1Ogni persona stia sottomessa alle autorità superiori; perché non vi è autorità se non da Dio, e quelle che esistono sono stabilite da Dio.2Perciò chi resiste all’autorità si oppone all’ordine di Dio; quelli che vi si oppongono si attireranno addosso una condanna;3infatti i magistrati non sono da temere per le opere buone, ma per le cattive. Tu, non vuoi temere l’autorità? Fa’ il bene e avrai la sua approvazione,4perché il magistrato è un ministro di Dio per il tuo bene; ma se fai il male, temi, perché egli non porta la spada[1] invano; infatti è un ministro di Dio per infliggere una giusta punizione a chi fa il male.5Perciò è necessario stare sottomessi, non soltanto per timore della punizione, ma anche per motivo di coscienza.6È anche per questa ragione che voi pagate le imposte, perché essi, che sono costantemente dediti a questa funzione, sono ministri di Dio.7Rendete a ciascuno quel che gli è dovuto: l’imposta a chi è dovuta l’imposta, la tassa a chi la tassa; il timore a chi il timore, l’onore a chi l’onore.
Amore del prossimo
8Non abbiate altro debito con nessuno, se non di amarvi gli uni gli altri; perché chi ama il prossimo ha adempiuto la legge.9Infatti il «non commettere adulterio», «non uccidere», «non rubare», «non concupire»[2] e qualsiasi altro comandamento si riassumono in questa parola: «Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso»[3].10L’amore non fa nessun male al prossimo; l’amore quindi è l’adempimento della legge.
Vigilanza nella vita cristiana
11E questo dobbiamo fare, consci del momento cruciale: è ora ormai che vi svegliate dal sonno, perché adesso la salvezza ci è più vicina di quando credemmo.12La notte è avanzata, il giorno è vicino; gettiamo dunque via le opere delle tenebre e indossiamo le armi della luce.13Comportiamoci onestamente, come in pieno giorno, senza gozzoviglie e ubriachezze, senza immoralità e dissolutezza, senza contese e gelosie;14ma rivestitevi del Signore Gesù Cristo e non abbiate cura della carne per soddisfarne i desideri.

Die Liebe, des Gesetzes Erfüllung
8Seid niemandem etwas schuldig, außer dass ihr euch untereinander liebt; denn wer den andern liebt, der hat das Gesetz erfüllt. (Ga 5,14)9Denn was da gesagt ist: »Du sollst nicht ehebrechen; du sollst nicht töten; du sollst nicht stehlen; du sollst nicht begehren«, und was da sonst an Geboten ist, das wird in diesem Wort zusammengefasst: »Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst.« (Eso 20,13; Le 19,18)10Die Liebe tut dem Nächsten nichts Böses. So ist nun die Liebe des Gesetzes Erfüllung. (Mat 22,40; 1Co 13,4)
Leben im Licht des anbrechenden Tages
11Und das tut, weil ihr die Zeit erkannt habt, dass die Stunde da ist, aufzustehen vom Schlaf, denn unser Heil ist jetzt näher als zu der Zeit, da wir gläubig wurden. (Ef 5,14; 1Te 5,6)12Die Nacht ist vorgerückt, der Tag ist nahe herbeigekommen. So lasst uns ablegen die Werke der Finsternis und anlegen die Waffen des Lichts. (Ef 5,11; 1G 2,8)13Lasst uns ehrbar leben wie am Tage, nicht in Fressen und Saufen, nicht in Unzucht und Ausschweifung, nicht in Hader und Neid; (Lu 21,34; 1Co 3,3; Ef 5,18; 1Te 4,12)14sondern zieht an den Herrn Jesus Christus und sorgt für den Leib nicht so, dass ihr den Begierden verfallt. 1Todos deben someterse a las autoridades públicas, pues no hay autoridad que Dios no haya dispuesto, así que las que existen fueron establecidas por él.2Por lo tanto, todo el que se opone a la autoridad se rebela contra lo que Dios ha instituido. Los que así proceden recibirán castigo.3Porque los gobernantes no están para infundir terror a los que hacen lo bueno sino a los que hacen lo malo. ¿Quieres librarte del miedo a la autoridad? Haz lo bueno, y tendrás su aprobación,4pues está al servicio de Dios para tu bien. Pero si haces lo malo, entonces debes tener miedo. No en vano lleva la espada, pues está al servicio de Dios para impartir justicia y castigar al malhechor.5Así que es necesario someterse a las autoridades, no sólo para evitar el castigo sino también por razones de conciencia.6Por eso mismo pagan ustedes impuestos, pues las autoridades están al servicio de Dios, dedicadas precisamente a gobernar.7Paguen a cada uno lo que le corresponda: si deben impuestos, paguen los impuestos; si deben contribuciones, paguen las contribuciones; al que deban respeto, muéstrenle respeto; al que deban honor, ríndanle honor.
La responsabilidad hacia los demás
8No tengan deudas pendientes con nadie, a no ser la de amarse unos a otros. De hecho, quien ama al prójimo ha cumplido la ley.9Porque los mandamientos que dicen: «No cometas adulterio», «No mates», «No robes», «No codicies»,[1] y todos los demás mandamientos, se resumen en este precepto: «Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»10El amor no perjudica al prójimo. Así que el amor es el cumplimiento de la ley.11Hagan todo esto estando conscientes del tiempo en que vivimos. Ya es hora de que despierten del sueño, pues nuestra salvación está ahora más cerca que cuando inicialmente creímos.12La noche está muy avanzada y ya se acerca el día. Por eso, dejemos a un lado las obras de la oscuridad y pongámonos la armadura de la luz.13Vivamos decentemente, como a la luz del día, no en orgías y borracheras, ni en inmoralidad sexual y libertinaje, ni en disensiones y envidias.14Más bien, revístanse ustedes del Señor Jesucristo, y no se preocupen por satisfacer los deseos de la naturaleza pecaminosa.
