I fratelli di Giuseppe in Egitto

1 Giacobbe seppe che c’era grano in Egitto; allora disse ai suoi figli: «Perché state a guardarvi l’un l’altro?» 2 Poi disse: «Ecco, ho sentito dire che c’è grano in Egitto; scendete là a comprarne, così vivremo e non moriremo». 3 Così dieci dei fratelli di Giuseppe scesero in Egitto per comprarvi il grano. 4 Ma Giacobbe non mandò con loro Beniamino, il fratello di Giuseppe, perché diceva: «Che non gli succeda qualche disgrazia!» 5 I figli d’Israele giunsero per comprare grano in mezzo agli altri che erano venuti; perché nel paese di Canaan c’era la carestia. 6 Or Giuseppe era colui che comandava nel paese; era lui che vendeva il grano a tutta la gente del paese. I fratelli di Giuseppe vennero e s’inchinarono davanti a lui con la faccia a terra. 7 Giuseppe vide i suoi fratelli e li riconobbe, ma si comportò come un estraneo davanti a loro e parlò loro aspramente dicendo: «Da dove venite?» Essi risposero: «Dal paese di Canaan per comprare dei viveri». 8 Giuseppe riconobbe i suoi fratelli, ma essi non riconobbero lui. 9 Giuseppe si ricordò dei sogni che aveva avuto riguardo a loro e disse: «Voi siete delle spie! Siete venuti per vedere i luoghi indifesi del paese!» 10 Ed essi a lui: «No, mio signore, i tuoi servi sono venuti a comprare dei viveri. 11 Siamo tutti figli di uno stesso uomo. Siamo gente sincera. I tuoi servi non sono delle spie». 12 Ma egli disse: «No, siete venuti per vedere i luoghi indifesi del paese!» 13 Quelli risposero: «Noi, tuoi servi, siamo dodici fratelli, figli di uno stesso uomo, del paese di Canaan. Ecco, il più giovane è oggi con nostro padre, e uno non è più». 14 E Giuseppe disse loro: «La cosa è come vi ho detto, siete delle spie! 15 Ecco come sarete messi alla prova: per la vita del faraone, non uscirete di qui fin tanto che non sarà arrivato il vostro fratello più giovane. 16 Mandate uno di voi a prendere vostro fratello e voi resterete qui in carcere, perché le vostre parole siano messe alla prova e si veda se c’è del vero in voi; se no, per la vita del faraone, siete delle spie!» 17 E li mise assieme in prigione per tre giorni. 18 Il terzo giorno Giuseppe disse loro: «Fate questo e vivrete; io temo Dio! 19 Se siete gente sincera, uno di voi fratelli resti qui incatenato nella vostra prigione; e voi andate, portate il grano necessario alle vostre famiglie. 20 Poi conducetemi il vostro fratello più giovane; così le vostre parole saranno verificate e voi non morirete». Ed essi fecero così. 21 Allora si dicevano l’uno all’altro: «Sì, noi fummo colpevoli verso nostro fratello, giacché vedemmo la sua angoscia quando egli ci supplicava, ma non gli demmo ascolto! Ecco perché ci viene addosso quest’angoscia». 22 Ruben rispose loro: «Non ve lo dicevo io: “Non commettete questo peccato contro il ragazzo?” Ma voi non voleste darmi ascolto. Perciò, ecco, il suo sangue ci è ridomandato». 23 Ora essi non sapevano che Giuseppe li capiva, perché tra lui e loro c’era un interprete. 24 Ed egli si allontanò da loro, e pianse. Poi tornò, parlò con quelli e prese tra di loro Simeone, che fece incatenare sotto i loro occhi. 25 Poi Giuseppe ordinò che si riempissero di grano i loro sacchi, che si rimettesse il denaro di ciascuno nel suo sacco e che si dessero loro delle provviste per il viaggio. E così fu fatto. 26 Essi caricarono il loro grano sui loro asini e partirono. 27 Or uno di essi aprì il suo sacco per dare del foraggio al suo asino, nel luogo dove pernottavano, e vide il suo denaro alla bocca del sacco; 28 egli disse ai suoi fratelli: «Il mio denaro mi è stato restituito, eccolo qui nel mio sacco». Allora si sentirono mancare il cuore e, tremando, dicevano l’uno all’altro: «Che cos’è mai questo che Dio ci ha fatto?» 29 E giunsero da Giacobbe, loro padre, nel paese di Canaan e gli raccontarono tutto quello che era loro accaduto, dicendo: 30 «L’uomo che è il signore del paese ci ha parlato aspramente e ci ha trattati come spie del paese. 31 Noi gli abbiamo detto: “Siamo gente sincera; non siamo delle spie; 32 siamo dodici fratelli, figli di nostro padre; uno non è più, e il più giovane è oggi con nostro padre nel paese di Canaan”. 33 Quell’uomo, signore del paese, ci ha detto: “Da questo saprò se siete gente sincera: lasciate presso di me uno dei vostri fratelli, prendete quello che vi occorre per le vostre famiglie, partite e portatemi il vostro fratello più giovane. 34 Allora conoscerò che non siete delle spie, ma gente sincera: io vi renderò vostro fratello e voi potrete trafficare nel paese”». 35 Mentre essi vuotavano i loro sacchi, ecco che in ciascun sacco c’era il sacchetto con il denaro; essi e il padre loro videro i sacchetti con il loro denaro e furono presi da paura. 36 Giacobbe, loro padre, disse: «Voi mi avete privato dei miei figli! Giuseppe non è più, Simeone non è più, e mi volete togliere anche Beniamino! Tutte queste cose pesano su di me!» 37 Ruben disse a suo padre: «Se non te lo riconduco, fa’ morire i miei due figli! Affidalo a me, io te lo ricondurrò». 38 Giacobbe rispose: «Mio figlio non scenderà con voi, perché suo fratello è morto, e questo solo è rimasto; se gli succedesse qualche disgrazia durante il vostro viaggio, fareste scendere con tristezza i miei capelli bianchi nel soggiorno dei morti».

1 Als aber Jakob sah, dass Getreide in Ägypten zu haben war, sprach er zu seinen Söhnen: Was seht ihr euch lange an? 2 Siehe, ich höre, es sei in Ägypten Getreide zu haben; zieht hinab und kauft uns Getreide, dass wir leben und nicht sterben. 3 Da zogen hinab zehn Brüder Josefs, um in Ägypten Getreide zu kaufen. 4 Aber den Benjamin, Josefs Bruder, ließ Jakob nicht mit seinen Brüdern ziehen; denn er sprach: Es könnte ihm ein Unfall begegnen. 5 So kamen die Söhne Israels, Getreide zu kaufen, samt andern, die mit ihnen zogen; denn es war Hungersnot im Lande Kanaan. 6 Aber Josef war der Regent im Lande und verkaufte Getreide allem Volk im Lande. Als nun seine Brüder kamen, fielen sie vor ihm nieder zur Erde auf ihr Antlitz. 7 Und er sah sie an und erkannte sie, aber er stellte sich fremd gegen sie und redete hart mit ihnen und sprach zu ihnen: Woher kommt ihr? Sie sprachen: Aus dem Lande Kanaan, Getreide zu kaufen. 8 Aber wiewohl er sie erkannte, erkannten sie ihn doch nicht. 9 Und Josef dachte an die Träume, die er von ihnen geträumt hatte, und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr seid Kundschafter und seid gekommen, zu sehen, wo das Land offen ist. (Gen 37,5) 10 Sie antworteten ihm: Nein, mein Herr! Deine Knechte sind gekommen, Getreide zu kaufen. 11 Wir sind alle eines Mannes Söhne. Wir sind redlich. Deine Knechte sind keine Kundschafter. 12 Er sprach zu ihnen: Nein, sondern ihr seid gekommen, zu sehen, wo das Land offen ist. 13 Sie antworteten ihm: Wir, deine Knechte, sind zwölf Brüder, eines Mannes Söhne im Lande Kanaan, und der jüngste ist noch bei unserm Vater, und der eine ist nicht mehr. 14 Josef sprach zu ihnen: Es ist, wie ich euch gesagt habe: Kundschafter seid ihr. 15 Daran sollt ihr geprüft werden: So wahr der Pharao lebt – ihr sollt nicht von hier wegkommen, es komme denn her euer jüngster Bruder! 16 Sendet einen von euch hin, der euren Bruder hole, ihr aber sollt gefangen sein. Daran will ich prüfen eure Rede, ob ihr mit Wahrheit umgeht. Andernfalls – so wahr der Pharao lebt! – seid ihr Kundschafter! 17 Und er ließ sie zusammen in Gewahrsam legen drei Tage lang. (Gen 37,24) 18 Am dritten Tage aber sprach er zu ihnen: Wollt ihr leben, so tut nun dies, denn ich fürchte Gott: 19 Seid ihr redlich, so lasst einen eurer Brüder gebunden liegen in eurem Gefängnis; ihr aber zieht hin und bringt heim, was ihr gekauft habt für den Hunger in euren Häusern. 20 Und bringt euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir, so will ich euren Worten glauben, sodass ihr nicht sterben müsst. Und sie gingen darauf ein. 21 Sie sprachen aber untereinander: Das haben wir an unserem Bruder verschuldet! Denn wir sahen die Angst seiner Seele, als er uns anflehte, und wir wollten ihn nicht erhören; darum kommt nun diese Trübsal über uns. 22 Ruben antwortete ihnen und sprach: Sagte ich’s euch nicht, als ich sprach: Versündigt euch nicht an dem Knaben, doch ihr wolltet nicht hören? Nun wird sein Blut gefordert. (Gen 37,21) 23 Sie wussten aber nicht, dass es Josef verstand; denn er redete mit ihnen durch einen Dolmetscher. 24 Und er wandte sich von ihnen und weinte. Als er sich nun wieder zu ihnen wandte und mit ihnen redete, nahm er aus ihrer Mitte Simeon und ließ ihn binden vor ihren Augen. 25 Und Josef gab Befehl, ihre Säcke mit Korn zu füllen und ihnen ihr Geld wiederzugeben, einem jeden in seinen Sack, dazu auch Zehrung auf den Weg; und so tat man ihnen. 26 Und sie luden ihr Getreide auf ihre Esel und zogen von dannen. 27 Als aber einer seinen Sack auftat, dass er seinem Esel Futter gäbe in der Herberge, sah er sein Geld, das oben im Sack lag, 28 und sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Mein Geld ist wieder da, siehe, in meinem Sack ist es! Da stockte ihnen das Herz, und sie sprachen erschrocken zueinander: Was hat Gott uns angetan? 29 Als sie nun heimkamen zu ihrem Vater Jakob ins Land Kanaan, sagten sie ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war, und sprachen: 30 Der Mann, der im Lande Herr ist, redete hart mit uns und hielt uns für Kundschafter. 31 Und wir antworteten ihm: Wir sind redlich, wir sind keine Kundschafter, 32 sondern zwölf Brüder, unseres Vaters Söhne; der eine ist nicht mehr, und der jüngste ist noch bei unserm Vater im Lande Kanaan. 33 Da sprach der Herr im Lande zu uns: Daran will ich merken, ob ihr redlich seid: Einen eurer Brüder lasst bei mir und nehmt für eure Häuser, wie viel ihr bedürft, und zieht hin (Gen 24,1) 34 und bringt euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir, so merke ich, dass ihr nicht Kundschafter, sondern redlich seid; dann will ich euch auch euren Bruder wiedergeben und ihr mögt im Lande Handel treiben. 35 Und als sie die Säcke ausschütteten, fand ein jeder seinen Beutel Geld in seinem Sack. Und als sie sahen, dass es die Beutel mit ihrem Geld waren, erschraken sie samt ihrem Vater. 36 Da sprach Jakob, ihr Vater, zu ihnen: Ihr beraubt mich meiner Kinder! Josef ist nicht mehr da, Simeon ist nicht mehr da, Benjamin wollt ihr auch wegnehmen; es geht alles über mich. 37 Ruben antwortete seinem Vater und sprach: Wenn ich ihn dir nicht wiederbringe, so töte meine zwei Söhne. Gib ihn nur in meine Hand, ich will ihn dir wiederbringen. 38 Er sprach: Mein Sohn soll nicht mit euch hinabziehen; denn sein Bruder ist tot, und er ist allein übrig geblieben. Wenn ihm ein Unfall auf dem Wege begegnete, den ihr reist, würdet ihr meine grauen Haare mit Herzeleid hinunter zu den Toten bringen.

1 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? 2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. 3 And Joseph' ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt. 4 But Benjamin, Joseph' brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him. 5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph' brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth. 7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food. 8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him. 9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. 10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come. 11 We are all one man' sons; we are true men , thy servants are no spies. 12 And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. 13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not. 14 And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies: 15 Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither. 16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies. 17 And he put them all together into ward three days. 18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God: 19 If ye be true men , let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses: 20 But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so. 21 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. 22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required. 23 And they knew not that Joseph understood them ; for he spake unto them by an interpreter. 24 And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes. 25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man' money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them. 26 And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence. 27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack' mouth. 28 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them , and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us? 29 And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying, 30 The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country. 31 And we said unto him, We are true men ; we are no spies: 32 We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan. 33 And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men ; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone: 34 And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land. 35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man' bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children : Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away : all these things are against me. 37 And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again. 38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

Los hermanos de José van a Egipto

1 Cuando Jacob se enteró de que había alimento en Egipto, les dijo a sus hijos: «¿Qué hacen ahí parados, mirándose unos a otros? 2 He sabido que hay alimento en Egipto. Vayan allá y compren comida para nosotros, para que no muramos, sino que podamos sobrevivir.» 3 Diez de los hermanos de José fueron a Egipto a comprar alimento. 4 Pero Jacob no dejó que Benjamín, el hermano de José, se fuera con ellos porque pensó que podría sucederle alguna desgracia. 5 Fue así como los hijos de Israel fueron a comprar alimento, al igual que otros, porque el hambre se había apoderado de Canaán. 6 José era el gobernador del país, y el que vendía trigo a todo el mundo. Cuando sus hermanos llegaron ante él, se postraron rostro en tierra. 7 En cuanto José vio a sus hermanos, los reconoció; pero, fingiendo no conocerlos, les habló con rudeza: —¡Y ustedes!, ¿de dónde vienen? —Venimos de Canaán, para comprar alimento —contestaron. 8 Aunque José los había reconocido, sus hermanos no lo reconocieron a él. 9 En ese momento se acordó José de los sueños que había tenido acerca de ellos, y les dijo: —¡De seguro ustedes son espías, y han venido para investigar las zonas desprotegidas del país! 10 —¡No, señor! —respondieron—. Sus siervos hemos venido a comprar alimento. 11 Todos nosotros somos hijos de un mismo padre, y además somos gente honrada. ¡Sus siervos no somos espías! 12 —¡No es verdad! —insistió José—. Ustedes han venido para investigar las zonas desprotegidas del país. 13 Pero ellos volvieron a responder: —Nosotros, sus siervos, éramos doce hermanos, todos hijos de un mismo padre que vive en Canaán. El menor se ha quedado con nuestro padre, y el otro ya no vive. 14 Pero José los increpó una vez más: —Es tal como les he dicho. ¡Ustedes son espías! 15 Y con esto lo vamos a comprobar: Les juro por la vida del faraón, que de aquí no saldrán con vida a menos que traigan a su hermano menor. 16 Manden a uno de ustedes a buscar a su hermano; los demás se quedarán en la cárcel. Así sabremos si es verdad lo que dicen. Y si no es así, ¡por la vida del faraón, ustedes son espías! 17 José los encerró en la cárcel durante tres días. 18 Al tercer día les dijo: —Yo soy un hombre temeroso de Dios. Hagan lo siguiente y salvarán su vida. 19 Si en verdad son honrados, quédese uno de ustedes bajo custodia, y vayan los demás y lleven alimento para calmar el hambre de sus familias. 20 Pero tráiganme a su hermano menor y pruébenme que dicen la verdad. Así no morirán. Ellos aceptaron la propuesta, 21 pero se decían unos a otros: —Sin duda estamos sufriendo las consecuencias de lo que hicimos con nuestro hermano. Aunque vimos su angustia cuando nos suplicaba que le tuviéramos compasión, no le hicimos caso. Por eso ahora nos vemos en aprietos. 22 Entonces habló Rubén: —Yo les advertí que no le hicieran daño al muchacho, pero no me hicieron caso. ¡Ahora tenemos que pagar el precio de su sangre! 23 Como José les hablaba por medio de un intérprete, ellos no sabían que él entendía todo lo que estaban diciendo. 24 José se apartó de ellos y se echó a llorar. Luego, cuando se controló y pudo hablarles, apartó a Simeón y ordenó que lo ataran en presencia de ellos. 25 José dio también la orden de que llenaran de alimentos sus costales, que repusieran en cada una de sus bolsas el dinero que habían pagado, y que les dieran provisiones para el viaje. Y así se hizo. 26 Entonces ellos cargaron el alimento sobre sus asnos y emprendieron el viaje de vuelta. 27 Cuando llegaron al lugar donde acamparían esa noche, uno de ellos abrió su bolsa para darle de comer a su asno, ¡y allí en la abertura descubrió su dinero! 28 Entonces les dijo a sus hermanos: —¡Me devolvieron el dinero! Miren, ¡aquí está, en mi bolsa! Los otros se asustaron mucho, y temblando se decían unos a otros: —¿Qué es lo que Dios nos ha hecho? 29 Al llegar a Canaán, donde estaba su padre Jacob, le contaron todo lo que les había sucedido: 30 —El hombre que gobierna aquel país nos trató con rudeza, a tal grado que nos acusó de ser espías. 31 Nosotros le dijimos: “Somos gente honrada. No somos espías.” 32 Además, le dijimos: “Somos doce hermanos, hijos de un mismo padre. Uno ya no vive, y el menor se ha quedado con nuestro padre en Canaán.” 33 »Entonces el hombre que gobierna aquel país nos dijo: “Con esto voy a comprobar si en verdad son gente honrada. Dejen aquí conmigo a uno de sus hermanos, y vayan a llevar alimento para calmar el hambre de sus familias. 34 Pero a la vuelta tráiganme a su hermano menor. Así comprobaré que no son espías, y que en verdad son gente honrada. Luego les entregaré de vuelta a su hermano, y podrán moverse^[1]con libertad por el país.” 35 Cuando comenzaron a vaciar sus costales, se encontraron con que la bolsa de dinero de cada uno estaba allí. Esto hizo que ellos y su padre se llenaran de temor. 36 Entonces Jacob, su padre, les dijo: —¡Ustedes me van a dejar sin hijos! José ya no está con nosotros, Simeón tampoco está aquí, ¡y ahora se quieren llevar a Benjamín! ¡Todo esto me perjudica! 37 Pero Rubén le dijo a su padre: —Yo me hago cargo de Benjamín. Si no te lo devuelvo, podrás matar a mis dos hijos. 38 —¡Mi hijo no se irá con ustedes! —replicó Jacob—. Su hermano José ya está muerto, y ahora sólo él me queda. Si le llega a pasar una desgracia en el viaje que van a emprender, ustedes tendrán la culpa de que este pobre viejo se muera de tristeza.
