Israele chiede un re

1 Quando Samuele divenne vecchio, nominò i suoi figli giudici d’Israele. 2 Suo figlio primogenito si chiamava Ioel e il secondo Abiia; essi esercitavano la funzione di giudici a Beer-Sceba. 3 I suoi figli però non seguivano le sue orme, ma si lasciavano sviare dall’avidità, accettavano regali e pervertivano il giudizio. 4 Allora tutti gli anziani d’Israele si radunarono e andarono da Samuele a Rama 5 per dirgli: «Ecco, tu sei ormai vecchio e i tuoi figli non seguono le tue orme; stabilisci dunque su di noi un re che ci amministri la giustizia, come lo hanno tutte le nazioni». 6 A Samuele dispiacque questa frase: «Dacci un re che amministri la giustizia in mezzo a noi». Perciò Samuele pregò il Signore. 7 Allora il Signore disse a Samuele: «Da’ ascolto alla voce del popolo in tutto quello che ti dirà, poiché essi non hanno respinto te, ma me, affinché io non regni su di loro. 8 Agiscono con te come hanno sempre agito dal giorno che li feci salire dall’Egitto fino a oggi: mi hanno abbandonato per servire altri dèi. 9 Ora dunque da’ ascolto alla loro voce; abbi cura però di avvertirli solennemente e di fare loro ben conoscere quale sarà il modo di agire del re che regnerà su di loro». 10 Samuele riferì tutte le parole del Signore al popolo che gli domandava un re. 11 Disse: «Questo sarà il modo di agire del re che regnerà su di voi. Egli prenderà i vostri figli e li metterà sui carri e fra i suoi cavalieri e dovranno correre davanti al suo carro; 12 ne farà dei capitani di migliaia e dei capitani di cinquantine; li metterà ad arare le sue terre e a mietere i suoi campi, a fabbricare le sue armi da guerra e gli attrezzi dei suoi carri. 13 Prenderà le vostre figlie per farsene delle profumiere, delle cuoche, delle fornaie. 14 Prenderà i vostri campi, le vostre vigne, i vostri migliori uliveti per darli ai suoi servitori. 15 Prenderà la decima delle vostre sementi e delle vostre vigne per darla ai suoi eunuchi e ai suoi servitori. 16 Prenderà i vostri servi, le vostre serve, il fiore della vostra gioventù e i vostri asini per adoperarli nei suoi lavori. 17 Prenderà la decima delle vostre greggi e voi sarete suoi schiavi. 18 Allora griderete a causa del re che vi sarete scelto, ma in quel giorno il Signore non vi risponderà». 19 Il popolo rifiutò di dare ascolto alle parole di Samuele e disse: «No! Ci sarà un re su di noi; 20 anche noi saremo come tutte le nazioni; il nostro re amministrerà la giustizia in mezzo a noi, marcerà alla nostra testa e condurrà le nostre guerre». 21 Samuele, udite tutte le parole del popolo, le riferì al Signore, 22 e il Signore disse a Samuele: «Da’ ascolto alla loro voce e fa’ regnare su di loro un re». Samuele disse agli uomini d’Israele: «Ognuno ritorni alla sua città».

Israel begehrt einen König

1 Als aber Samuel alt geworden war, setzte er seine Söhne als Richter über Israel ein. 2 Sein erstgeborener Sohn hieß Joel und der andere Abija; sie waren Richter zu Beerscheba. (1Cr 6,13) 3 Aber seine Söhne wandelten nicht in seinen Wegen, sondern suchten ihren Vorteil und nahmen Geschenke und beugten das Recht. (Eso 23,6; De 16,19) 4 Da versammelten sich alle Ältesten Israels und kamen nach Rama zu Samuel (1Sam 7,17) 5 und sprachen zu ihm: Siehe, du bist alt geworden, und deine Söhne wandeln nicht in deinen Wegen. So setze nun einen König über uns, der uns richte, wie ihn alle Völker haben. (De 17,14; At 13,21) 6 Das missfiel Samuel, dass sie sagten: Gib uns einen König, der uns richte. Und Samuel betete zum HERRN. 7 Der HERR aber sprach zu Samuel: Gehorche der Stimme des Volks in allem, was sie zu dir sagen; denn sie haben nicht dich, sondern mich verworfen, dass ich nicht mehr König über sie sein soll. 8 So wie sie immer getan haben von dem Tage an, da ich sie aus Ägypten führte, bis auf diesen Tag, dass sie mich verlassen und andern Göttern gedient haben, so tun sie nun auch dir. 9 So gehorche nun ihrer Stimme. Doch warne sie und verkünde ihnen das Recht des Königs, der über sie herrschen wird. 10 Und Samuel sagte alle Worte des HERRN dem Volk, das von ihm einen König forderte, 11 und sprach: Das wird des Königs Recht sein, der über euch herrschen wird: Eure Söhne wird er nehmen für seinen Wagen und seine Gespanne, und dass sie vor seinem Wagen herlaufen, 12 und zu Hauptleuten über Tausend und über Fünfzig, und dass sie ihm seinen Acker bearbeiten und seine Ernte einsammeln und dass sie seine Kriegswaffen machen und was zu seinen Wagen gehört. 13 Eure Töchter aber wird er nehmen, dass sie Salben bereiten, kochen und backen. 14 Eure besten Äcker und Weinberge und Ölgärten wird er nehmen und seinen Großen geben. 15 Dazu von euren Kornfeldern und Weinbergen wird er den Zehnten nehmen und seinen Kämmerern und Großen geben. 16 Und eure Knechte und Mägde und eure besten Rinder^[1] und eure Esel wird er nehmen und in seinen Dienst stellen. 17 Von euren Herden wird er den Zehnten nehmen, und ihr müsst seine Knechte sein. 18 Wenn ihr dann schreien werdet zu der Zeit über euren König, den ihr euch erwählt habt, so wird euch der HERR zu derselben Zeit nicht erhören. (Ez 8,18) 19 Aber das Volk weigerte sich, auf die Stimme Samuels zu hören, und sie sprachen: Nein, sondern ein König soll über uns sein, 20 dass wir auch seien wie alle Völker, dass uns unser König richte und vor uns her ausziehe und unsere Kriege führe! 21 Und als Samuel alle Worte des Volks gehört hatte, sagte er sie vor den Ohren des HERRN. 22 Der HERR aber sprach zu Samuel: Höre auf ihre Stimme und mache ihnen einen König. Und Samuel sprach zu den Männern Israels: Geht hin, ein jeder in seine Stadt.

1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba. 3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. 7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. 9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. 10 And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. 11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. 12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots. 13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. 14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them , and give them to his servants. 15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. 16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. 18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day. 19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; 20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. 21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD. 22 And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

Los israelitas piden un rey

1 Cuando Samuel entró en años, puso a sus hijos como gobernadores de Israel, 2 con sede en Berseba. El hijo mayor se llamaba Joel, y el segundo, Abías. 3 Pero ninguno de los dos siguió el ejemplo de su padre, sino que ambos se dejaron guiar por la avaricia, aceptando sobornos y pervirtiendo la justicia. 4 Por eso se reunieron los ancianos de Israel y fueron a Ramá para hablar con Samuel. 5 Le dijeron: «Tú has envejecido ya, y tus hijos no siguen tu ejemplo. Mejor danos un rey que nos gobierne, como lo tienen todas las naciones.» 6 Cuando le dijeron que querían tener un rey, Samuel se disgustó. Entonces se puso a orar al Señor, 7 pero el Señor le dijo: «Considera seriamente todo lo que el pueblo te diga. En realidad, no te han rechazado a ti, sino a mí, pues no quieren que yo reine sobre ellos. 8 Te están tratando del mismo modo que me han tratado a mí desde el día en que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy. Me han abandonado para servir a otros dioses. 9 Así que hazles caso, pero adviérteles claramente del poder que el rey va a ejercer sobre ellos.» 10 Samuel comunicó entonces el mensaje del Señor a la gente que le estaba pidiendo un rey. 11 Les explicó: —Esto es lo que hará el rey que va a ejercer el poder sobre ustedes: Les quitará a sus hijos para que se hagan cargo de los carros militares y de la caballería, y para que le abran paso al carro real. 12 Los hará comandantes y capitanes,^[1] y los pondrá a labrar y a cosechar, y a fabricar armamentos y pertrechos. 13 También les quitará a sus hijas para emplearlas como perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas. 14 Se apoderará de sus mejores campos, viñedos y olivares, y se los dará a sus ministros, 15 y a ustedes les exigirá una décima parte de sus cosechas y vendimias para entregársela a sus funcionarios y ministros. 16 Además, les quitará sus criados y criadas, y sus mejores bueyes^[2] y asnos, de manera que trabajen para él. 17 Les exigirá una décima parte de sus rebaños, y ustedes mismos le servirán como esclavos. 18 Cuando llegue aquel día, clamarán por causa del rey que hayan escogido, pero el Señor no les responderá. 19 El pueblo, sin embargo, no le hizo caso a Samuel, sino que protestó: —¡De ninguna manera! Queremos un rey que nos gobierne. 20 Así seremos como las otras naciones, con un rey que nos gobierne y que marche al frente de nosotros cuando vayamos a la guerra. 21 Después de oír lo que el pueblo quería, Samuel se lo comunicó al Señor. 22 —Hazles caso —respondió el Señor—; dales un rey. Entonces Samuel les dijo a los israelitas: —¡Regresen a sus pueblos!
