18Народження Ісуса Христа відбулося так: Марія, Його мати, була заручена з Йосифом. Перед їхнім одруженням виявилося, що вона вагітна від Святого Духа.19Але Йосиф, її чоловік, був праведним і, не бажаючи зганьбити Марію, вирішив таємно відпустити її.20Коли ж він про це думав, з’явився йому уві сні ангел Господній та сказав: «Йосифе, сину Давида, не бійся взяти Марію, дружину свою, бо зачате в ній – від Духа Святого.21Вона народить Сина, і ти назвеш Його Ісус[1], бо Він спасатиме народ Свій від його гріхів».22Усе це сталося, щоби сповнилось сказане Господом через пророка:23«Ось діва завагітніє й народить Сина, і дадуть Йому ім’я Еммануїл»,[2] що перекладається«З нами Бог».24Прокинувшись від сну, Йосиф зробив так, як звелів йому ангел Господній, і взяв Марію за дружину.25Але не знав її, поки вона не народила Сина свого первонародженого, і він дав Йому ім’я Ісус.

Joseph accepts Jesus as his son
18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[4]: his mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[5] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[6] because he will save his people from their sins.’22All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet:23‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’). (Іс 7:14)24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.25But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
