1Giacobbe seppe che c’era grano in Egitto; allora disse ai suoi figli: «Perché state a guardarvi l’un l’altro?»2Poi disse: «Ecco, ho sentito dire che c’è grano in Egitto; scendete là a comprarne, così vivremo e non moriremo».3Così dieci dei fratelli di Giuseppe scesero in Egitto per comprarvi il grano.4Ma Giacobbe non mandò con loro Beniamino, il fratello di Giuseppe, perché diceva: «Che non gli succeda qualche disgrazia!»5I figli d’Israele giunsero per comprare grano in mezzo agli altri che erano venuti; perché nel paese di Canaan c’era la carestia.6Or Giuseppe era colui che comandava nel paese; era lui che vendeva il grano a tutta la gente del paese. Ecco, il più giovane è oggi con nostro padre, e uno non è più».14E Giuseppe disse loro: «La cosa è come vi ho detto, siete delle spie!15Ecco come sarete messi alla prova: per la vita del faraone, non uscirete di qui fin tanto che non sarà arrivato il vostro fratello più giovane.16Mandate uno di voi a prendere vostro fratello e voi resterete qui in carcere, perché le vostre parole siano messe alla prova e si veda se c’è del vero in voi; se no, per la vita del faraone, siete delle spie!»17E li mise assieme in prigione per tre giorni.18Il terzo giorno Giuseppe disse loro: «Fate questo e vivrete; io temo Dio!19Se siete gente sincera, uno di voi fratelli resti qui incatenato nella vostra prigione; e voi andate, portate il grano necessario alle vostre famiglie.20Poi conducetemi il vostro fratello più giovane; così le vostre parole saranno verificate e voi non morirete». Ed essi fecero così.21Allora si dicevano l’uno all’altro: «Sì, noi fummo colpevoli verso nostro fratello, giacché vedemmo la sua angoscia quando egli ci supplicava, ma non gli demmo ascolto! Ecco perché ci viene addosso quest’angoscia».22Ruben rispose loro: «Non ve lo dicevo io: “Non commettete questo peccato contro il ragazzo?” Ma voi non voleste darmi ascolto. Perciò, ecco, il suo sangue ci è ridomandato».23Ora essi non sapevano che Giuseppe li capiva, perché tra lui e loro c’era un interprete.24Ed egli si allontanò da loro, e pianse. Poi tornò, parlò con quelli e prese tra di loro Simeone, che fece incatenare sotto i loro occhi.25Poi Giuseppe ordinò che si riempissero di grano i loro sacchi, che si rimettesse il denaro di ciascuno nel suo sacco e che si dessero loro delle provviste per il viaggio. E così fu fatto.26Essi caricarono il loro grano sui loro asini e partirono.27Or uno di essi aprì il suo sacco per dare del foraggio al suo asino, nel luogo dove pernottavano, e vide il suo denaro alla bocca del sacco;28egli disse ai suoi fratelli: «Il mio denaro mi è stato restituito, eccolo qui nel mio sacco». Allora si sentirono mancare il cuore e, tremando, dicevano l’uno all’altro: «Che cos’è mai questo che Dio ci ha fatto?»29E giunsero da Giacobbe, loro padre, nel paese di Canaan e gli raccontarono tutto quello che era loro accaduto, dicendo:30«L’uomo che è il signore del paese ci ha parlato aspramente e ci ha trattati come spie del paese.31Noi gli abbiamo detto: “Siamo gente sincera; non siamo delle spie;32siamo dodici fratelli, figli di nostro padre; uno non è più, e il più giovane è oggi con nostro padre nel paese di Canaan”.33Quell’uomo, signore del paese, ci ha detto: “Da questo saprò se siete gente sincera: lasciate presso di me uno dei vostri fratelli, prendete quello che vi occorre per le vostre famiglie, partite e portatemi il vostro fratello più giovane.34Allora conoscerò che non siete delle spie, ma gente sincera: io vi renderò vostro fratello e voi potrete trafficare nel paese”».35Mentre essi vuotavano i loro sacchi, ecco che in ciascun sacco c’era il sacchetto con il denaro; essi e il padre loro videro i sacchetti con il loro denaro e furono presi da paura.36Giacobbe, loro padre, disse: «Voi mi avete privato dei miei figli! Giuseppe non è più, Simeone non è più, e mi volete togliere anche Beniamino! Tutte queste cose pesano su di me!»37Ruben disse a suo padre: «Se non te lo riconduco, fa’ morire i miei due figli! Affidalo a me, io te lo ricondurrò».38Giacobbe rispose: «Mio figlio non scenderà con voi, perché suo fratello è morto, e questo solo è rimasto; se gli succedesse qualche disgrazia durante il vostro viaggio, fareste scendere con tristezza i miei capelli bianchi nel soggiorno dei morti».

Los, beeilt euch und besorgt etwas, bevor wir verhungern!«3Josefs zehn Halbbrüder machten sich auf den Weg;4nur sein jüngster Bruder Benjamin blieb zu Hause, weil Jakob befürchtete, ihm könnte etwas zustoßen.5Zusammen mit vielen anderen zogen sie nach Ägypten, denn in ganz Kanaan wütete die Hungersnot.6Als Stellvertreter des Pharaos war Josef dafür verantwortlich, die Abgabe des Getreides an die herbeiströmenden Menschen zu überwachen. Als seine Brüder vor ihn traten, verbeugten sie sich tief.7-8Josef erkannte sie sofort, ließ sich aber nichts anmerken. »Woher kommt ihr?«, fuhr er sie an. »Aus Kanaan, um Getreide zu kaufen«, gaben sie ahnungslos zur Antwort.9Josef erinnerte sich an seine Träume von damals. »Ihr seid Spione!«, beschuldigte er sie. »Ihr seid nur gekommen, um zu erkunden, wo unser Land schwach ist!«10»Nein, nein, Herr, wir sind deine ergebenen Diener!«, riefen sie. »Wir möchten nur Getreide kaufen!11Wir sind Brüder und ehrliche Leute. Beim Leben des Pharaos schwöre ich: Ihr kommt hier nicht eher heraus, bis ich euren jüngsten Bruder gesehen habe!16Einer von euch soll ihn holen. Die anderen bleiben in Haft, bis ich weiß, ob man sich auf eure Worte verlassen kann. Wenn nicht, dann seid ihr Spione – beim Leben des Pharaos!«17Er sperrte sie alle für drei Tage ein.18Am dritten Tag sagte er zu ihnen: »Ich bin ein Mann, der Ehrfurcht vor Gott hat. Darum lasse ich euch unter einer Bedingung am Leben:19Um eure Ehrlichkeit zu beweisen, bleibt einer von euch hier in Haft. Ihr anderen geht mit einer Ladung an Getreide zurück, damit eure Familien nicht mehr hungern müssen.20Aber bringt mir euren jüngsten Bruder herbei! Dann weiß ich, dass ihr die Wahrheit gesagt habt, und lasse euch am Leben.« Die Brüder willigten ein.21Sie sagten zueinander: »Jetzt müssen wir das ausbaden, was wir Josef angetan haben! Wir sahen seine Angst, als er uns um Gnade anflehte, aber wir haben nicht gehört.«22»Habe ich euch damals nicht gesagt, ihr solltet den Jungen in Ruhe lassen?«, warf Ruben den anderen vor. »Aber ihr habt nicht gehört. Jetzt müssen wir für seinen Tod büßen!«23Sie ahnten nicht, dass Josef sie verstand, denn vorher hatte er durch einen Dolmetscher mit ihnen geredet.24Josef verließ den Raum, damit sie nicht merkten, dass er weinen musste. Als er sich wieder gefasst hatte, kam er zurück und ließ Simeon vor den Augen der Brüder festnehmen.25Dann befahl er seinen Dienern, die Säcke der anderen mit Getreide zu füllen und ihnen Verpflegung mitzugeben. Heimlich gab er die Anweisung, jedem auch sein gezahltes Geld oben in den Sack zu stecken.26Die Brüder beluden ihre Esel mit den Getreidesäcken und machten sich auf den Weg.27Über Nacht blieben sie in einer Herberge. Als einer von ihnen seinen Sack öffnete, um seinen Esel zu füttern, bemerkte er das Geld.28»Seht, was ich in meinem Sack gefunden habe!«, rief er. »Jemand hat mein Geld dorthin zurückgelegt!« Da bekamen sie es mit der Angst zu tun. »Was hat Gott uns angetan?«, riefen sie.29Zu Hause in Kanaan erzählten sie alles ihrem Vater Jakob:30»Der ägyptische Herrscher war sehr unfreundlich und nannte uns Spione, die das Land auskundschaften wollen.31Wir versicherten ihm, dass wir ehrliche Menschen und keine Spione sind.32›Wir waren zwölf Brüder‹, erzählten wir ihm, ›aber einer ist tot und der jüngste zu Hause bei unserem Vater.‹33Da antwortete er: ›Ich werde überprüfen, ob ihr die Wahrheit sagt. Lasst einen von euch bei mir zurück und nehmt das Getreide mit zu euren Familien nach Hause.34Aber ihr müsst euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir bringen! Sie erstarrten vor Schreck.36»Ihr raubt mir meine Kinder!«, rief Jakob verzweifelt. »Josef lebt nicht mehr, Simeon ist zurückgeblieben, und Benjamin wollt ihr mir auch noch nehmen! Nichts bleibt mir erspart!«37Da griff Ruben ein: »Wenn ich dir Benjamin nicht zurückbringe, kannst du meine beiden Söhne töten«, sagte er. »Ich übernehme die Verantwortung!«38»Nein«, rief Jakob, »es kommt überhaupt nicht in Frage, dass Benjamin mit euch geht! Sein Bruder Josef ist schon tot, und er ist der letzte von Rahels Söhnen. Ich bin ein alter Mann, und wenn ihm unterwegs auch noch etwas zustößt, würde mich das ins Grab bringen! Daran wärt allein ihr schuld!«

He was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. (Gen 37,7; Gen 37,9; Gen 41,41)7Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.” (Gen 42,30)8And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.9And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them. And he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land.” (Gen 37,5; Gen 37,9; Gen 42,7; Gen 42,30)10They said to him, “No, my lord, your servants have come to buy food.11We are all sons of one man. We are honest men. Your servants have never been spies.”12He said to them, “No, it is the nakedness of the land that you have come to see.”13And they said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.” (Gen 37,30; Gen 42,32)14But Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you. You are spies.15By this you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here.16Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. Or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.”17And he put them all together in custody for three days.18On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God: (Le 25,43; Ne 5,15)19if you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain confined where you are in custody, and let the rest go and carry grain for the famine of your households, (Gen 42,33)20and bring your youngest brother to me. So your words will be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so. (Gen 42,34; Gen 43,5; Gen 44,23)21Then they said to one another, “In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.” (Gen 37,23; Giob 36,8)22And Reuben answered them, “Did I not tell you not to sin against the boy? But you did not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood.” (Gen 9,5; Gen 37,21; 1Re 2,32; 2Cr 24,22; Sal 9,12; Lu 11,50)23They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them.24Then he turned away from them and wept. And he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. (Gen 43,30)25And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to replace every man’s money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them. (Gen 44,1)26Then they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed.27And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack. (Gen 42,35; Gen 43,21; Eso 4,24; Ger 9,2)28He said to his brothers, “My money has been put back; here it is in the mouth of my sack!” At this their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?”29When they came to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,30“The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us to be spies of the land. (Gen 42,7; Gen 42,9)31But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we have never been spies.32We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’ (Gen 42,13)33Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your households, and go your way. (Gen 42,15; Gen 42,19)34Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that you are not spies but honest men, and I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.’” (Gen 34,10; Gen 34,21)35As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. (Gen 42,27; Gen 43,21)36And Jacob their father said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has come against me.” (Gen 43,14)37Then Reuben said to his father, “Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.” (Gen 46,9)38But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. Llegaron entonces los hermanos de José, y se postraron ante él rostro en tierra.7José vio a sus hermanos y los reconoció, pero fingió ser un extraño para ellos. Y hablándoles duramente, les dijo: ¿De dónde habéis venido? Ellos respondieron: De la tierra de Canaán, a comprar alimento.8Y José reconoció a sus hermanos, pero ellos no lo reconocieron.9Y acordándose José de los sueños que había soñado acerca de ellos, les dijo: ¡Espías sois! ¡Para ver lo desprotegido del país habéis venido!10Pero ellos le dijeron: No, señor mío, sino que tus siervos vinieron a comprar alimento.11Todos nosotros somos hijos de un mismo varón. Somos honrados, tus siervos no son espías.12Pero él les dijo: ¡No! Mientras, quedad detenidos y sean comprobadas vuestras palabras, si hay verdad en vosotros, y si no, ¡por la vida de Faraón, que sois espías!17Y los puso juntos bajo custodia por tres días.18Pero al tercer día les dijo José: Haced esto y viviréis. Yo temo a ’Elohim.19Si sois honrados, uno de vuestros hermanos quedará encarcelado mientras los demás vais y lleváis el grano a vuestras familias hambrientas.20Pero me traeréis a vuestro hermano menor, y vuestras palabras serán verificadas, y no moriréis. E hicieron así.21Y cada cual decía a su hermano: De cierto somos culpables por nuestro hermano, pues vimos la angustia de su alma cuando nos rogaba, y no lo escuchamos, por eso ha venido sobre nosotros esta angustia.22Entonces Rubén les respondió diciendo: ¿Acaso no os hablé diciendo: No pequéis contra el muchacho? Pero no escuchasteis, y ahora, ciertamente, su sangre nos es demandada.23(Y ellos no sabían que José entendía, porque había un traductor entre ellos.)24Entonces él se apartó, y lloró. Después volvió a ellos y les habló, y tomando de entre ellos a Simeón, lo ató ante sus ojos.25José ordenó entonces que llenaran sus sacos de grano y devolvieran la plata de cada uno de ellos a su saco, y les dieran provisiones para el camino. Y así se hizo con ellos.26Y ellos cargaron su grano sobre sus asnos y se fueron de allí.27Pero en el mesón, al abrir uno su saco para dar forraje a su asno, he aquí vio que su plata estaba en la boca de su costal.28Y dijo a sus hermanos: ¡Mi plata ha sido devuelta, y mirad, incluso está en mi costal! Entonces el corazón les falló y temblaron, y cada uno decía a su hermano: ¿Qué está haciendo ’Elohim con nosotros?29Llegados a su padre Jacob en tierra de Canaán, le refirieron todas las cosas que les habían sucedido, diciendo:30Aquel hombre, el señor de aquella tierra, nos habló cosas duras, y nos trató como a espías de aquel país.31Pero le dijimos: Nosotros somos honrados, no somos espías.32Éramos doce hermanos, hijos de nuestro padre, uno ha desaparecido, y el pequeño está hoy con nuestro padre en tierra de Canaán.33Y aquel hombre, el señor de aquella tierra, nos dijo: En esto sabré que vosotros sois honrados. Dejad a uno de vuestros hermanos conmigo, y tomad para vuestras familias hambrientas, y marchaos.34Luego traedme a vuestro hermano menor, y así sabré que no sois espías, que sois honrados. Os devolveré a vuestro hermano, y podréis negociar en el país.35Y sucedió que al vaciar ellos sus sacos, he aquí la bolsa de plata de cada uno estaba en su saco. Y al ver ellos y su padre las bolsas de plata, tuvieron temor.36Y su padre Jacob les dijo: Me habéis privado de hijos: José no está, Simeón tampoco está, y queréis tomar a Benjamín. ¡Todo está contra mí!37Pero Rubén habló a su padre, diciendo: Haz que mueran mis dos hijos si no te lo traigo. Entrégalo en mi mano, que yo te lo devolveré.38Pero él respondió: Mi hijo no bajará con vosotros, pues su hermano está muerto y ha quedado él solo. Si alguna desgracia le llegara a acontecer en el camino por donde vais, haréis descender mis canas con dolor al Seol.
