1Or la carestia era grave nel paese.2Quando ebbero finito di mangiare il grano che avevano portato dall’Egitto, il padre disse loro: «Tornate a comprare un po’ di viveri».3E Giuda rispose: «Quell’uomo ce lo dichiarò categoricamente: “Non vedrete la mia faccia se vostro fratello non sarà con voi”.4Se tu mandi nostro fratello con noi, scenderemo e ti compreremo dei viveri;5ma se non lo mandi non scenderemo, perché quell’uomo ci ha detto: “Non vedrete la mia faccia se vostro fratello non sarà con voi”».6Israele disse: «Perché mi avete fatto questo torto di dire a quell’uomo che avevate ancora un fratello?»7Quelli risposero: «Quell’uomo c’interrogò minuziosamente intorno a noi e al nostro parentado, dicendo: “Vostro padre vive ancora? Avete qualche altro fratello?” Noi gli rispondemmo secondo le sue domande. Non potevamo sapere che ci avrebbe detto: “Fate venire vostro fratello!”»8Giuda disse a suo padre Israele: «Lascia venire il ragazzo con me; ci leveremo e andremo, così vivremo e non moriremo: né noi, né tu, né i nostri piccini.9Io mi rendo garante di lui. Ridomandane conto alla mia mano. Se non te lo riconduco e non te lo rimetto davanti, io sarò per sempre colpevole verso di te.10Se non avessimo indugiato, a quest’ora saremmo già tornati due volte».11Allora Israele, loro padre, disse loro: «Se così è, fate questo: prendete nei vostri sacchi le cose più squisite di questo paese e portate a quell’uomo un dono: un po’ di balsamo, un po’ di miele, degli aromi e della mirra, dei pistacchi e delle mandorle.12Prendete con voi il doppio del denaro, e riportate il denaro che fu rimesso alla bocca dei vostri sacchi; forse fu un errore.13Prendete anche vostro fratello e andate, tornate da quell’uomo.14Dio onnipotente vi faccia trovare grazia davanti a quell’uomo, così che egli vi rilasci l’altro vostro fratello e Beniamino. Se devo essere privato dei miei figli, che io lo sia!»15Quelli presero dunque questo dono, presero con sé il doppio del denaro e Beniamino, e partirono; scesero in Egitto e si presentarono davanti a Giuseppe.16Come Giuseppe vide Beniamino con loro, disse al suo maggiordomo: «Conduci questi uomini in casa, macella e prepara tutto, perché questi uomini mangeranno con me a mezzogiorno».17L’uomo fece come Giuseppe aveva ordinato e li condusse in casa di Giuseppe.18E quelli ebbero paura, perché venivano condotti in casa di Giuseppe, e dissero: «Siamo portati qui a motivo di quel denaro che ci fu rimesso nei sacchi la prima volta; egli vuole darci addosso, piombare su di noi e prenderci come schiavi con i nostri asini».19Avvicinatisi al maggiordomo di Giuseppe, gli parlarono sulla porta della casa e dissero:20«Scusa, signor mio! Noi scendemmo già una prima volta a comprare dei viveri,21e avvenne che, quando fummo giunti al luogo dove pernottammo, aprimmo i sacchi, ed ecco, il denaro di ciascuno di noi era alla bocca del suo sacco: il nostro denaro del peso esatto; e l’abbiamo riportato con noi.22Ma abbiamo portato con noi altro denaro per comprare dei viveri. Non sappiamo chi abbia messo il nostro denaro nei nostri sacchi».23Egli disse: «Datevi pace, non temete; il vostro Dio e il Dio di vostro padre ha messo un tesoro nei vostri sacchi. Io ho avuto il vostro denaro». E, fatto uscire Simeone, lo condusse da loro.24Quell’uomo li fece entrare in casa di Giuseppe, diede loro dell’acqua ed essi si lavarono i piedi; ed egli diede del foraggio ai loro asini.25Poi essi prepararono il dono, aspettando che Giuseppe venisse a mezzogiorno; perché avevano sentito che sarebbero rimasti lì a mangiare.26Quando Giuseppe venne a casa, quelli gli porsero il dono che avevano portato con sé nella casa, e s’inchinarono fino a terra davanti a lui.27Egli domandò loro come stavano e disse: «Vostro padre, il vecchio di cui mi parlaste, sta bene? Vive ancora?»28Quelli risposero: «Nostro padre tuo servo sta bene, vive ancora». Poi s’inchinarono e gli fecero riverenza.29Giuseppe alzò gli occhi, vide Beniamino suo fratello, figlio di sua madre, e disse: «È questo il vostro fratello più giovane di cui mi avete parlato?» Poi disse a lui: «Dio ti sia propizio, figlio mio!»30E Giuseppe s’affrettò a uscire, perché si era commosso nell’intimo per suo fratello; cercava un luogo dove piangere. Entrò nella sua camera e pianse.31Poi si lavò la faccia e uscì, si fece forza e disse: «Portate il pranzo».32Fu dunque portato il cibo per lui a parte, per loro a parte e per gli Egiziani che mangiavano con loro a parte; perché gli Egiziani non possono mangiare con gli Ebrei; per gli Egiziani è cosa abominevole.33Ma essi sedevano di fronte a lui, dal primogenito, secondo il suo diritto di primogenitura, fino al più giovane secondo la sua età; e si guardavano l’un l’altro stupiti.34Giuseppe fece loro portare delle vivande che aveva davanti a sé; ma la porzione di Beniamino era cinque volte maggiore di quella d’ogni altro di loro. Bevvero e stettero allegri con lui.
1Die Hungersnot in Kanaan wurde immer drückender.2Bald war das Getreide aufgebraucht, das sie aus Ägypten mitgebracht hatten. »Geht wieder nach Ägypten und kauft etwas!«, bat Jakob seine Söhne.3-5Juda erwiderte: »Der Mann hat uns ausdrücklich gesagt: ›Lasst euch nicht mehr hier blicken, außer ihr bringt euren Bruder mit!‹ Wir können also nur gehen und Getreide kaufen, wenn du Benjamin mit uns kommen lässt! Sonst hat unsere Reise keinen Sinn.«6»Warum habt ihr dem Mann überhaupt erzählt, dass ihr noch einen Bruder habt? Musstet ihr mir das antun?«, fragte Jakob.7»Der Mann hat sich genau nach unserer Familie erkundigt«, entgegneten sie. »Er wollte wissen, ob unser Vater noch lebt und ob wir noch einen Bruder haben. Konnten wir denn ahnen, dass er sagen würde: ›Bringt euren Bruder mit‹?«8Juda schlug vor: »Vertrau mir den Jungen an! Dann können wir losziehen, und keiner von uns muss verhungern.9Ich übernehme für ihn die volle Verantwortung. Wenn ich ihn dir nicht gesund zurückbringe, will ich mein Leben lang die Schuld dafür tragen!10Wir könnten schon zweimal wieder hier sein, wenn wir nicht so lange gezögert hätten!«11Da gab Jakob nach: »Wenn es sein muss, dann nehmt Benjamin mit. Bringt dem Mann etwas von den besten Erzeugnissen unseres Landes: kostbare Harze[1], außerdem Honig, Pistazien und Mandeln.12Nehmt doppelt so viel Geld mit, wie ihr braucht, und gebt den Betrag zurück, der oben in euren Säcken lag. Vielleicht war es ja nur ein Versehen.13Macht euch mit Benjamin auf den Weg.14Ich bete zum allmächtigen Gott, dass der ägyptische Herrscher Mitleid mit euch hat und Simeon und Benjamin freigibt. Und wenn ich meine Kinder verliere, dann muss es wohl so sein!«15Die Brüder nahmen die Geschenke und den doppelten Geldbetrag und zogen mit Benjamin nach Ägypten. Dort meldeten sie sich bei Josef.16Als Josef sah, dass Benjamin dabei war, sagte er zu seinem Hausverwalter: »Diese Männer werden heute Mittag mit mir essen. Führe sie in meinen Palast, schlachte ein Tier und bereite ein gutes Essen vor!«17Als der Verwalter die Brüder aufforderte, ihm in Josefs Palast zu folgen,18erschraken sie. »Sicher werden wir dort hineingeführt, weil das Geld in unseren Säcken war!«, dachten sie. »Jetzt werden sie uns überwältigen, die Esel wegnehmen und uns zu Sklaven machen!«19Am Eingang zum Palast sagten sie zu dem Verwalter:20»Bitte, Herr, wir waren schon einmal hier, um Getreide zu kaufen.21Auf dem Rückweg übernachteten wir in einer Herberge. Als wir dort unsere Getreidesäcke öffneten, lag in jedem das Geld, mit dem wir bezahlt hatten. Jetzt haben wir es wieder mitgebracht,22zusammen mit neuem Geld, um noch einmal Getreide zu kaufen. Wir können wirklich nicht sagen, wer das Geld in unsere Säcke getan hat!«23»Macht euch keine Sorgen, es ist alles in Ordnung«, beruhigte sie der Hausverwalter. »Euer Gott muss es heimlich hineingelegt haben, denn ich habe euer Geld bekommen!« Dann brachte er Simeon zu ihnen24und führte sie in den Palast. Dort gab er ihnen Wasser, damit sie sich die Füße waschen konnten, und fütterte ihre Esel.25Sie nutzten die Zeit, um ihre Geschenke für Josef zurechtzulegen; inzwischen hatten sie nämlich erfahren, dass sie mit ihm zu Mittag essen würden.26Als Josef eintrat, überreichten sie ihm die Geschenke und warfen sich vor ihm nieder.27Er erkundigte sich, wie es ihnen ging. »Was macht euer alter Vater, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt?«, fragte er. »Lebt er noch?«28»Ja, Herr«, antworteten sie, »und es geht ihm gut.« Dann warfen sie sich erneut vor ihm nieder.29Josef sah seinen Bruder Benjamin an, den Sohn seiner eigenen Mutter, und fragte: »Das ist also euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt? Gott segne dich!«30Der Anblick Benjamins bewegte ihn so sehr, dass ihm die Tränen kamen. Er lief hinaus und weinte in seinem Zimmer.31Dann wusch er sein Gesicht und ging wieder zurück. Mühsam beherrschte er sich und befahl seinen Dienern, das Essen aufzutragen.32Josef hatte einen eigenen Tisch, die Brüder aßen an einem anderen, und an einem dritten saßen die Ägypter, die mit dabei waren. Ihre Religion verbot es den Ägyptern nämlich, mit den Hebräern an einem Tisch zu essen, weil sie dadurch unrein würden.33Josefs Brüder saßen ihm gegenüber. Jeder hatte seinen Platz zugewiesen bekommen, und zwar genau nach der Reihenfolge ihres Alters. Sie blickten sich erstaunt an.34Als Zeichen der besonderen Ehre ließ Josef ihnen von den Gerichten auftragen, die auf seinem Tisch standen. Benjamin bekam einen sehr großen Anteil – fünfmal so viel wie seine Brüder! Dazu tranken sie Wein. Es war eine fröhliche Feier.

(Gen 41,54; Gen 41,57)2And when they had eaten the grain that they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.”3But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’ (Gen 42,20; Gen 44,23)4If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.5But if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’”6Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly as to tell the man that you had another brother?”7They replied, “The man questioned us carefully about ourselves and our kindred, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ What we told him was in answer to these questions. Could we in any way know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”8And Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones. (Gen 42,2)9I will be a pledge of his safety. From my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever. (Gen 42,37; Gen 44,32)10If we had not delayed, we would now have returned twice.”11Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry a present down to the man, a little balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds. (Gen 37,25)12Take double the money with you. Carry back with you the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. (Gen 42,25; Gen 42,27; Gen 42,35)13Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man.14May God Almighty[1] grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” (Gen 17,1; Gen 42,36; Ne 1,11)15So the men took this present, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.” (Gen 24,2; Gen 39,4; Gen 43,19; Gen 44,1; Gen 44,4)17The man did as Joseph told him and brought the men to Joseph’s house.18And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph’s house, and they said, “It is because of the money, which was replaced in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may assault us and fall upon us to make us servants and seize our donkeys.”19So they went up to the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke with him at the door of the house,20and said, “Oh, my lord, we came down the first time to buy food. (Gen 42,3; Gen 42,10; Gen 44,18)21And when we came to the lodging place we opened our sacks, and there was each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. So we have brought it again with us, (Gen 42,27)22and we have brought other money down with us to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.”23He replied, “Peace to you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has put treasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.24And when the man had brought the men into Joseph’s house and given them water, and they had washed their feet, and when he had given their donkeys fodder, (Gen 18,4)25they prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. (Gen 43,11)26When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present that they had with them and bowed down to him to the ground. (Gen 37,5; Gen 42,6)27And he inquired about their welfare and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?” (Gen 42,11; Gen 42,13)28They said, “Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.” And they bowed their heads and prostrated themselves. (Gen 43,26)29And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!” (Gen 35,18; Gen 43,27)30Then Joseph hurried out, for his compassion grew warm for his brother, and he sought a place to weep. And he entered his chamber and wept there. (Gen 42,24; 1Re 3,26; Ger 31,20)31Then he washed his face and came out. And controlling himself he said, “Serve the food.” (Gen 45,1)32They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. (Gen 46,34; Eso 8,26)33And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth. And the men looked at one another in amazement.34Portions were taken to them from Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry[2] with him. (Gen 45,22; 2Sam 11,8)
1Pero la hambruna era grave en aquella tierra.2Y ocurrió que, cuando acabaron de comer el grano que habían traído de Egipto, su padre les dijo: Volved y compradnos un poco de alimento.3Y Judá le respondió, diciendo: Aquel hombre nos advirtió seriamente, diciendo: No veréis mi rostro a menos que vuestro hermano venga con vosotros.4Si envías a nuestro hermano con nosotros, bajaremos y te compraremos alimento,5pero si no lo envías, no bajaremos, porque aquel hombre nos dijo: No veréis mi rostro, a menos que vuestro hermano esté con vosotros.6Y dijo Israel: ¿Por qué me hicisteis tanto mal declarando a ese hombre que teníais otro hermano?7Y ellos dijeron: Aquel hombre nos preguntó expresamente acerca de nosotros y de nuestra parentela, diciendo: ¿Vive aún vuestro padre? ¿Tenéis otro hermano? Y le declaramos conforme a estas preguntas. ¿Acaso sabíamos nosotros que él diría: Haced bajar a vuestro hermano?8Judá dijo a Israel su padre: Envía al muchacho conmigo, así nos levantaremos e iremos para que vivamos y no muramos también nosotros, también tú, y también nuestros pequeños.9Yo salgo fiador por él, a mí mismo me pedirás cuentas de él. Si no te lo devuelvo y te lo pongo delante, seré culpable ante ti todos los días.10Si no nos hubiéramos demorado, ciertamente ya habríamos vuelto dos veces.11Respondió su padre Israel: Si tiene que ser así, hacedlo. Tomad de lo mejor de la tierra en vuestras bolsas y llevad obsequios a aquel hombre, un poco de bálsamo, y un poco de miel, especias y mirra, nueces y almendras.12Tomad en vuestras manos el doble de la plata, y llevad en vuestra mano la plata devuelta en las bocas de vuestros costales, pues quizá fue un error.13Tomad a vuestro hermano, levantaos y volved ante aquel hombre.14Y que ’El-Shadday os conceda gran misericordia ante aquel hombre, y os suelte a vuestro otro hermano, y a Benjamín. Y si he de quedar privado de hijos, ¡privado de hijos quede!15Los hombres entonces, tomando los obsequios, el doble de plata en su mano, y a Benjamín, se levantaron y bajaron a Egipto para presentarse ante José.16Cuando José vio con ellos a Benjamín, dijo al que estaba a cargo de su casa: Haz entrar a esos varones en la casa, degüella un animal y prepáralo, porque estos varones comerán conmigo a mediodía.17El hombre hizo como José había dicho, y los hizo entrar en casa de José.18Los hombres tuvieron temor cuando se vieron conducidos a casa de José, pues decían: Por el asunto de la plata que fue devuelta en nuestros costales la vez primera somos traídos acá, para atacarnos y abalanzarse sobre nosotros y tomarnos como esclavos a nosotros y a nuestros asnos.19Entonces se acercaron al hombre que estaba a cargo de la casa de José, y le hablaron a la puerta de la casa,20y dijeron: ¡Ay, señor mío! Nosotros ciertamente bajamos al comienzo a comprar alimento,21pero sucedió que cuando llegamos a la posada y abrimos nuestros costales, he aquí la plata de cada uno estaba en la boca de su costal, nuestra plata en su justo peso. Por eso la hemos vuelto traer en nuestras manos.22Y hemos tomado otra plata en nuestras manos para comprar alimento, no sabemos quién puso nuestra plata en nuestros costales.23Y él respondió: Paz a vosotros, no temáis. Vuestro Dios y el Dios de vuestro padre os dio un tesoro escondido en vuestros costales, vuestra plata llegó a mí. Y les sacó a Simeón.24Entonces el hombre hizo entrar a aquellos varones en casa de José, y les dio agua y lavaron sus pies, y dio forraje a sus asnos.25Y ellos prepararon el presente para la llegada de José al mediodía, pues oyeron que allí habrían de comer los alimentos.26Cuando José llegó a la casa, ellos le presentaron dentro de la casa los regalos que tenían en sus manos, y se postraron a tierra ante él.27Entonces les preguntó cómo estaban, y dijo: ¿Está bien vuestro padre, el anciano del cual hablasteis? ¿Vive aún?28Y ellos dijeron: Tu siervo, nuestro padre, está bien, aún vive. E hicieron reverencia y se postraron.29Y él alzó sus ojos y vio a su hermano Benjamín, hijo de su madre, y dijo: ¿Es éste vuestro hermano menor, de quien me dijisteis? Y añadió: ’Elohim te haga misericordia, hijo mío.30Y José se apresuró a salir, porque sus entrañas estaban conmovidas por causa de su hermano, y buscó dónde llorar, y entró en la recámara, y allí lloró.31Después se lavó el rostro y salió, y refrenándose, ordenó: ¡Poned alimentos!32Pero lo pusieron separadamente, para ellos aparte, y por separado para los egipcios que comían con él, pues los egipcios no podían comer alimentos con los hebreos, porque era abominación para los egipcios.33Y ellos se sentaron ante él, el primogénito conforme a su primogenitura, y el menor conforme a su menor edad. Y aquellos varones estaban atónitos, mirándose el uno al otro.34Luego él tomó porciones de delante de sí para ellos, pero la porción de Benjamín era cinco veces mayor que las porciones de todos ellos. Y bebieron, y se embriagaron con él.
