Giosafat, re di Giuda; sua pietà e sua prosperità

1 Giosafat, figlio di Asa, regnò al suo posto e si fortificò contro Israele. 2 Collocò dei presidi in tutte le città fortificate di Giuda e pose delle guarnigioni nel paese di Giuda e nelle città di Efraim, che Asa suo padre aveva conquistate. 3 Il Signore fu con Giosafat, perché egli camminò nelle vie che Davide suo padre aveva seguite da principio e non cercò i Baal, 4 ma il Dio di suo padre; si comportò secondo i suoi comandamenti, senza imitare quel che faceva Israele. 5 Perciò il Signore assicurò il potere del regno nelle mani di Giosafat; tutto Giuda gli portava doni, ed egli ebbe ricchezza e gloria in abbondanza. 6 Il suo coraggio crebbe seguendo le vie del Signore e fece anche sparire da Giuda gli alti luoghi e gli idoli di Astarte. 7 Il terzo anno del suo regno mandò i suoi capi Ben-Ail, Obadia, Zaccaria, Natanaele e Micaia a insegnare nelle città di Giuda. 8 Con essi mandò i Leviti Semaia, Netania, Zebadia, Asael, Semiramot, Gionatan, Adonia, Tobia e Tob-Adonia, e i sacerdoti Elisama e Ieoram. 9 Ed essi insegnarono in Giuda. Avevano con sé il libro della legge del Signore; percorsero tutte le città di Giuda e istruirono il popolo. 10 Il terrore del Signore s’impadronì di tutti i regni dei paesi che circondavano Giuda, al punto che non mossero guerra a Giosafat. 11 Una parte dei Filistei portò a Giosafat dei doni e un tributo in argento; anche gli Arabi gli portarono del bestiame: settemilasettecento montoni e settemilasettecento capri. 12 Giosafat raggiunse un alto grado di grandezza e costruì in Giuda castelli e città di rifornimento. 13 Fece eseguire molti lavori nelle città di Giuda ed ebbe a Gerusalemme dei guerrieri, uomini forti e valorosi. 14 Eccone il censimento, secondo le loro case patriarcali. Di Giuda, capi di migliaia: Adna, il capo, con trecentomila uomini forti e valorosi; 15 dopo di lui, Iocanan, il capo, con duecentottantamila uomini; 16 dopo questo, Amasia, figlio di Zicri, il quale si era volontariamente consacrato al Signore, con duecentomila uomini forti e valorosi. 17 Di Beniamino: Eliada, uomo forte e valoroso, con duecentomila uomini, armati d’arco e di scudo; 18 e, dopo di lui, Iozabad, con centottantamila uomini pronti per la guerra. 19 Tutti questi erano al servizio del re, senza contare quelli che egli aveva collocati nelle città fortificate, in tutto il paese di Giuda.

Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah

1 Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place and strengthened himself against Israel. 2 He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had captured. (2Cr 11,5; 2Cr 15,8) 3 The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals, 4 but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the practices of Israel. (1Re 12,28) 5 Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor. (2Cr 18,1; 2Cr 32,23) 6 His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord. And furthermore, he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah. (1Re 22,43; 2Cr 15,17; 2Cr 20,33) 7 In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah; (2Cr 35,3) 8 and with them the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah; and with these Levites, the priests Elishama and Jehoram. (2Cr 19,8) 9 And they taught in Judah, having the Book of the Law of the Lord with them. They went about through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people. (2Cr 17,7) 10 And the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, and they made no war against Jehoshaphat. (2Cr 14,14; 2Cr 20,29) 11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and silver for tribute, and the Arabians also brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats. (2Sam 8,2; 2Cr 26,8) 12 And Jehoshaphat grew steadily greater. He built in Judah fortresses and store cities, 13 and he had large supplies in the cities of Judah. He had soldiers, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem. 14 This was the muster of them by fathers’ houses: Of Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, with 300,000 mighty men of valor; 15 and next to him Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000; 16 and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, a volunteer for the service of the Lord, with 200,000 mighty men of valor. (Giudic 5,2; Giudic 5,9; Ne 11,2) 17 Of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor, with 200,000 men armed with bow and shield; (1Cr 12,2) 18 and next to him Jehozabad with 180,000 armed for war. 19 These were in the service of the king, besides those whom the king had placed in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.
