Ritorno di Giacobbe in Canaan

1 Giacobbe sentì che i figli di Labano dicevano: «Giacobbe ha preso tutto quello che era di nostro padre e, con quello che era di nostro padre, si è fatto tutta questa ricchezza». 2 Giacobbe osservò pure il volto di Labano e vide che non era più, verso di lui, quello di prima. 3 Il Signore disse a Giacobbe: «Torna al paese dei tuoi padri, dai tuoi parenti, e io sarò con te». 4 Allora Giacobbe mandò a chiamare Rachele e Lea perché venissero ai campi, presso il suo gregge, 5 e disse loro: «Io vedo che il volto di vostro padre non è più, verso di me, quello di prima; ma il Dio di mio padre è stato con me. 6 Voi sapete che io ho servito vostro padre con tutte le mie forze, 7 mentre vostro padre mi ha ingannato e ha mutato il mio salario dieci volte; ma Dio non gli ha permesso di farmi del male. 8 Quando egli diceva: “I macchiati saranno il tuo salario”, tutto il gregge figliava agnelli macchiati. Quando diceva: “Gli striati saranno il tuo salario”, tutto il gregge figliava agnelli striati. 9 Così Dio ha tolto il bestiame a vostro padre e lo ha dato a me. 10 Una volta, quando le pecore entravano in calore, io alzai gli occhi e vidi in sogno che i maschi, che montavano le femmine, erano striati, macchiati o chiazzati. 11 L’angelo di Dio mi disse nel sogno: “Giacobbe!” Io risposi: “Eccomi!” 12 L’angelo disse: “Alza ora gli occhi e guarda; tutti i maschi che montano le femmine sono striati, macchiati o chiazzati, perché ho visto tutto quello che Labano ti fa. 13 Io sono il Dio di Betel, dove tu versasti dell’olio su una pietra commemorativa e mi facesti un voto. Ora àlzati, parti da questo paese e torna al tuo paese natìo”». 14 Rachele e Lea gli risposero: «Abbiamo forse ancora qualche parte o eredità in casa di nostro padre? 15 Non ci ha forse trattate da straniere, quando ci ha vendute e ha per di più divorato il nostro denaro? 16 Tutte le ricchezze che Dio ha tolte a nostro padre sono nostre e dei nostri figli. Fa’ dunque tutto quello che Dio ti ha detto». 17 Allora Giacobbe si alzò, mise i suoi figli e le sue mogli sui cammelli 18 e portò via tutto il suo bestiame – tutti i beni che si era procurato, il bestiame che gli apparteneva e che aveva acquistato in Paddan-Aram – per andarsene da suo padre Isacco nel paese di Canaan. 19 Or mentre Labano se ne era andato a tosare le sue pecore, Rachele rubò gli idoli di suo padre^[1]. 20 Giacobbe ingannò Labano l’Arameo, perché non gli disse che stava per fuggire. 21 Così se ne fuggì con tutto quello che aveva; si levò, passò il fiume^[2] e si diresse verso il monte di Galaad.

Labano insegue Giacobbe

22 Il terzo giorno avvertirono Labano che Giacobbe era fuggito. 23 Allora egli prese con sé i suoi fratelli, lo inseguì per sette giornate di cammino e lo raggiunse al monte di Galaad. 24 Ma Dio venne da Labano l’Arameo, di notte, in un sogno, e gli disse: «Guàrdati dal parlare a Giacobbe, né in bene né in male». 25 Labano dunque raggiunse Giacobbe. Giacobbe aveva piantato la sua tenda sul monte; anche Labano e i suoi fratelli avevano piantato le loro sul monte di Galaad. 26 Allora Labano disse a Giacobbe: «Che hai fatto? Mi hai ingannato e portato via le mie figlie come prigioniere di guerra. 27 Perché sei fuggito di nascosto e mi hai ingannato e non mi hai avvertito? Io ti avrei congedato con gioia e canti, al suono di timpano e di cetra. 28 E non mi hai neppure permesso di baciare i miei figli e le mie figlie! Tu hai agito da stolto. 29 Ora è in mio potere di farvi del male, ma il Dio di vostro padre mi parlò la notte scorsa, dicendo: “Guàrdati dal parlare a Giacobbe, né in bene né in male”. 30 Ora certo te ne sei andato poiché avevi nostalgia della casa di tuo padre, ma perché hai rubato i miei dèi?» 31 Giacobbe rispose a Labano: «Avevo paura, perché mi sono detto che mi avresti tolto con la forza le tue figlie. 32 Ma chiunque sia colui presso il quale troverai i tuoi dèi, egli deve morire! In presenza dei nostri fratelli, riscontra ciò che è tuo fra le cose mie e prenditelo!» Giacobbe ignorava che Rachele avesse rubato gli idoli. 33 Labano dunque entrò nella tenda di Giacobbe, nella tenda di Lea e nella tenda delle due serve, ma non trovò nulla. Uscito dalla tenda di Lea, entrò nella tenda di Rachele. 34 Ora Rachele aveva preso gli idoli, li aveva messi nella sella del cammello e si era seduta sopra quelli. Labano frugò tutta la tenda e non trovò nulla. 35 Lei disse a suo padre: «Il mio signore non si adiri se io non posso alzarmi davanti a te, perché ho le solite ricorrenze delle donne». Egli cercò, ma non trovò gli idoli. 36 Allora Giacobbe si adirò e si mise a litigare con Labano, dicendo: «Qual è il mio delitto, e quale il mio peccato, perché tu mi abbia inseguito con tanto ardore? 37 Tu hai frugato tutta la mia roba; che hai trovato di tutta la roba di casa tua? Mettilo qui davanti ai miei e tuoi fratelli e giudichino loro tra noi due! 38 Ecco, sono stato con te vent’anni, le tue pecore e le tue capre non hanno abortito e io non ho mangiato i montoni del tuo gregge. 39 Io non ti ho mai portato una bestia sbranata; ne ho subìto il danno io; tu mi chiedevi conto di quello che era stato rubato di giorno o rubato di notte. 40 Di giorno mi consumava il caldo; di notte, il gelo; il sonno fuggiva dagli occhi miei. 41 Ecco vent’anni che sono in casa tua; ti ho servito quattordici anni per le tue due figlie e sei anni per le tue pecore, e tu hai modificato il mio salario dieci volte. 42 Se il Dio di mio padre, il Dio di Abraamo e il Terrore d’Isacco non fosse stato con me, ora tu mi avresti certo rimandato a mani vuote. Dio ha visto la mia afflizione e la fatica delle mie mani e la notte scorsa ha pronunciato la sua sentenza». 43 Labano rispose a Giacobbe dicendo: «Queste figlie sono mie figlie, questi figli sono miei figli, queste pecore sono pecore mie e tutto quel che vedi è mio. E che posso fare io oggi a queste mie figlie o ai figli che esse hanno partorito? 44 Or dunque vieni, facciamo un patto fra me e te ed esso serva di testimonianza fra me e te». 45 Giacobbe prese una pietra e la eresse come pietra commemorativa. 46 Giacobbe disse ai suoi fratelli: «Raccogliete delle pietre». Essi presero delle pietre, ne fecero un mucchio e presso il mucchio mangiarono. 47 Labano chiamò quel mucchio Iegar-Saaduta e Giacobbe lo chiamò Galed^[3]. 48 Labano disse: «Questo mucchio è oggi testimone fra me e te». Perciò fu chiamato Galed 49 e anche Mispa^[4], perché Labano disse: «Il Signore tenga l’occhio su di me e su di te quando non ci vedremo l’un l’altro. 50 Se tu maltratti le mie figlie e se prendi altre mogli oltre alle mie figlie, non un uomo sarà con noi; ma, bada, Dio sarà testimone fra me e te». 51 Labano disse ancora a Giacobbe: «Ecco questo mucchio e la pietra commemorativa che ho eretta fra me e te. 52 Sia questo mucchio testimone e sia questa pietra commemorativa testimone che io non passerò oltre questo mucchio per andare da te e che tu non passerai oltre questo mucchio e questa pietra commemorativa per fare del male. 53 Il Dio di Abraamo e il Dio di Naor, il Dio del padre loro, sia giudice tra di noi!» Giacobbe giurò per il Terrore d’Isacco suo padre. 54 Poi Giacobbe offrì un sacrificio sul monte e invitò i suoi fratelli a mangiare del pane. Essi dunque mangiarono del pane e passarono la notte sul monte.

55 La mattina Labano si alzò di buon’ora, baciò i suoi figli e le sue figlie e li benedisse. Poi Labano se ne andò e tornò a casa sua.

Jakobs Flucht mit den Seinen

1 Und es kamen vor ihn die Reden der Söhne Labans, dass sie sprachen: Jakob hat alles Gut unseres Vaters an sich gebracht, und nur von unseres Vaters Gut hat er solchen Reichtum zuwege gebracht. (Gen 30,35) 2 Und Jakob sah an das Angesicht Labans, und siehe, er war zu ihm nicht mehr wie zuvor. 3 Und der HERR sprach zu Jakob: Zieh wieder in deiner Väter Land und zu deiner Verwandtschaft; ich will mit dir sein. (Gen 12,1; Gen 28,15) 4 Da sandte Jakob hin und ließ rufen Rahel und Lea aufs Feld zu seiner Herde 5 und sprach zu ihnen: Ich sehe an eures Vaters Angesicht, dass er zu mir nicht ist wie zuvor; aber der Gott meines Vaters ist mit mir gewesen. 6 Und ihr wisst, dass ich aus allen meinen Kräften eurem Vater gedient habe. 7 Und er hat mich getäuscht und zehnmal meinen Lohn verändert; aber Gott hat ihm nicht gestattet, dass er mir Schaden täte. 8 Wenn er sprach: Die Gefleckten sollen dein Lohn sein, so warf die ganze Herde Gefleckte. Wenn er aber sprach: Die Sprenkligen sollen dein Lohn sein, so warf die ganze Herde Sprenklige. 9 So hat Gott die Güter eures Vaters ihm entwunden und mir gegeben. 10 Denn wenn die Brunstzeit kam, hob ich meine Augen auf und sah im Traum, und siehe, die Böcke, die die Tiere besprangen, waren sprenklig, gefleckt und scheckig. 11 Und der Engel Gottes sprach zu mir im Traum: Jakob! Und ich antwortete: Hier bin ich. 12 Er aber sprach: Hebe deine Augen auf und sieh! Alle Böcke, die die Tiere bespringen, sind sprenklig, gefleckt und scheckig; denn ich habe alles gesehen, was Laban dir antut. 13 Ich bin der Gott zu Bethel, wo du das Steinmal gesalbt hast, und du hast mir daselbst ein Gelübde getan. Nun mach dich auf und zieh aus diesem Lande und kehre zurück in das Land deiner Verwandtschaft. (Gen 28,18) 14 Da antworteten Rahel und Lea und sprachen zu ihm: Haben wir denn noch Anteil und Erbe am Hause unseres Vaters? 15 Gelten wir ihm nicht als Fremde? Hat er uns doch verkauft und unsern Kaufpreis verzehrt! (Gen 29,18; Gen 29,27) 16 Fürwahr, der ganze Reichtum, den Gott unserm Vater entzogen hat, gehört uns und unsern Kindern. Alles nun, was Gott dir gesagt hat, das tu! 17 Da machte sich Jakob auf und lud seine Kinder und Frauen auf die Kamele 18 und führte weg all sein Vieh und alle seine Habe, die er in Paddan-Aram erworben hatte, dass er käme zu Isaak, seinem Vater, ins Land Kanaan. 19 Laban aber war gegangen, seine Herde zu scheren. Da stahl Rahel ihres Vaters Hausgott. (Gen 35,4; Giudic 17,5; Giudic 18,17; 1Sam 19,13; 2Re 23,24; Zac 10,2)

20 Und Jakob täuschte Laban, den Aramäer, damit, dass er ihm nicht ansagte, dass er ziehen wollte. 21 So floh er mit allem, was sein war, machte sich auf und fuhr über den Euphrat und richtete seinen Weg nach dem Gebirge Gilead.

Der Vertrag zwischen Jakob und Laban

22 Am dritten Tage wurde Laban angesagt, dass Jakob geflohen wäre. 23 Und er nahm seine Brüder zu sich und jagte ihm nach, sieben Tagereisen weit, und ereilte ihn auf dem Gebirge Gilead. (Gen 47,1) 24 Aber Gott kam zu Laban, dem Aramäer, im Traum des Nachts und sprach zu ihm: Hüte dich, mit Jakob im Guten oder Bösen zu reden. 25 Und Laban holte Jakob ein. Jakob aber hatte sein Zelt aufgeschlagen auf dem Gebirge, und Laban mit seinen Brüdern schlug sein Zelt auch auf dem Gebirge Gilead auf. 26 Da sprach Laban zu Jakob: Was hast du getan, dass du mich getäuscht hast und hast meine Töchter entführt, als wenn sie im Krieg gefangen wären? 27 Warum bist du heimlich geflohen und hast mich hintergangen und hast mir’s nicht angesagt, dass ich dich geleitet hätte mit Freuden, mit Liedern, mit Pauken und Harfen? 28 Und hast mich nicht einmal lassen meine Enkel und Töchter küssen? Nun, du hast töricht getan. 29 Ich hätte wohl so viel Macht, dass ich euch Böses antun könnte; aber eures Vaters Gott hat diese Nacht zu mir gesagt: Hüte dich, mit Jakob im Guten oder Bösen zu reden. 30 Und wenn du schon weggezogen bist und sehntest dich so sehr nach deines Vaters Hause, warum hast du mir dann aber meinen Gott gestohlen? 31 Jakob antwortete und sprach zu Laban: Ich fürchtete mich und dachte, du würdest deine Töchter von mir reißen. 32 Bei wem du aber deinen Gott findest, der sterbe! Hier vor unsern Brüdern suche das Deine bei mir und nimm’s hin. Jakob wusste aber nicht, dass Rahel ihn gestohlen hatte. (Gen 19,1) 33 Da ging Laban in die Zelte Jakobs und Leas und der beiden Mägde und fand nichts. Und ging aus dem Zelte Leas in das Zelt Rahels. 34 Rahel aber hatte den Hausgott genommen und unter den Kamelsattel gelegt und sich daraufgesetzt. Laban aber betastete das ganze Zelt und fand nichts. 35 Da sprach sie zu ihrem Vater: Mein Herr, zürne nicht, denn ich kann nicht aufstehen vor dir, denn es geht mir nach der Frauen Weise. Daher fand er den Hausgott nicht, wie sehr er auch suchte. (Le 15,19) 36 Und Jakob wurde zornig und schalt Laban und sprach zu ihm: Was hab ich Übles getan oder gesündigt, dass du so hitzig hinter mir her bist? 37 Du hast all meinen Hausrat betastet. Was hast du von deinem Hausrat gefunden? Lege das her vor meinen und deinen Brüdern, dass sie zwischen uns beiden richten. 38 Diese zwanzig Jahre bin ich bei dir gewesen, deine Schafe und Ziegen haben keine Fehlgeburt gehabt; die Widder deiner Herde hab ich nie gegessen; 39 was die wilden Tiere zerrissen, brachte ich dir nicht, ich musste es ersetzen; du fordertest es von meiner Hand, es mochte mir des Tages oder des Nachts gestohlen sein. (Eso 22,11) 40 Des Tages kam ich um vor Hitze und des Nachts vor Frost und kein Schlaf kam in meine Augen. 41 So habe ich diese zwanzig Jahre in deinem Hause gedient, vierzehn um deine Töchter und sechs um deine Herde, und du hast mir meinen Lohn zehnmal verändert. (Gen 29,20; Gen 29,30; Gen 30,31) 42 Wenn nicht der Gott meines Vaters, der Gott Abrahams und der Schrecken Isaaks^[1], auf meiner Seite gewesen wäre, du hättest mich leer ziehen lassen. Aber Gott hat mein Elend und meine Mühe angesehen und hat diese Nacht rechtes Urteil gesprochen. 43 Laban antwortete und sprach zu Jakob: Die Töchter sind meine Töchter und die Kinder sind meine Kinder und die Herden sind meine Herden und alles, was du siehst, ist mein. Was kann ich heute für meine Töchter oder ihre Kinder tun, die sie geboren haben? (Eso 21,4) 44 So komm nun und lass uns einen Bund schließen, ich und du, der ein Zeuge sei zwischen mir und dir. 45 Da nahm Jakob einen Stein und richtete ihn auf zu einem Steinmal 46 und sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Lest Steine auf! Und sie nahmen Steine und machten davon einen Haufen und aßen daselbst auf dem Steinhaufen. 47 Und Laban nannte ihn Jegar-Sahaduta, Jakob aber nannte ihn Gal-Ed. (Gen 23,1) 48 Da sprach Laban: Der Steinhaufe sei heute Zeuge zwischen mir und dir. Daher nennt man ihn Gal-Ed^[2] (Gios 24,27) 49 und Mizpa^[3]; denn er sprach: Der HERR wache als Späher über mir und dir, wenn wir voneinander gegangen sind, (Giudic 11,11) 50 dass du meine Töchter nicht bedrückst oder andere Frauen dazunimmst zu meinen Töchtern. Es ist hier kein Mensch bei uns; siehe aber, Gott ist der Zeuge zwischen mir und dir. 51 Und Laban sprach weiter zu Jakob: Siehe, das ist der Haufe und das ist das Steinmal, das ich aufgerichtet habe zwischen mir und dir. 52 Dieser Steinhaufe sei Zeuge und das Steinmal sei auch Zeuge, dass ich nicht an diesem Haufen vorüberziehe zu dir hin oder du vorüberziehst zu mir hin an diesem Haufen und diesem Mal in böser Absicht! 53 Der Gott Abrahams und der Gott Nahors sei Richter zwischen uns – der Gott ihres Vaters! Und Jakob schwor bei dem Schrecken seines Vaters Isaak. (Gen 42,1) 54 Und Jakob opferte auf dem Gebirge und lud seine Brüder zum Essen. Und als sie gegessen hatten, blieben sie auf dem Gebirge über Nacht.

1 And he heard the words of Laban' sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father'; and of that which was our father' hath he gotten all this glory. 2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before. 3 And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee. 4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock, 5 And said unto them, I see your father' countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me. 6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father. 7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me. 8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked. 9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me. 10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled. 11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying , Jacob: And I said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee. 13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. 14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father' house? 15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money. 16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children': now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do. 17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels; 18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. 19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father'. 20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled. 21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead. 22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled. 23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days'journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead. 24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. 25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead. 26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword? 27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp? 28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing. 29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. 30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father' house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods? 31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me. 32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them. 33 And Laban went into Jacob' tent, and into Leah' tent, and into the two maidservants'tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah' tent, and entered into Rachel' tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel' furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not. 35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images. 36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me? 37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both. 38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten. 39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. 40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes. 41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times. 42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight. 43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born? 44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee. 45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar. 46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap. 47 And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed. 48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed; 49 And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another. 50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee. 51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee; 52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm. 53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac. 54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount. 55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.

1 Pero Jacob se enteró de que los hijos de Labán andaban diciendo: «Jacob se ha ido apoderando de todo lo que le pertenecía a nuestro padre, y se ha enriquecido a costa suya.» 2 También notó que Labán ya no lo trataba como antes. 3 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Jacob: «Vuélvete a la tierra de tus padres, donde están tus parientes, que yo estaré contigo.» 4 Jacob mandó llamar a Raquel y a Lea al campo donde estaba el rebaño, 5 y les dijo: —Me he dado cuenta de que su padre ya no me trata como antes. ¡Pero el Dios de mi padre ha estado conmigo! 6 Ustedes saben muy bien que yo he trabajado para su padre Labán con todas mis fuerzas. 7 No obstante, él me ha engañado y me ha cambiado el salario muchas veces.^[1] Pero Dios no le ha permitido causarme ningún daño. 8 Si él acordaba conmigo: “Los animales manchados serán tu salario”, todas las hembras tenían crías manchadas; y si él acordaba: “Los animales rayados serán tu salario”, todas las hembras tenían crías rayadas. 9 Así Dios le ha quitado el ganado al padre de ustedes, y me lo ha dado a mí. 10 »En cierta ocasión, durante la época en que los animales estaban en celo, tuve un sueño. En ese sueño veía que los chivos que cubrían a las cabras eran rayados, manchados o moteados. 11 En ese mismo sueño, el ángel de Dios me llamó: “¡Jacob!” Y yo le respondí: “Aquí estoy.” 12 Entonces él me dijo: “Fíjate bien, y te darás cuenta de que todos los chivos que cubren a las cabras son rayados, manchados o moteados. Yo he visto todo lo que te ha hecho Labán. 13 Yo soy el Dios de Betel, donde ungiste una estela y me hiciste una promesa. Vete ahora de esta tierra, y vuelve a la tierra de tu origen.” 14 Raquel y Lea le respondieron: —Ya no tenemos ninguna parte ni herencia en la casa de nuestro padre. 15 Al contrario, nos ha tratado como si fuéramos extranjeras. Nos ha vendido, y se ha gastado todo lo que recibió por nosotras. 16 Lo cierto es que toda la riqueza que Dios le ha quitado a nuestro padre es nuestra y de nuestros hijos. Por eso, haz ahora todo lo que Dios te ha ordenado. 17 Entonces Jacob se preparó y montó a sus hijos y a sus esposas en los camellos, 18 puso en marcha todo su ganado, junto con todos los bienes que había acumulado en Padán Aram,^[2] y se dirigió hacia la tierra de Canaán, donde vivía su padre Isaac. 19 Mientras Labán estaba ausente esquilando sus ovejas, Raquel aprovechó el momento para robarse los ídolos familiares. 20 Fue así como Jacob engañó a Labán el arameo y huyó sin decirle nada. 21 Jacob se escapó con todo lo que tenía. Una vez que cruzó el río Éufrates, se encaminó hacia la región montañosa de Galaad.

Labán persigue a Jacob

22 Al tercer día le informaron a Labán que Jacob se había escapado. 23 Entonces Labán reunió a sus parientes y lo persiguió durante siete días, hasta que lo alcanzó en los montes de Galaad. 24 Pero esa misma noche Dios se le apareció en un sueño a Labán el arameo, y le dijo: «¡Cuidado con amenazar a Jacob!» 25 Labán alcanzó a Jacob en los montes de Galaad, donde éste había acampado. También Labán acampó allí, junto con sus parientes, 26 y le reclamó a Jacob: —¿Qué has hecho? ¡Me has engañado, y te has llevado a mis hijas como si fueran prisioneras de guerra! 27 ¿Por qué has huido en secreto, con engaños y sin decirme nada? Yo te habría despedido con alegría, y con música de tambores y de arpa. 28 Ni siquiera me dejaste besar a mis hijas y a mis nietos. ¡Te has comportado como un necio! 29 Mi poder es más que suficiente para hacerles daño, pero anoche el Dios de tu padre me habló y me dijo: “¡Cuidado con amenazar a Jacob!” 30 Ahora bien, entiendo que hayas querido irte porque añoras la casa de tu padre, pero, ¿por qué me robaste mis dioses? 31 Jacob le respondió: —La verdad es que me entró mucho miedo, porque pensé que podrías quitarme a tus hijas por la fuerza. 32 Pero si encuentras tus dioses en poder de alguno de los que están aquí, tal persona no quedará con vida. Pongo a nuestros parientes como testigos: busca lo que sea tuyo, y llévatelo. Pero Jacob no sabía que Raquel se había robado los ídolos de Labán, 33 así que Labán entró en la carpa de Jacob, luego en la de Lea y en la de las dos criadas, pero no encontró lo que buscaba. Cuando salió de la carpa de Lea, entró en la de Raquel. 34 Pero Raquel, luego de tomar los ídolos y esconderlos bajo la montura del camello, se sentó sobre ellos. Labán los buscó por toda la carpa, pero no los encontró. 35 Entonces Raquel le dijo a su padre: —Por favor, no se enoje mi padre si no puedo levantarme ante usted, pero es que estoy en mi período de menstruación. Labán buscó los ídolos, pero no logró encontrarlos. 36 Entonces Jacob se enojó con Labán, e indignado le reclamó: —¿Qué crimen o pecado he cometido, para que me acoses de esta manera? 37 Ya has registrado todas mis cosas, ¿y acaso has encontrado algo que te pertenezca? Si algo has encontrado, ponlo aquí, frente a nuestros parientes, y que ellos determinen quién de los dos tiene la razón. 38 Durante los veinte años que estuve contigo, nunca abortaron tus ovejas ni tus cabras, ni jamás me comí un carnero de tus rebaños. 39 Nunca te traje un animal despedazado por las fieras, ya que yo mismo me hacía cargo de esa pérdida. Además, lo que se robaban de día o de noche, tú me lo reclamabas. 40 De día me consumía el calor, y de noche me moría de frío, y ni dormir podía. 41 De los veinte años que estuve en tu casa, catorce te serví por tus dos hijas, y seis por tu ganado, y muchas veces^[3] me cambiaste el salario. 42 Si no hubiera estado conmigo el Dios de mi padre, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios a quien Isaac temía, seguramente me habrías despedido con las manos vacías. Pero Dios vio mi aflicción y el trabajo de mis manos, y anoche me hizo justicia. 43 Labán le replicó a Jacob: —Estas mujeres son mis hijas, y estos muchachos son mis nietos; mías también son las ovejas; todo lo que ves me pertenece. Pero, ¿qué podría hacerles ahora a mis hijas y a mis nietos? 44 Hagamos un pacto tú y yo, y que ese pacto nos sirva como testimonio. 45 Entonces Jacob tomó una piedra, la levantó como una estela, 46 y les dijo a sus parientes: —¡Junten piedras! Ellos juntaron piedras, las amontonaron, y comieron allí, junto al montón de piedras. 47 A ese lugar Labán le puso por nombre Yegar Saduta, mientras que Jacob lo llamó Galaad.^[4] 48 —Este montón de piedras —declaró Labán— nos servirá de testimonio. Por eso se le llamó Galaad a ese lugar, 49 y también se le llamó Mizpa, porque Labán juró: —Que el Señor nos vigile cuando ya estemos lejos el uno del otro. 50 Si tú maltratas a mis hijas, o tomas otras mujeres que no sean ellas, recuerda que Dios es nuestro testigo, aunque no haya ningún otro testigo entre nosotros. 51 Mira este montón de piedras y la estela que he levantado entre nosotros —señaló Labán—. 52 Ambos serán testigos de que ni tú ni yo cruzaremos esta línea con el propósito de hacernos daño. 53 ¡Que el Dios de Abraham y el Dios de Najor sea nuestro juez! Entonces Jacob juró por el Dios a quien temía su padre Isaac. 54 Luego ofreció un sacrificio en lo alto de un monte, e invitó a sus parientes a participar en la comida. Después de que todos comieron, pasaron la noche allí. 55 A la madrugada del día siguiente Labán se levantó, besó y bendijo a sus nietos y a sus hijas, y regresó a su casa.
