Giuda e Tamar

1 In quel tempo Giuda si separò dai suoi fratelli e andò a stare da un uomo di Adullam, di nome Chira. 2 Là Giuda vide la figlia di un Cananeo di nome Sua; se la prese e si unì a lei. 3 Ella concepì e partorì un figlio, che egli chiamò Er. 4 Poi ella concepì di nuovo e partorì un figlio, che chiamò Onan. 5 Partorì ancora un figlio e lo chiamò Sela. Giuda era a Chezib, quando ella lo partorì. 6 Giuda prese per Er, suo primogenito, una moglie che si chiamava Tamar. 7 Ma Er, primogenito di Giuda, era perverso agli occhi del Signore; e il Signore lo fece morire. 8 Allora Giuda disse a Onan: «Va’ dalla moglie di tuo fratello, prenditela in moglie come cognato e suscita una discendenza a tuo fratello». 9 Onan, sapendo che quei discendenti non sarebbero stati suoi, quando si accostava alla moglie di suo fratello, faceva in modo di impedire il concepimento, per non dare discendenti al fratello. 10 Ciò che egli faceva dispiacque al Signore, il quale fece morire anche lui. 11 Allora Giuda disse a Tamar sua nuora: «Rimani vedova in casa di tuo padre, finché Sela, mio figlio, sia cresciuto». Perché diceva: «Badiamo che anche egli non muoia come i suoi fratelli». E Tamar se ne andò e abitò in casa di suo padre. 12 Passarono molti giorni e la figlia di Sua, moglie di Giuda, morì; e, dopo che Giuda si fu consolato, salì da quelli che tosavano le sue pecore a Timna: c’era con lui il suo amico Chira, l’Adullamita. 13 Tamar ne fu informata. Le dissero: «Ecco, tuo suocero sale a Timna a tosare le sue pecore». 14 Allora ella si tolse le vesti da vedova, si coprì d’un velo, se ne avvolse tutta e si mise seduta alla porta di Enaim che è sulla via di Timna; infatti, aveva visto che Sela era cresciuto, e tuttavia lei non gli era stata data in moglie. 15 Come Giuda la vide, la prese per una prostituta, perché ella aveva il viso coperto. 16 Avvicinatosi a lei sulla via, le disse: «Lasciami venire da te!» Infatti non sapeva che quella fosse sua nuora. Lei rispose: «Che mi darai per venire da me?» 17 Egli le disse: «Ti manderò un capretto del mio gregge». E lei: «Mi darai un pegno finché tu me lo abbia mandato?» 18 Ed egli: «Che pegno ti darò?» L’altra rispose: «Il tuo sigillo, il tuo cordone e il bastone che hai in mano». Egli glieli diede, andò da lei ed ella rimase incinta di lui. 19 Allora Tamar si alzò e se ne andò; si tolse il velo e si rimise le vesti da vedova. 20 Giuda mandò il capretto per mezzo del suo amico, l’Adullamita, al fine di ritirare il pegno dalle mani di quella donna, ma egli non la trovò. 21 Interrogò la gente del luogo, dicendo: «Dov’è quella prostituta che stava a Enaim, sulla via?» Quelli risposero: «Qui non c’è stata nessuna prostituta». 22 Egli se ne tornò da Giuda e gli disse: «Non l’ho trovata e, per di più, la gente del luogo mi ha detto: “Qui non c’è stata nessuna prostituta”». 23 Giuda disse: «Si tenga pure il pegno, e non esponiamoci agli scherni! Ecco, io ho mandato questo capretto e tu non l’hai trovata». 24 Circa tre mesi dopo vennero a dire a Giuda: «Tamar, tua nuora, si è prostituita e, per di più, eccola incinta in seguito alla sua prostituzione». Giuda disse: «Portatela fuori e sia bruciata!» 25 Mentre la portavano fuori, mandò a dire a suo suocero: «Sono incinta dell’uomo al quale appartengono queste cose». E disse: «Riconosci, ti prego, di chi siano questo sigillo, questi cordoni e questo bastone». 26 Giuda li riconobbe e disse: «È più giusta di me, perché non l’ho data a mio figlio Sela». Ed egli non ebbe più relazioni con lei. 27 Quando venne il tempo in cui doveva partorire, ecco che Tamar aveva in grembo due gemelli. 28 Mentre partoriva, l’uno di essi mise fuori una mano e la levatrice la prese e vi legò un filo scarlatto, dicendo: «Questo qui esce per primo». 29 Ma egli ritirò la mano, ed uscì suo fratello. Allora la levatrice disse: «Perché ti sei fatta questa breccia?» Per questo motivo gli fu messo nome Perez. 30 Poi uscì suo fratello, che aveva alla mano il filo scarlatto; e fu chiamato Zerac^[1].

1 Es begab sich um diese Zeit, dass Juda hinabzog von seinen Brüdern und gesellte sich zu einem Mann aus Adullam, der hieß Hira. 2 Und Juda sah dort die Tochter eines Kanaaniters, der hieß Schua, und nahm sie zur Frau. Und als er zu ihr einging, 3 ward sie schwanger und gebar einen Sohn, den nannte er Ger. 4 Und sie ward abermals schwanger und gebar einen Sohn, den nannte sie Onan. 5 Sie gebar abermals einen Sohn, den nannte sie Schela; und Juda war in Kesib, als sie ihn gebar. 6 Und Juda gab seinem ersten Sohn Ger eine Frau, die hieß Tamar. 7 Aber Ger missfiel dem HERRN, und der HERR ließ ihn sterben. 8 Da sprach Juda zu Onan: Lege dich zu deines Bruders Frau und nimm sie zur Ehe, dass du deinem Bruder Nachkommen schaffst. (De 25,5) 9 Aber da Onan wusste, dass die Kinder nicht sein Eigen sein sollten, ließ er’s auf die Erde fallen und verderben, wenn er einging zu seines Bruders Frau, auf dass er seinem Bruder nicht Nachkommen schaffe. 10 Dem HERRN missfiel aber, was er tat, und er ließ ihn auch sterben. 11 Da sprach Juda zu seiner Schwiegertochter Tamar: Bleibe eine Witwe in deines Vaters Hause, bis mein Sohn Schela groß geworden ist. Denn er dachte, vielleicht würde der auch sterben wie seine Brüder. So ging Tamar hin und blieb in ihres Vaters Hause. 12 Als nun viele Tage verlaufen waren, starb Judas Frau, die Tochter des Schua. Und nachdem Juda ausgetrauert hatte, ging er hinauf, seine Schafe zu scheren, nach Timna mit seinem Freunde Hira aus Adullam. 13 Da wurde der Tamar gesagt: Siehe, dein Schwiegervater geht hinauf nach Timna, seine Schafe zu scheren. (Gios 15,57) 14 Da legte sie die Witwenkleider ab, bedeckte sich mit einem Schleier und verhüllte sich und setzte sich vor das Tor von Enajim an dem Wege nach Timna; denn sie hatte gesehen, dass Schela groß geworden, dass sie ihm aber nicht zur Frau gegeben worden war. 15 Als Juda sie nun sah, meinte er, es wäre eine Hure, denn sie hatte ihr Angesicht verdeckt. 16 Und er machte sich zu ihr am Wege und sprach: Lass mich doch zu dir kommen; denn er wusste nicht, dass es seine Schwiegertochter war. Sie antwortete: Was willst du mir geben, wenn du zu mir kommst? (Le 18,15) 17 Er sprach: Ich will dir ein Zicklein von der Herde senden. Sie antwortete: So gib mir ein Pfand, bis du es mir sendest. 18 Er sprach: Was willst du für ein Pfand, das ich dir geben soll? Sie antwortete: Dein Siegel und deine Schnur und deinen Stab, den du in der Hand hast. Da gab er’s ihr und kam zu ihr; und sie ward von ihm schwanger. 19 Und sie machte sich auf und ging hinweg und legte den Schleier ab und zog ihre Witwenkleider wieder an. 20 Juda aber sandte das Zicklein durch seinen Freund aus Adullam, damit er das Pfand zurückholte von der Frau. Und er fand sie nicht. 21 Da fragte er die Leute ihres Ortes und sprach: Wo ist die Tempelhure, die zu Enajim am Wege saß? Sie antworteten: Es ist keine Tempelhure da gewesen. (De 23,18) 22 Und er kam wieder zu Juda und sprach: Ich habe sie nicht gefunden; dazu sagen die Leute des Ortes, es sei keine Tempelhure da gewesen. 23 Juda sprach: Sie mag’s behalten, damit wir nur nicht in Verruf geraten! Siehe, ich habe das Zicklein gesandt, und du hast sie nicht gefunden. 24 Nach drei Monaten wurde Juda angesagt: Deine Schwiegertochter Tamar hat Hurerei getrieben; und siehe, sie ist von ihrer Hurerei schwanger geworden. Juda sprach: Führt sie heraus, dass sie verbrannt werde. 25 Und als man sie hinausführte, schickte sie zu ihrem Schwiegervater und sprach: Von dem Mann bin ich schwanger, dem dies gehört. Und sie sprach: Erkennst du auch, wem dies Siegel und diese Schnur und dieser Stab gehören? 26 Juda erkannte es und sprach: Sie ist gerecht, ich nicht; denn ich habe sie meinem Sohn Schela nicht gegeben. Doch wohnte er ihr nicht mehr bei. 27 Und als sie gebären sollte, da waren Zwillinge in ihrem Leibe. 28 Und als sie gebar, tat sich eine Hand heraus. Da griff die Hebamme zu und band einen roten Faden um seine Hand und sprach: Der ist zuerst herausgekommen. 29 Als aber der seine Hand wieder hineinzog, kam sein Bruder heraus, und sie sprach: Warum hast du um deinetwillen solchen Riss gerissen? Und man nannte ihn Perez. (Ru 4,18; Mat 1,3) 30 Danach kam sein Bruder heraus, der den roten Faden um seine Hand hatte. Und man nannte ihn Serach.

1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her. 3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er. 4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan. 5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him. 6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. 7 And Er, Judah' firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. 8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother' wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. 9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother' wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also. 11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father' house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did . And Tamar went and dwelt in her father' house. 12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah' wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep. 14 And she put her widow' garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face. 16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me? 17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it ? 18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him. 19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. 20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman' hand: but he found her not. 21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place . 22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place . 23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her. 24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. 25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff. 26 And Judah acknowledged them , and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more. 27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. 28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. 29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez. 30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

1 Por esos días, Judá se apartó de sus hermanos y se fue a vivir a la casa de un hombre llamado Hirá, residente del pueblo de Adulán. 2 Allí Judá conoció a una mujer, hija de un cananeo llamado Súa, y se casó con ella. Luego de tener relaciones con él, 3 ella concibió y dio a luz un hijo, al que llamó Er. 4 Tiempo después volvió a concebir, y dio a luz otro hijo, al que llamó Onán. 5 Pasado el tiempo tuvo otro hijo, al que llamó Selá, el cual nació en Quezib. 6 Judá consiguió para Er, su hijo mayor, una esposa que se llamaba Tamar. 7 Pero al Señor no le agradó la conducta del primogénito de Judá, y le quitó la vida. 8 Entonces Judá le dijo a Onán: «Cásate con la viuda de tu hermano y cumple con tu deber de cuñado; así le darás descendencia a tu hermano.» 9 Pero Onán sabía que los hijos que nacieran no serían reconocidos como suyos. Por eso, cada vez que tenía relaciones con ella, derramaba el semen en el suelo, y así evitaba que su hermano tuviera descendencia. 10 Esta conducta ofendió mucho al Señor, así que también a él le quitó la vida. 11 Entonces Judá le dijo a su nuera Tamar: «Quédate como viuda en la casa de tu padre, hasta que mi hijo Selá tenga edad de casarse.» Pero en realidad Judá pensaba que Selá podría morirse, lo mismo que sus hermanos. Así que Tamar se fue a vivir a la casa de su padre. 12 Después de mucho tiempo, murió la esposa de Judá, la hija de Súa. Al concluir el tiempo de duelo, Judá fue al pueblo de Timnat para esquilar sus ovejas. Lo acompañó su amigo Hirá, el adulanita. 13 Cuando Tamar se enteró de que su suegro se dirigía hacia Timnat para esquilar sus ovejas, 14 se quitó el vestido de viuda, se cubrió con un velo para que nadie la reconociera, y se sentó a la entrada del pueblo de Enayin, que está en el camino a Timnat. Esto lo hizo porque se dio cuenta de que Selá ya tenía edad de casarse y aún no se lo daban a ella por esposo. 15 Cuando Judá la vio con el rostro cubierto, la tomó por una prostituta. 16 No sabiendo que era su nuera, se acercó a la orilla del camino y le dijo: —Deja que me acueste contigo. —¿Qué me das si te digo que sí? —le preguntó ella. 17 —Te mandaré uno de los cabritos de mi rebaño —respondió Judá. —Está bien —respondió ella—, pero déjame algo en garantía hasta que me lo mandes. 18 —¿Qué prenda quieres que te deje? —preguntó Judá. —Dame tu sello y su cordón, y el bastón que llevas en la mano —respondió Tamar. Judá se los entregó, se acostó con ella y la dejó embarazada. 19 Cuando ella se levantó, se fue inmediatamente de allí, se quitó el velo y volvió a ponerse la ropa de viuda. 20 Más tarde, Judá envió el cabrito por medio de su amigo adulanita, para recuperar las prendas que había dejado con la mujer; pero su amigo no dio con ella. 21 Entonces le preguntó a la gente del lugar: —¿Dónde está la prostituta^[1] de Enayin, la que se sentaba junto al camino? —Aquí nunca ha habido una prostituta así —le contestaron. 22 El amigo regresó adonde estaba Judá y le dijo: —No la pude encontrar. Además, la gente del lugar me informó que allí nunca había estado una prostituta como ésa. 23 —Que se quede con las prendas —replicó Judá—; no es cuestión de que hagamos el ridículo. Pero que quede claro: yo le envié el cabrito, y tú no la encontraste. 24 Como tres meses después, le informaron a Judá lo siguiente: —Tu nuera Tamar se ha prostituido, y como resultado de sus andanzas ha quedado embarazada. —¡Sáquenla y quémenla! —exclamó Judá. 25 Pero cuando la estaban sacando, ella mandó este mensaje a su suegro: «El dueño de estas prendas fue quien me embarazó. A ver si reconoce usted de quién son este sello, el cordón del sello, y este bastón.» 26 Judá los reconoció y declaró: «Su conducta es más justa que la mía, pues yo no la di por esposa a mi hijo Selá.» Y no volvió a acostarse con ella. 27 Cuando llegó el tiempo de que Tamar diera a luz, resultó que tenía mellizos en su seno. 28 En el momento de nacer, uno de los mellizos sacó la mano; la partera le ató un hilo rojo en la mano, y dijo: «Éste salió primero.» 29 Pero en ese momento el niño metió la mano, y salió primero el otro. Entonces la partera dijo: «¡Cómo te abriste paso!» Por eso al niño lo llamaron Fares.^[2] 30 Luego salió su hermano, con el hilo rojo atado en la mano, y lo llamaron Zera.^[3]
