Guerra contro gli Amalechiti; secondo peccato di Saul

1 Samuele disse a Saul: «Il Signore mandò me per ungerti re del suo popolo, d’Israele; ascolta dunque quel che ti dice il Signore. 2 Così parla il Signore degli eserciti: “Io ricordo ciò che Amalec fece a Israele quando gli si oppose nel viaggio mentre saliva dall’Egitto. 3 Ora va’, sconfiggi Amalec, vota allo sterminio tutto ciò che gli appartiene; non lo risparmiare, ma uccidi uomini e donne, bambini e lattanti, buoi e pecore, cammelli e asini”». 4 Saul dunque convocò il popolo e ne fece la rassegna a Telaim: erano duecentomila fanti e diecimila uomini di Giuda. 5 Saul giunse alla città di Amalec, pose un’imboscata nella valle 6 e disse ai Chenei: «Andatevene, ritiratevi, allontanatevi dagli Amalechiti, perché io non vi distrugga insieme a loro; infatti voi vi comportaste amichevolmente verso tutti i figli d’Israele quando salirono dall’Egitto». Così i Chenei si ritirarono dagli Amalechiti. 7 Saul sconfisse gli Amalechiti da Avila fino a Sur, che sta di fronte all’Egitto; 8 prese vivo Agag, re degli Amalechiti, e votò allo sterminio tutto il popolo, passandolo a fil di spada. 9 Ma Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag e il meglio delle pecore, dei buoi e degli animali della seconda figliatura, gli agnelli e tutto quel che c’era di buono; non vollero votarli allo sterminio, ma votarono allo sterminio ogni cosa senza valore e inutile. 10 Allora la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Samuele, dicendo: 11 «Io mi pento di avere stabilito Saul re, perché si è allontanato da me e non ha eseguito i miei ordini». Samuele ne fu irritato e gridò al Signore tutta la notte. 12 Poi si alzò la mattina di buon’ora e andò a incontrare Saul; ma vennero a dire a Samuele: «Saul è andato a Carmel, e là si è fatto un monumento; poi se n’è ritornato e, passando da un’altra parte, è sceso a Ghilgal». 13 Samuele andò da Saul; e Saul gli disse: «Il Signore ti benedica! Ho eseguito l’ordine del Signore». 14 Samuele disse: «Che cos’è dunque questo belar di pecore che mi giunge agli orecchi e questo muggire di buoi che sento?» 15 Saul rispose: «Sono bestie condotte dal paese degli Amalechiti; perché il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio delle pecore e dei buoi per farne dei sacrifici al Signore, al tuo Dio; il resto, però, lo abbiamo votato allo sterminio». 16 Allora Samuele disse a Saul: «Basta! Io ti annuncerò quel che il Signore mi ha detto stanotte». Saul gli disse: «Parla». 17 Samuele disse: «Non è forse vero che quando ti consideravi piccolo sei diventato capo delle tribù d’Israele, e il Signore ti ha unto re d’Israele? 18 Il Signore ti aveva affidato una missione, dicendo: “Va’, vota allo sterminio quei peccatori degli Amalechiti, e fa’ loro guerra finché siano sterminati”. 19 Perché dunque non hai ubbidito alla voce del Signore? Perché ti sei gettato sul bottino e hai fatto ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore?» 20 Saul disse a Samuele: «Ma io ho ubbidito alla voce del Signore, ho compiuto la missione che il Signore mi aveva affidata, ho condotto qui Agag, re di Amalec, e ho votato allo sterminio gli Amalechiti; 21 ma il popolo ha preso, fra il bottino, delle pecore e dei buoi come primizie di ciò che doveva essere sterminato, per farne dei sacrifici al Signore, al tuo Dio, a Ghilgal». 22 Samuele disse: «Il Signore gradisce forse gli olocausti e i sacrifici quanto l’ubbidire alla sua voce? No, l’ubbidire è meglio del sacrificio, dare ascolto vale più che il grasso dei montoni; 23 infatti la ribellione è come il peccato della divinazione, e l’ostinatezza è come l’adorazione degli idoli e degli dèi domestici^[1]. Poiché tu hai rigettato la parola del Signore, anch’egli ti rigetta come re». 24 Allora Saul disse a Samuele: «Ho peccato, perché ho trasgredito il comandamento del Signore e le tue parole, perché ho temuto il popolo e ho dato ascolto alla sua voce. 25 Ti prego dunque, perdona il mio peccato, ritorna con me e mi prostrerò davanti al Signore». 26 Ma Samuele disse a Saul: «Non ritornerò con te, poiché hai rigettato la parola del Signore e il Signore ha rigettato te perché tu non regni più sopra Israele». 27 Come Samuele si voltava per andarsene, Saul lo prese per il lembo del mantello, che si strappò. 28 Allora Samuele gli disse: «Il Signore strappa oggi di dosso a te il regno d’Israele e lo dà a un altro, migliore di te. 29 Colui che è la gloria d’Israele non mentirà e non si pentirà; egli infatti non è un uomo perché debba pentirsi». 30 Allora Saul disse: «Ho peccato; ma tu adesso onorami, ti prego, in presenza degli anziani del mio popolo e in presenza d’Israele; ritorna con me e mi prostrerò davanti al Signore, al tuo Dio». 31 Samuele dunque ritornò, seguendo Saul, e Saul si prostrò davanti al Signore. 32 Poi Samuele disse: «Conducetemi qui Agag, re degli Amalechiti». Agag andò da lui fiducioso, pensando: «Certo, l’amarezza della morte è passata». 33 Samuele gli disse: «Come la tua spada ha privato le donne di figli, così tua madre sarà privata di figli fra le donne». E Samuele fece squartare Agag in presenza del Signore a Ghilgal. 34 Poi Samuele andò a Rama e Saul salì a casa sua, a Ghibea di Saul. 35 Samuele, finché visse, non andò più a vedere Saul, perché Samuele faceva cordoglio per Saul; e il Signore si pentiva di aver fatto Saul re d’Israele.

1 Samuel sprach zu Saul: Der HERR hat mich gesandt, dass ich dich zum König salben sollte über sein Volk Israel; so höre nun auf die Worte des HERRN! (1Sam 10,1) 2 So spricht der HERR Zebaoth: Ich habe bedacht, was Amalek Israel angetan und wie es ihm den Weg verlegt hat, als Israel aus Ägypten zog. (Eso 17,8; De 25,17) 3 So zieh nun hin und schlag Amalek. Und vollstreckt den Bann an allem, was es hat; verschone sie nicht, sondern töte Mann und Frau, Kinder und Säuglinge, Rinder und Schafe, Kamele und Esel. (Le 27,29) 4 Da bot Saul das Volk auf, und er musterte sie zu Telaim: zweihunderttausend Mann Fußvolk und zehntausend Mann aus Juda. 5 Und als Saul zu der Stadt der Amalekiter kam, legte er einen Hinterhalt im Bachtal. 6 Und Saul ließ den Kenitern sagen: Geht, weicht und zieht weg von den Amalekitern, dass ich euch nicht mit ihnen aufreibe; denn ihr tatet Barmherzigkeit an allen Israeliten, als sie aus Ägypten zogen. Da zogen die Keniter fort von den Amalekitern. (Giudic 1,16) 7 Da schlug Saul die Amalekiter von Hawila bis nach Schur, das vor Ägypten liegt, 8 und nahm Agag, den König von Amalek, lebendig gefangen, und an allem Volk vollstreckte er den Bann mit der Schärfe des Schwerts. (Nu 24,7) 9 Aber Saul und das Volk verschonten Agag und die besten Schafe und Rinder und das Mastvieh und die Lämmer und alles, was von Wert war, und sie wollten den Bann daran nicht vollstrecken; was aber nichts taugte und gering war, daran vollstreckten sie den Bann. 10 Da geschah des HERRN Wort zu Samuel: 11 Es reut mich, dass ich Saul zum König gemacht habe; denn er hat sich von mir abgewandt und meine Befehle nicht erfüllt. Darüber wurde Samuel zornig und schrie zu dem HERRN die ganze Nacht. (Gen 6,6) 12 Und Samuel machte sich früh auf, um Saul am Morgen zu begegnen. Und ihm wurde angesagt, dass Saul nach Karmel gekommen wäre und sich ein Siegeszeichen aufgerichtet hätte und weitergezogen und nach Gilgal hinabgekommen wäre. (Gios 15,55) 13 Als nun Samuel zu Saul kam, sprach Saul zu ihm: Gesegnet seist du vom HERRN! Ich habe des HERRN Wort erfüllt. 14 Samuel antwortete: Was ist denn das für ein Blöken von Schafen in meinen Ohren und ein Brüllen von Rindern, das ich höre? 15 Saul sprach: Von den Amalekitern hat man sie gebracht; denn das Volk verschonte die besten Schafe und Rinder, um sie zu opfern dem HERRN, deinem Gott; an dem andern haben wir den Bann vollstreckt. 16 Samuel aber antwortete Saul: Halt ein, ich will dir sagen, was der HERR mit mir diese Nacht geredet hat. Er sprach: Sag an! 17 Samuel sprach: Ist’s nicht so: Auch wenn du vor dir selbst gering warst, bist du doch das Haupt der Stämme Israels; denn der HERR hat dich zum König über Israel gesalbt. (1Sam 9,21) 18 Und der HERR sandte dich auf den Weg und sprach: Zieh hin und vollstrecke den Bann an den Sündern, den Amalekitern, und kämpfe mit ihnen, bis du sie vertilgt hast! 19 Warum hast du der Stimme des HERRN nicht gehorcht, sondern hast dich an die Beute gemacht und getan, was dem HERRN missfiel? 20 Saul antwortete Samuel: Ich habe doch der Stimme des HERRN gehorcht und bin den Weg gezogen, den mich der HERR sandte, und habe Agag, den König von Amalek, hergebracht und an den Amalekitern den Bann vollstreckt. 21 Aber das Volk hat von der Beute genommen Schafe und Rinder, das Beste vom Gebannten, um es dem HERRN, deinem Gott, zu opfern in Gilgal. 22 Samuel aber sprach: Meinst du, dass der HERR Gefallen habe am Brandopfer und Schlachtopfer gleichwie am Gehorsam gegen die Stimme des HERRN? Siehe, Gehorsam ist besser als Opfer und Aufmerken besser als das Fett von Widdern. (Prov 21,3; Ec 4,17; Is 1,11; Ger 7,22; Os 6,6; Am 5,21; Mi 6,6; Mat 9,13; Mat 12,7)

23 Denn Ungehorsam ist Sünde wie Zauberei, und Widerstreben ist wie Abgötterei und Götzendienst. Weil du des HERRN Wort verworfen hast, hat er dich auch verworfen, dass du nicht mehr König seist. (1Sam 16,1) 24 Da sprach Saul zu Samuel: Ich habe gesündigt, dass ich des HERRN Befehl und deine Worte übertreten habe; denn ich fürchtete das Volk und gehorchte ihrer Stimme. (Eso 10,16; Gios 7,20; 2Sam 12,13) 25 Und nun, vergib mir doch meine Sünde und kehre mit mir um, dass ich den HERRN anbete. 26 Samuel sprach zu Saul: Ich will nicht mit dir umkehren; denn du hast des HERRN Wort verworfen, und der HERR hat dich auch verworfen, dass du nicht mehr König seist über Israel. 27 Und als sich Samuel umwandte, um wegzugehen, ergriff ihn Saul bei einem Zipfel seines Rocks; aber der riss ab. 28 Da sprach Samuel zu ihm: Der HERR hat das Königtum Israels heute von dir gerissen und einem andern gegeben, der besser ist als du. (1Sam 13,14; 1Sam 28,17) 29 Auch lügt der nicht, der Israels Ruhm ist, und es gereut ihn nicht; denn er ist nicht ein Mensch, dass ihn etwas gereuen könnte. (Nu 23,19) 30 Saul aber sprach: Ich habe gesündigt; aber ehre mich doch jetzt vor den Ältesten meines Volks und vor Israel und kehre mit mir um, dass ich den HERRN, deinen Gott, anbete. 31 Da kehrte Samuel um und folgte Saul, und Saul betete den HERRN an. 32 Und Samuel sprach: Bringt Agag, den König von Amalek, zu mir! Und Agag ging hin zu ihm in Fesseln und sprach: Wahrlich, die Bitterkeit des Todes ist gewichen. 33 Samuel aber sprach: Wie dein Schwert Frauen ihrer Kinder beraubt hat, so soll auch deine Mutter der Kinder beraubt sein unter den Frauen. Und Samuel hieb den Agag in Stücke vor dem HERRN in Gilgal. 34 Und Samuel ging hin nach Rama; Saul aber zog hinauf in sein Haus zu Gibea Sauls. 35 Und Samuel sah Saul fortan nicht mehr bis an den Tag seines Todes. Aber doch trug Samuel Leid um Saul, weil es den HERRN gereut hatte, dass er Saul zum König über Israel gemacht hatte.

1 Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD. 2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. 4 And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley. 6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. 34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. 35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.

El Señor rechaza a Saúl

1 Un día Samuel le dijo a Saúl: «El Señor me envió a ungirte como rey sobre su pueblo Israel. Así que pon atención al mensaje del Señor. 2 Así dice el Señor Todopoderoso: “He decidido castigar a los amalecitas por lo que le hicieron a Israel, pues no lo dejaron pasar cuando salía de Egipto. 3 Así que ve y ataca a los amalecitas ahora mismo. Destruye por completo todo lo que les pertenezca; no les tengas compasión. Mátalos a todos, hombres y mujeres, niños y recién nacidos, toros y ovejas, camellos y asnos.” » 4 Saúl reunió al ejército y le pasó revista en Telayin: eran doscientos mil soldados de infantería más diez mil soldados de Judá. 5 Luego se dirigió a la ciudad de Amalec y tendió una emboscada en el barranco. 6 Los quenitas se apartaron de los amalecitas, pues Saúl les dijo: «¡Váyanse de aquí! Salgan y apártense de los amalecitas. Ustedes fueron bondadosos con todos los israelitas cuando ellos salieron de Egipto. Luego dio una vuelta y continuó hacia Guilgal.» 13 Cuando Samuel llegó, Saúl le dijo: —¡Que el Señor te bendiga! He cumplido las instrucciones del Señor. 14 —Y entonces, ¿qué significan esos balidos de oveja que me parece oír? —le reclamó Samuel—. ¿Y cómo es que oigo mugidos de vaca? 15 —Son las que nuestras tropas trajeron del país de Amalec —respondió Saúl—. Dejaron con vida a las mejores ovejas y vacas para ofrecerlas al Señor tu Dios, pero todo lo demás lo destruimos. 16 ¡Basta! —lo interrumpió Samuel—. Voy a comunicarte lo que el Señor me dijo anoche. —Te escucho —respondió Saúl. 17 Entonces Samuel le dijo: —¿No es cierto que, aunque te creías poca cosa, has llegado a ser jefe de las tribus de Israel? ¿No fue el Señor quien te ungió como rey de Israel, 18 y te envió a cumplir una misión? Él te dijo: “Ve y destruye a esos pecadores, los amalecitas. Atácalos hasta acabar con ellos.” 19 ¿Por qué, entonces, no obedeciste al Señor? ¿Por qué echaste mano del botín e hiciste lo que ofende al Señor? 20 —¡Yo sí he obedecido al Señor! —insistió Saúl—. He cumplido la misión que él me encomendó. Traje prisionero a Agag, rey de Amalec, pero destruí a los amalecitas. 21 Y del botín, los soldados tomaron ovejas y vacas con el propósito de ofrecerlas en Guilgal al Señor tu Dios. 22 Samuel respondió: «¿Qué le agrada más al Señor: que se le ofrezcan holocaustos y sacrificios, o que se obedezca lo que él dice? El obedecer vale más que el sacrificio, y el prestar atención, más que la grasa de carneros. 23 La rebeldía es tan grave como la adivinación, y la arrogancia, como el pecado de la idolatría. Y como tú has rechazado la palabra del Señor, él te ha rechazado como rey.» 24 —¡He pecado! —admitió Saúl—. He quebrantado el mandato del Señor y tus instrucciones. Los soldados me intimidaron y les hice caso. 25 Pero te ruego que perdones mi pecado, y que regreses conmigo para adorar al Señor. 26 —No voy a regresar contigo —le respondió Samuel—. Tú has rechazado la palabra del Señor, y él te ha rechazado como rey de Israel. 27 Cuando Samuel se dio vuelta para irse, Saúl le agarró el borde del manto, y se lo arrancó. 28 Entonces Samuel le dijo: —Hoy mismo el Señor ha arrancado de tus manos el reino de Israel, y se lo ha entregado a otro más digno que tú. 29 En verdad, el que es la Gloria de Israel no miente ni cambia de parecer, pues no es hombre para que se arrepienta. 30 —¡He pecado! —respondió Saúl—. Pero te pido que por ahora me sigas reconociendo ante los ancianos de mi pueblo y ante todo Israel. Regresa conmigo para adorar al Señor tu Dios. 31 Samuel regresó con él, y Saúl adoró al Señor. 32 Luego dijo Samuel: —Tráiganme a Agag, rey de Amalec. Agag se le acercó muy confiado, pues pensaba: «Sin duda que el trago amargo de la muerte ya pasó.» 33 Pero Samuel le dijo: —Ya que tu espada dejó a tantas mujeres sin hijos, también sin su hijo se quedará tu madre. Y allí en Guilgal, en presencia del Señor, Samuel descuartizó a Agag. 34 Luego regresó a Ramá, mientras que Saúl se fue a su casa en Guibeá de Saúl. 35 Y como el Señor se había arrepentido de haber hecho a Saúl rey de Israel, nunca más volvió Samuel a ver a Saúl, sino que hizo duelo por él.
