Secondo viaggio dei fratelli di Giuseppe in Egitto

1 Or la carestia era grave nel paese. 2 Quando ebbero finito di mangiare il grano che avevano portato dall’Egitto, il padre disse loro: «Tornate a comprare un po’ di viveri». 3 E Giuda rispose: «Quell’uomo ce lo dichiarò categoricamente: “Non vedrete la mia faccia se vostro fratello non sarà con voi”. 4 Se tu mandi nostro fratello con noi, scenderemo e ti compreremo dei viveri; 5 ma se non lo mandi non scenderemo, perché quell’uomo ci ha detto: “Non vedrete la mia faccia se vostro fratello non sarà con voi”». 6 Israele disse: «Perché mi avete fatto questo torto di dire a quell’uomo che avevate ancora un fratello?» 7 Quelli risposero: «Quell’uomo c’interrogò minuziosamente intorno a noi e al nostro parentado, dicendo: “Vostro padre vive ancora? Avete qualche altro fratello?” Noi gli rispondemmo secondo le sue domande. Non potevamo sapere che ci avrebbe detto: “Fate venire vostro fratello!”» 8 Giuda disse a suo padre Israele: «Lascia venire il ragazzo con me; ci leveremo e andremo, così vivremo e non moriremo: né noi, né tu, né i nostri piccini. 9 Io mi rendo garante di lui. Ridomandane conto alla mia mano. Se non te lo riconduco e non te lo rimetto davanti, io sarò per sempre colpevole verso di te. 10 Se non avessimo indugiato, a quest’ora saremmo già tornati due volte». 11 Allora Israele, loro padre, disse loro: «Se così è, fate questo: prendete nei vostri sacchi le cose più squisite di questo paese e portate a quell’uomo un dono: un po’ di balsamo, un po’ di miele, degli aromi e della mirra, dei pistacchi e delle mandorle. 12 Prendete con voi il doppio del denaro, e riportate il denaro che fu rimesso alla bocca dei vostri sacchi; forse fu un errore. 13 Prendete anche vostro fratello e andate, tornate da quell’uomo. 14 Dio onnipotente vi faccia trovare grazia davanti a quell’uomo, così che egli vi rilasci l’altro vostro fratello e Beniamino. Se devo essere privato dei miei figli, che io lo sia!» 15 Quelli presero dunque questo dono, presero con sé il doppio del denaro e Beniamino, e partirono; scesero in Egitto e si presentarono davanti a Giuseppe. 16 Come Giuseppe vide Beniamino con loro, disse al suo maggiordomo: «Conduci questi uomini in casa, macella e prepara tutto, perché questi uomini mangeranno con me a mezzogiorno». 17 L’uomo fece come Giuseppe aveva ordinato e li condusse in casa di Giuseppe. 18 E quelli ebbero paura, perché venivano condotti in casa di Giuseppe, e dissero: «Siamo portati qui a motivo di quel denaro che ci fu rimesso nei sacchi la prima volta; egli vuole darci addosso, piombare su di noi e prenderci come schiavi con i nostri asini». 19 Avvicinatisi al maggiordomo di Giuseppe, gli parlarono sulla porta della casa e dissero: 20 «Scusa, signor mio! Noi scendemmo già una prima volta a comprare dei viveri, 21 e avvenne che, quando fummo giunti al luogo dove pernottammo, aprimmo i sacchi, ed ecco, il denaro di ciascuno di noi era alla bocca del suo sacco: il nostro denaro del peso esatto; e l’abbiamo riportato con noi. 22 Ma abbiamo portato con noi altro denaro per comprare dei viveri. Non sappiamo chi abbia messo il nostro denaro nei nostri sacchi». 23 Egli disse: «Datevi pace, non temete; il vostro Dio e il Dio di vostro padre ha messo un tesoro nei vostri sacchi. Io ho avuto il vostro denaro». E, fatto uscire Simeone, lo condusse da loro. 24 Quell’uomo li fece entrare in casa di Giuseppe, diede loro dell’acqua ed essi si lavarono i piedi; ed egli diede del foraggio ai loro asini. 25 Poi essi prepararono il dono, aspettando che Giuseppe venisse a mezzogiorno; perché avevano sentito che sarebbero rimasti lì a mangiare. 26 Quando Giuseppe venne a casa, quelli gli porsero il dono che avevano portato con sé nella casa, e s’inchinarono fino a terra davanti a lui. 27 Egli domandò loro come stavano e disse: «Vostro padre, il vecchio di cui mi parlaste, sta bene? Vive ancora?» 28 Quelli risposero: «Nostro padre tuo servo sta bene, vive ancora». Poi s’inchinarono e gli fecero riverenza. 29 Giuseppe alzò gli occhi, vide Beniamino suo fratello, figlio di sua madre, e disse: «È questo il vostro fratello più giovane di cui mi avete parlato?» Poi disse a lui: «Dio ti sia propizio, figlio mio!» 30 E Giuseppe s’affrettò a uscire, perché si era commosso nell’intimo per suo fratello; cercava un luogo dove piangere. Entrò nella sua camera e pianse. 31 Poi si lavò la faccia e uscì, si fece forza e disse: «Portate il pranzo». 32 Fu dunque portato il cibo per lui a parte, per loro a parte e per gli Egiziani che mangiavano con loro a parte; perché gli Egiziani non possono mangiare con gli Ebrei; per gli Egiziani è cosa abominevole. 33 Ma essi sedevano di fronte a lui, dal primogenito, secondo il suo diritto di primogenitura, fino al più giovane secondo la sua età; e si guardavano l’un l’altro stupiti. 34 Giuseppe fece loro portare delle vivande che aveva davanti a sé; ma la porzione di Beniamino era cinque volte maggiore di quella d’ogni altro di loro. Bevvero e stettero allegri con lui.

1 Die Hungersnot aber drückte das Land. 2 Und als verzehrt war, was sie an Getreide aus Ägypten gebracht hatten, sprach ihr Vater zu ihnen: Zieht wieder hin und kauft uns ein wenig Getreide. 3 Da antwortete ihm Juda und sprach: Der Mann schärfte uns das hart ein und sprach: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, es sei denn euer Bruder mit euch. (Gen 42,15; Gen 42,34) 4 Willst du nun unsern Bruder mit uns senden, so wollen wir hinabziehen und dir zu essen kaufen. 5 Willst du ihn aber nicht senden, so ziehen wir nicht hinab. Denn der Mann hat zu uns gesagt: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, euer Bruder sei denn mit euch. 6 Israel sprach: Warum habt ihr so übel an mir getan, dass ihr dem Mann sagtet, dass ihr noch einen Bruder habt? 7 Sie antworteten: Der Mann forschte so genau nach uns und unserer Verwandtschaft und sprach: Lebt euer Vater noch? Habt ihr auch noch einen Bruder? Da antworteten wir ihm, wie er uns fragte. Wie konnten wir wissen, dass er sagen würde: Bringt euren Bruder mit herab? (Gen 42,7) 8 Da sprach Juda zu Israel, seinem Vater: Lass den Knaben mit mir ziehen, dass wir uns aufmachen und reisen und leben und nicht sterben, wir und du und unsere Kinder. 9 Ich will Bürge für ihn sein; von meiner Hand sollst du ihn fordern. Wenn ich ihn dir nicht wiederbringe und vor deine Augen stelle, so will ich mein Leben lang die Schuld tragen. 10 Denn wenn wir nicht gezögert hätten, wären wir wohl schon zweimal wiedergekommen. 11 Da sprach Israel, ihr Vater, zu ihnen: Wenn es denn so ist, wohlan, so tut’s und nehmt von des Landes besten Früchten in eure Säcke und bringt dem Manne Geschenke hinab, ein wenig Balsam und Honig, Harz und Myrrhe, Pistazien und Mandeln. (Prov 18,16) 12 Nehmt auch doppelt so viel Geld mit euch. Das Geld, das ihr obenauf in euren Säcken wiederbekommen habt, bringt wieder hin. Vielleicht ist da ein Irrtum geschehen. (Gen 42,27; Gen 42,35) 13 Dazu nehmt euren Bruder, macht euch auf und geht wieder zu dem Manne. 14 Aber der allmächtige Gott gebe euch Barmherzigkeit vor dem Manne, dass er mit euch ziehen lasse euren andern Bruder und Benjamin. Ich aber muss sein wie einer, der seiner Kinder ganz und gar beraubt ist. (Gen 42,36) 15 Da nahmen sie diese Geschenke und das doppelte Geld mit sich, dazu Benjamin, machten sich auf, zogen nach Ägypten und traten vor Josef. 16 Als Josef sie sah mit Benjamin, sprach er zu seinem Haushalter: Führe diese Männer ins Haus und schlachte und richte zu, denn sie sollen zu Mittag mit mir essen. 17 Und der Mann tat, wie ihm Josef gesagt hatte, und führte die Männer in Josefs Haus. 18 Sie fürchteten sich aber, weil sie in Josefs Haus geführt wurden, und sprachen: Wir sind hereingeführt um des Geldes willen, das wir in unsern Säcken das vorige Mal wiedergefunden haben; man will auf uns eindringen und über uns herfallen und uns zu Sklaven machen und uns die Esel nehmen. (Gen 42,28) 19 Darum traten sie zu Josefs Haushalter und redeten mit ihm vor der Haustür 20 und sprachen: Mein Herr, wir sind das vorige Mal herabgezogen, Getreide zu kaufen, 21 und als wir in die Herberge kamen und unsere Säcke auftaten, siehe, da war eines jeden Geld oben in seinem Sack mit vollem Gewicht. Darum haben wir’s wieder mit uns gebracht, 22 haben auch anderes Geld mit uns herabgebracht, Getreide zu kaufen. Wir wissen aber nicht, wer uns unser Geld in unsere Säcke gesteckt hat. 23 Er aber sprach: Seid guten Mutes, fürchtet euch nicht! Euer Gott und eures Vaters Gott hat euch einen Schatz gegeben in eure Säcke. Euer Geld habe ich erhalten. Und er führte Simeon zu ihnen heraus (Gen 42,24) 24 und brachte sie in Josefs Haus, gab ihnen Wasser, dass sie ihre Füße wuschen, und gab ihren Eseln Futter. 25 Sie aber richteten das Geschenk zu, bis Josef mittags käme; denn sie hatten gehört, dass sie dort essen sollten. 26 Als nun Josef ins Haus trat, brachten sie ihm das Geschenk ins Haus, das sie mitgebracht hatten, und fielen vor ihm nieder zur Erde. 27 Er aber grüßte sie freundlich und sprach: Geht es eurem alten Vater gut, von dem ihr mir sagtet? Lebt er noch? 28 Sie antworteten: Es geht deinem Knechte, unserm Vater, gut und er lebt noch. Und sie verneigten sich und fielen vor ihm nieder. (Gen 37,7; Gen 37,9) 29 Und er hob seine Augen auf und sah seinen Bruder Benjamin, seiner Mutter Sohn, und sprach: Ist das euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir sagtet? Und sprach weiter: Gott sei dir gnädig, mein Sohn! 30 Und Josef eilte hinaus; denn sein Herz entbrannte ihm für seinen Bruder, und er suchte, wo er weinen könnte, und ging in seine Kammer und weinte daselbst. 31 Und als er sein Angesicht gewaschen hatte, ging er heraus und hielt an sich und sprach: Legt die Speisen auf! 32 Und man trug ihm besonders auf und jenen auch besonders und den Ägyptern, die mit ihm aßen, auch besonders. Denn die Ägypter dürfen nicht essen mit den Hebräern; denn es ist ein Gräuel für sie. (Gen 39,6; Gen 46,34; Eso 8,22) 33 Und man setzte sie ihm gegenüber, den Erstgeborenen nach seiner Erstgeburt und den Jüngsten nach seiner Jugend. Darüber verwunderten sie sich untereinander. 34 Und man trug ihnen Essen auf von seinem Tisch, aber Benjamin bekam fünfmal mehr als die andern. Und sie tranken und wurden trunken mit ihm.

1 And the famine was sore in the land. 2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. 3 And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. 4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food: 5 But if thou wilt not send him , we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. 6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother? 7 And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down? 8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones. 9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever: 10 For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time. 11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds: 12 And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight: 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man: 14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children , I am bereaved. 15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph. 16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon. 17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph' house. 18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph' house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses. 19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph' house, and they communed with him at the door of the house, 20 And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food: 21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man' money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand. 22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks. 23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them. 24 And the man brought the men into Joseph' house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender. 25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth. 27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive? 28 And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance. 29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother' son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son. 30 And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. 31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. 32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another. 34 And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin' mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

Los hermanos de José vuelven a Egipto

1 El hambre seguía aumentando en aquel país. 2 Llegó el momento en que se les acabó el alimento que habían llevado de Egipto. Entonces su padre les dijo: —Vuelvan a Egipto y compren un poco más de alimento para nosotros. 3 Pero Judá le recordó: —Aquel hombre nos advirtió claramente que no nos presentáramos ante él, a menos que lo hiciéramos con nuestro hermano menor. 4 Si tú nos permites llevar a nuestro hermano menor, iremos a comprarte alimento. 5 De lo contrario, no tiene objeto que vayamos. Aquel hombre fue muy claro en cuanto a no presentarnos ante él sin nuestro hermano menor. 6 —¿Por qué me han causado este mal? —inquirió Israel—. ¿Por qué le dijeron a ese hombre que tenían otro hermano? 7 —Porque aquel hombre nos preguntó específicamente acerca de nuestra familia —respondieron ellos—. “¿Vive todavía el padre de ustedes? —nos preguntó—. ¿Tienen algún otro hermano?” Lo único que hicimos fue responder a sus preguntas. ¿Cómo íbamos a saber que nos pediría llevar a nuestro hermano menor? 8 Judá le dijo a su padre Israel: —Bajo mi responsabilidad, envía al muchacho y nos iremos ahora mismo, para que nosotros y nuestros hijos podamos seguir viviendo. 9 Yo te respondo por su seguridad; a mí me pedirás cuentas. Si no te lo devuelvo sano y salvo, yo seré el culpable ante ti para toda la vida. 10 Si no nos hubiéramos demorado tanto, ¡ya habríamos ido y vuelto dos veces! 11 Entonces Israel, su padre, les dijo: —Ya que no hay más remedio, hagan lo siguiente: Echen en sus costales los mejores productos de esta región, y llévenselos de regalo a ese hombre: un poco de bálsamo, un poco de miel, perfumes, mirra, nueces, almendras. 12 Lleven también el doble del dinero, pues deben devolver el que estaba en sus bolsas, ya que seguramente fue un error. 13 Vayan con su hermano menor y preséntense ante ese hombre. 14 ¡Que el Dios Todopoderoso permita que ese hombre les tenga compasión y deje libre a su otro hermano, y además vuelvan con Benjamín! En cuanto a mí, si he de perder a mis hijos, ¡qué le voy a hacer! ¡Los perderé! 15 Ellos tomaron los regalos, el doble del dinero, y a Benjamín, y emprendieron el viaje a Egipto. Allí se presentaron ante José. 16 Cuando éste vio a Benjamín con ellos, le dijo a su mayordomo: «Lleva a estos hombres a mi casa. Luego, mata un animal y prepáralo, pues estos hombres comerán conmigo al mediodía.» 17 El mayordomo cumplió la orden y los llevó a la casa de José. 18 Al ver ellos que los llevaban a la casa de José, se asustaron mucho y se dijeron: «Nos llevan por causa del dinero que se puso en nuestras bolsas la vez pasada. Ahora nos atacarán, nos acusarán, y hasta nos harán sus esclavos, con nuestros animales y todo.» 19 Entonces se acercaron al mayordomo de la casa de José, y antes de entrar le dijeron: 20 —Perdón, señor: nosotros ya vinimos antes para comprar alimento; 21 pero a nuestro regreso, cuando acampamos para pasar la noche, descubrimos que en cada una de nuestras bolsas estaba el dinero que habíamos pagado. ¡Pero lo hemos traído para devolverlo! 22 También hemos traído más dinero para comprar alimento. ¡No sabemos quién pudo haber puesto el dinero de vuelta en nuestras bolsas! 23 —Está bien, no tengan miedo —contestó aquel hombre—. El Dios de ustedes y de su padre habrá puesto ese tesoro en sus bolsas. A mí me consta que recibí el dinero que ustedes pagaron. El mayordomo les llevó a Simeón, 24 y a todos los hizo pasar a la casa de José. Allí les dio agua para que se lavaran los pies, y les dio de comer a sus asnos. 25 Ellos, por su parte, prepararon los regalos, mientras esperaban que José llegara al mediodía, pues habían oído que comerían allí. 26 Cuando José entró en su casa, le entregaron los regalos que le habían llevado, y rostro en tierra se postraron ante él. 27 José les preguntó cómo estaban, y añadió: —¿Cómo está su padre, el anciano del cual me hablaron? ¿Vive todavía? 28 —Nuestro padre, su siervo, se encuentra bien, y todavía vive —respondieron ellos. Y en seguida le hicieron una reverencia para honrarlo. 29 José miró a su alrededor y, al ver a Benjamín, su hermano de padre y madre, les preguntó: —¿Es éste su hermano menor, del cual me habían hablado? ¡Que Dios te guarde, hijo mío! 30 Conmovido por la presencia de su hermano, y no pudiendo contener el llanto, José salió de prisa. Entró en su habitación, y allí se echó a llorar desconsoladamente. 31 Después se lavó la cara y, ya más calmado, salió y ordenó: «¡Sirvan la comida!» 32 A José le sirvieron en un sector, a los hermanos en otro, y en otro más a los egipcios que comían con José. Los egipcios no comían con los hebreos porque, para los habitantes de Egipto, era una abominación. 33 Los hermanos de José estaban sentados frente a él, de mayor a menor, y unos a otros se miraban con asombro. 34 Las porciones les eran servidas desde la mesa de José, pero a Benjamín se le servían porciones mucho más grandes que a los demás. En compañía de José, todos bebieron y se alegraron.
