: «Invece hai riso!»
Intercessione di Abraamo in favore di Sodoma
16Poi quegli uomini si alzarono e volsero gli sguardi verso Sodoma; e Abraamo andò con loro per congedarli.17Il Signore disse: «Dovrei forse nascondere ad Abraamo quanto sto per fare,18dato che Abraamo deve diventare una nazione grande e potente e in lui saranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra?19Infatti, io l’ho prescelto perché ordini ai suoi figli, e alla sua casa dopo di lui, che seguano la via del Signore per praticare la giustizia e il diritto, affinché il Signore compia in favore di Abraamo quello che gli ha promesso».20Il Signore disse: «Siccome il grido che sale da Sodoma e Gomorra è grande e siccome il loro peccato è molto grave,21io scenderò e vedrò se hanno veramente agito secondo il grido che è giunto fino a me; e, se così non è, lo saprò».22Quegli uomini partirono di là e si avviarono verso Sodoma; ma Abraamo rimase ancora davanti al Signore.23Abraamo gli si avvicinò e disse: «Farai dunque perire il giusto insieme con l’empio?24Forse ci sono cinquanta giusti nella città; davvero farai perire anche quelli? Non perdonerai a quel luogo per amore dei cinquanta giusti che vi sono?25Non sia mai che tu faccia una cosa simile! Far morire il giusto con l’empio, in modo che il giusto sia trattato come l’empio! Non sia mai! Il giudice di tutta la terra non farà forse giustizia?»26Il Signore disse: «Se trovo nella città di Sodoma cinquanta giusti, perdonerò a tutto il luogo per amor di loro».27Abraamo riprese e disse: «Ecco, prendo l’ardire di parlare al Signore, benché io non sia che polvere e cenere.28Forse, a quei cinquanta giusti ne mancheranno cinque; distruggerai tutta la città per cinque di meno?» E il Signore: «Se ve ne trovo quarantacinque, non la distruggerò».29Abraamo continuò a parlargli e disse: «Forse se ne troveranno quaranta». E il Signore: «Non lo farò, per amore dei quaranta».30Abraamo disse: «Non si adiri il Signore e io parlerò. Forse se ne troveranno trenta». E il Signore: «Non lo farò, se ne trovo trenta».31Abraamo disse: «Ecco, prendo l’ardire di parlare al Signore. Forse se ne troveranno venti». E il Signore: «Non la distruggerò per amore di venti».32Abraamo disse: «Non si adiri il Signore, e io parlerò ancora questa volta soltanto. Forse se ne troveranno dieci». Wozu seid ihr sonst bei eurem Diener vorbeigekommen?“ – „Tu, was du vorhast“, sagten die Männer.6Da eilte Abraham zu Sara ins Zelt und rief: „Schnell, drei Maß[1] vom feinsten Mehl! Mach Teig und back Fladenbrot!“[2]7Er lief weiter zum Vieh, suchte ein schönes, zartes Kalb heraus und befahl dem jungen Mann dort, es schnell zuzubereiten.8Dann holte er saure und süße Milch, nahm das gekochte Fleisch und setzte alles seinen Gästen vor. Während sie aßen, stand er unter dem Baum und bediente sie.9Dann fragten sie ihn: „Wo ist deine Frau Sara?“ – „Da im Zelt“, erwiderte er.10Da sagte Jahwe: „Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu dir, dann wird deine Frau Sara einen Sohn haben.“[3] Sara lauschte am Zelteingang, der sich gerade hinter ihm befand. Und mein Eheherr ist ja auch alt.“ (1P 3,6)13Da sagte Jahwe zu Abraham: „Warum hat Sara denn gelacht und denkt: 'Soll ich alte Frau wirklich noch Mutter werden können?'14Sollte für Jahwe denn irgendetwas unmöglich sein? Nächstes Jahr, zur genannten Zeit, komme ich wieder, dann hat Sara einen Sohn.“15„Ich habe doch nicht gelacht“, leugnete Sara, denn sie hatte Angst bekommen. Aber er sagte: „Doch, du hast gelacht.“
Abraham bittet für Sodom
16Dann brachen die Männer auf. Abraham begleitete sie. Als sie die Ebene von Sodom unter sich liegen sahen,17sagte Jahwe ‹zu sich›: „Soll ich Abraham verheimlichen, was ich vorhabe?18Er soll doch der Vater eines großen und mächtigen Volkes werden, und durch ihn sollen alle Völker der Erde Segen empfangen.[4] (Gen 12,3; Ga 3,8)19Denn mit ihm habe ich Verbindung aufgenommen, damit er seinen Söhnen und seinen weiteren Nachkommen aufträgt, den Geboten Jahwes zu folgen, das Recht zu achten und Gerechtigkeit zu üben. So kann Jahwe auch seine Zusage an ihn einlösen.“20Dann sagte Jahwe ‹zu Abraham›: „Schwere Klagen sind über Sodom und Gomorra zu mir gedrungen. Ihre Sünde ist offenbar gewaltig groß.21Darum will ich hinabsteigen und sehen, ob ihr Tun wirklich dem Schreien entspricht, das zu mir gedrungen ist. Ich will wissen, ob es so ist oder nicht.“22Da wandten sich die Männer ab und gingen nach Sodom, während Jahwe noch bei Abraham stehen blieb.23Abraham trat dicht heran und sagte: „Willst du wirklich die Gerechten mit den Gottlosen beseitigen?24Vielleicht gibt es 50 Gerechte in der Stadt. Willst du die mit umkommen lassen und den Ort nicht wegen der 50 verschonen?25Du kannst doch die Gerechten nicht mit den Gottlosen töten, die einen doch nicht genauso wie die anderen behandeln! Nein, das kannst du nicht tun! Hält sich der Richter der ganzen Welt denn nicht selber ans Recht?“26„Wenn ich 50 Gerechte in der Stadt finde“, erwiderte Jahwe, „werde ich ihretwegen dem ganzen Ort vergeben.“27Da nahm Abraham wieder das Wort: „Ich habe mich nun einmal vorgewagt, zu meinem Herrn zu reden, obwohl ich nur Staub und Asche bin.28Vielleicht fehlen an den 50 Gerechten nur fünf. Willst du wegen dieser fünf die ganze Stadt vernichten?“ – „Nein, ich werde sie nicht vernichten, wenn ich 45 dort finde“, erwiderte er.29Abraham fuhr fort: „Und wenn es nur 40 sind?“ – „Dann verschone ich sie wegen der 40“, erwiderte er.30„Bitte, mein Herr“, sagte Abraham, „werde nicht zornig, wenn ich weiterrede! Vielleicht finden sich nur 30.“ – „Dann verschone ich sie wegen der 30.“31Da fing er wieder an: „Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, zu meinem Herrn zu reden: Vielleicht finden sich 20 dort.“ – „Auch wenn es nur 20 sind, vernichte ich sie nicht.“32„Bitte, werde nicht zornig, Herr!“, sagte Abraham. „Ich will nur noch einmal reden: Vielleicht findet man auch nur zehn.“ – „Ich verschone sie auch wegen der zehn“, antwortete Jahwe.33Dann brach er das Gespräch ab und ging weg. Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
22So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. (Gen 18,1; Gen 18,16; Gen 19,1; Sal 106,23; Ger 18,20)23Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? (Gen 20,4; Nu 16,22; 2Sam 24,17)24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it?25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.”31He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.”32Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. El año que viene volveré a visitarte en esta fecha, y para entonces Sara habrá tenido un hijo.15Sara, por su parte, tuvo miedo y mintió al decirle: —Yo no me estaba riendo. Pero el Señor le replicó: —Sí te reíste.
Abraham intercede en favor de Sodoma
16Luego aquellos visitantes se levantaron y partieron de allí en dirección a Sodoma. Abraham los acompañó para despedirlos.17Pero el Señor estaba pensando: «¿Le ocultaré a Abraham lo que estoy por hacer?18Es un hecho que Abraham se convertirá en una nación grande y poderosa, y en él serán bendecidas todas las naciones de la tierra.19Yo lo he elegido para que instruya a sus hijos y a su familia, a fin de que se mantengan en el camino del Señor y pongan en práctica lo que es justo y recto. Así el Señor cumplirá lo que le ha prometido.»20Entonces el Señor le dijo a Abraham: —El clamor contra Sodoma y Gomorra resulta ya insoportable, y su pecado es gravísimo.21Por eso bajaré, a ver si realmente sus acciones son tan malas como el clamor contra ellas me lo indica; y si no, he de saberlo.22Dos de los visitantes partieron de allí y se encaminaron a Sodoma, pero Abraham se quedó de pie frente al Señor.23Entonces se acercó al Señor y le dijo: —¿De veras vas a exterminar al justo junto con el malvado?24Quizá haya cincuenta justos en la ciudad. ¿Exterminarás a todos, y no perdonarás a ese lugar por amor a los cincuenta justos que allí hay?25¡Lejos de ti el hacer tal cosa! ¿Matar al justo junto con el malvado, y que ambos sean tratados de la misma manera? ¡Jamás hagas tal cosa! Tú, que eres el Juez de toda la tierra, ¿no harás justicia?26El Señor le respondió: —Si encuentro cincuenta justos en Sodoma, por ellos perdonaré a toda la ciudad.27Abraham le dijo: —Reconozco que he sido muy atrevido al dirigirme a mi Señor, yo, que apenas soy polvo y ceniza.28Pero tal vez falten cinco justos para completar los cincuenta. ¿Destruirás a toda la ciudad si faltan esos cinco? —Si encuentro cuarenta y cinco justos no la destruiré —contestó el Señor.29Pero Abraham insistió: —Tal vez se encuentren sólo cuarenta. —Por esos cuarenta justos, no destruiré la ciudad —respondió el Señor.30Abraham volvió a insistir: —No se enoje mi Señor, pero permítame seguir hablando. Tal vez se encuentren sólo treinta. —No lo haré si encuentro allí a esos treinta —contestó el Señor.31Abraham siguió insistiendo: —Sé que he sido muy atrevido en hablarle así a mi Señor, pero tal vez se encuentren sólo veinte. —Por esos veinte no la destruiré.32Abraham volvió a decir: —No se enoje mi Señor, pero permítame hablar una vez más. Tal vez se encuentren sólo diez... —Aun por esos diez no la destruiré —respondió el Señor por última vez.33Cuando el Señor terminó de hablar con Abraham, se fue de allí, y Abraham regresó a su carpa.
